Summary

A number-one New York Times bestseller when it was originally published, THE SILMARILLION is the core of J。R。R。 Tolkien's imaginative writing, a work whose origins stretch back to a time long before THE HOBBIT。
Tolkien considered THE SILMARILLION his most important work, and, though it was published last and posthumously, this great collection of tales and legends clearly sets the stage for all his other writing。 The story of the creation of the world and of the the First Age, this is the ancient drama to which the characters in THE LORD OF THE RINGS look back and in whose events some of them, such as Elrond and Galadriel, took part。 The three Silmarils were jewels created by Feanor, most gifted of the Elves。 Within them was imprisoned the Light of the Two Trees of Valinor before the Trees themselves were destroyed by Morgoth, the first Dark Lord。 Thereafter, the unsullied Light of Valinor lived on only in the Silmarils, but they were seized by Morgoth and set in his crown, which was guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth。 THE SILMARILLION is the history of the rebellion of Feanor and his kindred against the gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all their heroism, against the great Enemy。
This second edition features a letter written by J。R。R。 Tolkien describing his intentions for the book, which serves as a brilliant exposition of his conception of the earlier Ages of Middle-earth。

3。5/5 starsI finally read The Silmarillion 😭Overall, I loved this dive into Middle-Earth lore。 Some of the stories were fantastic -- my favourite was definitely Beren and Luthien。 Some of the stories I struggled to follow, but I pushed through and I liked how they all built off one another。 Definitely worth the read。

I was telling a friend that I'd never read Lord of the Rings (couldn't get into it) and that it took me two tries to read The Hobbit; he was aghast and has now laid out my reading for the series。 My main issue with fantasy is the names for places and people being impossible to remember because of either similarity to other names in the universe (see Wheel of Time series) or that the names are so far outside of how my language makes names happen that I can't ever make them stick to the walls of m I was telling a friend that I'd never read Lord of the Rings (couldn't get into it) and that it took me two tries to read The Hobbit; he was aghast and has now laid out my reading for the series。 My main issue with fantasy is the names for places and people being impossible to remember because of either similarity to other names in the universe (see Wheel of Time series) or that the names are so far outside of how my language makes names happen that I can't ever make them stick to the walls of my brain。 The Silmarillion doesn't really have A Narrative; each chapter is just a (wordy) telling of how and why things are the way they are。 The issue is that without a character to follow throughout it made it really difficult to a) care or b) remember enough details about to be meaningful。I think that if I'd had the benefit of an association with other characters/narratives I might have enjoyed this more; right now, it was like getting the full rundown of who's dating whom and why he and his last girlfriend broke up and then every other detail on the first day at a new school。 The things I retained most were about the characters I already had been introduced to through other means。 Gandalf and Radagast, Galadriel, Beren and Luthien, the rings, etc。It's overwhelming, has really heavy text (not surprising or a criticism), and I don't think I really got the benefit I could have。I told my friend that I'll keep trying to read his Hobbit shit, and he's saying I should read Beren and Luthien next; I actually enjoyed the parts about them in the Silmarillion so hopefully it's good。 。。。more

Silmarilion je knjiga u kojoj je Tolkin najviše izrazio svoju maštovitost i kreativnost。 Bajkovito, s mnoštvo razraženih likova i priča。

。。。more

I waited until age 62 to take on this book, and I’m glad I did, because I never would have had the patience to finish it otherwise。 It’s not for the faint of heart。 This isn’t an ordinary fictive narrative, it’s much more akin to a stylized history textbook, like, say, the Old Testament。Having said that, the scope is magnificent and the background essential for understanding the greater realm of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings。 Plus, the stories and characters are thoroughly interesting in I waited until age 62 to take on this book, and I’m glad I did, because I never would have had the patience to finish it otherwise。 It’s not for the faint of heart。 This isn’t an ordinary fictive narrative, it’s much more akin to a stylized history textbook, like, say, the Old Testament。Having said that, the scope is magnificent and the background essential for understanding the greater realm of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings。 Plus, the stories and characters are thoroughly interesting in and of themselves, independent of those famous tales of the late Third Age。We certainly see the influence of Tolkien’s experiences in World War I。 Battles and struggles are uncompromising contests of annihilation and there’s no shortage of sad endings to many tales and characters, be they heroic or common。 Many characters meet fates they don’t deserve, but that’s simply how a jealous and indifferent world often operates。Take notes and keep a map handy。 “The Atlas of Middle Earth” is a big help。 。。。more

The best worldbuilding in fantasy history。 Complex, vast and beautiful。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A difficult book to rate。 It on one hand tells such a grand tale spanning such a long time。 On the other hand, the early chapters have no characters to really latch on to, so it feels like a very poetic information dump。 The later stories (e。g。 Beren and Luthien, Children of Hurin) read much much better, and they elevate the whole book by a large margin。 So overall I enjoyed it but the pacing issues and lack of characters in many of the chapters are significant。

The world of Tolkien is one of my favorites, but god was this a hard read。 It took me over a month to read this last year, and I remember like 4% of this book。 But I did dive into this one knowing it was a difficult read and all the memes about it is so true

Whew! Quite a slog。。。some good tidbits, some great creation of Middle Earth stories and definitely worth trying。 I skimmed and skipped some。。。。started to read like foreign stereo instructions in parts。 Too many names and place names that I will never be able to keep straight。 I liked it though, Tolkien had a brilliant mind。

You need to really be invested in Tolkien's vision to embark on this unexpected journey (sorry)。 Don't expect traditional narrative; these are the stories from an invented mythology of Middle Earth。 It's a fascinating accomplishment but dense and not always a smooth read。 I made it through some of it。 You need to really be invested in Tolkien's vision to embark on this unexpected journey (sorry)。 Don't expect traditional narrative; these are the stories from an invented mythology of Middle Earth。 It's a fascinating accomplishment but dense and not always a smooth read。 I made it through some of it。 。。。more

I've heard this text described as half the bible and half an academic textbook。 I enjoyed it - but it was a relatively dense read。 It shreds a lot of light on things in the actual Lord of the Rings story, but it isn't necessary reading unless you're getting into the deeper lore (which is great stuff)! I had held off on reading this for a long time because I was worried it would be dry。 While some of the stories, or really myths, are more compelling than others, I really enjoyed getting to revisit Middle Earth and hear about the adventures that lead up to the trilogy。

This is a book, like The Lord of the Rings, that I think I will appreciate more each time I read it。 The only time I'd read it before this was my senior year of high school during the height of my LOTR fervor, and it entirely overwhelmed me。 I remember I had to have a notebook near me while reading on which I drew a lot of family trees。 I had a need to keep all the elves and endless descendants of Beor straight。 That was a losing battle (for me, at least; not for Stephen Colbert, apparently)。 Th This is a book, like The Lord of the Rings, that I think I will appreciate more each time I read it。 The only time I'd read it before this was my senior year of high school during the height of my LOTR fervor, and it entirely overwhelmed me。 I remember I had to have a notebook near me while reading on which I drew a lot of family trees。 I had a need to keep all the elves and endless descendants of Beor straight。 That was a losing battle (for me, at least; not for Stephen Colbert, apparently)。 This time, I just embraced that I wasn't going to be able to remember the difference between Finarfin and Fingolfin, and which one was Galadriel's dad, and which one's son ruled Gondolin and which one Nargothrond, etc。 etc。 It went much easier for me focusing on both the bigger picture and not worrying too much about keeping all of it in my head at the same time。It also helped going into this with the mentality that this is not a novel but an entire world and creation myth and mythology that Tolkien was building。 I love fictional worldbuilding, and fictional history, so with that mindset I had a great time with this book。 It made me want to go back in to the Appendices in The Lord of the Rings for another re-read (they are a nerdy great time)。 I think it also helped that I wasn't reading the tiny mass market paperback this time around, but a big beautiful illustrated hardcover edition with thick glossy pages and fancy font。 I'm really not going to say anything about the contents of this tome because a) There is too much of it, and b) I am inadequate to the task at present。 This did its job of getting me pumped for the new TV show as well。 I can't wait to see some of this crap on screen。 Into the re-read rotation goes The Silmarillion! A sentence I never thought I'd type。 Glad I gave it a second shot。 I might even try to dive into the hardcore Middle Earth histories after this。 We'll see! 。。。more
