Summary

"I will tell you how I grew up and how I was trained, about the great sages with whom I lived and what they taught me, not through lectures and books but through experiences。"- Swami Rama Reading it, you will discover the human side to this yogic master。 He is a young boy, full of mischief。 He is a teenager, full of curiosity and adventurous zeal。 He is a seeker, with certain strengths and weaknesses。 Just like us, he sometimes fails to distinguish the fake gurus from genuine masters, mistaking magic for spiritual achievement。Living with the Himalayan Masters is one of those rare books that contains the seeds of transformation within its pages--sowing those seeds in the heart of the reader, and creating the potential for true spiritual upliftment。 These stories record Swami Rama's personal quest for truth and enlightenment--inspiring, illuminating, entertaining, mystifying, and often droll and humorous。This life-changing book will bring you face-to-face with some great twentieth-century masters, including Mataji of Assam, a ninety-six-year-old sage who never slept; Gudari Baba, who taught Swami Rama the value of direct experience; Yogi Sri Aurobindo, who integrated meditation with action; Uria Baba, who demonstrated that every human being has the potential for healing; and Mahatma Gandhi。Read the humbling story of the man who founded the Himalayan Institute, and the great teachers who molded him into a Himalayan Master。

Inspiring journey of Swami Rama and his interaction with many spiritual masters of Himalayas and even other parts of India。 His experiences with different masters provide wisdom and approach one should have to lead a spiritual life。 There is also a brief knowledge about few types of traditions and paths to attain enlightenment。Also note that this is not a "How To" book。Someone having spiritual incliniation will really enjoy the book and it will also clear misconceptions one have about spirituali Inspiring journey of Swami Rama and his interaction with many spiritual masters of Himalayas and even other parts of India。 His experiences with different masters provide wisdom and approach one should have to lead a spiritual life。 There is also a brief knowledge about few types of traditions and paths to attain enlightenment。Also note that this is not a "How To" book。Someone having spiritual incliniation will really enjoy the book and it will also clear misconceptions one have about spirituality and enlightenment。 。。。more

Too basic。its just ok, compared to autobiography of a yogi and apprenticed to a himalayan master。 However, enjoyed the descriptions of the himalayas, about the tantras, some citations etc。Book alot more on tackling ego and the stories seem too basic as ego lessons for todays generation though;not as impressive。 But, good for someone just starting off as a seeker, I guess。

NT Hettigei

An excellent book that open readers mind to the eastern knowledge base。 The author takes you on a journey of realization。 This takes you to a deeper level of understanding through common dialogues。 A must-read book for seekers of a spiritual journey。

Medhini

Excellent book for anyone treading the spiritual path。 The modest revelation of a true yogi, his journey with his master, the various experiences at the divine himalaya mountains。 Must read if you love the himalayas

A good read that could have been great The book is autobiographical and some how one gets the feeling, it seems to be inspired by the spiritual classic 'Autobiography of a Yogi ' by Paramhansa Yogananda ji。 The author has so many interesting experiences to share , which he has albeit in a to and fro manner ,rather than chronologically 。 This mars the flow of the narration。 Besides, at times, the narration is sketchy。 The book needs professional editing and if done properly , it can be a great re A good read that could have been great The book is autobiographical and some how one gets the feeling, it seems to be inspired by the spiritual classic 'Autobiography of a Yogi ' by Paramhansa Yogananda ji。 The author has so many interesting experiences to share , which he has albeit in a to and fro manner ,rather than chronologically 。 This mars the flow of the narration。 Besides, at times, the narration is sketchy。 The book needs professional editing and if done properly , it can be a great read。 。。。more

This is a wonderful book that talks about his experience in the Himalayas。 Yogi life is different than ordinary life that's why they become more energetic and enlightened。 We all the fact that mind is like a pond of water even the little breeze of air can disturb its surface。 To maintain the calmness and soundness of mind you need yogic practise that will help you to increase your focus and provides a better control on your sense。 A wonderful book to think about those things with a closer view。 This is a wonderful book that talks about his experience in the Himalayas。 Yogi life is different than ordinary life that's why they become more energetic and enlightened。 We all the fact that mind is like a pond of water even the little breeze of air can disturb its surface。 To maintain the calmness and soundness of mind you need yogic practise that will help you to increase your focus and provides a better control on your sense。 A wonderful book to think about those things with a closer view。 。。。more

🎆🎆🎆l have been often asked which book has changed your life。 And l reply candidly, 'No book has changed my life and rather l think no book is life-changing either。 Only some books leave a very deep impact on you。' And in my case this is one of such books。 Living with the Himalayan Masters。🎆🎆🎆 First of all, let me explain as to why it has a very deep impact on me, making me read it several times。。。 We have decided Knowingly or unknowingly that human beings are capable of doing certain things and 🎆🎆🎆l have been often asked which book has changed your life。 And l reply candidly, 'No book has changed my life and rather l think no book is life-changing either。 Only some books leave a very deep impact on you。' And in my case this is one of such books。 Living with the Himalayan Masters。🎆🎆🎆 First of all, let me explain as to why it has a very deep impact on me, making me read it several times。。。 We have decided Knowingly or unknowingly that human beings are capable of doing certain things and performing certain activities are beyond the ability of any living mortals。 Like we cannot imagine being present at two places at the same time。 We cannot decide the place and way we will encounter death and many more。 If you get to know about such people who can perform such activities naturally, obviously your interest rises。 Well, for the very same reason the book left a deep impact on me。🎆🎆🎆While reading such narrations the first thing that may strike your mind is that such stories might be fabricated to draw your attention。 They may be utter lie。 However, while going through these narrations such doubt didn't even arise in my mind, making me more inquisitive, making me feel there are so many dimensions of life which are unknown to me, exploring which are much worth a while than whiling away the time in frivolous activities。Highly recommended if you are not interested in spiritual literature and also haven't reached a conclusion that you know everything。 。。。more

A few inspiring and/or informational nuggets, but mostly a disparate collection of stories。 This may lead to me reading other works by the author, however。 I prefer Autobiography of a Yogi for this style of book, personally。

Great book! Swami Rama has shares his story, experiences, thoughts and summarizes the teachings。 The teachings are very short but intense。 One need to completely read it to catch those。 This is not a regular book with cookie cuter steps。 Each teaching is very deep and requires you to think deep and hard。

A book for seekers only。! I loved it enjoyed it but please only seekers should read

I'm glad to read some background that I didn't know about Swami Rama。 He was my first Guru。 The day before Halloween 1972 I'd hitchhiked across Illinois to find him, based on a friend's advice。 He fed me chapatis he cooked himself, took me aside to a quiet room, and gave me a mantra, initiating me into his following, then put me up for the night。 Charming fellow, but as a penniless hippie living on a rural commune at the time, affording his lectures wasn't easy。 I made friends, worked gratis in I'm glad to read some background that I didn't know about Swami Rama。 He was my first Guru。 The day before Halloween 1972 I'd hitchhiked across Illinois to find him, based on a friend's advice。 He fed me chapatis he cooked himself, took me aside to a quiet room, and gave me a mantra, initiating me into his following, then put me up for the night。 Charming fellow, but as a penniless hippie living on a rural commune at the time, affording his lectures wasn't easy。 I made friends, worked gratis in Shakti Bookstore in Madison, WI for a time, but ultimately moved deeper into the Tibetan Buddhist orbit。 。。。more

I would like to begin by saying that I found this book extremely readable and very entertaining。 If you've read and enjoyed Yogananda's classic "Autobiography of a Yogi", you're probably going to like this one also。 It reads like an exotic adventure story, told in short chapters taking place around the Himalayas (mostly), where the witty protagonist meets various unusual and often "crazy" figures of "saints" and "sages"。 There's plenty of funny encounters and dangerous adventures, where people a I would like to begin by saying that I found this book extremely readable and very entertaining。 If you've read and enjoyed Yogananda's classic "Autobiography of a Yogi", you're probably going to like this one also。 It reads like an exotic adventure story, told in short chapters taking place around the Himalayas (mostly), where the witty protagonist meets various unusual and often "crazy" figures of "saints" and "sages"。 There's plenty of funny encounters and dangerous adventures, where people are saved through "miracles" and learn valuable lessons about life, death and how the Universe works。 There are also bite-size bits of yogic philosophies and Indian history, and overall this is a very interesting book to read, which I would recommend to anyone interested in yoga。Now I'd like to mention the "dark side" of Swami Rama's story and my problem with this book。 I bought "Living with the Himalayan Masters" in India some years ago and have only picked it up recently。 I knew nothing about the author prior and (as explained above), enjoyed the text immensely。 A simple Google search, however, brings up the story of sexual and psychological abuse at the hands of the guru。 You can read more about that here: http://prem-rawat-bio。org/nrms/info/r。。。Now, knowing about this, I cannot simply sit back and enjoy the book。 This is a shame, but, as they say, what is seen cannot be unseen, and such allegations cannot be ignored。 For this reason I find it difficult to rate the book。 Out of context, I might have given it 5 stars。 Aware of the author's misconduct, however, I feel it would be unjust to do so。 I have opted for 3 stars, because it is still a good book and the philosophical lessons are timeless。It is devastating for me to learn about such horrible actions committed by yet another greatly admired guru in the yoga world, after Pattabhi Jois, Bikram and others。。。 Once again, I am acutely aware of how lucky I have, personally, been on my yoga journey, with my teachers in India and elsewhere。 Finally, it is frightening to realize how common such instances of abuse, in particular towards women, are in all spheres of our lives。 。。。more

I don't believe in miraculous healings, but the spiritual content in the book was meaningful。 I also felt it's written to cater to international readers。 Some incidents were insightful, rest of the book was just okay, little overrated is my verdict。 I don't believe in miraculous healings, but the spiritual content in the book was meaningful。 I also felt it's written to cater to international readers。 Some incidents were insightful, rest of the book was just okay, little overrated is my verdict。 。。。more
