Summary

Mercy Thompson, car mechanic and shapeshifter, faces a threat unlike any other in this thrilling entry in the #1 New York Times bestselling series。

I am Mercedes Athena Thompson Hauptman。
My only "superpowers" are that I turn into a thirty-five pound coyote and fix Volkswagens。 But I have friends in odd places and a pack of werewolves at my back。 It looks like I'm going to need them。

Centuries ago, the fae dwelt in Underhill--until she locked her doors against them。 They left behind their great castles and troves of magical artifacts。 They abandoned their prisoners and their pets。 Without the fae to mind them, those creatures who remained behind roamed freely through Underhill wreaking havoc。 Only the deadliest survived。

Now one of those prisoners has escaped。 It can look like anyone, any creature it chooses。 But if it bites you, it controls you。 It lives for chaos and destruction。 It can make you do anything--even kill the person you love the most。 Now it is here, in the Tri-Cities。 In my territory。

It won't, can't, remain。

Not if I have anything to say about it。

Still loving Mercy, but this felt more like an installment than own story, moving along story lines in a very entertaining fashion。 It took me a while to actually read this because I don’t really enjoy plots where Mercy and Adam aren’t, um, happily nudging, both literally and figuratively, but I very much enjoyed the entourage once I did。

Her books always completely enthrall me。 This was no different。And though I guessed quite early who the bad guy was it was compelling and very relatable to go with Mercy on that ride。 All the characters in the book are awesome in their own special way and I love the many shades all of them have。 I hope this series goes on for a very long time!

And him hearing it!I guessed it was Rumpelstiltskin but it took me far too long。I love how the Fae are both terrifying and wondrous and tricky and endearing。Someone needs to get Stefan some counseling or something。 At least Ben came and stayed with them for a bit while he was recovering。 Speaking of Ben, what I was frustrated by back in 2020 was once he got taken over by the smoke creature, I thought that meant he would play a more central role and maybe get a few good emotional scenes or conversations with some people, including Mercy。 Unfortunately, it just meant him getting locked up for most of the remainder of the book。 I just really would love to get some more development for him, see him showcased a bit more。 PLEASE。I missed Zee and Tad but completely understood why they had to be out of the action for this。Looking forward with much eagerness to Soul Taken! 。。。more

This one shifts into high gear fast。Sudden deaths, seeming to be random。An ancient and classic Fae gains new powers。Now able to control almost anyone, with smoke, through a bite。Vampires, werewolves, even an alpha。 No one seems immune。A LOT of names and characters, from throughout the series。Still this a stand alone story。As a desperate race is on。 For the clue to this enemies identity。As well as a way to defeat it, if anyone can。It may be down to only Mercy, in the end。GREAT series。 If you like This one shifts into high gear fast。Sudden deaths, seeming to be random。An ancient and classic Fae gains new powers。Now able to control almost anyone, with smoke, through a bite。Vampires, werewolves, even an alpha。 No one seems immune。A LOT of names and characters, from throughout the series。Still this a stand alone story。As a desperate race is on。 For the clue to this enemies identity。As well as a way to defeat it, if anyone can。It may be down to only Mercy, in the end。GREAT series。 If you like Urban fantasy。 Check this series out, then thank me later。 。。。more

Oh, how I’ve missed you Mercy! This review may contain unintentional spoilers for anyone who has not read books 1-11 of the Mercy Thompson Series。Smoke Bitten (No。12) is the most recent novel released by author Patricia Briggs。 The main character, Mercedes (aka Mercy) Thompson Hauptman, is one of my favourite fantasy heroines (marketed to an adult readership rather than YA)。Mercy is a larger than life, badass part Native who is a coyote shape shifter。 She also has magical powers that she utilises Oh, how I’ve missed you Mercy! This review may contain unintentional spoilers for anyone who has not read books 1-11 of the Mercy Thompson Series。Smoke Bitten (No。12) is the most recent novel released by author Patricia Briggs。 The main character, Mercedes (aka Mercy) Thompson Hauptman, is one of my favourite fantasy heroines (marketed to an adult readership rather than YA)。Mercy is a larger than life, badass part Native who is a coyote shape shifter。 She also has magical powers that she utilises, more or less, by the seat of her pants。 She grew up under the care of werewolves and, at the time of this novel, is married to the Alpha/Pack Leader of the Tri Cities Werewolf pack, where she now lives。Mercy’s world is loaded with a variety of supernatural creatures, magic, and action。 As usual, she is smack dab in the centre of it all。 Smoke Bitten takes place as the pack is recovering from the events that occurred in Storm Cursed。 Adam – Mercy’s husband – seems to be suffering the most。 He has gone so far as to shut down the mating bond between him and Mercy。 She isn’t happy about it。 Before Mercy can fix it she needs to find out why, and Adam isn’t talking。As if this isn’t enough to contend with, it’s only the beginning。 Underhill has erected a door in Adam & Mercy’s backyard (without consent)。 Something is biting and killing people。 A vampire has become so obsessed with Mercy that he is stalking her。 A rouge werewolf pack shows up intent on challenging Adam’s pack by targeting the people they care about。 Unsurprisingly, Mercy rises to every challenge。If you enjoy strong heroines who are fiercely loyal, protective of the people/creatures they care about, and love their families and friends to a fault, you just might fall in love with Mercy too。Storm Cursed released on the 28th of January 2021, and I urge you to treat yourself to the chaos and action that kept me reading late into the night。4。5/5 🌟Thank you to Netgalley, Little Brown Book Group UK (publisher), and Patricia Briggs (author) for granting me an ARC of this exciting novel in exchange for an impartial review。 。。。more

Even more surprisesI can't decide if this is my favorite of the series or my least favorite of the series。 They're all good including this one。Underhill comes to the real world。 A new monster, or is it?, comes to town。Meanwhile, other villains invade。 Mercy uses all of her powers including ones she's never used before。 And another friend / foe comes back and puts Adam in danger。 Not necessarily in that order。 Even more surprisesI can't decide if this is my favorite of the series or my least favorite of the series。 They're all good including this one。Underhill comes to the real world。 A new monster, or is it?, comes to town。Meanwhile, other villains invade。 Mercy uses all of her powers including ones she's never used before。 And another friend / foe comes back and puts Adam in danger。 Not necessarily in that order。 。。。more

As long as you do not read the Alpha and Omega series* (Detailed below), the Mercy Thompson series remains an enjoyable if predictable jaunt in Urban Fiction Romance。 This focuses more on Adam and Mercy's relationship--- Briggs excels in writing their relationship in a mature manner--- the return to the core couple and hopefully the return to the core relationships is a good move for the series overall--- There is a richness to Wulfe, Marsilla, Stefan, Zee and Tad and they interaction with the v As long as you do not read the Alpha and Omega series* (Detailed below), the Mercy Thompson series remains an enjoyable if predictable jaunt in Urban Fiction Romance。 This focuses more on Adam and Mercy's relationship--- Briggs excels in writing their relationship in a mature manner--- the return to the core couple and hopefully the return to the core relationships is a good move for the series overall--- There is a richness to Wulfe, Marsilla, Stefan, Zee and Tad and they interaction with the various supernatural power struggles internally and externally。 The drama with the Pack was tedious and made little sense YEARS into their marriage。。。 especially since large portions of the pack have no reason to dislike Mercy。Now for the details to my first sentence:(view spoiler)[ the series falls apart completely if you read the Alpha and Omega series which recently revealed that Bran is somewhat attracted to/slight lin love with Mercy--- a child he raised from infancy。 Its also revealed that 1。 everyone knows 2。 they all think its reasonable that Mercy was abused by Bran's wife because。。。 somehow as a child shes responsible for an adult being attracted to her。 It makes the entire series feel ugly--- was she being groomed by this pack? Why is her husband hiding this from her and letting her believe these people care about her as a family? Mercy is a notoriously unreliable narrator--- but this positions every person who she loves and has fought for hiding something HUGE from her。 And she says she hates lies。 its just sad that all these relationships she believes are strong and growing are really built on lies/lies of omission。 Perhaps Briggs wanted to make her Alpha and Omega characters justified for their BS (Leah who is a child abuser in the other books--- is suddenly the victim of BABY MERCY, for her husband being attracted to her--- ugh still gross--- Bran is now the Ev。il) but the character fall out for the books in the Mercy series is pretty big--- (view spoiler)[ (hide spoiler)] (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

This book was so scary!! The heyday of urban fantasy is long over, unfortunately, and this is one of the few series (along with Seanan McGuire's October Daye and Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files) that remain。 (Urban fantasy seems to have gone the way of the late, much lamented mass market paperback, both of which take up a huge chunk of my collection。) This was always one of the better ones, and this entry in the series showcases why I think it has survived。To begin with, the protagonist, Mercy Thompson, is not some over The heyday of urban fantasy is long over, unfortunately, and this is one of the few series (along with Seanan McGuire's October Daye and Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files) that remain。 (Urban fantasy seems to have gone the way of the late, much lamented mass market paperback, both of which take up a huge chunk of my collection。) This was always one of the better ones, and this entry in the series showcases why I think it has survived。To begin with, the protagonist, Mercy Thompson, is not some overpowered wizard or witch。 She's a coyote shapeshifter, daughter of (heh) Coyote, and she does not have the size or strength to take on bad guys like her mate, werewolf Adam Hauptmann, can。 She must survive by her intelligence, her wits, and most importantly, her friends。 Over the years and through the eleven previous books, her network of friends--especially the members of Adam's pack--have come to her aid time and time again。 Mercy repays these relationships with her fierce loyalty, on full display here when she refuses to give up on her husband Adam, who is falling prey to a combination of a witch's curse and his own guilt/PTSD over what he did in the Vietnam War。 Because of this, Mercy comes across as more of a regular person, or as "regular" as urban fantasy can get。 She has a number of oddball powers including, in this book, seeing and talking to ghosts, but they are never overwhelming。 She has a job--she is a mechanic with her own garage--and this also serves to keep the series grounded, even if her partner in the business happens to be an ancient Fae。 This being the 12th book in the series, the plot mostly springs from the last two, but I was able to follow it well enough。 That said, you would also benefit from reading at least the previous book, Storm Cursed。 This series is lower-key than some (especially Harry Dresden) but its longevity and consistent appeal does much to recommend it。 。。。more

Great story as usual。 This book ties up some plotlines from the last two books, but opens some new ideas。。。 I have a bad feeling the author is trying to use these entities to close the MT series in the next book。

If you've read it, you know。Cons:-Invaders: This is probably my biggest problem with the book。 While the smoke demon wreaks havoc, a new pack of werewolves is attempting to invade Adam and Mercy's territory。 This could have easily been a story in and of itself。 Give the invaders their due to be scary。 They're freaking werewolves! One of them is a boogeyman werewolf that the story really hypes up。 The problem is the invaders are a secondary villain。 Something to keep Mercy busy and keep her from resolving the smoke demon problem too quickly。 I was really excited to watch werewolves throw down in a deadly game of war。。。alas we don't get that。 It basically gets talked out and the boogeyman werewolf gets resolved pretty quickly。 It's pretty disappointing。 Overall, I had a fun time reading Smoke Bitten。 Briggs' books always have been, and will likely continue to be, comfort reads。 A solid place I can go to read about fun characters, where love conquers all and good guys win。 A warm blanket to snuggle under and relax with。 。。。more
