Crime and Punishment is one of the greatest and most readable novels ever written。 From the beginning we are locked into the frenzied consciousness of Raskolnikov who， against his better instincts， is inexorably drawn to commit a brutal double murder。

From that moment on， we share his conflicting feelings of self-loathing and pride， of contempt for and need of others， and of terrible despair and hope of redemption: and， in a remarkable transformation of the detective novel， we follow his agonised efforts to probe and confront both his own motives for， and the consequences of， his crime。

The result is a tragic novel built out of a series of supremely dramatic scenes that illuminate the eternal conflicts at the heart of human existence: most especially our desire for self-expression and self-fulfilment， as against the constraints of morality and human laws; and our agonised awareness of the world's harsh injustices and of our own mortality， as against the mysteries of divine justice and immortality。

I feel like giving Crime and Punishment a mere three stars is something that won't go over well with the literary community， but I can't give it any more。There is very little denying Dostoevsky's talent as a writer， but for me， it's his story telling and dialogue that fails in Crime and Punishment。The book is very slow with intermittent bouts of intensity that keep you going， but overall very little happens in hundreds and hundreds of pages。The extended monologues that nearly every character par I feel like giving Crime and Punishment a mere three stars is something that won't go over well with the literary community， but I can't give it any more。There is very little denying Dostoevsky's talent as a writer， but for me， it's his story telling and dialogue that fails in Crime and Punishment。The book is very slow with intermittent bouts of intensity that keep you going， but overall very little happens in hundreds and hundreds of pages。The extended monologues that nearly every character partakes in tend to drag and drag and really serve little purpose to the overall story。 They somehow feel both superfluous and insufficient。 。。。more

I DNFd this back in high school， due in large part to the names。 I no longer find the diminutives and patronymics as confusing as I used to。 But this is still a RUSSIAN novel， with all that implies， so not for the faint of heart。 （Once again， I am thankful for audiobooks）

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it， click here。 Oh my my。。。 Jučer sam dovršila ovu odiseju u ravno 23:56。 Da sam čitala dok sam imala vremena， bilo bi mi a） jednostavnije i b） vjerodostojnije jer mislim da bi se više uspela uživit u radnju。 Bilo kako bilo， lekcija za neki drugi put。 Dakle， idemo po nekakvom redu da ne zvuči ko da sam meljem， makar， po Razumihinovoj teorijici o trabunjanju nemam se radi čega ustručavati。 Likovi i njihova konstantna teoretiziranja o životu su definitivno na meni ostavili najveći dojam i o njima imam najviše za Oh my my。。。 Jučer sam dovršila ovu odiseju u ravno 23:56。 Da sam čitala dok sam imala vremena， bilo bi mi a） jednostavnije i b） vjerodostojnije jer mislim da bi se više uspela uživit u radnju。 Bilo kako bilo， lekcija za neki drugi put。 Dakle， idemo po nekakvom redu da ne zvuči ko da sam meljem， makar， po Razumihinovoj teorijici o trabunjanju nemam se radi čega ustručavati。 Likovi i njihova konstantna teoretiziranja o životu su definitivno na meni ostavili najveći dojam i o njima imam najviše za reći。 First honorable mention goes to Dmirtij Prokofjič aka my man Razumihin。 Njegov lik je jedan od najsimpatičnijh i najpožrtvovnijih o kojima sam ikad čitala。 Bilo mi je preslatko kak se， onakav pijan， zacopal u Dunju， iako ne vjerujem u slijepu ljubav na prvi pogled， njihova je toliko divno i nježno napisana da sam ju odmah prihvatila。 Vidlo se da je bil spreman za nju sve napraviti， odmah je krenul u akciju da najde ljepsi， dostojniji stan za nju i mamu。 Mislim da su je ona bila savršen izbor za njega。 Jebena mi je ona rečenica koja govori da im je on postal "i sin i brat"。 Da Rodja nije bil onak munjen， i njihovo prijateljstvo bi mi se više dopalo。 Razumihin bi i za svojega bedastoga kompića bubreg prodal i mislim da je do samoga kraja vjeroval u njega。 I dolazimo do Raskoljnikova。 Za njega imam puno toga za reći， ali nisam sposobna sastavit ni jednu smislenu rečenicu， pa budem radije šutila。 Nadam se da me nitko apsolutno nikad nebude pital kaj osobno mislim o njemu jer mislim da bude mi mozak na mjestu eksplodiral。 Malo ga volim， malo ga mrzim。 Malo je osjećajan i spreman braniti obitelj， malo je narcisoidan， bijesan i odvratan。 Nekaj bi si uspel srediti i onda opet sve zasere。 Ipak， voljela ja njega ili ne， vraški je zanimljiv i o njemu i njegovim teorijama i filozofijama bi mogla još puno čitati。 Njih dvoje mi je ostavilo najveći utisak i njih se budem najviše sjećala。 Kaj se ostalih tiče， Sonja je bila simpatična ali imam osjećaj da joj je Crkva isprala mozak， Dunja/Avdotja i Puljherija su mi bile čist drage， vidlo se da su obje pametne i da ih nikako ne smeta i ne obilježava to kaj su siromašne。 Porfirij je bil oke， užasno mi je išel na jetra dok je mljel i igral igrice s Rodjom， to je moglo biti kraće。 Zosimov， Zamjotov， Lužin， Lebezjatnikov， Marmeladov， pa i Katerina su mi， u globalu， bili malo nebitni。 Za kraj， kaj se Svidrigajlova tiče， taj čovjek more slobodno trunut u paklu， uopće se ne osjećam loše kad velim da mi je drago kaj se ubil。 Bil je razvratnik， mogući ubojica， ali najgore mi je bilo njegovo pravdanje pedofilskih nagona i to da su， prema njemu， dječja naivnost i suze ljepše od ljepote same 。。。 čovek， kakve si ti gljive pušil？ Fuj na kvadrat。 Dvije filozofije koje bi rado spomenula su naravno Rodjina teorija o podjeli ljudi na obične i neobične。 Na stranu s time da je on htio sam sebi dokazati da je Napoleon i da je radi toga ubil dvoje ljudi， teorija je fascinantna i postavlja mnoga pitanja。 Mogu li na odgovorit na ta pitanja？ Nikako。 Još uvijek ne znam kak da se postavim prema ovim razmišljanjima， ali definitivno u njima ima neke istine。 I druga， možda ne toliko bitna， ali meni draga， je Razumihinova pretpostavka o trabunjanju， gde on govori kako su ljudi do svih svojih važnih postignuća došli jer je netko nekad nešto bubnuo i nekome drugome se to svidjelo。 On voli kada mu netko trabunja jer onda zna da se zaista razgovara s tom osobom。 "Ja volim kad ljudi trabunjaju！ Trabunjanje je jedina čovjekova povlastica koja je uskraćena ostalim stvorenjima。" "Trabunjati na svoj način， pa to je gotovo bolje nego ponavljati tuđe istine;。。。" A vidi ga， ribica， kak je pametan。 <3 Zanimljiva i dinamična radnja （o kojoj mi se ne da pisat）， likovi koji su prikazani kao pravi， opipljivi ljudi， s pravim， opipljivim manama i vrlinama， teorije od kojih ti pamet stane i （ponekad） beskrajni monolozi， po svemu ovomu budem pamtila ovu knjigu。 Jel Zločin i kazna bila dobra uvertira u moje upoznavanje sa svjetskim klasicima， iskreno nemam pojma， ali mi je drago kaj sam ju pročitala u cijelosti， kaj nemrem reći da brojne druge lektire :） P。S。 Sori na raspisivanju， ali ak Dostojevski more napisat toliku knjigu， onda valjda smijem i ja malo poveći review hehe 。。。more

1。This book could have had so many alternative titles。 The Anguishes of an Unemployed Dropout could have been a good name for this novel。 Or Look at 'em Cry （literally， like everyone in the book）。 Or maybe How do they Move around so fast without the Mention of any Vehicles？ The only vehicle this book firmly alludes to is used as the means of a death， and not even of a murder。 Just an accidental， ghastly death。But the title， yes。 Some translators translated the name Prestuplenie i Nakazanie to Cr 1。This book could have had so many alternative titles。 The Anguishes of an Unemployed Dropout could have been a good name for this novel。 Or Look at 'em Cry （literally， like everyone in the book）。 Or maybe How do they Move around so fast without the Mention of any Vehicles？ The only vehicle this book firmly alludes to is used as the means of a death， and not even of a murder。 Just an accidental， ghastly death。But the title， yes。 Some translators translated the name Prestuplenie i Nakazanie to Crime and Punishment， and that stuck around， even in Bengali， to give rise to the ridiculous name Oporadh o Shasti。 The version I am currently going through reads more like Sin and Atonement， Paap o Prayoshchitto， and this book hardly cares about any criminals （cf。 Catch Me If You Can）， neither does it invest in any sort of punishment， divine or corporal。Names。 Names。 Names。2。How do you talk in parentheses？ I mean here you have a minor character Semiotic-ovich saying "。。。 because as you were giving her the ten-rouble note — I saw it myself — you picked up a hundred-rouble note from the table。 （I saw that because I was standing close 。。。 I didn't forget about you holding that note。） You folded it 。。。。"Now dashes， I understand。 But parentheses？ How do you folks talk in parentheses？ How do I start practicing？3。This book is very bad at making you wait。 God-loving Fyodor throws you a climax and starts shaking to the core， so he has to rescue you from the tension within ten pages。 Doesn't make a gripping read， at all。4。Dostoyevsky， in all his books， does justice to only three kinds of characters: the madmen， the children， and the women with heavy hearts， some of whom are also mad themselves。 Reading Dostoyevsky， you become tempted to become these， to become a madman， to become a child， to become a woman who cannot shy away from her worries and concerns。5。Karamazov was brilliant because all of its characters somehow fell into one of these categories。 Sin and Atonement failed because it also has too many Petroviches and too many Dunyas， too many unapologetic squanderers of sanity that Dostoyevsky learned to dispose of later。6。I am not finished with the book yet。 What with all my classes and everything， I am sipping this slow。 Who knows what surprise is waiting。 I may， very soon， need to revoke what I have said。 All of it。 。。。more

Book covers a lot of good themes but， jesus， is it hard to get through。 20 page Epilogue has just about as many plot points as the entire book。 Boring read but interesting plot， characters and themes。

罪与罚，罪是自己犯下的，最终也给自己下了罚。一个人狂妄、迷茫与挣扎，为了一个幻想犯下了罪，而终于认识到自己犯罪了，这个时候罚也就开始了，书中结尾爱情带来了希望，仿佛扫除了罪与罚，实际上并不是扫除了罚，应当是赋予罚更加高尚的意义。
