Summary

In hardback for the first time, this tenth-anniversary edition of the game-changing #1 New York Times bestseller features a new foreword and brand-new tools to make the work your own。

For over a decade, Brené Brown has found a special place in our hearts as a gifted mapmaker and a fellow traveller。 She is both a social scientist and a kitchen-table friend whom you can always count on to tell the truth, make you laugh and, on occasion, cry with you。 And what's now become a movement all started with The Gifts of Imperfection, which has sold more than two million copies in thirty-five different languages across the globe。

What transforms this book from words on a page to effective daily practices are the ten guideposts to wholehearted living。 The guideposts not only help us understand the practices that will allow us to change our lives and families, they also walk us through the unattainable and sabotaging expectations that get in the way。

Brené writes, "This book is an invitation to join a wholehearted revolution。 A small, quiet, grassroots movement that starts with each of us saying, 'My story matters because I matter。' Revolution might sound a little dramatic, but in this world, choosing authenticity and worthiness is an absolute act of resistance。"

Brene Brown’s work is always amazing。

Definitely will reread again and again

I do like her books, but somehow it feels like the scratch a surface only。 Maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist? Probably。 I do like her books, but somehow it feels like the scratch a surface only。 Maybe I'm too much of a perfectionist? Probably。 。。。more

I find myself pulling this off my bookshelves every few months to reread key parts when I need an honest yet gentle reckoning。

Sometimes I read a book like this and wish I could go back in time and parent my older kids again with some of the knowledge I gain from the insights in this book or my own growth through the years。 (Then I realize I actually have no interest in parenting my kids again。 😂)This is an introspective book。 It’s a book that will speak to everyone differently。

Brene never fails to give us new insight into our lives。 You can tell she is invested in discovering new information that we can then use to better our lives。 This book will break down the gifts of imperfection into simple, beautiful, meaningful and relatable ways。 You will always be able to find yourself through her words and examples。 She does all of this without judgement, and instead through compassionate terms that make you feel at home。 You will find yourself continuously taking note of th Brene never fails to give us new insight into our lives。 You can tell she is invested in discovering new information that we can then use to better our lives。 This book will break down the gifts of imperfection into simple, beautiful, meaningful and relatable ways。 You will always be able to find yourself through her words and examples。 She does all of this without judgement, and instead through compassionate terms that make you feel at home。 You will find yourself continuously taking note of the collectiveness of her research— slowly, you realize you are not alone, you are enough, you are worthy, and you deserve to feel at peace。 I am always thankful for Brene and her work。 I highly recommend this book! 。。。more

I rather enjoyed her stories, definitions of terms, and references to her research, and was slightly less interested in the 'guide' to wholehearted living itself because it is essentially a call to live an authentic life。 I do like that she included creativity because that is often not addressed as a 'need', much like sleep and play, that we all need to incorporate into our lives to feel fulfilled。 I rather enjoyed her stories, definitions of terms, and references to her research, and was slightly less interested in the 'guide' to wholehearted living itself because it is essentially a call to live an authentic life。 I do like that she included creativity because that is often not addressed as a 'need', much like sleep and play, that we all need to incorporate into our lives to feel fulfilled。 。。。more

Brené Brown reminds me to not be too hard on myself, and I have a tendency to do that。 I appreciate Brown's work in this field because she uses her own research and understands that sometimes stuff just sucks。 Some publishing in the self-help genre is a lot of optimism and everything will be okay, but Brown approaches mental health issues realistically and does not minimize anyone's experience。 Sometimes I feel guilty for being such a mess because I am so privileged and have been given so much i Brené Brown reminds me to not be too hard on myself, and I have a tendency to do that。 I appreciate Brown's work in this field because she uses her own research and understands that sometimes stuff just sucks。 Some publishing in the self-help genre is a lot of optimism and everything will be okay, but Brown approaches mental health issues realistically and does not minimize anyone's experience。 Sometimes I feel guilty for being such a mess because I am so privileged and have been given so much in my life yet there are areas of my life that have made it really hard for me to live。 And this is okay。 How my trauma affects me is unique to my experience, and I'm allowed to feel it and suffer from it even if others are suffering more than me。 I would recommend this book to you if you also suffer from being a perfectionist and having anxiety。 Looking forward to reading more of Brené Brown's work。 。。。more

Don't judge this book by it's cover (The 10th year edition is way better)。Brené has a way of making every book she writes life changing, this one is no exception。 More than a "self help" book, this books guides you through rough and stressful times (Like COVID) and gets you to be a little bit (or a lot) more you。 Deeply recommended for anyone who suffers anxiety。And yes, I am her biggest fan。 Don't judge this book by it's cover (The 10th year edition is way better)。Brené has a way of making every book she writes life changing, this one is no exception。 More than a "self help" book, this books guides you through rough and stressful times (Like COVID) and gets you to be a little bit (or a lot) more you。 Deeply recommended for anyone who suffers anxiety。And yes, I am her biggest fan。 。。。more

Originally I rated this three stars but I think this deserves a reread for when I’m not as stressed as I am right now and can fully take in the messages and lessons。

As always, Brene Brown has a way of speaking to everyone and her insights are so very helpful。

I enjoyed the book but it was not what I needed。 There are things that I appreciated about the book。"Perfectionism is not self-improvement。"Leonard Cohen's song "Anthem" - "There is a crack in everything。 That's how the light gets in。""Hope is learned。。。。 It's a copious choice。。。。 Hopeful self talk sounds more like, This is tough, but I can do it。。。Hopelessness is dangerous because it leads to feelings of powerlessness。""When we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions。"Eliz I enjoyed the book but it was not what I needed。 There are things that I appreciated about the book。"Perfectionism is not self-improvement。"Leonard Cohen's song "Anthem" - "There is a crack in everything。 That's how the light gets in。""Hope is learned。。。。 It's a copious choice。。。。 Hopeful self talk sounds more like, This is tough, but I can do it。。。Hopelessness is dangerous because it leads to feelings of powerlessness。""When we numb the painful emotions, we also numb the positive emotions。"Elizabeth Keebler-Ross: People are like stained-glass windows。 They sparkle and shine when the sun is out, but when the darkness sets in, their beauty is revealed only if there is a light from within。"It seems that gratitude without practice may be a little like faith with our works - it's not alive。Happiness is ties to circumstance and joyfulness is tied to spirit and gratitude。Comparison is all about conformity and competition。Laura Williams: Comparison is the thief of happiness。Ask when things are going really well: What does it look like?Dance every day for five minutes。 。。。more

The most inspiring book I have read so far。 Not only Brené succeeds in making the readers identify themselves with the book, but I have found all the tips implementable in my everyday life to live it more whole-hearted。

🎧 I’m just basically turning into a Brené Brown fan girl 😂。 I love how Brené’s work focuses on the same issues (shame and vulnerability) but that each book comes from a different approach with different personal stories。 The Gifts seemed different to me as it gives a more active approach on how to live in a more positive light based on our imperfections。 It was great as well as there is a quiz on her website that allows you to check out which “gifts” you should pay attention to most before liste 🎧 I’m just basically turning into a Brené Brown fan girl 😂。 I love how Brené’s work focuses on the same issues (shame and vulnerability) but that each book comes from a different approach with different personal stories。 The Gifts seemed different to me as it gives a more active approach on how to live in a more positive light based on our imperfections。 It was great as well as there is a quiz on her website that allows you to check out which “gifts” you should pay attention to most before listening。 。。。more

This was more of a memoir than a self-help book, which I assumed it would be from the title。 I got this as a Christmas gift from my friend, as it was on sale at Target。 I wasn't inspired by the tones of self-pity and many parts were unrelatable and seemed too dramatic; the anecdotes reeked of privileged suburban life。 I feel like I'd relate more to this book if I was an affluent middle-aged straight white woman/mother, but I'm honestly none of those things。 I'm a single, 24 year-old, millennial This was more of a memoir than a self-help book, which I assumed it would be from the title。 I got this as a Christmas gift from my friend, as it was on sale at Target。 I wasn't inspired by the tones of self-pity and many parts were unrelatable and seemed too dramatic; the anecdotes reeked of privileged suburban life。 I feel like I'd relate more to this book if I was an affluent middle-aged straight white woman/mother, but I'm honestly none of those things。 I'm a single, 24 year-old, millennial lesbian, whose Asian parents were penny pinchers。 The only good thing I really grasped from this book was a reminder to hold space for myself and my imperfections/expectations of others, but tbh that's pretty cliche advice that I could've gotten without reading all the pages in this book。 。。。more

I read this book as part of my graduate lifespan development class; I'm still not quite sure why the professor had us read this for her class (as far as it pertaining to classwork) but it is a good book nonetheless。 It offers "guideposts" for living a more authentic life and challenges previous thinking that can lead to a less than fulfilling life。 I recommend reading this book in doses rather than plowing through in one go; meditating on its messages has helped me challenge backward thinking th I read this book as part of my graduate lifespan development class; I'm still not quite sure why the professor had us read this for her class (as far as it pertaining to classwork) but it is a good book nonetheless。 It offers "guideposts" for living a more authentic life and challenges previous thinking that can lead to a less than fulfilling life。 I recommend reading this book in doses rather than plowing through in one go; meditating on its messages has helped me challenge backward thinking that I have in my own life。 。。。more

I love Brene Brown’s books in general, i want to make that really clear because I’m about to only talk about my one issue with her collection - but it’s a small issue and her insight and earnest desire to help people shine through so wonderfully! But I think she just needs to be honest with herself and name them “shame is bad book 1, 2, 3, 4, etc” because whatever she may title the books - that’s what they boil down to。 I don’t blame her though! She studied shame, so she is anchored from that re I love Brene Brown’s books in general, i want to make that really clear because I’m about to only talk about my one issue with her collection - but it’s a small issue and her insight and earnest desire to help people shine through so wonderfully!
