Summary

From his days as a young mercenary to his time as captain of the Band of the Hawks' Raiders, Guts's life has been defined by his ability to fight and his will to win。 Now cursed with the Brand of Sacrifice -- a sigil that will forever mark him as prey for the damned -- and with his companions dead, his lover's mind destroyed and his one-time commander and friend reborn as a malevolent demon lord, it seems that more than ever Guts must rely upon his instinct to survive。 But Hell has many faces, and when what appears to be an innocent country village proves to be a den of tragic secrets, the horror of a fairy tale perverted by pain and hate may prove to be more than Guts can handle!

This was another cool one as we have Guts fighting off those elves-monster hybrid and learn they are human children and learn the whole backstory of what happened to them and how they turned out this way, a slight falling off between Puck and Guts and more stuff happening and maybe Jill (the girl they rescued) getting an offer to turn into an elf and we go to misty valley and see the real horror there and forcing and all and Guts fighting the forest guardians and finally coming there like a mons This was another cool one as we have Guts fighting off those elves-monster hybrid and learn they are human children and learn the whole backstory of what happened to them and how they turned out this way, a slight falling off between Puck and Guts and more stuff happening and maybe Jill (the girl they rescued) getting an offer to turn into an elf and we go to misty valley and see the real horror there and forcing and all and Guts fighting the forest guardians and finally coming there like a monster to face off against these elves-monsters to rescue Jill and Puck! Good volume but it got a bit monotonous towards the end but great art again! 。。。more

Slow/weak start。。。 picks ups up in the middle。。。 strong and very good finish。 More in the realm of a 3。5, but with a round down; just not quite enough to round up。 This ended right in the middle of the action just when things started to get really good, which is fairly normal and expected。。 the whole continuous cliff hanger effect of TV Shows and as I am seeing manga/anime as well。 Try to keep the reader/viewer hooked to be on the edge of their seat waiting for the next volume/episode。 Hoping #1 Slow/weak start。。。 picks ups up in the middle。。。 strong and very good finish。 More in the realm of a 3。5, but with a round down; just not quite enough to round up。 This ended right in the middle of the action just when things started to get really good, which is fairly normal and expected。。 the whole continuous cliff hanger effect of TV Shows and as I am seeing manga/anime as well。 Try to keep the reader/viewer hooked to be on the edge of their seat waiting for the next volume/episode。 Hoping #16 continues to keep up the pace and stay great! 。。。more

The Golden Age arc was incredible; unfortunately the Lost Children chapters in Conviction arc are a bit weak, but after this volume the series starts to pick up again。

Uzun bir Sisli Vadi macerası。 Önceki ciltten devrolmuştu, bu cilt de bitti ama macera bitmedi。 Kaybolan çocuklar, insanlara dadanan kendilerine elf diyen canavarlar ve tabi kara kılıç ustasının devasa kılıcı ile karşısına çıkan tüm yaratıkları kesip biçtiği uzun bir macera。 Guts'ın peşine düşen Vatikan şövalyeleri oldukça ilgi çekici。。。 Bakalım onlar maceraya nasıl dahil olacak ne neler yaşanacak? SUPER FAST REVIEW:Unfortunately, this is the weakest volume so far IMO but it’s still pretty good。So I am still quite interested in this story, the art as always gets better and better, there are some fantastic action scenes too。 Very intense。 I also like the horror: very interesting and creepy monster designs as well as tons of gore as always。Unfortunately there was some spoilery stuff I considered slightly creepy in a not horror way。 I also didn’t care for some of the directions this plot went SUPER FAST REVIEW:Unfortunately, this is the weakest volume so far IMO but it’s still pretty good。So I am still quite interested in this story, the art as always gets better and better, there are some fantastic action scenes too。 Very intense。 I also like the horror: very interesting and creepy monster designs as well as tons of gore as always。Unfortunately there was some spoilery stuff I considered slightly creepy in a not horror way。 I also didn’t care for some of the directions this plot went (though to be fair there were also some fantastic directions taken so maybe it works out)。 Oh and I am beginning to get annoyed with Puck (a little comic relief is fine, but in this volume he is focused on so heavily and for what’s meant to be a very dark and intense volume of a series that is known as one of the most fucked up comics ever, it’s weird to focus so much on a comic relief character when we’re 15 volumes deep into the series)。Overall, I still enjoyed this book, it’s interesting。 Also the fact that this is the weakest volume of the series so far but it’s still good and volume 15 shows that this series is quality! So yeah, while this volume was in the good-not-great category IMO, I still liked it and highly recommend the series as a whole。4/5 。。。more

This is my review of Berserk's Conviction arc, contained in volumes 15 through 21 of the manga。I didn't like this arc as much, but that doesn't mean its without merit。 Conviction comes after the manga。I didn't like this arc as much, but that doesn't mean its without merit。 Conviction comes after the Eclipse and chronologically after the introductory Black Swordsman arc。 The arc starts with Guts trying to survive the demons that prevent him from sleeping, and the trail of misfortune that follows him as he wanders aimlessly from place to place。 This seemed like a logical place to continue the story, and the premise alone expresses the weight of everything that's happened paired with the hollowness that Guts feels。 The arc to me is essentially cut into three parts: the false elves, revisiting Godo, and finding Casca。 The beginning was interesting but didn't lead much into the other parts, Guts finding Godo and achieving his focus was the best part of the arc, and Guts' quest to find Casca is complicated by a maniacal holy crusade。 The first part revolves around Puck and Guts wandering into a village that restricts a young lady named Jill from going out to pursue her own life。 I was compelled to read the false-elves story purely because it uses a young, vulnerable character as its focal point。 Jill's story matches Guts' search for purpose and it was easy to empathize with and get involved with her as a focal character of the story。 However the dark logic of Berserk's universe rears its head again through Rosine, who does find it in her heart to escape the village。 She's a childhood friend of Jill who became an elf-like apostle through her sacrifice。 Through the really intriguing story of Peekaf we learn how those who look for purpose in the false elves are tragically forgotten, and this becomes an emotional point of contention for Jill。 Unfortunately while this story plays out, Guts doesn't grow very much but Rosine becomes his most tragic prey yet。 Much like the Count in the Black Swordsman arc, I found Guts' and Rosine's battle weighted by their tragic pasts, so I still felt impacted by their gory battle even if Guts just roars his way through combat。 The result felt tediously similar to most battles so far, but I'll be damned if it wasn't drawn with Miura's immaculate sense of detail and care。 After reuniting with Godo, Guts is reinvigorated to find Casca, only to become involved with the Holy Iron Chain Knights that have pursued him。 They're led by Lady Farnese and their actions are dictated by the terrifying Father Mozgus。 The most compelling part of their story was the demons pursuing and battling Guts test Lady Farnese's faith。 However this part of the story lacked something that a lot of the other arcs possess, which is the humanity that drives both the protagonists and antagonists of the story。 Mozgus doesn't really have much of an arc other than to express the terror and torture the church in Berserk is capable of。 Lady Farnese's faith is further tested by her comrades in arms and the very nature of torturing heretics, but there's not a lot of payoff other than her desertion and further pursuit of Guts。 Miura delivers the action to the reader very heavily throughout the Holy Iron Chain Knights story, which ends in Griffith/Femto re-entering the world。 However I feel that this part of the story only partially delivered the emotional and philosophical punch that the other arcs have。 Guts' motivation to save Casca keeps the story going, Puck joins Isidro as a fellow comic relief character (who I hope receives character development) and a codependent prostitute named Nina unlearns her cowardly ways when the tower is flooded with demons。 However I felt that a lot of the antagonists like Mozgus and the Great Goat were neutered of compelling features and just ended up as numbers in Guts' body count。 The world building was a lot slimmer in this one too, as I wanted reasons for why the mob at the end fearfully clung to their faith。 They didn't have much of a reason to want Casca dead other than their faith, which felt like a missed opportunity to tell a more interesting story in the wake of Miura's new demon-haunted world。 The arc leaves many questions to be solved by the next one, and I'm excited to see where the story goes from here。 I'm particularly excited to see how the demon dog looks to satiate itself through Gut's rage。 The impression I got from the Conviction arc was definitely not as positive as the Golden Age for sure, but the philosophizing, creepy egg man, the religious fanaticism, childhoods lost, and Guts' continuous journey still made it a fun read。 。。。more
