Summary

Twenty years ago， all the evil villains were banished from the kingdom of Auradon to the Isle of the Lost-a dark and dreary place protected by a force field that makes it impossible for them to leave。 Stripped of their magical powers， the villains now live in total isolation， forgotten by the world。

Mal learns from her mother， Maleficent， that the key to true darkness， the Dragon's Eye， is located inside her scepter in the forbidden fortress on the far side of the island。 The eye is cursed， and whoever retrieves it will be knocked into a deep sleep for a thousand years。 But Mal has a plan to capture it。 She'll just need a little help from her "friends。" In their quest for the Dragon's Eye， these four kids begin to realize that just because you come from an evil family tree， being good ain't so bad。

This is one of my favorite books to read。 I mean I like how we get to know the core 4 vks before they go to Aurodon， and how Mal originally fell in love with King Ben before they even met。

So this is by the author of Blue Bloods， which was terrible。 I’ve actually passed over this book a couple of times because of that。 My expectations for it were not high。 I have no idea how this woman is the author of both Blue Bloods and this。 The narration style is adorable。 It’s over the top with Disney-style wickedness and exaggerated worldbuilding。 It’s cute！ And then， at the same time as it’s being cute， it actually has a lot of emotional depth。 It covers all four of our protagonists with a So this is by the author of Blue Bloods， which was terrible。 I’ve actually passed over this book a couple of times because of that。 My expectations for it were not high。 I have no idea how this woman is the author of both Blue Bloods and this。 The narration style is adorable。 It’s over the top with Disney-style wickedness and exaggerated worldbuilding。 It’s cute！ And then， at the same time as it’s being cute， it actually has a lot of emotional depth。 It covers all four of our protagonists with about equal weight， unlike the Descendants movie， which I believe was created at the same time as this book was being written。 （I didn’t expect it to dovetail so nicely into the movie continuity， but it actually fits rather well， in the end。）The Descendants movie is not good， exactly。 It’s cute， it’s fun， it’s campy， and the musical numbers are great， but it has drawn comparison to High School Musical and the people who say that have a point。 This story is definitely better suited to being told in text form than movie form （musical numbers excepted）。 The book is forced to do more worldbuilding， which is a definite negative （don’t bother！ The united fairytale kingdom doesn’t make any sense anyway！）。 But it does allow for a lot more exploration of character motivations and relationships， which really helps flesh them out and makes them much more sympathetic。 In the movie， Carlos and Jay are mostly there to be comic relief and backup dancers for the Mal & Evie Show， but in the book， they all have their own things going on。 I was actually contemplating writing a fanfiction for the movie to address exactly this sort of thing， but since the book exists （and is even good！）， I no longer feel like I need to。 The portrayals of the villainous parents is good， too。 It’s exaggerated， yes， but the entire island is a pale shadow of their former glory， and the way they’re written reflects that。 The worldbuilding is a gloriously anachronistic mess of every Disney movie ever made， which means that just about anything can be cheerfully handwaved away。 Imperial China exists， and so does Agrabah？ Yep， and they’re all part of the United Kingdom of Auradon， while all the royalty get to keep their titles。 Prince ascends the throne at age sixteen？ Sure， makes as much sense as any other politics happening here。 Maleficent dies in Sleeping Beauty？ No problem， she’s back now！ Evil Queen fell off a cliff？ Only mostly dead。 Dr。 Facilier got dragged to hell by the forces of evil？ Lmao not anymore， he’s been summoned to live on the island。 And all of them are bitter and petty about it， because that’s all there is left that they can be。 This is basically the origin story for the little gang of singing jerks we meet at the beginning of the Descendants movie。 It’s adorable。 And it’s genuinely touching。 They’re buddies！ There are things you can’t go through without becoming friends， even if you’ve never had a friend before in your life， and a life-changing magical quest through a horrific fortress that specifically preys on your weaknesses is one of them。 Ben’s social justice radicalization slowly happening in “meanwhile， back at the ranch” style is also pretty good。 Kid’s confused， but he’s got the spirit。4/5 stars。 Probably the best entry in the whole franchise， I don’t know yet。 Delightful。 。。。more

Leído desde Ebiblio para un reto literario de fase。 Es la historia Mal， Jay， Caros y Evie， hijos de los malvados de los cuentos。 También se deja ver Ben que es el hijo de Bella y Bestia。 La verdad es que he visto muchas veces la portada y oído hablar del libro， pero me ha decepcionada un poco， esperaba algo más。 Los primeros capítulos han sido muy lento y pesado。 A mitad de libro se ha puesto un poco mas interesante， pero no me ha llegado a convencer。

Carino e non molto di più。La cosa secondo me più ben fatta è la caratterizzazione dei luoghi e dei personaggi， in particolare dei figli dei cattivi， i veri protagonisti di questa storia。 Ho trovato veramente molto coinvolgente la descrizione di quest'isola e della vita che ci si trascorre， meno interessante invece la trama vera e propria， che è una quest senza troppe pretese， abbastanza lineare nel suo svolgimento e un po' stereotipata nelle prove che i ragazzi devono svolgere。Il legame di amici Carino e non molto di più。La cosa secondo me più ben fatta è la caratterizzazione dei luoghi e dei personaggi， in particolare dei figli dei cattivi， i veri protagonisti di questa storia。 Ho trovato veramente molto coinvolgente la descrizione di quest'isola e della vita che ci si trascorre， meno interessante invece la trama vera e propria， che è una quest senza troppe pretese， abbastanza lineare nel suo svolgimento e un po' stereotipata nelle prove che i ragazzi devono svolgere。Il legame di amicizia tra i quattro protagonisti， che sono già amici nel film Disney， viene costruito pian piano e a mio parere è verosimile e vengono tutti e quattro caratterizzati abbastanza bene。La cosa che mi è piaciuta di più è stata il tema del "deludere i genitori"， che secondo me è molto vissuto dai figli di ogni epoca， età e mondo， tanto che accomuna i figli di Crudelia， Jafar， Malefica e della Regina Cattiva tanto quanto il figlio di Belle。 Ho amato tantissimo il personaggio di Belle in questo libro， che anche se del tutto marginale è davvero molto positivo！ 。。。more
