Summary

Angela Carter was a storytelling sorceress, the literary godmother of Neil Gaiman, David Mitchell, Audrey Niffenegger, J。 K。 Rowling, Kelly Link, and other contemporary masters of supernatural fiction。 In her masterpiece, The Bloody Chamber—which includes the story that is the basis of Neil Jordan’s 1984 movie The Company of Wolves—she spins subversively dark and sensual versions of familiar fairy tales and legends like “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Bluebeard,” “Puss in Boots,” and “Beauty and the Beast,” giving them exhilarating new life in a style steeped in the romantic trappings of the gothic tradition。

The highlight of this one for me was Richard's narration of Puss in Boots。 It was incredible voice acting the likes of which is incredibly rare to find。 It was like he was a cat telling a story; just amazing。As for the stories themselves, I just found them kinda underdeveloped and bland。 All of them ended in weird ways, and always left a feeling that there was something missing in the end。 Which was a shame, because, for the most part, the writing itself is beautiful。 The highlight of this one for me was Richard's narration of Puss in Boots。 It was incredible voice acting the likes of which is incredibly rare to find。 It was like he was a cat telling a story; just amazing。As for the stories themselves, I just found them kinda underdeveloped and bland。 All of them ended in weird ways, and always left a feeling that there was something missing in the end。 Which was a shame, because, for the most part, the writing itself is beautiful。 。。。more

As much as I detested this story collection upon first read, I now have an undeniable fondness for gothic literature and fairytale retellings that thrive on crushing childhood nostalgia。 God help me if I have to write another essay on this book though。

I don't get what the big deal is supposed to be about this book。 It was so boring。 The writing was old fashioned (not my stylistic preference, but not inherently a negative) and given to going into endless descriptions at the expense of the plot or character depth。 The feminist twists didn't really feel all that twisty。 I don't get what the big deal is supposed to be about this book。 It was so boring。 The writing was old fashioned (not my stylistic preference, but not inherently a negative) and given to going into endless descriptions at the expense of the plot or character depth。 The feminist twists didn't really feel all that twisty。 。。。more

4/20/21For my women and gender studies class we read “The Bloody Chamber,” “The Courtship of Mr。 Lyon,” and “Wolf-Alice。” However, this is over 50% of the book, so I’m calling it 100% read。 However, maybe after the semester ends I will read the other stories, seeing as most of them are short。I have mixed feelings about what we read for class。 Maybe I’ll think on it and like it some more after we discuss them, but I’m not sure。

I first read an extract of this when I was about 13 in English and was so intrigued by it。 I don’t think I’d ever read a passage of gothic writing before, and I was mesmerised by the language。 Same thing happened when I eventually read the full thing aged 21! Because of how dense the language and description is, this took me a little while to get through considering it’s length。 But it was really great — and I LOVED the ending。

ARandomHufflepuff

I think my favourite story was either the courtship of Mr Lyon or The Lady of the house of Love。

I read this book for school and I was so pleasantly, and very disturbingly, surprised。 The dark themes of the story are very unsettling, and really make you think about human nature。 It was entertaining and unsettling and troubling all in one。

Except for the first story "the bloody chamber", I don't see how any of these should be called feminist。 I liked Angela carter's gothic writing and how the gore and erotic element twists the stories in an interesting way but they don't make them "feminist" at all。 Although it is an interesting read if you want to see your favourite fairytale characters you loved as a child becoming vampires, werewolves and murderous。 Except for the first story "the bloody chamber", I don't see how any of these should be called feminist。 I liked Angela carter's gothic writing and how the gore and erotic element twists the stories in an interesting way but they don't make them "feminist" at all。 Although it is an interesting read if you want to see your favourite fairytale characters you loved as a child becoming vampires, werewolves and murderous。 。。。more

I really didn’t enjoy this。 It was very uncomfortable to read at points, and there was never really a proper reason why。 It felt like they were writing traumatic endings for shock value。 There doesn’t seem to be a deeper meaning to it。 Also the writing style isn’t to my liking personally, I felt like the stories where all blending into one? It was hard to separate each story from the next。This book needs trigger warnings。 That’s the main thing I’d say, better trigger warnings stated clearly in I really didn’t enjoy this。 It was very uncomfortable to read at points, and there was never really a proper reason why。 It felt like they were writing traumatic endings for shock value。 There doesn’t seem to be a deeper meaning to it。 Also the writing style isn’t to my liking personally, I felt like the stories where all blending into one? I've just finished reading The Bloody Chamber only。 Wow。 What a claustrophobically dark, intensely atmospheric, beautifully poetic work。 Angela Carter is my kind of writer。 Connotations and imagery drip from every paragraph。 Gorgeously done。 She utilises linguistic and literary devices in a way that I love best。 So many beautiful words。 It is the mark of good writing when I slow down to savour every sentence。 It all captivated me: the gothic aesthetic, the symbolism, the poetry, the allusions to I've just finished reading The Bloody Chamber only。 Wow。 What a claustrophobically dark, intensely atmospheric, beautifully poetic work。 Angela Carter is my kind of writer。 Connotations and imagery drip from every paragraph。 Gorgeously done。 She utilises linguistic and literary devices in a way that I love best。 So many beautiful words。 It is the mark of good writing when I slow down to savour every sentence。 It all captivated me: the gothic aesthetic, the symbolism, the poetry, the allusions to familiar folklore figures such as sirens, faeries and vampires。。。 not to mention the consistent use of anastrophe throughout that is so reminiscent of the writing style of Victorian novelists to really give it that haunting, classic literature feel。。。 ah! My heart! Swoon-worthy。I am studying the story as part of my English A-level and am getting ahead before I have to complete the module。 I really enjoyed Carter's densely vivid, masterfully crafted prose and I cannot wait to study it in more depth and go over every detail thoroughly。 I have a feeling that writing an essay on this will be one of the most enjoyable parts of my course。I have not read the other stories in the collection, save for The Snow Child。 I would like to come back to this collection and read the other tales in due course, but for now am going to mark the book as read as I'd like any course-related texts to count towards my Goodreads goal for the year。 。。。more

This darkly creative re-telling of familiar tales by Angela Carter is both fun and lyrical。 I recommend it highly。

Bit disappointing。 Hoped something better and more fascinating。 First two stories made me bit angry, those female characters。。。I think that bothered me the most was how much author described everything。 How everything looked, smelled, what colors etc etc。 More that than actual action。 If you get what i am trying to say。

Some stories are longer, one is very short。 True to the title there is considerable blood shed; also there is considerable sex。Ms Carter uses similes with gusto:。。。"So Puss got his post at the same time as his boots and I dare say the Master and I have much in common for he's proud as the devil, touchy as tin-tacks, lecherous as liquorice and, though I say it as loves him, as quick-witted a rascal as ever put on clean linen。" (p。 86)。。。"'Never a girl in all Bergamo so secluded except, on Sundays, they let her go to Mass, bundled up in black, with a veil on。 And then she is in the company of an aged hag, her keeper, who grumps along grim as a prison dinner。" (p。 87)The most humorous story and one of the longest is also my favourite: Puss-in-Boots。 Here a younger wife of an older man has received a love letter from Puss's young master:"'Such tears she wept at his addresses!' says my tabby friend。 'Oh, Tabs, she sobs—for she calls me "Tabs"—I never meant to wreak such havoc with a pure heart when I smiled to see a booted cat! And put his paper next to her heart and swore, it was a good soul that sent her his vows and she was too much in love with virtue to withstand him。 If, she adds, for she's a sensible girl, he's neither old as the hills nor ugly as sin, that is。'" (p。 91)In The Lady of the House of Love - a vampire story which follows all the conventions until the end when it cheats - a young man decides to holiday in Transylvania:"Although so young, he is also rational。 He has chosen the most rational mode of transport in the world for his trip round the Carpathians。 To ride a bicycle is in itself some protection against superstitious fears, since the bicycle is the product of pure reason applied to motion。 Geometry at the service of man'! Give me two spheres and a straight line and i will show you how far I can take them。 Voltaire himself might have invented the bicycle, since it contributes so much to man's welfare and nothing at all to his bane。 Beneficial to the health, it emits no harmful fumes and permits only the most decorous speeds。 How can a bicycle ever be an implement of harm?" (p。 120)Ms Carter has a thing about wolves as she makes abundantly clear, in the final three stories particularly; getting into the nitty-gritty of wolves and wolf culture and teeth。 Also she likes using large and/or unusual words。 t。。。"we should have better music than the shrill prothalamions of the larks。。。" (p。 110)tt"prothalamion: a song in celebration of a marriage。 - Merriam-Webstert。。。"The white hands of the tenebrous belle deal the hand of destiny"。。。 (p。 116)tt"tenebrous1 : shut off from the light : dark, murkyttttt 2 : hard to understand : obscuretttt 3 : causing gloom。 - Merriam-Webstert。。。"suivez-moi。 / je vous attendais。 / vous serez ma proie。" (p。 129)tt"follow me。 / I was waiting for you。 / you will be my prey。"。 - Google translatet。。。"There is a vast melancholy in the canticles of the wolves, melancholy infinite as the forest, endless as these long nights of winter and yet that ghastly sadness, that mourning for their own, irremediable appetites, can never move the heart for not one phrase in it hints at the possibility of redemption!。。。 (p。 139)tt"canticle: song; specifically : one of several liturgical songs taken from the Bible。ttirremediable: not remediable; also : incurable。 - Merriam-Webster t。。。"Two china spaniels with liver-coloured blotches on their coats and black noses sit on either side of the fireplace。 There is a bright rug of woven rags on the pantiles。 The grandfather clock ticks away her eroding time。。。" (p。 141)ttpantile 1 : a roofing tile whose cross section is an ogee curve tttt 2 : a roofing tile of which the cross section is an arc of a circle。。。 ogee 1 : a molding with an S-shaped profile tt tt2 : a pointed arch having on each side a reversed curve near the apex。 - Merriam-Webstert"The firelight shone through the edges of her skin ; now she was clothed only in her untouched integument of flesh。 This dazzling, naked she combed out her hair with her fingers<, her hair looked white as the snow outside。 Then went directly to the man with red eyes in whose unkempt name the lice moved; she stood up on tiptoe and unbuttoned the collar of his shirt。 What big arms you have。 tAll the better to hug you with。tEvery wolf in the world now howled a prothalamion outside the window as she freely gave the kiss she owed him。tWhat big teeth you have。tShe saw how his jaw began to slaver and the room was full of the clamour of the forest's Liebestod but the wise child never flinched"。。。 (p。 146)ttintegument: something that covers or encloses especially : an enveloping layer (such as a skin。。。)。 - Merriam-Webstertt prothalamion See abovett"Liebestod" ([ˈliːbəsˌtoːt] German for "love death") is the title of the final, dramatic music from the 1859 opera Tristan und Isolde by Richard Wagner。 It is the climactic end of the opera, as Isolde sings over Tristan's dead body。 - WikipediaFrom Written in Blood by Caroline Graham – an Inspector Barnaby novel:Troy said, 'I dunno what he's on about half the time。 I thought peregrinations were birds。''Means "walking about"'。'Why can't he say so then?''Ah – that's the beauty of higher education, sergeant。 Never use two simple words when one really complicated one will do。'" And one should not use really complicated words when they do not mean what they are meant to mean: as "canticle" possibly "tenebrous" and especially "pantile"。 I know a little German a little Hindi and a lot of Swedish and English。 I don't know French and find it pretentious when used out of context, as here in a story set in Romania。 Suggestive but slightly distasteful stories。 Absolutely spot-on about bicycles。 。。。more

The Bloody Chamber is an absolute masterpiece - dark, haunting, mesmerizing。 I read it before the pandemic started, then abandoned the book for other reads。 I came back to this collection of short stories throughout 2020 and 2021。 Inspired by fairytales, weaving preconceptions, turning ideas on their head, all combined with an amazing literary talent - these stories are powerful and memorable。

Lush, creepy and grotesque。 I can't decide if I like them or not - but they are powerful stories that look at female sexuality and agency vis a vis a patriarchal/ violently misogynistic world。 My favourite is "The Bloody Chamber" - I've always hated the story of Bluebeard - but the symbolism, the tension, and pacing in this short story, reimagined, is remarkable。 Lush, creepy and grotesque。 I can't decide if I like them or not - but they are powerful stories that look at female sexuality and agency vis a vis a patriarchal/ violently misogynistic world。 My favourite is "The Bloody Chamber" - I've always hated the story of Bluebeard - but the symbolism, the tension, and pacing in this short story, reimagined, is remarkable。 。。。more
