Summary

After the events of the Fourth Trial, Martial soldiers hunt Elias and Laia as they flee the city of Serra。

Laia and Elias are determined to break into the Empire’s most secure and dangerous prison to save Laia’s brother, even if for Elias it means giving up his last chance at freedom。

They will have to fight every step of the way to outsmart their enemies: the bloodthirsty Emperor Marcus, the merciless Commandant, the sadistic Warden of Kauf, and, most heartbreaking of all, Helene, Elias’s former friend and the Empire’s newest Blood Shrike。

Bound to Marcus’s will, Helene faces a torturous mission of her own, one that might destroy her: find the traitor Elias Veturius and the Scholar slave who helped him escape。。。 and kill them both。

Thrilling book from start to finish! In the beginning I wasn't a fan of Helene but by the end of the book I was root for her and Harper。 Laia and Elias are truly a great couple love the chemistry between them。 Thrilling book from start to finish! 4。5 stars because of the excitement I had toward the end of the book。It would have been a clean 5/5, but the first half felt like a filler。Having said that, I like the execution of this gem of a book。 I adore Elias, Laia, and Helene (team Aquilla all the way)。And I like how morally grey Harper Avitas is (I was rooting for him, too)。Izzi and even Keenan were delightful。There's action, fantasy, suspense and a couple of bold decisions taken by the author, Sabaa Tahir, that made me appreciate her ef 4。5 stars because of the excitement I had toward the end of the book。It would have been a clean 5/5, but the first half felt like a filler。Having said that, I like the execution of this gem of a book。 I adore Elias, Laia, and Helene (team Aquilla all the way)。And I like how morally grey Harper Avitas is (I was rooting for him, too)。Izzi and even Keenan were delightful。There's action, fantasy, suspense and a couple of bold decisions taken by the author, Sabaa Tahir, that made me appreciate her efforts even more。 。。。more

Just when I thought I could not possibly be as enthralled in book 2, Sabaa Tahir was like “just you WAIT。” SO good!!!

Great and interesting story。 Will definitely be continuing the series。 I think it's just my mindset right now, but I'm not in love with this story like I feel I normally would be。 Great and interesting story。 Will definitely be continuing the series。 I think it's just my mindset right now, but I'm not in love with this story like I feel I normally would be。 。。。more

Torn between a 3 and a 4, more because of the level of hopelessness, violence, and genocide than the writing itselfLots of TWs here: death, murder, (mention of) suicide, cutting, slavery, torture, genocide, mutilationPros- The Soul Catcher- The mythology- Avitas, Helen, Afya and TasNeutral- Laia and EliasCons- All of the death and destruction- The Nightbringer, the Commandant and the Augurs

Most sequels are worse than the first one, but this was better??? And the first one was already amazing。—TWs: death, violence, torture, PTSD, genocide, mass murder including children, sexual assault, emotional manipulation。

I was going to give this 2 stars but then the plot near the very end really got me。The only thing is that I don't care about any of the characters so it was a bit hard to care about the story as well at some points。(I also can't remember the last time I rolled my eyes so much while reading a book)You could say that it's a love hate relationship between this book and I。 I was going to give this 2 stars but then the plot near the very end really got me。The only thing is that I don't care about any of the characters so it was a bit hard to care about the story as well at some points。(I also can't remember the last time I rolled my eyes so much while reading a book)You could say that it's a love hate relationship between this book and I。 。。。more

this book was a ROLLERCOASTER of emotions。 all the plottwists had me on the edge of my seat and i literally couldnt put it down。 some parts made me so angry, others made me wanna cry and other gave me 🦋🦋 (mostly the laia and elias scenes)。 anyways this book was so so good and this series is already one of my all time favorites。

Initial thoughts-love the story, it’s original and the plot twists are inventive and plentiful -the characters are developing with the plot-the major issue is the lack of information about places and people in the world。 Sometimes they are just thrown in without context and the impact is lost。 (I。e。 without knowing where a territory is and who lives there how are we supposed to know it’s importance in a war?)Full review to come!

I finished reading the first book, An Ember in the Ashes, almost exactly six years ago。 Yes, that's right。。。 it's been SIX years! I really can't give an answer as to why I haven't been able to get around to reading the sequel, A Torch Against the Night, faster because I just don't know。 But thanks to the My TBR List meme and those voting for the book I finally have read it。 Do I regret waiting so long to read it? Hell yes because this book was hella epic!I've got to admit that the start of the book was a little slow for me but I think that's normal when it's been so long since I've been in this world。 Luckily the more I read in it and the more I got reacquainted with the characters the more I started loving the book。 Soon it was hard to stop reading, I was that into it。I absolutely loved that A Torch Against the Night had three narrators, I had forgotten that about the first book。 Multiple narrators are one of my favorite things in books because it always brings so much more to a story for me。 I equally loved all of the narrators but I've got to admit that I was really a fan of Helene's POV。 Don't get me wrong I loved reading Laia and Elias' points of view also but Helene's character is so complex and intriguing。 I can't wait to see where her character goes next。I think in my review of the first book all those years ago I wrote that the world in this book is a harsh one and my view on that hasn't changed at all。 It's a very harsh world and I could see so many resemblences with how our world has been in the past and is now。 But that only made this book all the more compelling in my opinion。Will I be continuing the series now that I have finally read this book? Yes I absolutely will。 I don't plan on waiting another six years to continue。 In fact, I have already bought the next book and am planning on reading it when I finish my current read。 I can't wait to see what's going to happen next。 。。。more

4。5 starsI。 Love。 This。The plot twists throughout, the writing, the characters, everything。 I did feel the ending was slightly rushed, but that may have just been me rushing through it。 I haven’t gotten around to annotating my books (I don’t have the tabs) but this is one of the books that is so packed with quotes I wish I did annotate!Character wise, I really liked the development of both Laia and Elias, as well as getting Helene’s perspective。 Once again, this book made me cry, and I love how 4。5 starsI。 Love。 This。The plot twists throughout, the writing, the characters, everything。 I did feel the ending was slightly rushed, but that may have just been me rushing through it。 I haven’t gotten around to annotating my books (I don’t have the tabs) but this is one of the books that is so packed with quotes I wish I did annotate!Character wise, I really liked the development of both Laia and Elias, as well as getting Helene’s perspective。 Once again, this book made me cry, and I love how developed all the characters are- Izzi, Afya, Tas (I love him), and Cook- who is super interesting and I have my theories!Relationship wise, I still love all the friendships and familial relationships。 I was so angry throughout half the book, because Laia and Elias weren’t together- I’m also not a huge fan of love triangles, but I knew my hunches were correct! As well as that, the ending made me so happy!Plot wise, there were so many plot twists I didn’t expect in the slightest, and this is such a fast paced book, with so much action that you can never be bored reading it。 I also liked the journeying in this one, and how we got to see different areas of the empire。Overall, fantastic and I can’t wait to read the next book! 。。。more

4。25 stars。 The beginning felt boring to me but I found myself captivated near the end as the stakes were so high and the mysteries were being revealed。 Loved the plot twist with Keenan but the death element and the soul catcher, not so much。

I’m so intrigued by this seriesThere were choices narratively that I could have done without but I have to admit the reveal of The Nightbringer has me invested in a big way。 Lots of torture depicted in these stories but despite the ruthlessness (and hopelessness) I think I’m still going to pick up book three。
