Summary

From the widely acclaimed HOW TO TALK series, discover tried and tested communication strategies to survive and thrive with kids ages 2-7

The all-new content in this book deals with struggles familiar to every parent, relative, teacher and childminder。 How do you respond to the toddler who won't brush his teeth? The preschooler who pinches the baby? The child who throws everything she can reach?

It's hard to be a little kid。 It's hard to be an adult responsible for that little kid。 And it's really hard to think about effective communication when the toast is burning, the baby is crying and you're exhausted。

This book will help readers do just that。 Organized according to everyday challenges and conflicts, and including real-life examples and the series' trademark cartoons, this book is a survival manual of communication tools, including a chapter that addresses the special needs of children with sensory processing or autism spectrum disorders。

There is so much useful advice in this book, I think I’ll have to read it once or twice a year to continue digesting it。

A great book of information, strategies and examples。

This is the best parenting book I have read。 Note: I recognize there are bound to be strong preferences of what is in a parenting book! But here is what I liked:-the authors are vulnerable and make it clear that they aren’t perfect, I don’t feel like I’m being spoken down to from someone that always knows what to do and has angelic children! -this book is thorough! There are several tools given for different categories, then those tools are further explained by talking about different situations This is the best parenting book I have read。 Note: I recognize there are bound to be strong preferences of what is in a parenting book! This was a great read, and well written! Parenting books can seem so daunting, but I love ones that use lots of stories and real life examples。 This book, among others (The Whole Brain Child), are teaching me to practice patience and to exercise my thoughts and emotions before lashing my frustrations on a small child who is testing my limits。 I’ve been able to think about and change the way I react in stressful, chaotic, tantrum filled scenarios, and practice peaceful problem solving, love, and This was a great read, and well written! A little repetitive, but presents some good tips! I can't quite get behind the "no real consequences" thing, but I will try to incorporate some of the other tips。 A little repetitive, but presents some good tips! I wish the book didn’t end。 Its the most useful parenting book i’ve ever read and i sure wasnt ready to part from the sympathetic guidance。 The book was very nicely written with vast ranges of practical tools to use you can use on the spot。 Especially helpful during these continuous lockdowns from the pandemic when you’ve got no childcare institutions to count on。 I would definitely recommend the audiobook。

The next time I tell you my kid is a snot, remind me that it is probably all my fault because I failed to follow one of the 27 idealistic-but-honestly-doable-so-long-as-you-never-even-once-take-the-quick-or-lazy-way-out actionable parenting improvement techniques helpfully outlined and illustrated in this book。 I aspire to parent like this, but I also aspire not to cook microwave chicken nuggets for multiple toddler dinners every week, and we all know how that turned out。 A lot of good pragmatic The next time I tell you my kid is a snot, remind me that it is probably all my fault because I failed to follow one of the 27 idealistic-but-honestly-doable-so-long-as-you-never-even-once-take-the-quick-or-lazy-way-out actionable parenting improvement techniques helpfully outlined and illustrated in this book。 I aspire to parent like this, but I also aspire not to cook microwave chicken nuggets for multiple toddler dinners every week, and we all know how that turned out。 A lot of good pragmatic advice in this book that I will try to follow though, and partial improvement beats not trying, right? 。。。more

I enjoyed the layout of this book with the tactic explained, a story to illustrate, and a quick reference page at the end of each section。

What can I say? It's a book about talking to toddlers。 Not exactly a scintillating narrative。 Practical and concrete though! 3。5My husband and I learned a lot from this book which is good and helpful。 We even printed the cheat sheet in case we need to look at it without needing to shuffle through the book。 A lot of the principles were repeated and the general feeling is the same which isn't bad, we humans need repetition right? Such good information- not wholly new but a reminder never hurts! Everyone needs a reminder that people are people, children just being smaller ones。 We must give them the same grace we receive and also the tools to learn for themselves。

There’s good quality stuff in here, and parents will definitely find tips and tools which can help with common issues。

This book is amazing, and it has helped me a lot with parenting my 2 and 5 year olds。 I am not a serial parenting book reader, so I came to this pretty fresh, really just wanting to feel a bit less rage when interacting with my kids。 This book delivers, and I am so grateful that I found it when I did。 If you have young kids in your life, I highly recommend this book。

4。5 stars only because Toni was annoying as hell and some of the tactics I know won’t work for my kid because she’s explicitly told me so (specifically putting her in charge of her brothers - she has mentioned numerous times she’s not their parent & she doesn’t want to be responsible for watching them 🤷🏻‍♀️😑)。 Otherwise there were some great tools for communicating more effectively that I’m going to start utilizing

Liliana Atkins

Great book to help parents through toddlerhood and elementary。 I’ve tried some “tools” already with my own children and they really work!

So since Covid has started I’ve been struggling as a parent, mainly with my oldest who is now 8。 I know the books recommends for children 2-7 but I still assumed it would help。 I think this book is great for parents who have children age 5 and under。 I have tried some of the techniques with my youngest who is 4, and they have been working。 Not going to lie, I suck with communication skills and this book is just a lot of communication tips。 I like that it makes you stop and think “is this how I w So since Covid has started I’ve been struggling as a parent, mainly with my oldest who is now 8。 I know the books recommends for children 2-7 but I still assumed it would help。 I think this book is great for parents who have children age 5 and under。 I have tried some of the techniques with my youngest who is 4, and they have been working。 Not going to lie, I suck with communication skills and this book is just a lot of communication tips。 I like that it makes you stop and think “is this how I would want to be spoken to?” The book mentions kids on the autism spectrum so I recommended it to a couple friends who children are on the spectrum。 Overall I liked the book and am thinking of buying a copy so I can go back to it if needed。 I hope the authors write one about older children, I know her mother has one out but that is from the 90’s。 I think I may still check it out but would like something a little more current。 。。。more

I wish I could give this book even more stars。 The best parenting advice I’ve ever read。 Already putting a ton of it into practice with excellent results。

Kimberly

This should be required reading for all parents。 You should just automatically get a copy the day your kid turns 2 years old。

Shakib Hikmat

This book had numerous real life scenarios regarding conflict, communication, education, and many other subjects that a parent may come across with their children and advice on how to deal with each。 I would recommend this book to anyone (parent or not) who may end up dealing with children in some capacity。

Courtney M

I started putting these tips into practice as I was going through it, and struggles with my threenager have already lessened。 I expect to be flipping back through this as the years go。

Rachel Catley

Incredibly helpful advice。 Presented in a clear and easy to understand format。 It’s repetitive but that helps to make the points clear。 It’s largely story based which is both helpful and slightly annoying。 The characters don’t all ring completely true but they are quite fun to follow along with。 Poor Toni gets a raw deal of being the neigh-sayer。

Jamie

Loved all the practical help。 One I’ll read again and again and reference often!

This book should be handed out at every kid's two year wellness check。 Might save a lot of tears from toddlers and parents alike。 Appreciate all of the tools provided in this book, along with the acknowledgment that each kiddo and situation is different。 And I think what I really needed, at this moment in my life, was the reminder that it is ok to set boundaries for myself and some helpful/positive ways to reinforce them。 This book should be handed out at every kid's two year wellness check。 Might save a lot of tears from toddlers and parents alike。 Appreciate all of the tools provided in this book, along with the acknowledgment that each kiddo and situation is different。 And I think what I really needed, at this moment in my life, was the reminder that it is ok to set boundaries for myself and some helpful/positive ways to reinforce them。 。。。more

This was a really good book to read! It was a little on the longer side but it wasn’t that hard to read。 It essentially could be a quick read。 The great thing is that the book is written in a way that you could easily skim back to information you really need。 It was written well and I honestly think that everything that the book makes sense。 The old school ways of parenting are acknowledged, but I firmly believe in a less detrimental way of dealing with kids。 As a day care teacher I cannot wait This was a really good book to read! This book has some great concepts and ideas to put into your bag for parenting。 I liked how it comes from an angle of compassion and kindness。It was super gratifying to recognize some things we already do as parents, then to add to it。 I put into practice what I learned as I learned it, and it was successful! One of the parents in the class teaching chapters was hostile about parenting, other parents, and the method。 Maybe it is accurate, but it fit weirdly in with what the book was aiming to teach。 。。。more
