Summary

With all the fire and fury fans have come to expect from internationally bestselling author George R。 R。 Martin, this is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros。

Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen—the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria—took up residence on Dragonstone。 Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart。

What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why did it become so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What is the origin of Daenerys’s three dragon eggs? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel and featuring more than eighty all-new black-and-white illustrations by artist Doug Wheatley。 Readers have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire, but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed。

With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbon’s The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire and Blood is the ultimate game of thrones, giving readers a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody, and always fascinating history of Westeros。

An absolute monument of worldbuilding。 It really felt like I was reading an actual history and it was very interesting to see how much of a political an military influence dragons can be。 It became a slog to get through after a while though, with the literally hundreds of names of people, places, swords, dragons and more to keep track of。 The gorgeous illustrations helped in that regard by giving faces to characters。

The idea of this book is brilliant and the fact that there is so much depth and detail to a family in the gameOf thrones series is so interesting but it just didn’t excite me like the books in a song of ice and fire! I wasn’t excited to read on。 Although very interesting, it really wasn’t my fave。 I bet the series is good!

My favorite part was the one with Jahaerys I and Alysanne and all the wrongs they knew with their children。

When it was announced the GRRM was dropped a new book, I know that I, as well as 99% of the GoT fans, hoped it would be Winds of Winter。But in Fire and Blood, GRRM has really added more depth to an already incredible, immersive world and I couldn't wait to find out more about such a messed up family! It was so good。 I listened to the audiobook and it was so well narrated。 Highly recommended! Not my cup of tea。 More of a (fictional) secondary source than a novel, Fire and Blood was。。。 mediocre。 The occasional inappropriate remarks by Mushroom, the beautiful illustration and the witty dialogue can only do so much to a book that is focused on wars and policies and petty men。 There were highlights。 Aegon's Conquest is described in much detail and a great deal of powerful lines were delivered。 I absolutely enjoyed reading about Viserys I's reign。 The set up for the Dance of the Dragons w Not my cup of tea。 More of a (fictional) secondary source than a novel, Fire and Blood was。。。 mediocre。 The occasional inappropriate remarks by Mushroom, the beautiful illustration and the witty dialogue can only do so much to a book that is focused on wars and policies and petty men。 There were highlights。 Aegon's Conquest is described in much detail and a great deal of powerful lines were delivered。 I absolutely enjoyed reading about Viserys I's reign。 The set up for the Dance of the Dragons was impressive。 (view spoiler)[ You feel the struggles of Viserys I。 He really wants his wife and his daughter to like each other。 Yet we, as readers, can only watch as the Blacks and the Greens grow more and more hostile under their disguise of a big happy family。 (hide spoiler)] I definitely need to take a look at "The Princess and the Queen" and "The Rogue Prince" for that matter。Neither the Blacks nor the Greens are truly likeable。 (view spoiler)[ Alicent Hightower is an ambitious woman who is clever, cautious and proud。 Sometimes downright toxic。 Daemon Targaryen is your classic bad boy。 To him, wars are games to keep him distracted。 He's fun, but also cruel。 "An eye for an eye, a son for a son" and the consequent cold-blooded murder of Prince Jaehaerys has to be one of the most chilling moments in the book。 Rhaenyra makes some questionable choices。 Aegon the Elder is an idiot and Aemond is just insufferable。 (hide spoiler)] The actual civil war had sections that seemed to drag on and on and on 。 They didn't seem to be necessary and I felt myself wither away。 This happened several times throughout the book which gave me the impression that maybe it was unnecessarily complex。 Names and places are thrown around constantly and it's easy to get lost。 I would argue that the key to successful world building isn't to make it as complicated as possible。If you're looking for a book to pass time, this is not it。 If you are a die-hard ASOIAF fan, go ahead and purchase this to complete your collection, but this book isn't necessary for a thorough understanding of the main series。 。。。more

This (very long) summation of the history of the Targaryens as rulers in Westeros held my attention through Jaehaerys and Alysanne。。。then it got tedious。 There are just too many branches on that particular family tree。 Without having the written genealogy in front of me, it was damned near impossible to remember who was who, and the whole point of listening to the audiobook is because I didn’t *want* to read the book。 While mildly entertaining (until it bogged itself down), this “history” would This (very long) summation of the history of the Targaryens as rulers in Westeros held my attention through Jaehaerys and Alysanne。。。then it got tedious。 There are just too many branches on that particular family tree。 Without having the written genealogy in front of me, it was damned near impossible to remember who was who, and the whole point of listening to the audiobook is because I didn’t *want* to read the book。 While mildly entertaining (until it bogged itself down), this “history” would have been more welcome after ASOIAF wrapped。 I join the incredulous chorus of long-time, long-suffering readers who cannot believe that GRRM chose to focus on this instead of “The Winds of Winter。” 。。。more

I enjoyed reading the Game of Thrones books - though not the show, which was nothing but garbage - however, I think Martin has finally lost his mind。 He has spent untold years creating a fake world, filled with fake people, fake battles, fake alliances。。。。and dragons。 His first efforts, having been met with wide acclaim for their inventiveness, have apparently sent him further into this fake world, where he has compiled the most boring list of fakery, yet。 I read over 150 pages of this 706 page I enjoyed reading the Game of Thrones books - though not the show, which was nothing but garbage - however, I think Martin has finally lost his mind。 He has spent untold years creating a fake world, filled with fake people, fake battles, fake alliances。。。。and dragons。 His first efforts, having been met with wide acclaim for their inventiveness, have apparently sent him further into this fake world, where he has compiled the most boring list of fakery, yet。 I read over 150 pages of this 706 page tome - waiting for a story to emerge - only to discover that there was no point to the whole thing。 An excerpt: "These are the names of Aegon's Seven, as written in the White Book of the Kingsguard: Ser Richard Roote; Ser Addison Hill, Bastard of Cornfield; Ser Gregor Goode; Ser Griffith Goode, his brother; Ser Humfrey the Mummer; Ser Robin Darklyn, called Darkrobin; and Ser Corlys Velaryon, Lord Commander。" Some of them are killed on the next page。 Why list them all for us? YAWN! There is a litany of this type of meaningless detail。 It's like entering the mind of a madman to turn the pages。 My time, and I would venture to say, the time of any other reader would be better spent reading a REAL book of REAL history。 I read for entertainment and enlightenment。 This book accomplishes neither。 And。。。。。。there's a SECOND ONE????? 。。。more

True to the title, this “historical text” had a lot of fire and blood (and incest, lots of that too。)The tv show is going to be 🔥 Kudos to Mr。 Martin for writing whatever inspires him, even though we are all waiting for the next book(s) of the actual series。

This book and The World of Ice and Fire are unbearable, far worse than the wonderful asoiaf novels。 Most of it feels like lazy world building because yay, and when it tells a well thought out story, it is ruined by the horrible style of narrative, totally emotionless。 Even if you consider it as a fictional history book, it isn't well done。 The ways in which it talks about about private manners, or popular proverbs, or specific conversations, etc, isn't believable。And people claim that this is li This book and The World of Ice and Fire are unbearable, far worse than the wonderful asoiaf novels。 Most of it feels like lazy world building because yay, and when it tells a well thought out story, it is ruined by the horrible style of narrative, totally emotionless。 Even if you consider it as a fictional history book, it isn't well done。 The ways in which it talks about about private manners, or popular proverbs, or specific conversations, etc, isn't believable。And people claim that this is like George R。R。 Martin's Silmarillion? I wanted to read this before any GOT prequel came out but also to know more about Westerosi lore of course。 Some people compare this to The Silmarrilion but I think it's quite different; it is history yes, but Tolkien's book has a LOT more。 Said that, Fire and Blood is better since I retained more of its plot and characters, so it has better pacing no doubt。 Excited to see HBO's take on the Dance of Dragons。 I wanted to read this before any GOT prequel came out but also to know more about Westerosi lore of course。 Some people compare this to The Silmarrilion but I think it's quite different; it is history yes, but Tolkien's book has a LOT more。 Said that, Fire and Blood is better since I retained more of its plot and characters, so it has better pacing no doubt。 Excited to see HBO's take on the Dance of Dragons。 。。。more

Has George possibly bitten off more than he can chew and is thus avoiding, or unable, to continue the series? Get some other authors to help if that what it takes! Honestly, I don't think I will continue the series until it has a narrative end, which means likely I won't, so for any who haven't read the series, give that some consideration。 Then again, if it is going the same direction as the TV series final season, I definitely will not continue! 。。。more

Had to finally make it DNF。 Usually that’s an automatic 1 star but I did genuinely enjoy it while I was reading。 It just dragged forever and there were so many places and names。 Too much like reading a European history book。 Although formatting it as story did help。

For a GRRM novel in a historical format I was preparing to fall asleep sitting up reading this (received book as a gift, not sure I would have picked it up otherwise tbh), however it was quite good and definitely had better editing that some of the main series。 Only real complaint I would have liked for a more natural climax as the ending felt kinda flat。 I didn’t feel on the edge of my seat to pick up the next book。 Overall, not bad。
