Summary

People lived because she killed。 People died because he lived。

Zafira is the Hunter, disguising herself as a man when she braves the cursed forest of the Arz to feed her people。 Nasir is the Prince of Death, assassinating those foolish enough to defy his autocratic father, the sultan。 If Zafira was exposed as a girl, all of her achievements would be rejected; if Nasir displayed his compassion, his father would punish him in the most brutal of ways。 Both Zafira and Nasir are legends in the kingdom of Arawiya—but neither wants to be。

War is brewing, and the Arz sweeps closer with each passing day, engulfing the land in shadow。 When Zafira embarks on a quest to uncover a lost artifact that can restore magic to her suffering world and stop the Arz, Nasir is sent by the sultan on a similar mission: retrieve the artifact and kill the Hunter。 But an ancient evil stirs as their journey unfolds—and the prize they seek may pose a threat greater than either can imagine。

Set in a world inspired by ancient Arabia。

I’m no longer in a reading slump。The storytelling is a 10/10The slow burn romance is a 10/10The plot is a 10/10The characters are a 10/10The witty banter is a 10/10The world building is out of this world, pun very much intended。If you love reading about fabulous fantasy tales, especially ones inspired by real world cultures, trust me when I tell you this is the one。

i really enjoyed this! while there were some parts that were a bit confusing (i think Faizal's only weak points in this were the fight scenes), it was overall a really good, fleshed out read。 both zafira and nasir were amazing characters, and their relationship together was one of the highlights of the book。 i think maybe Benyamin and Kifah could've used a bit more characterization, but hopefully in the next book one of them will (obviously we know which one。。。but i'm trying to avoid spoilers he i really enjoyed this! while there were some parts that were a bit confusing (i think Faizal's only weak points in this were the fight scenes), it was overall a really good, fleshed out read。 both zafira and nasir were amazing characters, and their relationship together was one of the highlights of the book。 i think maybe Benyamin and Kifah could've used a bit more characterization, but hopefully in the next book one of them will (obviously we know which one。。。but i'm trying to avoid spoilers here)。 excited for the next one! 。。。more

I made a meme to express how I feel about certain characters but idk how to get the link to add it here so I made my own: 🦋 Altair and Nasirme:🧍🏽‍♀️ Is this。。。。 queerbaiting??I don’t think I can give this book more than 2。5 stars 😭😭Aside from the terrible queerbaiting there’s this direct quote:Her mind conjured the moment she’d felled him during their own fight earlier in the day。 His body beneath hers without the barrier of her cloak between them。 His lips close to her skin。 His depthless eyes I made a meme to express how I feel about certain characters but idk how to get the link to add it here so I made my own: 🦋 Altair and Nasirme:🧍🏽‍♀️ Is this。。。。 queerbaiting??I don’t think I can give this book more than 2。5 stars 😭😭Aside from the terrible queerbaiting there’s this direct quote:Her mind conjured the moment she’d felled him during their own fight earlier in the day。 His body beneath hers without the barrier of her cloak between them。 His lips close to her skin。 His depthless eyes dark and knowing。 The way he had seized up, the way his breathing had quickened, something crackled in her chest。He’s a murderer。And she was starting to forget that he was。Um, what?? 😀 (view spoiler)[Didn’t he kill your friend?? I enjoyed this duet。 I'm not sure how I really felt about the romance parts of it -which is arguably a large part, to me that was really boring。。。 but the world was interesting and I would gladly revisit it。 I would read novels set here several times over。 This was great。 It's fun seeing a fantasy quest set in a different world than I'm used to reading about。 I really appreciate it and I hope to see more novels from this author。 I enjoyed this duet。 I'm not sure how I really felt about the romance parts of it -which is arguably a large part, to me that was really boring。。。 but the world was interesting and I would gladly revisit it。 I would read novels set here several times over。 This was great。 It's fun seeing a fantasy quest set in a different world than I'm used to reading about。 I really appreciate it and I hope to see more novels from this author。 。。。more

i was immediately capitulated from the very beginning, the characters the roles the world-building and everything about the WRITING definitely deserved a round of applause。 the writing was what struck me the most, the author used such beautiful phrases and tossed in comedic remarks (mostly stated by altair LOL) that would lighten the mood even during a war zone ?!?! this was such an incredible book highlighting and focusing the struggles of a woman in a world where no one expects you to succeed i was immediately capitulated from the very beginning, the characters the roles the world-building and everything about the WRITING definitely deserved a round of applause。 the writing was what struck me the most, the author used such beautiful phrases and tossed in comedic remarks (mostly stated by altair LOL) that would lighten the mood even during a war zone ?!?! this was such an incredible book highlighting and focusing the struggles of a woman in a world where no one expects you to succeed or thrive。 i really loved how we were able to read from both nasir and zafira’s perspectives as it gave way to many points of tension and suspense when things would be left unfinished from one pov then continued onto the other’s pov。 “people lived because she killed” - zafira’s character was one i could tremendously relate to as her bold and hard exterior with a wall built with fearlessness and seeking vulnerability and pride drew me in quickly。 “people does because he lived” - nasir’s troubled history with love and really working with others to fight for one cause really helped with making me fawn over him as he’s learnt to truly accept that there are people out there who care for him and don’t steer the opposite direction the moment he steps foot anywhere as he’s known as the prince of death。 i also loved how the tension between the two of them was so breath-taking 😩 only one scene with full-on intimacy (which didn’t last that long anyway) and yet i didn’t expect myself loving the hammering of my chest as i waited for the both of them to end up alone together in a room by chance in every chapter 💔 - raine <3 。。。more

I hope so。 I’m still kind of mad。 (I’m mostly mad because his death and Kulsum’s betrayal felt like it was just a way to get rid of the two mc’s love interests so that they can fall for each other without the guilt/drama of full on rejection)。 The writing felt a little choppy in some areas。 There wasn’t really an explanation for how things happened, they suddenly just did。 The things that happened came out of nowhere but weirdly enough they weren’t at all surprising。 Like I knew they were going to happen (none of the plot twists felt like plot twists) they just happened in weird ways。 And I really hated it when This Kept onHappening。 It was ok the first few times but then it was overused and I no longer liked it。 Wow。 It really sounds like I disliked the book。 I didn’t。 I quite enjoyed it but I suppose my reading slump brain ruined a bit of the experience for me and made me focus on the things that annoyed me。 I’m a huge mood reader and I hate when this happens。 Hopefully the second book will be even better! 。。。more

Honestly, the only reason it's not getting the full 5 is because it took me a little bit to get into the story, and I never felt like I couldn't put it down。 BUT。 I did really love this book。 Finally a quest that didn't seem to drag despite the traveling。 Intriguing characters that each had their own backstory and purpose。 Unseen connections。 A believable enemies to lovers romance。 I will say I guessed at some of the twists, but not all of them, which was a really nice touch! This book deserves a nice 4。5/5! The beginning was slow, but i dont know how to describe it。。。 a slow but not "boring" slow。 I really added to the story。 The rest of the book had me on the edge of my seat, pages flying, anticipating every scene。 Literally。 Brilliant characters, though some remain quite unexploited and brilliant plot although i was confused at times。 ••• spoilers•••Why did Nasir have to say "This means nothing" OMG my heart😩 I was so mad at him! Okay, let’s start with what I loved: the cover, the side characters (Altair, I love you), and the idea of needing to bring magic back to a world being covered in darkness。 However。。。。 the main characters fall flat, the pacing doesn’t work well for me, and it felt like we just jumped into the journey far too quickly。 Yes I’m going to read the second book to finish the duology, but had this been the beginning to a long series? I might be deterred from reading the rest。 Still might buy a hardcover Okay, let’s start with what I loved: the cover, the side characters (Altair, I love you), and the idea of needing to bring magic back to a world being covered in darkness。 However。。。。 the main characters fall flat, the pacing doesn’t work well for me, and it felt like we just jumped into the journey far too quickly。 Yes I’m going to read the second book to finish the duology, but had this been the beginning to a long series? It was ok/good。 B- Enjoyable enough if a bit disjointed。 It wasn’t amazing but it also wasn’t terrible。 I enjoyed it enough that I want to read the sequel。 I hear the next book is more fleshed out and better written。 It has a lot of potential, so I hope that’s true。

Me encanto!!!!

DNF - I started reading this book June last year, got about half way through and then put it down in favour of reading something else。 I've thought about picking it back up multiple times as it's the only book I've currently got half read, but I just can't bring myself to feel excited for it。I had really high hopes for this book when I bought it, as I really like books that have got Arabic influence and desert adventure vibes, but I felt really let down with the story。 The two main characters ar DNF - I started reading this book June last year, got about half way through and then put it down in favour of reading something else。 I've thought about picking it back up multiple times as it's the only book I've currently got half read, but I just can't bring myself to feel excited for it。I had really high hopes for this book when I bought it, as I really like books that have got Arabic influence and desert adventure vibes, but I felt really let down with the story。 The two main characters are very bland, and I feel like no one has a distinct personality。 I have to be careful here, as I'm relying on my memory of this book from summer last year, so my recollection is a little sketchy, but there is hardly anything that happened in that book that I can go "ah yes, I remember this part of the story"。 It's a real shame, as I don't like to leave books unfinished, but I feel by forcing myself through the last half, I'll end up putting myself in a reading slump。 If you're looking for something with a similar vibe, but good pacing, I recommend trying Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton。 。。。more

This book was really good! It was a bit of a mixed bag when it came to the descriptive writing (sometimes I would eagerly reread beautiful sentences, other times roll my eyes at oft-used words and phrases), but I enjoyed the world-building and the romance。 This author is definitely one to watch!

I learned of this book on Booktok where everyone and their mother was raving about it。 I very much enjoyed it, although I think it took me until Act 2 to really get into the story。 Once I was there, it was an enjoyable read。 I'm also here for a good enemies to lovers story and this one did not disappoint。 I do have to say there may have been one too many plot twists in the second half。 A lot of "reveals。" that being said, I enjoyed this world and am looking forward to reading the second book。 I learned of this book on Booktok where everyone and their mother was raving about it。 I very much enjoyed it, although I think it took me until Act 2 to really get into the story。 Once I was there, it was an enjoyable read。 I'm also here for a good enemies to lovers story and this one did not disappoint。 I do have to say there may have been one too many plot twists in the second half。 A lot of "reveals。" that being said, I enjoyed this world and am looking forward to reading the second book。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Hafsah Faizal hooked me onto this book with 'people lived because she killed' and 'people died because he lived'。 I just knew from that moment I was going to adore the characters and their development throughout the duology (I've already started We Free the Stars and let me tell you, I cannot wait for THAT scene Hafsah posted fanart about in January)。 Nasir's development throughout the whole book is brilliant, although he's still not perfect (ch83 you still hurt me), he's trying。 He showed compa Hafsah Faizal hooked me onto this book with 'people lived because she killed' and 'people died because he lived'。 I just knew from that moment I was going to adore the characters and their development throughout the duology (I've already started We Free the Stars and let me tell you, I cannot wait for THAT scene Hafsah posted fanart about in January)。 Nasir's development throughout the whole book is brilliant, although he's still not perfect (ch83 you still hurt me), he's trying。 He showed compassion from the beginning and started to embrace who he truly was, without the title Prince of Death。 It's safe to say Zafira had my heart (both with love and aching for her) from the beginning, from her struggling to reveal her gender to the Demenhune, to her wanting to find love and acceptance from her people as herself, to her realising she has barely reached her full potential and will continue to grow so much as her story has just begun。 The romance (although not really romance because they barely even kissed until the last few chapters and technically it was to distract so。。。。) was even better than I expected。 I knew it was going to be a slow burn but wow did it entrap me from page to page。 The awkward tension, the jealously and the protection they feel for one another is honestly so exciting to me。 At first neither wanted to admit they felt something for the other, but they kept getting drawn back again and again without consequence。I cannot wait to see where Zafira and Nasir's relationship goes as you just know it's going to be a heart wrenching journey。 It didn't take away from the plot one bit, which is what I love to see。I'm so excited to continue reading onto We Free the Stars to get to know other characters, such as Yasmine, Misk and Lana, and even Altair who we already know so much about (but oh my goodness!!!! the plot twist about his parents, although the father was a little predictable after we found out who his mother was, I still gasped)。 They're going to become crucial parts of the story, I'm already holding my breath when Altair and Yasmine finally interact because I love them both dearly and don't want either of them to get anymore hurt then they already are。 The plot line kept me engaged throughout the whole book。 Restoring magic has got to be one of my favourite tropes (hence my love for the Throne of Glass series), the excitement of characters realising there is so much more to life then what they were given makes the story such a page turner。 The realisation that the evil they are facing is much larger then they imagined, and finally leaning on each other (because come on, I think the zumra has captured everybody's hearts)。 I completely recommend this book anyone and everyone, before reading I only heard good reviews and there was a reason for that。 Hafsah is an amazing storyteller and I beg you to read We Hunt the Flame because you'll fall in love like I did。 。。。more
