Summary

In 1187, Christian Europe was shaken by events in the Middle East。 This volume tells the story of those momentous months - the campaign leading to the Muslim capture of Jerusalem after the disastrous Crusader defeat at Hattin where, in a two day running battle on the waterless plateau between Saffuriya and Tiberias, beneath a burning sun, Saladin's troops destroyed the Christian army。 The disaster at Hattin resulted in the collapse of the kingdom of Jerusalem and sparked off the Third Crusade under Richard I 'Coeur de Lion'。 This book examines Hattin in detail and looks at the consequences of the battle。

Like most Nicolle books his transition between subjects and ideas is often abrupt and some background knowledge is needed here; even I was confused in the opening chapter。 Yet, he is a fair historian, and that is evident here。 Saladin comes across not as genius or even a great man, but a talented man who knew how to take advantage of a situation。

One of better books in Osprey Campaigns series。 Well-structured sections give condensed view of political situation before the battle, an overview of leaders and troops involved and preliminary plans of both sides。 The battle itself is covered in some 10 pages, with excellent maps and explanations。 This gives a good understanding of how the battle developed。 Also worth noticing is that David Nicolle goes to great length in pinpointing some of the myths surrounding the battle and when appropriate One of better books in Osprey Campaigns series。 Well-structured sections give condensed view of political situation before the battle, an overview of leaders and troops involved and preliminary plans of both sides。 The battle itself is covered in some 10 pages, with excellent maps and explanations。 This gives a good understanding of how the battle developed。 Also worth noticing is that David Nicolle goes to great length in pinpointing some of the myths surrounding the battle and when appropriate, deflates them。 。。。more
