Summary

3。5 stars。 (But HOW to rate biographies anyway?)Since I'm not from the United States, I read the book from a relatively neutral perspective。 Obama can definitely express himself in writing, and I learned things about him and American politics that were previously unknown to me。 I'm glad I invested so much time in this book。With almost 1000 pages (German translation), it is probably inevitable that I found some passages slightly redundant。 Other aspects on which I would have loved to read his opi 3。5 stars。 (But HOW to rate biographies anyway?)Since I'm not from the United States, I read the book from a relatively neutral perspective。 Obama can definitely express himself in writing, and I learned things about him and American politics that were previously unknown to me。 I'm glad I invested so much time in this book。With almost 1000 pages (German translation), it is probably inevitable that I found some passages slightly redundant。 Other aspects on which I would have loved to read his opinion unfortunately did not appear here - which is of course only a personal opinion from an European point of view。All in all pleasant memoirs of an influential politician, which are probably a great experience for fans of Obama and his politics! 。。。more

One principle for my life as a bahai is to stay far away from political parties as they cause division but removing this part of the book all the other 90% are just precious enjoyable insightfully and inspiring 。 It enlighten us with context to world events and to our current critical state of crisis as humanity and the type of leadership and values needed like demonstrated by this great humanbeing Obama ;)

3。5 stars。 This was a very well written book, but for me it was quite dense。 I’m not the smartest in the room when it comes to politics, so some of the sections really drug to get through。 Some of it was very quick and intriguing and gave good behind the scenes looks at how things happen in the White House。 I particularly sped through the last chApter on Osama bin Laden。 I think was I was expecting was a little less politics, a bit more of himself。 The book quickly got into the presidency and th 3。5 stars。 This was a very well written book, but for me it was quite dense。 I’m not the smartest in the room when it comes to politics, so some of the sections really drug to get through。 Some of it was very quick and intriguing and gave good behind the scenes looks at how things happen in the White House。 I particularly sped through the last chApter on Osama bin Laden。 I think was I was expecting was a little less politics, a bit more of himself。 The book quickly got into the presidency and then whiled down the minutiae。 Which is fine, but I was anticipating a bit more about his life before the White House, and a bit less policy。 If that’s your jam though, you’ll love it。 Regardless, it was interesting and eye opening。 I’m glad I took the opportunity to read。 。。。more

Long but good。 Listened to Audible version with Pres。 Obama reading it。 I highly recommend this!

Overall enjoyed the book- had a tough time getting through some slow/long spots。

To have him read it is perfection。 While very clinical (and way above my head on the inner workings of government and military) it is equally human and showcases his drive and intelligence。

I actually listened to Barack Obama read his book and I was captivated by the stories and how he shared his life and how he got into politics。 He reveals so much about his early life with Michelle, his marriage, his girls, and running for President。 This is a long book but well worth the time。 I bought the book and had read almost half when the audio version came available to borrow。

Can someone hire Obama an editor? that would help a lot。 the best parts of this memoir are when Obama ties together his family life and politics and how his family is personally impacted。 The worst parts? when he rambles on about world leaders who a) aren't in power anymore or B) not someone anyone needs to know about, i。e。 Rahul Gandhi in India。 the worst parts of this memoir are also when Obama waxes eloquent about the Global South and the US's role in global politics。 This sections border on Can someone hire Obama an editor? that would help a lot。 the best parts of this memoir are when Obama ties together his family life and politics and how his family is personally impacted。 The worst parts? when he rambles on about world leaders who a) aren't in power anymore or B) not someone anyone needs to know about, i。e。 Rahul Gandhi in India。 the worst parts of this memoir are also when Obama waxes eloquent about the Global South and the US's role in global politics。 This sections border on patronizing and an editor would have helped a TON。 anyway, 30 hours is far too long for any audiobook, no matter who wrote it。 。。。more

Did not disappoint, I’m looking forward to the second volume

Very long but couldn’t help but love it。 It took me a while but would still recommend it。

Inspiring and uplifting to hear such a lucid, intelligent leader explain his philosophy and describe his experiences。 I especially loved the personal reflections on family, work/life balance (he didn’t have one of course) and legacy。 Some of the details of the ins ands outs of things like Obamacare and TARP got a little tedious。 I enjoyed listening to the audiobook, but I had to check it out multiple times from the library so it took forever and I still didn’t make it through it all。 I’m glad he Inspiring and uplifting to hear such a lucid, intelligent leader explain his philosophy and describe his experiences。 I especially loved the personal reflections on family, work/life balance (he didn’t have one of course) and legacy。 Some of the details of the ins ands outs of things like Obamacare and TARP got a little tedious。 I enjoyed listening to the audiobook, but I had to check it out multiple times from the library so it took forever and I still didn’t make it through it all。 I’m glad he was our president。 。。。more

A 'must' for everyone。Either if you agree or disagree with his politics, the book offers an interesting insight about his philosophy。 That's the core。 Already waiting for the "second term"。PS。 It can easily be used to reflect with students (or friends) about politics, economics, social development, international relations, human rights, war studies。。。 A 'must' for everyone。Either if you agree or disagree with his politics, the book offers an interesting insight about his philosophy。 That's the core。 Already waiting for the "second term"。PS。 It can easily be used to reflect with students (or friends) about politics, economics, social development, international relations, human rights, war studies。。。 。。。more

finished! I’ll keep this short— unlike this memoir (28 hrs!!) It was very easy to listen to and I’m so glad I got the audiobook。 Sure, there were A LOT of details that I maybe glossed over but it was very educational & even a lil heartwarming。 I loved the family details!

Probably more like 2。5 stars。 I had high hopes for this。 I knew it would be long and detailed, at 29 hours。 I found most of the campaign and up through his election interesting。 Then parts of it just really dragged along - and i love history and politics。 The never-ending Summit where he described what felt like every single meeting he had for a week。 (This was so long, and ended with a transition to the Somali pirate standoff。 It had me thinking “Murdered by pirates is good!” à la Fred Savage i Probably more like 2。5 stars。 I had high hopes for this。 I knew it would be long and detailed, at 29 hours。 I found most of the campaign and up through his election interesting。 Then parts of it just really dragged along - and i love history and politics。 The never-ending Summit where he described what felt like every single meeting he had for a week。 (This was so long, and ended with a transition to the Somali pirate standoff。 It had me thinking “Murdered by pirates is good!” à la Fred Savage in The Princess Bride。 Sadly, the pirate standoff lasted about 10 minutes。) The intricate details of what and why to everything in Afghanistan。 The nitty gritty of so much military stuff。 There were later parts I found interesting - the Deepwater Horizon explosion (which I had honestly kind of forgotten about), and some of the broad strokes of the Arab Spring, for example。 Overall, it was long and unnecessarily detailed。 The story got too bogged down in minutia, too many times。I did the audiobook, and ended up listening to much of it at 1。2x speed trying to just get through it。 。。。more

A true class act。 Well written and very interesting to see the opinions of how events unfolded during the first half of his presidency。

I loved this first volume。 A very personal, historical, commentary written by the man who not only speaks well, but writes from the heart。 A Promised Land was informative, engaging, and told the story of President Obama's run for Senate and President covering his first term。 I can hardly wait for the second volume。 Read t slowly and enjoy the writing。 I loved this first volume。 A very personal, historical, commentary written by the man who not only speaks well, but writes from the heart。 A Promised Land was informative, engaging, and told the story of President Obama's run for Senate and President covering his first term。 I can hardly wait for the second volume。 Read t slowly and enjoy the writing。 。。。more

I didn’t find the first parts of this book, especially about campaigning, too exciting。 But all in all very informative read on the USA politics。 The core ideals described spoke to me closely。

An interesting and, at times, inspiring insight to the man and his office。 Seeing world events from the perspective of the White House and Obama himself was insightful。 Talk about a difficult job! I approached the read with a touch of skepticism having read that it was perhaps focused on promoting the Obama brand。 Actually I felt it was an honest and straight forward account told with intelligence and humility。 What a contrast to the appalling character who followed him in the White House!

Melissa

Loved the writing and especially the insights of daily life on the campaign trail and in the White House。 Audiobook is read by president Obama hence the 5 star rating。

Marctar

Everything I ever wanted to know about the pragmatics of day-to-day politics。

Obama is an astonishingly good writer。 I wondered how I would go with such a huge book, and about politics too。 I needn't have worried。 He is so eloquent and expressive that it was a totally gripping read and gave me such insights into the back stories of some of these political decisions that were so world changing。 I always appreciate Obama but even more now。 It's a great read and one which will give you a greater respect for him as a man and as a world leader。 Obama is an astonishingly good writer。 I wondered how I would go with such a huge book, and about politics too。 I needn't have worried。 He is so eloquent and expressive that it was a totally gripping read and gave me such insights into the back stories of some of these political decisions that were so world changing。 I always appreciate Obama but even more now。 It's a great read and one which will give you a greater respect for him as a man and as a world leader。 。。。more
