DNF @ 34% after finding out about the bullying, racism, and anti-semitism the author has subjected folks to。 Also, struggled so hard to make it through even a third of this book in ELEVEN DAYS。 What a waste。

Alas, I did not hate this book, looking at it objectively through lenses not colored by the author’s poor behavior。 More complete thoughts to come。

Kudos to the writer of this book。 You did an amazing job。 Why don't you try to join NovelStar's writing competition? You might win a prize, judging from the book I just read。tttttttttttt Kudos to the writer of this book。 You did an amazing job。 Why don't you try to join NovelStar's writing competition? Unfortunately, I had pre-ordered a special edition of this book and was well underway in my reading when I got found out about the issues with the author as brought to light on Twitter。 The magic was already gone from this series, I think it disappeared around the same time blood magic did from Travania。 This book was just genuinely unenjoyable even without the author issues。 The characters have become unlikable, and I found myself struggling to even finish。 Sad finish to a series I had enjoyed

An interesting ending to this story。After all the betrayal some how it all works out。 Two friends that were along for the ride turn out to be what they need to pull it all off。 The ones who die, die again and come back。 Theres alot of cannibalism, more eyes alot more eyes。 Some gods turn out not to be such dicks but overall they are。 Theres no real peace at the end but a step closer and maybe the crow has finally excepted that he is loved。

Blessed Monsters is the epic conclusion of the dark fantasy trilogy Something Dark and Holy by Emily A。 Duncan。 I have really love this serie and hope we get more in this world。Nadya, Serefin and Malachaisz where great characters and even tough Malachaisz was turning even more of a monsters then human, it turned out for the best in the end。 They were up againts dark gods and chaos, stuff that they were responsible for unleashing in to begin with , before its to late。Can't wait to read more from Blessed Monsters is the epic conclusion of the dark fantasy trilogy Something Dark and Holy by Emily A。 Duncan。 I have really love this serie and hope we get more in this world。Nadya, Serefin and Malachaisz where great characters and even tough Malachaisz was turning even more of a monsters then human, it turned out for the best in the end。 They were up againts dark gods and chaos, stuff that they were responsible for unleashing in to begin with , before its to late。Can't wait to read more from this author。 Love the cover of this book and the deckle edges of the book。 。。。more

Disclaimer: I am not on Twitter much, and only learned of the author’s alleged bullying of BiPoC authors and anti-Semitism by reading other reviews after I had purchased the book。 I managed to find Duncan’s Twitter apology, so it sounds like she indeed did something。 It always saddens me when authors of books I love turn out to be hateful people (looking at you, Rowling)。 But I did want to see how this trilogy ended, and see for myself if there was anti-Semitism in it。 Personally, nothing jumped Disclaimer: I am not on Twitter much, and only learned of the author’s alleged bullying of BiPoC authors and anti-Semitism by reading other reviews after I had purchased the book。 I managed to find Duncan’s Twitter apology, so it sounds like she indeed did something。 It always saddens me when authors of books I love turn out to be hateful people (looking at you, Rowling)。 But I did want to see how this trilogy ended, and see for myself if there was anti-Semitism in it。 Personally, nothing jumped out at me, but I fully admit that is because maybe I just wasn’t aware of it。 The trilogy has queer representation, so it surprised me to learn the author bullied other minorities, but I suppose being supportive of one group doesn’t mean you support them all。 Though these accusations were in the back of my mind as I read the book, I did enjoy the read itself。 I’m personally glad it had a (mostly) happy ending, with the couples getting to be together, and all the characters pulling through。 I adore Kacper and Serefin, and of course Mal and Nadya, twisted though they are。 I don’t like finishing a book feeling destroyed, so I can at least thank Duncan for letting the lovers be together。That said, not everything was wrapped up in a neat little bow。 War between countries was still a possibility, and there were (mortal) adversaries that hadn’t been dealt with。 I wanted to know more about how the afterlife worked, and the ending fight with the gods was rather anticlimactic, and rushed, everything being summed up in thoughts and dialogue, and suddenly they’re worried about more, well, mortal affairs。 It felt like Duncan was in a hurry to finish, and skimmed over something that could have been truly epic。 I was left wondering, “What happens now?”But overall, I enjoyed this trilogy。 I’m giving it a 4 for the story, even if the ending left a bit to be desired, and the author is apparently a bigoted bully。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Once again I want to point out the issues within this book being antisemitism and the author being racist。These books immediately became my comfort books as soon as I read them。 I absolutely adore all of the characters。 This had some turns I wasn’t expecting, but it worked out in the end and I was satisfied。

Yes I am。 Call it OCD or something but I can't leave something unfinished。 So I dreaded but finished this。 I won't say I didn't have any hope。 It was going pretty good for the first half but thn similar unnecessary events just like previous ones。 This writer just open a lid and forgets about them。 Doesn't bother to explain or solve or hardly mention again。 It was so frustrating。 At least Malachiasz and nadya's relationship seemed little healthy her Boyyy am I glad that this series finally ended? A solid DNF。 I can’t read this book without reflecting on the things this author has said and done not only on social media, but also the harmful rep that they have written within their books。 I’ve decided nothing is worth supporting an author that has acted so despicably。 Until they can prove they have learned from these mistakes and have sincerely apologized to the people hurt by their actions, this author will be on my no list。

3。5 To be very honest, this was probably my least favorite of the series, though I did of course still enjoy it。 It took me forever to get into, mostly because it took forever for the characters to all be together, and these books are the best when everyone is together。 So the first three hundred or so pages were rough, because it was a lot of really separate things that were hard to be invested in, but after the fun reunion stuff it was great! I enjoyed the previous Books : 4 **** for wicked saints, 5***** for ruthless gods and were eager to read the last one。 Quite quite disappointed。。。。 Too long, nothing really happenned for half the book。 Too confusing, it seems the author is lost in their own story。。。 The characters once great are dull, they do not act anymore, they are just subject to the events。。。。。except maybe serefin。the interludes were really boring and useless。 I did not enjoyed them in the previous Book but here with the co I enjoyed the previous Books : 4 **** for wicked saints, 5***** for ruthless gods and were eager to read the last one。 Quite quite disappointed。。。。 Too long, nothing really happenned for half the book。 Too confusing, it seems the author is lost in their own story。。。 The characters once great are dull, they do not act anymore, they are just subject to the events。。。。。except maybe serefin。the interludes were really boring and useless。 I did not enjoyed them in the previous Book but here with the confusing story they are too much and such waste of time。。。the editing is flawed, rushed and the general wording quite poor。 Too bad to end two previous great book that way。 2。5*** for blessed monsters 。。。more

I really enjoyed the conclusion to the Something Dark and Holy trilogy。 While I do think it was a tad repetitive and tied up so easily but I enjoyed the relationships progressions and the characters。 I also read this book before discovering that the author had said some problematic things and will not be purchasing any more of her books in the future。

As a well-educated adult, I'm not always the biggest fan of cancel culture。 Let me be clear: I am not saying this book shouldn't be "canceled" or that the author does not deserve every ounce of criticism that has come her way。 But for me, I find canceling media outright often leaves me without a clear understanding of why certain aspects are problematic。 I won't financially support this, but I do want to do my (personal) due diligence to become better informed and aware。 I started the Something As a well-educated adult, I'm not always the biggest fan of cancel culture。 Let me be clear: I a clear understanding of why certain aspects are problematic。 I won't financially support this, but I do want to do my (personal) due diligence to become better informed and aware。 I started the Something Dark and Holy series late -- around this time a year ago -- as I grabbed up any book on NetGalley that looked remotely interesting in the YA genre。 I didn't do my research, and in my time on Goodreads looking at the reviews cursorily, did not see anything amiss。 But when I went to wrap up the series with "Blessed Monsters", the criticism was all I was seeing!I will be the first to admit that I am not aware of all the myriad ways there are to discriminate, stereotype, and offend people。 I am constantly learning more, but honestly, this one shocked me, and made me realize how important it is to keep pushing myself to learn more。 I won't regale here in ideas that I am wholly unfamiliar with beyond whatever brief research I've done in the last few weeks -- there are plenty of blogs, YouTubers, and reviewers here that can provide a much more educated and personal explanation of why this book is so harmful。 But I will say that as an adult who COMPLETELY missed the antisemitism in the first two books, I am reflecting so much on this and other tropes in YA so much more now, some of which appear in this book too。 I'm glad I read this book because I was truly interested in diving deep into how far this antisemitism played out and see how Duncan chose to resolve it by the end。 Doing so allowed me to feel better informed about the issues and contextualize the controversy。 As she mentioned in her sorry-not-sorry on Twitter, she was aware of the antisemitism in the material she used as research for her book but thought she had handled it in a sensitive way。 While I could identify what she meant by "sensitive" by the end of this book, I didn't see it as a solution or a means to dismiss the stereotypes the book relied on for its character development, setting, and plot。 If you've made it this far into the review: thank you。 I'll move onto my thoughts on the actual writing。 My arbitrary Goodreads-star review will only reflect the following because I can't even begin to think about marrying the two into an overall total。Jumping into the first pages of this novel, I was quickly reminded of how complex this story had become。 I took PAGES of notes on the first two books, which I chalked up to being me transitioning to typing my book notes rather than handwriting them。 But nope。 I wish Duncan had included more "review" earlier in the book, as many authors do (to varying degrees of effectiveness)。 She sprinkled some in, of course, but it wasn't until about half way that I felt like I'd gotten enough information to remind me of big events from book 2。 There were some small details from the earlier books that were important to the plot of this that I had completely forgotten and felt frustrated about not being reminded of。I found the plot engaging, but this book felt far too long。 At over 500 pages (which was equivalent to about 8 hours of reading on my Kindle), it wasn't until about halfway that I felt the plot moving forward with intentionality。 The first half was spent roaming and ruminating on the past/future (oh, and being kidnapped, of course)。 The pacing may have been faster with fewer transitions to different POVs, which tended to take time to establish, develop, and resolve a scene that may not have been that meaningful to the story as a whole。 Here come some spoilers about the plot: (view spoiler)[My biggest gripe with the plot came at the end。 In a book that is consumed by ashes, blood, death, and eyeballs, NO ONE DIED。 Not a soul (unless you count the gods)。 All of our protagonists lived for their happily ever after。 Awesome for Kacper & Serefin, but unrealistic all the same。 And the climactic scene was such a let down。 It'd be like the final battle scene in an Avengers movie where right as shit gets real, the camera cuts to black and we wake up in a hospital room 3 weeks later。 The whole "redemption" bit I discussed up top seemed to be unrealistic as Malachiasz is completely fine, now with a third (?) chance at life and a happily ever after with Nadya。 More on that later。 (hide spoiler)]Duncan's writing shines when she writes dialogue for her characters。 I appreciate her talent at writing comedy in a tragic novel like this。 But oof, we gotta review comma splices。 I'm all for breaking grammar rules in fiction/creative writing (see fragments and other syntactical choices), but there were so many that read unintentional and distracting for this English-teacher reader。 And lastly, the real reason I read through this series: the relationships between characters。 I'll read a book that's been steaming in a hot pile of trash if it means I can see how relationship arcs resolve, and since everyone gets paired up in this one, I was most looking forward to that。 I was here for all of the Kacper & Serefin scenes, which is one of the only healthy relationships in the book。 But I felt even more uncomfortable with the relationship between Nadya and Malachiasz in this book。 I can disassociate with this kind of message (as I am an old YA reader), but I worry about teens reading this relationship between the two most important protagonists in this series and thinking this is an okay way to behave。 I get it -- it's fantasy; it's not real; they're monsters -- but do all teens see it that way? Not a chance。 Nadya is much more independent and strong in this book, but the abusive relationship that has been growing since book one continues here。 Another harmful trope in YA。Final verdict: the overall plot line through the series was excellent (I'm talking about the larger plot of the gods doing their evil things and how that all resolves, not the incredibly controversial plot line of Malachiasz and his obsession with power/blood)。 The execution could have been stronger, the relationships could have been less problematic, and the whole book could have been way less racist。 I'm not going to review anymore of Duncan's work for the time being。 I'm all for giving people the opportunity to learn and grow, so we'll see what happens in the future。 But for now, I'll stick to support authors who are invested in adding positively to the world rather than perpetuating negativity。 。。。more

My toxic trait is that I once I start reading a series, I have to see it through to the end—no matter how garbage it is。 Not only is Emily Duncan a shitty person (see Twitter callout), but this book series was just plain bad。Reading Blessed Monsters felt like getting my teeth scraped at the dentist, or sitting at the DMV。 The best part of this book was knowing that when I turned the last page, it would finally be over。 I’m free now。 Thank fucking god。
