Summary

For the first time ever, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate His Holiness the Dalai Lama addresses children directly, sharing lessons of peace and compassion, told through stories of his own childhood。

One of today's most inspiring world leaders was once an ordinary child named Lhamo Thondup。 In a small village in Tibet, his mother was his first great teacher of compassion。 In everyday moments from his childhood, young readers begin to see that important lessons are all around us, and they, too, can grow to truly understand them。

With simple, powerful text, the Dalai Lama shares the universalist teachings of treating one another with compassion, which Bao Luu illustrates beautifully in vibrant colour。 In an increasingly confusing world, The Seed of Compassion offers guidance and encouragement on how we all might bring more kindness to our world。

3。5 stars -- The Dalai Lama is an inspiration to many, so it's not surprising he would get the picture book biography treatment。 I very much appreciated the message at the book's heart about compassion。 I especially liked the statement that even if we mess up and don't behave compassionately one day, we can learn from this and choose kindness the next。 This can apply to so many aspects of our lives and it's wisdom to hang on to。 3。5 stars -- The Dalai Lama is an inspiration to many, so it's not surprising he would get the picture book biography treatment。 I very much appreciated the message at the book's heart about compassion。 I especially liked the statement that even if we mess up and don't behave compassionately one day, we can learn from this and choose kindness the next。 This can apply to so many aspects of our lives and it's wisdom to hang on to。 。。。more

Summary: This book is about Dalai Lama XIV。 It follows his life while giving some advice about compassion。 Analysis: This was a good book。 I think it might confuse people some kids and it would require some background context。 How I would use this book: I would use this book to talk about compassion in my classroom。 I would talk about planting seeds of compassion along with other characteristics that can bloom into something beautiful。

I have read several books of the Dalai Lama and he has spoken about losing his homeland and the pain that caused him, but I haven’t heard him speak to his childhood and how he became the Dalai Lama。 I learned something here。 He grew up as a normal kid with a compassionate mother and his father was a farmer。 He was like any child。 This is a great intro into his life and life’s work of compassion。 We see that he learned compassion by watching his mother。 He fought with his brothers like any boy。 I I have read several books of the Dalai Lama and he has spoken about losing his homeland and the pain that caused him, but I haven’t heard him speak to his childhood and how he became the Dalai Lama。 I learned something here。 He grew up as a normal kid with a compassionate mother and his father was a farmer。 He was like any child。 This is a great intro into his life and life’s work of compassion。 We see that he learned compassion by watching his mother。 He fought with his brothers like any boy。 I would love to read more about this time in his life back in the 1930s。 He was found to be the 14th Dalai Lama at age 3。 The artwork is lovely and it conveys the simple life of his people and the joy that one feels around the Dalai Lama。 This is a wonderful biography to read about a great man。 。。。more

An elementary level picture book autobiography of the Dalai Lama the spiritual and political leader of Tibet and his philosophy on compassion and kindness。 Nice lessons for kids at end and explanations of the Dalai Lama sacrifices。

This is a biography of Dalai lama once who was an ordinary child who shows compassion and kindness towards others。 His journey to spread compassion and humanity towards human beings started in a small village called Takster, in the Amdo province of northeastern Tibet。 When he was small, he helped his mother with her day-to-day activities。 He helped his mother by collecting eggs from hens。 He was always serious about the work he does。 He planted barley, buckwheat, and potatoes with his mother。 Mo This is a biography of Dalai lama once who was an ordinary child who shows compassion and kindness towards others。 His journey to spread compassion and humanity towards human beings started in a small village called Takster, in the Amdo province of northeastern Tibet。 When he was small, he helped his mother with her day-to-day activities。 He helped his mother by collecting eggs from hens。 He was always serious about the work he does。 He planted barley, buckwheat, and potatoes with his mother。 Most importantly, his mother seeded compassion towards others and raised him on a diet of love。 His first lesson of being compassionate towards others was given by his mother。 His mother’s love and caring towards other people when in difficult situations rooted within him。 He witnessed the most important lesson of compassion and the importance of treating others with kindness。 It was inspiring that he was chosen to be a Dalai Lama at the age of three。 However, he had his moment of separating his loved ones especially his mother and brother to complete his journey。 I like how he explains about children。 He explains that children are like sprouts and they contain potential that can be nourished。 He says “the seed of compassion is within every child。 I also like how he compares human’s ability to animal nature and only humans are capable of training our mind。 I like how we can train our minds to show kindness even to someone who treated us badly。 Instead of treating the person negatively, he explains to think “what I might do to help them?” which I think is a lifelong lesson to live in our society。 I highly recommend this book for kindergarten-grade 3 readers。 This will help students understand how they can act of love towards others in the classroom。 It will also help students to change their behaviors towards the people around them who may not treat them well。 In the classroom, this is a great book to start a conversation about how they need to treat each other。 Students can think about how they can change their life towards others。 Also, a small classroom activity with love and caring can be incorporated。 Additionally, this can be a small lesson to think about the ways children can make the world a better place。 I would recommend this book in the lower elementary classroom。 。。。more

An amazing way to explain compassion to students。 The laced undertones of lots of reading and learning about cultures was important。 I feel the quote at the back was the sticking point to being a solid book。 When someone disagrees with you, rather than think they are mistaken, you must ask, "Why might they feel this way?" This has a lot of truth and philosophy and good vibes。 I'd share with grades 3-5, maybe older? The actual writing is a bit awkward and would require more explanation for most American children。 However, this could be a good match for the many schools and families working on mindfulness with their children。 This has a lot of truth and philosophy and good vibes。 I'd share with grades 3-5, maybe older?

It feels almost wrong to give a relatively low rating to a book by His Holiness the Dalai Lama! I was interested to hear from the Dalai Lama himself about where and how he grew up, about his mother, about how he was recognized by monks as "the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama" at age 2。 The focus of his studies and his life then became to help make the world a more compassionate place。 I was intrigued by all of this but would have loved more--what were his parents' reactions to him being chosen? What was it like to study as a monk? What are some of the compassionate deeds he has done and seen others done? How does one nurture the compassionate seed that he says is in each child? Hard to fit it all in a picture book, I guess, but it left me wanting more and feeling like this was not really a book that would be memorable or engaging for children, but one that adults could use with children as an introduction to a famous person or to the concept of compassion (although again, one would have to look beyond to find concrete examples)。 。。。more

What was His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama's childhood like? Who was he before he was recognized at the reincarnation of his predecessor? What does the seeds of compassion mean? This is a lovely story! I felt it was all too generalized although I liked that he made the point that his mother sowed the seeds of compassion in him。 More specific examples of acts of compassion would have made a bigger impact。 I admire the Dalai Lama, but I think the viewpoint shows clearly that he's lived a very different life than those of us who struggle on a more mundane plane。 I felt it was all too generalized although I liked that he made the point that his mother sowed the seeds of compassion in him。 More specific examples of acts of compassion would have made a bigger impact。 I admire the Dalai Lama, but I think the viewpoint shows clearly that he's lived a very different life than those of us who struggle on a more mundane plane。 。。。more

It could only ever be five stars。 But also, well earned with a skillful understanding of how children hear, understand, and learn。 Grateful for this book。

I love (and hope to be) the mother at the beginning of this story。 His Holiness the Dalai Lama tells the story of his upbringing, and the latter half of the book is dedicated to preaching his mission of compassion to children。 The picture book suits an older audience of children, kindergarten+ The book includes a timeline of the 14th Dalia Lama's life。 The digital art style of Bao Luu is calming, soft and colorful。 I love (and hope to be) the mother at the beginning of this story。 His Holiness the Dalai Lama tells the story of his upbringing, and the latter half of the book is dedicated to preaching his mission of compassion to children。 The picture book suits an older audience of children, kindergarten+ The book includes a timeline of the 14th Dalia Lama's life。 The digital art style of Bao Luu is calming, soft and colorful。 。。。more

Wait, this is actually written by the Dalai Lama? Not just distilled from other writings? Wow。Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso tells a little bit about his childhood and how his mother influenced his belief in compassion。 There are a couple unrelated anecdotes which I'm guessing are to make him seem more human and approachable? Then he talks about his belief in compassion, while the illustrations show him talking to crowds。The small font tells me that this is not intended for children to read themselves Wait, this is actually written by the Dalai Lama?
