I don't know how to feel about this book。 It has some great information but did not motivate me to try the starch diet。 One minute I found myself agreeing with the science discussed and the next I felt like things were taken a bit to far。 I am glad I read it and enjoyed the listen but also felt a bit bugged by some specific ways things were brought up like how in the intro it is stated "whatever you are doing now is not working that is why you picked up this book。" Really? This book makes sense。

Simple

The majority of compliant foods on the Starch Solution are complex carbohydrates that are high in starch and fiber such as potatoes, grains, and legumes。The Starch Solution diet consists of approximately 70% starch, 20% vegetables, and 10% fruits。

I don't think I really liked the way this book was written。 I should preface this by saying I've read many other books on plant-based nutrition including Fiber-Fueled, How Not to Die, and How Not to Diet。 I feel all of these books were better written because they presented the evidence better and had more nuance。 I also did not like the section on Vitamin D。 He keeps saying just go out in the sun or even use a tanning bed but no mention of sunscreen at all! This is a good book for someone starting out on a plant-based diet, who wants to lose weight and learn something about mostly the American healthcare system。 There was a lot of meta-information about that in the first half, which I've read in most books of this kind already。 That's okay, if it's your first one, this will be eye-opening。 There was also a lot of the author's life story, which is not necessarily relevant。Did not like the author branding people thin and beautiful or "Star McDouglers This is a good book for someone starting out on a plant-based diet, who wants to lose weight and learn something about mostly the American healthcare system。 There was a lot of meta-information about that in the first half, which I've read in most books of this kind already。 That's okay, if it's your first one, this will be eye-opening。 There was also a lot of the author's life story, which is not necessarily relevant。Did not like the author branding people thin and beautiful or "Star McDouglers", nor talking about his products。 The information that an informed plant-based person can derive here is: on vitamins and supplements and on using starches as the star of your meal - a lot, but maybe not enough to read such a long book for。 Again, good for beginners (especially Americans)。 。。。more

This book helped me get over my phobia of eating a high carbohydrate diet, and by incorporating the guidelines into my way of eating, I lost 43 pounds during the COVID-19 lockdown。 Even without exercising, the weight came off effortlessly。 I will eat this way the rest of my life。 I still eats a small amount of animal meat on rare occasions, but I don't plan meals around meat anymore。 I feel really healthy and energetic and sleep like a baby every night! Dr。 M。 makes a lot of sense in a straightforward way。 I have been living The Starch Solution for only 3 weeks。 I have lost 11 lbs and I’m not hungry。 I do find many of the recipes in the book have too many ingredients so I get many recipes from YouTube。 For those who say it’s too restrictive or unattainable, how does this sound? I'm glad I've read this as so many people have referred to it。 I think it's a nice premise but I don't like the science and think it has been cherry picked (I。e。 saying protein is not important) - not great if you're not planning on going vegan (maybe it should be called the Vegan Starch Solution) - the best thing about this book for me has to be the recipes which surprisingly sound really good! 3。5 stars - Everything McDougall says is right in line with Michael Pollan and Colin Campbell。 I loved all the facts and it was truly inspiring。 HOWEVER, I felt like he was trying to sell the reader on his diet plan and detox resort。 It felt like he was trying to monetize off nature and if I hadn’t read The China Study, Omnivores Dilemma, Whole, etc before this I would have stopped listening to this book。 If you’re able to look past all the testimonials about “his plan” then it’s a wonderful boo 3。5 stars - Everything McDougall says is right in line with Michael Pollan and Colin Campbell。 I loved all the facts and it was truly inspiring。 HOWEVER, I felt like he was trying to sell the reader on his diet plan and detox resort。 It felt like he was trying to monetize off nature and if I hadn’t read The China Study, Omnivores Dilemma, Whole, etc before this I would have stopped listening to this book。 If you’re able to look past all the testimonials about “his plan” then it’s a wonderful book。 。。。more

This book was so insightful。 When I started my journey of no meat over 3 years ago it was because I watched a documentary called “What the Health” this had the same eye opening effect on me but with different information。 This gave me more information on everything regarding nutritions。 I have been eating like this for two days now and can say that I do not feel hungry or like I am restricting at all。

Loved this book! Dr。 McDougall did a wonderful job of addressing common misconceptions regarding health and diet。 Starches are what our bodies thrive on。 It's so sad how many actually try to avoid carbs。 This is a must read for everyone!! Especially anyone struggling with health issues。 I strongly believe a plant based, starched filled diet will help heal almost anything。 Loved this book! I'm a fan of the recipes included in this book, and most of the information had me nodding my head as I read。 However, there were a couple things that irked me。 I wish Dr McDougall had pointed out that processed soy protein isolate is super unhealthy earlier on in the book。 And the worst part; he claimed that tanning beds are actually fine if used "properly" and it's young women who tend to overuse them while smoking too many cigarettes。 I hope I don't need to point out how sexist and plain wron I'm a fan of the recipes included in this book, and most of the information had me nodding my head as I read。 However, there were a couple things that irked me。 I wish Dr McDougall had pointed out that processed soy protein isolate is super unhealthy earlier on in the book。 And the worst part; he claimed that tanning beds are actually fine if used "properly" and it's young women who tend to overuse them while smoking too many cigarettes。 I hope I don't need to point out how sexist and plain wrong this is。 The rest of medical science concurs that tanning beds are extremely dangerous。 The author even claimed they can "cure" melanoma? I think he meant "cause"。 Otherwise, pretty informative read。 Highly recommend the harvest vegetable soup recipe。 Definitely a read to recommend to people who love rice, bread and beans。 。。。more

I thought I respected this vegan doctor, but was not expecting this level of fat shaming。 Since being obsessed with my weight since the age of 9, I’ve finally managed to mostly stop caring about what others (and particularly old, white men) think about my appearance。 But this? I was not expecting things like “where have all the beautiful people gone?” Oops, I think you meant skinny, because I’m beautiful at any size, honey。 Also, no one will want to love and marry me if I’m not skinny? Leave it。 I hope the next generation of vegan doctors does better。 。。。more
