Summary

Ice is in her blood。

Eighteen-year-old Waterrunner Eira Landan lives her life in the shadows — the shadow of her older brother, of her magic’s whispers, and of the person she accidentally killed。 She’s the most unwanted apprentice in the Tower of Sorcerers until the day she decides to step out and compete for a spot in the Tournament of Five Kingdoms。

Pitted against the best sorcerers in the Empire, Eira fights to be one of four champions。 Excelling in the trials has its rewards。 She's invited to the royal court with the “Prince of the Tower,” discovers her rare talent for forbidden magic, and at midnight, Eira meets with a handsome elfin ambassador。

But, Eira soon learns, no reward is without risk。 As she comes into the spotlight, so too do the skeletons of a past she hadn't even realized was haunting her。

Eira went into the trials ready for a fight。 Ready to win。 She wasn't ready for what it would cost her。 No one expected the candidates might not make it out with their lives。

This is the first book in a young adult, epic fantasy that's a tale of competition, coming of age, distant lands, elemental magic, and romance。 It's perfect for fans of the Legend of Korra, Truthwitch, and A Sorcery of Thorns。

I started this book feeling indifferent。 Part-way through the book, I realised this could be a 5 star。 I kept reading and kept loving it - the characters, the world and the possible romance。 And then we reached the end - the big reveal - and it was a little too Saturday morning cartoon for me。 I knew things were too good to be true with a certain character but I was holding out for hope that the character was either super suspicious just to throw us off the true villain or that okay maybe they a I started this book feeling indifferent。 Part-way through the book, I realised this could be a 5 star。 I kept reading and kept loving it - the characters, the world and the possible romance。 And then we reached the end - the big reveal - and it was a little too Saturday morning cartoon for me。 I knew things were too good to be true with a certain character but I was holding out for hope that the character was either super suspicious just to throw us off the true villain or that okay maybe they are bad but they have a good reason and our main character might actually turn to the dark side with them。 I’ve never read Elise Kona before so maybe this is just her style。 I was totally here for the romance and was actually rooting for our main character to pursue both potential love interests。 I was shocked to think this book - the first in its series - might not actually have the characters proclaim their love for each other。 And it essentially didn’t。 I am so here for a slow burn, even if a certain character has been most definitely been ruled out and we know which characters will probably end up with each other。Either way I really did enjoy this book and will definitely be continuing on with the series。 。。。more

I've seen several books take this approach where, the books take place in the same universe and sometimes, reference events in other books, but are not designed, or at least do not require being read in a certain order。 I think this is a lovely approach。 It allows readers to have different experiences without the pressure of making sure you didn't accidentally read one book out of turn and spoil the lot of it。 I found A Trial of Sorcerers to be a fun and engaging story that I enjoyed getting los I've seen several books take this approach where, the books take place in the same universe and sometimes, reference events in other books, but are not designed, or at least do not require being read in a certain order。 I think this is a lovely approach。 It allows readers to have different experiences without the pressure of making sure you didn't accidentally read one book out of turn and spoil the lot of it。 I found A Trial of Sorcerers to be a fun and engaging story that I enjoyed getting lost in。 That's one of the best things a story can do。 Well told, great characters, and most importantly, fun。 There are lots of things you can from a book。 While this doesn't top an all time favorites chart in any category, it does provide a wonderful story and lots of entertainment。 。。。more

So。 I really love this world, as it is the same world of Air awakens, and it made me so happy to come back to familiar shores。 Athough I haven't forgotten all the grief those books caused me, I was still enthusiastic to hear my book friends。 So, thruth be told, I should have seen it coming (view spoiler)[ as much as I love the author, she really loves killing off siblings。 Like what the hell did those brothers do wrong? It was quite a useless death of an important role model and character。 (hid So。 I really love this world, as it is the same world of Air awakens, and it made me so happy to come back to familiar shores。 Athough I haven't forgotten all the grief those books caused me, I was still enthusiastic to hear my book friends。 So, thruth be told, I should have seen it coming (view spoiler)[ as much as I love the author, she really loves killing off siblings。 Like what the hell did those brothers do wrong? Elise Kova has a beautiful writing style and is able to create wonderful complex new worlds that don't feel like it when you first start reading about them。I discovered her with "A deal with the elf king" which I really enjoyed and now I'm here with this book。I wanted to read something that easy, that flowed quickly but that was engaging and interesting at the same time。 While I thought that this was a standalone and that effected by decision in reading it, I still got what I wanted out of this Elise Kova has a beautiful writing style and is able to create wonderful complex new worlds that don't feel like it when you first start reading about them。I discovered her with "A deal with the elf king" which I really enjoyed and now I'm here with this book。I wanted to read something that easy, that flowed quickly but that was engaging and interesting at the same time。 While I thought that this was a standalone and that effected by decision in reading it, I still got what I wanted out of this book。The Tower with all its secrets bubbled with life and the power of the sorcerers that inhabit it。 I love the elemental powers, reminded me a bit of the grishaverse but the more I read about Waterrunners, Firebearer, Groundbreakers and Windlors the more clear it became to me that their powers worked nothing like the Grisha's。Now, let's talk about our main character: Eira Landan。 It's no secret that YA fantasy protagonists are often a pain in the neck and generally disliked for a variaty of reasons。 I understand that in this book, there was an attempt to reverse the stereotypical YA protagonist into its opposite。Where they usually are presented as having nothing special but at the same time being desired by everone and holding a huge amount of power, Eira is confident about herself, her abilities and what she wants。Sure, it takes a while for her to find her own voice, being always smothered and held back by her family she is able to find the strength to reach out and take what she wants in the support of her best friend, Alyss。And what does she want? Going to Meru。Meru is a overseas land where elfins live。 Eira is unfamously fascinated with the country, its history, its people, their magic。 So when the news of the Five Kingdom Tournament brokes, she cannot wait but to compete。 Her love for Meru it's exactly what aids her in the trials。 But it's also what makes her a target。And here we come to the part I did not like。 If there is so much emphasis about Eira's strength and how she's resilient and capable of taking care of herself, then I wouldn't expect her to fall in such a obvious trap。I mean, I understand why she did, but at the same time it was pretty clear from the beginning that the interest wasn't genuine。 I know it is supposed to be the plot twist but really, you see it coming almost immediately。Let's talk about the other characters shall we?Alyss? The typical token bff。 She didn't really have a storyline beside the fact that she's quirky and funny and Eira's best friend and that she wants to go to Meru with her。Cullen? He's supposed to be the enemies to lovers interest but he's not really。 The tention he has with Eira is merely the result of his nomea and for his input in what is one of Eira worst night ever。 But since it's pretty clear that he's playing a role, the mask come off fairly quickly and the two connect。 I won't say that I'm not intrigued in his storyline cause it sounds like it has the potential to be interesting but for now, I don't care much about him。Marcus? His relationship to Eira and their bond, the way he cares about her was what made me like him so much。 It's genuine, he really cares about his sister。 And siblings love is wonderful and it was nice to see it represented。In general, Eira's family relationships and dynamics I really enjoyed。 Despite what Eira thinks of them, familial love it's also wonderful and precious and not that easy to come by。 It's also rare to see it represented in a fantasy where usually it's all about the hero/heroine and their found families。 Idk it was nice to see her interact with her uncles and aunt and see how much they loved her。The subplot about Adela? Mh, idk, sounds like maybe it was too much。 I mean, a lot happened: Eira's journey in figuring out her magic, her finding her strength and her place in the tower, Ferro and Meru then Denaya and now this? Mh。I mean, it's only the first book so maybe everything will be explained and developed in the following ones but for now I'm sceptical。I know I am a sucker for character development and growth so I'm here for it and ready to change my mind if that happens in the next books。I'm really curious to see where Eira's adventure will take her。 。。。more

I will forever be a sucker for Elise Kovas writing!! I loved this just as I’ve loved all of her other books but I do think readers would benefit from reading the Air Awakens series before starting this! It is not necessarily a must, but this book refers to the history of the world and Magic a lot, history that happens in the Air Awakens series。 So while you don’t HAVE to read those first I think it would help readers to more fully understand the world and magic and all that!!

I enjoyed this book, but I recommend it with some hesitancy。 The is a lot of emotional drama, so if you are not into that this is so not your book。 I did enjoy the overall plot though the end is a bit of a cliff hanger。 I would say that it is a fairly clean book, with the farthest it goes being intense kissing。

5 StarsAnd again。。。Ms Kova writes a fantastic story still following the same world but a generation later。 This book is about Eira who is a water runner and a total social outcast。 I was a bit skeptical at first because I stopped reading the Vortex Chronicles but with this new series, I've totally become invested again。 5 StarsAnd again。。。Ms Kova writes a fantastic story still following the same world but a generation later。 This book is about Eira who is a water runner and a total social outcast。 I was a bit skeptical at first because I stopped reading the Vortex Chronicles but with this new series, I've totally become invested again。 。。。more

HEHE! Ok so yes I have read the Air Awakens series, no I have not read the next three series。 This is the second series of Elise Kova's that I am reading。 I am really excited to read this book and jump back into the adventures of Solaris。 Hehe。 SPOILER WARNING!UNCLE FRITZ AND UNCLE GRAHM IM DYING! fritz is the minister of Sorcery ofc。 I never really thought Fritz of all people would try to hide someone from their true potential。 Honestly self pity is kind of exhausting at this point。 This book h HEHE! I do not trust the ambassador。 Wait a minute are we seeing a good part of Cullen。 I don't know what to do, is Cullen bad or good??CULLEN HE BE KISSEN OUR GIRL! I know it was only a distraction but boy。 Adam seems to be more infuriating every time I hear something about him。 Something about Ferro just doesn't sit right with me。 PLOT TWIST ABOUT HER PAST。 This is getting good。 I love the relationship between her and Alyss。 It is so pure and genuine and Alyss helps her to not be afraid and just live。 NO NOT A LOVE TRIANGLE! I WONT BE ABLE TO CHOOSE! The thing she did with the crown was amazing。 Absolutely amazing。 The triangle is officially over。 I hope。 I KNEW IT! ALSO THESE PLOT TWISTS ARE SO GOOD。 I GIVE THIS BOOK A 4。5。 Let me explain, I love the character development but I didn't really get it。 The whole thing between Ferro and Eira was questionable。 Why did he kiss her only to betray her? So many questions and that's what makes a good book。 Also the self pity and being in her brother's shadow。 I can't wait for the next book。 。。。more

This was a nice, quick read。 The scope of the story and the world feels quite small right now, and there are a lot of things that need further elaboration, but I suppose that will come in future installments。 I don’t know if I’ll read said installments, but at the very least, I don’t regret reading this one。And I may or may not have a mild crush on Deneya。 Just a little。
