Summary

H。P。 Lovecraft remade the horror genre in the early twentieth century, discarding ghosts and witches and instead envisaging mankind at the mercy of a chaotic and malevolent universe。

This selection of stories ranges from early tales of nightmares and insanity such as 'The Outsider' and 'The Rats in the Walls', through the grotesquely comic 'Herbert West – Reanimator' and 'The Hound', to the extra-terrestrial terror of 'The Call of Cthulhu', which fuses traditional supernaturalism with science fiction。 Including the definitive corrected texts, this collection reveals the development of Lovecraft's mesmerizing narrative style and establishes him as a hugely influential – and visionary – American writer。

I only read “The Call of Cthulhu”, “The Dunwich Horror”, and “The Shadow Over Innsmouth”。

If you’re a fan of cosmic horror, this is the birthplace of it。 Though Cthulhu has been turned into somewhat of a meme in today’s culture, I still found Lovecraft’s storytelling very compelling。 If you have ever looked up into the sky in wonderment of “what could be out there?” or are “we alone?”, be prepared for Lovecraft to provide a very dark and unsettling answer。 An answer that tickles at the most primal and base fear of all people, “the fear of unknowing”。 The critique of anthropocentric i If you’re a fan of cosmic horror, this is the birthplace of it。 Though Cthulhu has been turned into somewhat of a meme in today’s culture, I still found Lovecraft’s storytelling very compelling。 If you have ever looked up into the sky in wonderment of “what could be out there?” or are “we alone?”, be prepared for Lovecraft to provide a very dark and unsettling answer。 An answer that tickles at the most primal and base fear of all people, “the fear of unknowing”。 The critique of anthropocentric ideology is done masterfully in the descriptions of cities and creatures that bear no resemblance to what we understand to be cities or creatures。 What does it mean to see something that is so alien, (literally), that even with all the marvels of human intelligence fail to comprehend and merely contributing any kind of effort into understanding it drives you mad? To spur some ideas, the artwork and creature design of the Japanese game, “Bloodborne”, borrows heavily from the genre and as a fan I think it does the best job of representing this concept。 Lastly it feels wrong not to make a mention that some points about worldview and political stances of HP throughout his life were morally and ethically wrong。 He was a troubled individual that at the very least would have benefitted from a few therapy sessions。 That said, I am a staunch supporter of his literary works as they pertain to cosmic horror。 Amazing movies such as, “Alien”, “the void”, “event horizon”, “color out of space”, (obviously and yes the Nicholas Cage one lol), “IT”, and many more are all prime examples of how deep and rich this genre can be and I’m extremely appreciative Lovecrafts creation of it。 。。。more

Whether it is Stephen king, Indiana Jones, Alien, it all starts and borrows from Lovecraft。

H。P。 Lovecraft has a way of writing that can entirely engulf you within a story, or can just completely lose you within the first sentence。 But I really enjoy some of the stories he has made, I think that they are interesting and they genuinely spark fear in me。 I think this is the kinda book that I would never read in the dark or at night since it would probably cause me to have night terrors。 As well as the insanely expansive universe he is creating with every story is very interesting and I t H。P。 Lovecraft has a way of writing that can entirely engulf you within a story, or can just completely lose you within the first sentence。 But I really enjoy some of the stories he has made, I think that they are interesting and they genuinely spark fear in me。 I think this is the kinda book that I would never read in the dark or at night since it would probably cause me to have night terrors。 As well as the insanely expansive universe he is creating with every story is very interesting and I think that he does well to show how he thinks what the genuinely unknown can be。 。。。more

I read most of these stories for the first time in my early 20s。 The second reading in my 30s was no less fascinating, but definitely less scary。 I love that he repeats characters and places in most stories so that it feels rather like an anthology in one creepy town instead of separate and unconnected tales。

I think that it would have been exciting if it was put in images, but written down, I was very bored。 The plotline was interesting, but it dropped me after hooking me in。

I get the feeling that Lovecraft was paid by the word for these。

Some good stuff。 Some of the stories are weak and took some effort to get through but others were strong and pulled me in。 Was taken aback by the casual racism but I suppose that's a sign of the times。。。still always difficult to reconcile in my mind。 Some good stuff。 Some of the stories are weak and took some effort to get through but others were strong and pulled me in。 Was taken aback by the casual racism but I suppose that's a sign of the times。。。still always difficult to reconcile in my mind。 。。。more

This is my first Lovecraft book and I can see why people laude his work so much。 Many have said it's the mythos that attract them, but realize he wasn't a great writer。 I tend to disagree。 I think he was a great writer。 He had a rich vocabulary, a vast imagination, and unique flair for storytelling that put you right in the story。 One of my favorite things about his work is that the landscape becomes a character, and though he goes into great detail, it becomes important because the atmosphere a This is my first Lovecraft book and I can see why people laude his work so much。 Many have said it's the mythos that attract them, but realize he wasn't a great writer。 I tend to disagree。 I think he was a great writer。 He had a rich vocabulary, a vast imagination, and unique flair for storytelling that put you right in the story。 One of my favorite things about his work is that the landscape becomes a character, and though he goes into great detail, it becomes important because the atmosphere and surroundings are all part of the tale。 Another thing I like is that he didn't waste words。 He didn't spend a lot of time on excess character development。 The plot defined the character, and that's how I like it。 I don't like halts in momentum just to describe a character or give some needless backstory。 Stuff like that needs to snap quickly and concisely。 Lovecraft mastered the art of character development in my view because he was able to do it without stopping the plot。My favorites from the book are "The Hound", "Cool Air", "The Whisperer in Darkness", "The Haunter in the Dark", "The Outsider", and "The Festival。" For the most part, I liked "The Colour Out of Space", "The Rats in the Wall", and "The Shadow Over Innsmouth", but they dragged a bit in parts。 "The Shadow Over Innsmouth" was especially difficult when the ticket master and Zadok Allen were speaking。 One thing Lovecraft does that I don't care for is write how the dialect sounds。 Some people like that and it's a minor issue。 Overall, I really enjoyed this book。I went into this collection having heard so much about Lovecraft, but I didn't believe the hype。 However, I now see why people get so excited about his work。 He truly was a pioneer of the horror genre and is the giant on whose shoulders many horror writers stand。 。。。more

This was my first foray into Lovecraft, and given his well-known stature as a horror writer, I did not quite know what to expect。 I was spellbound almost instantly。 Lovecraft certainly had a way with words, using language that I would describe as florid and evocative。 He manages to be both very much of his age, but also simultaneously achieving a quality of timelessness。 I think that is because he delves into the primal fears of mankind, the unknown depths of evil, that once they have been disco This was my first foray into Lovecraft, and given his well-known stature as a horror writer, I did not quite know what to expect。 I was spellbound almost instantly。 Lovecraft certainly had a way with words, using language that I would describe as florid and evocative。 He manages to be both very much of his age, but also simultaneously achieving a quality of timelessness。 I think that is because he delves into the primal fears of mankind, the unknown depths of evil, that once they have been discovered, cannot be unseen。 There is no escape。 I also appreciated the creativity of his monster, Cthulhu。 In western cultures, we are familiar with the goat-like features of demonic figures, but the elements of aquatic creatures is new to me。 And considering how terrifying the seeming bottomless abyss that our oceans contain, this is an excellent source for unspeakable horror。 Lovecraft reveals just enough to allow his readers to enter the world he is building, but leaves it vague enough to fill with your own personal horrors conjured up by your imagination。 The effectiveness of the story was enhanced by an excellent narrator of the audiobook, William Roberts。 Would highly recommend, especially for first time Lovecraft readers。 。。。more

I love the Cthulhu mythos but I will say that I find Lovecraft's writing very dense at times and often hard to follow so having a graphic novel of 2 of his stories is very welcomed。 I also love visual representations of the creatures from the mythos especially given that the original descriptions tend to be sparse and try to evoke emotion more than being incredibly detailed。 Would love to see more of this。 I love the Cthulhu mythos but I will say that I find Lovecraft's writing very dense at times and often hard to follow so having a graphic novel of 2 of his stories is very welcomed。 I also love visual representations of the creatures from the mythos especially given that the original descriptions tend to be sparse and try to evoke emotion more than being incredibly detailed。 Would love to see more of this。 。。。more

All of the best stories in this collection are in the second half (although I did like the first one - 'Dagon', which was short and sharp)。 'The Colour Out of Space' and 'The Whisperer in Darkness' are the best, to my mind。 'The Shadow over Innsmouth' is also good (if rather stretched out)。 'Herbert West- Reanimator' stood out because of its odd tone, in which Lovecraft almost seems to be playing it for laughs。 'The Call of Cthulhu' itself was okay, but disappointing given its lofty reputation。T All of the best stories in this collection are in the second half (although I did like the first one - 'Dagon', which was short and sharp)。 'The Colour Out of Space' and 'The Whisperer in Darkness' are the best, to my mind。 'The Shadow over Innsmouth' is also good (if rather stretched out)。 'Herbert West- Reanimator' stood out because of its odd tone, in which Lovecraft almost seems to be playing it for laughs。 'The Call of Cthulhu' itself was okay, but disappointing given its lofty reputation。The rest all follow a fairly set formula and vary in quality from 'okay' to 'bewildering' to 'a bit rubbish'。 It's interesting to observe the improvement in Lovecraft's writing over time, but I can't say this collection has inspired me to dig any deeper into his work - I think I'll take my enjoyment of the last few stories and leave it at that。 。。。more

A note to any new H。P Lovecraft reader; you'll either fall in love with H。P Lovecraft's work or loath it。 I am a long-time fan but I would recommend reading a few (freely available) stories online to find if his grandiose style, prolonged descriptions of classical architecture and sprawling retellings by unreliable narrators that go mad with clockwork regularity and, whose prose bear no relation to actual spoken English, are for you。Another issue is Lovecraft's vehement racism which he proselyti A note to any new H。P Lovecraft reader; you'll either fall in love with H。P Lovecraft's work or loath it。 I am a long-time fan but I would recommend reading a few (freely available) stories online to find if his grandiose style, prolonged descriptions of classical architecture and sprawling retellings by unreliable narrators that go mad with clockwork regularity and, whose prose bear no relation to actual spoken English, are for you。Another issue is Lovecraft's vehement racism which he proselytised in his letters, poems and stories; every villain or neo-human horror seems to be, resemble or stem from a non-white ethnicity that is to be hated and feared。 Again, I would recommend any new reader frame their reading, this time with the Personal Views: Race section of Lovecraft's Wikipedia page。For those who are a fan of Lovecraft's writing, The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories showcases stories from across Lovecraft's career, encompassing his whole range of literary styles。 The pure horror stories in the collection (The Hound, The Picture In The House) bear a heavy influence from Poe and traditional Gothic motifs, whereas the more nuanced stories take us through Lovecraft's lifelong fear of polluted bloodlines and being genetically disposed to madness (The Outsider, Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family, The Rats in the Walls, The Festival) and on atheism (Cool Air, Herbert West -- Reanimator)。These stories are well told, and chilling in their own right, but is in the Cthulhu Mythos stories that we find Lovecraft's greatest contribution to the horror genre。 Dagon, The Shadow over Innsmouth and The Haunter of The Dark represent Lovecraft's development of Cosmic Horror as a genre, while The Whisperer In Darkness and The Colour out of Space apply his malevolent universe to pure Sci-Fi。 The Call of Cthulhu is the most famous tale collected here; a panoramic narrative that takes the protagonist from New England to New Orleans to the sunken city of R'lyeh and is a must-read, alongside the perfectly realised and utterly unique prose poem Nyarlathotep。My only criticism is that Celephaïs and The Statement of Randolph Carter are both parts of Lovecraft's larger dream cycle, but are collected here in isolation from their larger narratives, making them feel vestigial and easily forgotten。Despite this, The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories is an expertly curated collection of works that I recommend to (properly prepared) Lovecraft readers or to long term fans whose copy of the dreadful Necronomicon requires a bookshelf companion。 。。。more

I've only read At the Mountains of Madness (which was awesome!) but wanted to truly delve into H。P。 Lovecraft since I've been on a Pulp kick lately。 The stories in this volume are all generally great, especially when they start fully going into the Cthulu Mythos。The only complaint I have is that the endings to most of the stories are predictable。 But I chalk that up to the dozens of stories inspired by Lovecraft which riffed on the basic plotlines and structures found here。Highly recommended for I've only read At the Mountains of Madness (which was awesome!) but wanted to truly delve into H。P。 Lovecraft since I've been on a Pulp kick lately。 The stories in this volume are all generally great, especially when they start fully going into the Cthulu Mythos。The only complaint I have is that the endings to most of the stories are predictable。 But I chalk that up to the dozens of stories inspired by Lovecraft which riffed on the basic plotlines and structures found here。Highly recommended for horror fans。 。。。more

Regarding The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories HP Lovecraft is a unique example of why art and its creator are two separate entities。 Specifically, as Susan Sontag declared, I paraphrase: “。。。 art rarely, if ever, has anything to do with its creator。” Lovecraft’s unparalleled style of writing is going to remain a testament of not only how one ought to judge art for the product rather than the creator, but also how style can supersede genre。 Prior to reading “The Call of Cthulhu and Other Regarding The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories HP Lovecraft is a unique example of why art and its creator are two separate entities。 Specifically, as Susan Sontag declared, I paraphrase: “。。。 art rarely, if ever, has anything to do with its creator。” Lovecraft’s unparalleled style of writing is going to remain a testament of not only how one ought to judge art for the product rather than the creator, but also how style can supersede genre。 Prior to reading “The Call of Cthulhu and Other Weird Stories,” I had little, if any, interest in horror genre。 However, after experiencing the mythos, atmosphere and feeling of terror Lovecraft was able to express with his style, I have changed my mind on the amount of enjoyment horror genre can bring。 。。。more

A fun read if only for the creation and use of a sci fi, cosmic horror genre。 The idea of the monsters introduces a philosophy of the meaninglessness of humanity that isn’t talked about enough。 The story telling of the individual stories got repetitive, especially outside of the call of Cthulhu。 Throughout, you see an othering of people outside the group of the protagonist and an overall lack of respect for other people, which pulled me out of the story and made it hard to relate。
