Summary

Chris Claremont and John Byrne's collaboration ranks among the greatest comic books have ever known。 Their X-Men defined Marvel's mutants, but of their many iconic stories, none was more epic or influential than "The Dark Phoenix Saga。" The X-Men fought many battles, set out on adventures that spanned galaxies and grappled with enemies of limitless might, but nothing could prepare them for their most shocking encounter: One of their own teammates, Jean Grey, has gained power beyond all comprehension, corrupting her and transforming her into the Dark Phoenix! They must fight the woman they cherish or the universe itself will be consumed by her unquenchable fire。 Also featuring Wolverine vs。 Wendigo, the dystopian debut of "Days of Future Past" and more!

It's a shame this excellent content was printed on translucent paper。。。 It's a shame this excellent content was printed on translucent paper。。。 。。。more

Great superhero melodrama, some of the best, but Terry Austin in the interview segment backup feature is right— the ending of Dark Phoenix really needed a third draft。

I've been waiting to read these stories for 20 years in an affordable (sorry Masterworks) colour (sorry Essentials) format。 The main selling point is that this collection closes out the Claremont-Byrne run, which features both "The Dark Phoenix Saga" and "Days of Future Past"。 The run ends with a good solo Kitty Pryde story at Christmas。The stories still hold up, the main issue is I find is how overly verbose Claremont is。 The collection includes "Phoenix: The Untold Story" and you can see Clare I've been waiting to read these stories for 20 years in an affordable (sorry Masterworks) colour (sorry Essentials) format。 The main selling point is that this collection closes out the Claremont-Byrne run, which features both "The Dark Phoenix Saga" and "Days of Future Past"。 The run ends with a good solo Kitty Pryde story at Christmas。The stories still hold up, the main issue is I find is how overly verbose Claremont is。 The collection includes "Phoenix: The Untold Story" and you can see Claremont re-writing some of the dialogue only a couple of years later。 I find some of his dialogue in explaining what is happening in the panels somewhat frustrating but it is hard to fault his writing given how much he has come to define the characters since taking over the book。 The inclusion of "Phoenix: The Untold Story" is great also, we see the original ending and the discussion to reach the re-write。 In saying that, the ending that would occur in #137 still works better in the context of the story。I love the Epic format and am glad to see this material finally collected here。 I am, however, not a fan of the flimsy cover that the Epics seem to be moving to and the thinner pages mean there is some bleed over from in the white areas of the page, from pages behind it。 。。。more

First time i’ve ever really read classic X-Men, and it didn’t disappointI’ve heard of Claremont’s epic run on the team, but to see just the iconic moments jam packed into one book over the course of 13 or so issues was truly marvelousThis also has some great side moments (LOVED Nightcrawler’s Inferno), and it just immediately made me feel at home with this teamI want the next volume ASAP!
