Summary

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the American Civil War, Margaret Mitchell's magnificent historical epic is an unforgettable tale of love and loss, of a nation mortally divided and a people forever changed。 Above all, it is the story of beautiful, ruthless Scarlett O'Hara and the dashing soldier of fortune, Rhett Butler。

Since its first publication in 1936, Gone with the Wind has endured a story for all our times。

Scarlett is the most malignantly narcissistic character I have ever read, other than Flynn’s titular “Gone Girl”。 The broad and detailed historical sweep is quite transportive and very enjoyable, but I did not like reading of Scarlett’s antics, interior world or infantile actions。 What a despicable heroine。 Mitchell’s choices are brilliant- envisioning such a person as the hero takes hutzpah, not to mention cleverness in what it subtly implies about the antiquated, feudal, dependent-on-slave lab Scarlett is the most malignantly narcissistic character I have ever read, other than Flynn’s titular “Gone Girl”。 The broad and detailed historical sweep is quite transportive and very enjoyable, but I did not like reading of Scarlett’s antics, interior world or infantile actions。 What a despicable heroine。 Mitchell’s choices are brilliant- envisioning such a person as the hero takes hutzpah, not to mention cleverness in what it subtly implies about the antiquated, feudal, dependent-on-slave labor Cotton Kingdom that birthed such a creature as Scarlett O’Hara。 Overall great book tho。 。。。more

4/5 - I don't even know where to start with this review, to be honest。 I was very excited when I started reading this book because I'd been wanting to read it for ages and never got the chance (or energy) to do it。 At first, I enjoyed reading about Scarlett's teenage years before the war, how she met Rhett and so on。 But, as the story progressed, I couldn't stand the author's constant racist remarks。 Not only are all the characters in this book racist (which I'm willing to try to understand cons 4/5 - I don't even know where to start with this review, to be honest。 I was very excited when I started reading this book because I'd been wanting to read it for ages and never got the chance (or energy) to do it。 At first, I enjoyed reading about Scarlett's teenage years before the war, how she met Rhett and so on。 But, as the story progressed, I couldn't stand the author's constant racist remarks。 Not only are all the characters in this book racist (which I'm willing to try to understand considering the period and the circumstances), but so is the author。 As a white person, I felt offended and disgusted reading certain comments and descriptions。。。and this is the reason why I can't say I loved this book and why I can't recommend it to anyone。I like many things about these characters, including Scarlett's determination to create a place for herself in a society which denied her everything。 Her lack of interest in marriage, her unwillingness to become a mere instrument to birth children and her desire to work and have a business of her own。 As for Rhett, I like how he's the only person who knows and understands Scarlett's nature。。。and I also like his final decision regarding their marriage。 With reference to their romantic relationship, this was supposed to be the greatest love story of all time。。。and I didn't find it to be so idyllic。 In fact, I think it's anything but a love story。All in all, I think it's dangerous to romanticize this novel, this romantic relationship and this period。 I gave it a four-star rating because it was entertaining to read (despite the gruesome racism) and I just couldn't stop reading, but that's it。 I still consider this book a classic since it perfectly depicts American society at that time, but I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a favorite or that I loved it。 The best part about it? THE END。 。。。more

I read this book eons ago, having won this exact paperback in my sixth grade class (however, I did not read it till high school)。 I remember that in college the classic film was showing, and I had to walk out in the middle!--because my reading of the book was too recent, and the film did not do it justice。 Over time, I was able to see and appreciate the film, but for anyone who likes the film, READ THE BOOK!

An opportunistic, emotionally abusive, snarky man chases after a conceited and shallow "lady" who's heart is committed to another (married) man。 In the end, neither of them learn their lessons about their broken ways of relating to people。 I don't get why people call this a great love story。 The book was most interesting during the first 2/3。 The main character, Scarlett, navigates the civil war, southern society, and her shitty decisions。 The author painted a very effective picture of the starv An opportunistic, emotionally abusive, snarky man chases after a conceited and shallow "lady" who's heart is committed to another (married) man。 In the end, neither of them learn their lessons about their broken ways of relating to people。 I don't get why people call this a great love story。 The book was most interesting during the first 2/3。 The main character, Scarlett, navigates the civil war, southern society, and her shitty decisions。 The author painted a very effective picture of the starvation and downright cruelty that the confederates endured。 It was confusing that the main characters knew that the confederates' motivation was wrong, and yet they did everything to defend their treatment of black people and their way of life。 The author goes to great lengths to justify the birth of the KKK as the confederates saw the situation。 It was disgusting and painful to read - downright racist。 It was still engaging and illuminating and a good read for anyone who wants to understand this time period and culture of the south a little better。 。。。more

I LOVE the movie but the book is OUTSTANDING! ❤ The book is certainly more extensive (in a good way) and it fills in lots of missing details from the movie! I especially enjoyed that part。。 Also there are several differences between the book and the movie! That was definitely a pleasant surprise! Clark Gable will always be my Rhett Butler and Vivian Leigh will always be my Scarlett O' Hara!!! I really LOVED the book version of Scarlett and Rhett! This book is hard to rate because on one hand, the story of Scarlett was great and interesting。 However, this book is completely outdated and there are other great and interesting books that get the same message across without the racism and misogyny。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I have so many feelings about this book。 Not one to read books that bring me unnecessary stress, and definitely not one to read books that have anything but a happy ending, this was a difficult book to read。 Not a difficult book to finish, because I surprisingly got through 700+ pages happily enough while under the illusion that everything would work out in the end。 But difficult to read, because the racism was hard to swallow; because the foolishness of Scarlett’s character was quite impossible I have so many feelings about this book。 Not one to read books that bring me unnecessary stress, and definitely not one to read books that have anything but a happy ending, this was a difficult book to read。 Not a difficult book to finish, because I surprisingly got through 700+ pages happily enough while under the illusion that everything would work out in the end。 But difficult to read, because the racism was hard to swallow; because the foolishness of Scarlett’s character was quite impossible to root for; because the only character I really liked was Melly (and Bonnie later on); and because, past the 700+ page mark, once I spoiled a large part of the ending for myself, it became harder to keep eagerly reading in pursuit of that non-existent happy ending。 Why did I even want that happy ending? Because as much as I disliked - and to the very end continue to dislike - Scarlett, I couldn’t see our heroine unhappy。 And because I knew Rhett was a cad and I was under no false illusion that he deserved ultimate happiness, but I did kind of like him - my feelings about Rhett are a bit more mixed up, to be honest。 I absolutely abhorred Ashley Wilkes, but Melanie was my darling, and she deserved to be happy beyond reason。 And finally Bonnie。。。sweet, wilful, spoiled little Bonnie。 I was so happy when Scarlett was pregnant with her, so loved her relationship with her father, and the fact that for once even Scarlett showed tenderness towards someone other than Ashley。 Bonnie was salvation for everyone, including myself。 Her death broke the straw on the camel’s back, and I felt that acutely。 Yes, it was a difficult read。 It makes me glad that we live in the current times。 Even with cancel culture, which I so hate, and the politically correct climate that curbs the voice of the common man insofar as to make it stifling to speak。 I do believe that whatever we are doing, we are doing to move towards an even more accepting future, and I’m glad we’re no longer in the racist, sexist, elitist society of the 19th century。 All the same, I hope that somewhere, in some magical faraway land where all characters in books come to life to truly exist outside of our active consciousness, all the characters in this book are being reborn happier。 。。。more
