Summary

On a clear night in late June 2005, four U。S。 Navy SEALs left their base in northern Afghanistan for the mountainous Pakistani border。 Their mission was to capture or kill a notorious Al Qaeda leader known to be ensconced in a Taliban stronghold surrounded by a small but heavily armed force。 Less than 24 hours later, only one of those Navy SEALs remained alive。
This is the story of fire team leader Marcus Luttrell, the sole survivor of Operation Redwing, and the desperate battle in the mountains that led, ultimately, to the largest loss of life in Navy SEAL history。 But it is also, more than anything, the story of his teammates, who fought ferociously beside him until he was the last one left-blasted unconscious by a rocket grenade, blown over a cliff, but still armed and still breathing。 Over the next four days, badly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell fought off six al Qaeda assassins who were sent to finish him, then crawled for seven miles through the mountains before he was taken in by a Pashtun tribe, who risked everything to protect him from the encircling Taliban killers。
Leading Petty Officer Luttrell takes us, blow-by-blow, through the brutal training of America's warrior elite and the relentless rites of passage required by the Navy SEALs。 He transports us to a monstrous battle fought in the desolate peaks of Afghanistan, where the beleaguered American team plummeted headlong a thousand feet down a mountain as they fought back through flying shale and rocks。 In this rich, moving chronicle of courage, honor, and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers one of the most powerful narratives ever written about modern warfare and a tribute to his teammates, who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country。

A little heavy on the hoo-ra tough guy mindset。 Written by someone trained to follow orders and be the ultimate killing machine, I don't know why I'm surprised that he can't see the intricacies of fighting a war where civilians are essentially hostage in their own country。 The book lacks any real introspection, other than to blame the "liberal" media for not letting him kill whoever he wants, potentially people that would save his life。Despite this, it is a very interesting look into the toughn A little heavy on the hoo-ra tough guy mindset。 Written by someone trained to follow orders and be the ultimate killing machine, I don't know why I'm surprised that he can't see the intricacies of fighting a war where civilians are essentially hostage in their own country。 The book lacks any real introspection, other than to blame the "liberal" media for not letting him kill whoever he wants, potentially people that would save his life。Despite this, it is a very interesting look into the toughness it takes to become a Navy Seal。 And a very jarring and amazing story of four Seals in a very serious and scary battle。 。。。more

Gripping story。 When I saw the movie, which was very hard to watch, I didn't think I could read the book。 However, I'm glad I did。 His whole account of becoming a Navy SEAL and the brutality of Operation Redwing really puts a lot into perspective about the sacrifices these guys made。 I will be forever grateful for their service。 I was lucky to see the patch on display at the Presidential library of GW Bush and just knowing the back story of it all makes it a humbling experience。 Excellent book, Gripping story。 When I saw the movie, which was very hard to watch, I didn't think I could read the book。 However, I'm glad I did。 His whole account of becoming a Navy SEAL and the brutality of Operation Redwing really puts a lot into perspective about the sacrifices these guys made。 I will be forever grateful for their service。 I was lucky to see the patch on display at the Presidential library of GW Bush and just knowing the back story of it all makes it a humbling experience。 Excellent book, well written and bittersweet。 。。。more

Great story told excruciatingly badly。 A little too preachy for my tastes。

Well I now have a greater appreciation for the men and women in the armed forces and even more for Navy Seals。 I knew they were big and bad, but I had no idea the training they endure just to become a protector of so many。 I love this great country so much and am thankful for our military who defend our freedoms at the risk of losing their own lives。 I usually don't care for military books or even books about war, simply because I really hate war。 I don't know that I will ever understand why lea Well I now have a greater appreciation for the men and women in the armed forces and even more for Navy Seals。 I knew they were big and bad, but I had no idea the training they endure just to become a protector of so many。 I love this great country so much and am thankful for our military who defend our freedoms at the risk of losing their own lives。 I usually don't care for military books or even books about war, simply because I really hate war。 I don't know that I will ever understand why leaders of countries think they can go and steal, destroy and takeover others。 It's just horrible。 But there are evil, selfish men out there who care nothing for others。 Which makes me all the more grateful for men like Petty Officer Marcus Luttrell and the men he's served with trying to defend human rights。I appreciate his brutal honesty in writing this memoir。 I can't imagine being wounded in the treacherous mountains of Afghanistan, your buddies have all been killed and several dozen Taliban crazed maniacs are hunting you。 Falling over cliffs, no where to hide, no food or water and no communication to get you out of this situation。 The worse would be losing all hope in such a predicament。 I was glad to see that he kept his faith and still believed in God。 Thank goodness he was found by a tribe of Pashtuns who lived up in the mountains and would fight the Talibans, even though they also aided the Taliban with food and shelter。 Crazy。I found it interesting that Pashtunwalai tribal law is being a good host and fighting to the death defending that guest。 The whole community protects them。 So Officer Luttrell was protected by this ancient practice which is called lokhay。 They would not surrender the wounded SEAL。 That is amazing to me, even when threatened by the ruthless Taliban。 I totally enjoyed learning about how hard it is to become a Navy SEAL and also that he made it through this horrifying experience in Afghanistan with the help of kind people (even though they could easily shoot you。) I hope writing this book was therapeutic for Mr。 Luttrell in witnessing the death of his comrades and his grueling week of trying to get back to safety。 I have so much more respect for our military than ever before。 。。。more

Fantastic book and amazing (yet sad) story。 Marcus is awesome, I just wish he didn’t scapegoat “liberals” so much。

Having not served in the US Military, I anticipated this book would help me better understand the sacrifice our nations soldiers endure。 Lone Survivor did much more than that。 This book gave me a clear picture of what our service men and women undertake when "signing up。" The information containing Navy SEAL training made it hard to imagine the strength and mental determination necessary to attain such an accomplishment。 As the book progresses, the reader gains a better understanding of that tra Having not served in the US Military, I anticipated this book would help me better understand the sacrifice our nations soldiers endure。 Lone Survivor did much more than that。 This book gave me a clear picture of what our service men and women undertake when "signing up。" The information containing Navy SEAL training made it hard to imagine the strength and mental determination necessary to attain such an accomplishment。 As the book progresses, the reader gains a better understanding of that training, and how it's applied (and is vital) in true life and death situations。 The never quit mentality of these soldiers, the liberal attitude of those on the outside, and the death of true heroes brought me to tears several times。 Lone Survivor puts the reader side by side our soldiers, experiencing the fight for freedom in which is so often overlooked by many Americans。 God Bless Marcus, and ever American that dons a military uniform。 。。。more

Incredible! I was on the edge of my seat for the whole gunfight scene。 WOW! I just can't even。。 SO many parts of this story are amazing。 God bless Marcus Luttrell。 I couldn't even begin to fathom living through something like this。 The things he witnessed, the sounds, the smells, the images of his fallen brothers。 I haven't seen the movie made from this tragic mission, but I cannot imagine it doing the drama, terror, and bravery endured in this fight for their lives, enough justice。 I'm just abs Incredible! While I'd read many other books about SEAL training, the actual tragic mission could only be real life; an author writing it as fiction would be laughed at for their "exaggeration" of how much punishment the SEALs survive, their brutal effectiveness in combat even while fatally wounded, the repeated miracle of his rifle, and the willingness of an entire village to risk their lives for a wounded stranger。 Not to mention the sudden, terrible doom of the soldiers whose rescue attempt would probably While I'd read many other books about SEAL training, the actual tragic mission could only be real life; an author writing it as fiction would be laughed at for their "exaggeration" of how much punishment the SEALs survive, their brutal effectiveness in combat even while fatally wounded, the repeated miracle of his rifle, and the willingness of an entire village to risk their lives for a wounded stranger。 Not to mention the sudden, terrible doom of the soldiers whose rescue attempt would probably form the meat of a movie about the situation had they lived。From training, to the fateful battle, to the selfless generosity of random strangers, to the aftermath, this book gripped me from start-to-finish。 。。。more

Marcus does an excellent job of recounting his incredible and heartbreaking story。 Some political bias on his side that he is not afraid to flaunt。 A good look into what it takes to become a Navy Seal and how these men lay down their lives for our country。 A powerful testimony to what lies out there and how the public and media see events such as these。

I have to admit I caught the film before I experienced the book。 I don't have much to say other than I still enjoyed the story as a glimpse into the lives of these brave men。 I think what stands out to me the most is that I recall the stories Marcus shares about all of the others around him more so than just what was going through his mind during these events。 Whether that is from his fellow trainees, his enemies, his protectors and his family and the president。 I'm sure I'll be visiting this on I have to admit I caught the film before I experienced the book。 I don't have much to say other than I still enjoyed the story as a glimpse into the lives of these brave men。 I think what stands out to me the most is that I recall the stories Marcus shares about all of the others around him more so than just what was going through his mind during these events。 Whether that is from his fellow trainees, his enemies, his protectors and his family and the president。 I'm sure I'll be visiting this one again in the future。 。。。more

I have a lot of respect for those who serve in the military—it's something I don't think I could do。 For their hard work and valor I gave this 3 stars。I didn't enjoy the book itself very much, though, and wouldn't necessarily recommend it。 Then again, it's good to read literature that challenges our views and perspectives and the tone of this book is certainly one I don't seek out much。 But, how are you supposed to judge a guy who went through something like that?At the end, I haven't learned an I have a lot of respect for those who serve in the military—it's something I don't think I could do。 For their hard work and valor I gave this 3 stars。I didn't enjoy the book itself very much, though, and wouldn't necessarily recommend it。 Then again, it's good to read literature that challenges our views and perspectives and the tone of this book is certainly one I don't seek out much。 But, how are you supposed to judge a guy who went through something like that?At the end, I haven't learned anything and don't know what to think。 Is there anything straightforward about war, though? The book is based on a really good story Where a man named Marcus Luttrell and his seal team were ambushed by the Taliban and fights them off。 The reason why this book is called the lone survivor is that Marcus Luttrell was the sole survivor of the Taliban attack。 He is then taken in by an Afganistan village and stands up to the Taliban, and fights them off。 While in the village they aided to his wounds from the previous Taliban attack。 This was one of the reasons why he helped the village fight The book is based on a really good story Where a man named Marcus Luttrell and his seal team were ambushed by the Taliban and fights them off。 The reason why this book is called the lone survivor is that Marcus Luttrell was the sole survivor of the Taliban attack。 He is then taken in by an Afganistan village and stands up to the Taliban, and fights them off。 While in the village they aided to his wounds from the previous Taliban attack。 This was one of the reasons why he helped the village fight them off。 One of the reasons why I didn't rate the book higher is because the beginning is really boring。 For the first one hundred pages or so all he talks about is his seal training and his seal team。 There wasn't a lot there to grab your attention and keep it there。 Other than the beginning I really like the book and the real-life story he tells。 If you like real-life war stories I would recommend this book to you。 。。。more

I have very complicated and mixed feelings about this story。 It was very compelling to read, hence the four stars, and I applaud anyone who has the ambition, guts, passion and calling to not only serve in our military but become a Navy Seal。 I am forever grateful and in awe。 I struggle mightily to reconcile killing as a response to killing, but that is absolutely not a judgement on those who serve, just a tip-of-the-iceberg statement on my complicated and mixed feelings about the story。 The conf I have very complicated and mixed feelings about this story。 It was very compelling to read, hence the four stars, and I applaud anyone who has the ambition, guts, passion and calling to not only serve in our military but become a Navy Seal。 I am forever grateful and in awe。 I struggle mightily to reconcile killing as a response to killing, but that is absolutely not a judgement on those who serve, just a tip-of-the-iceberg statement on my complicated and mixed feelings about the story。 The conflicting reports out there about the true number of enemy combatants faced on the mountain that day are also unsettling。 When I read a memoir or non-fiction story I’d like to know that what I’m reading is factual and not embellished or altered in any way for the sake of storytelling, but I also understand that when you are under the highest stress of being actively being stalked and shot at, your mind may or may not remember things accurately。 。。。more

Sometimes, to protect the ones you love and support and respect, you have to be willing to lay your life on the line no matter what。 Marcus Luttrell knows this all too well。 As a Navy SEAL,he was one of four men who teamed up to fight against terrorists in Pakistan。 As a team leader,he's expected to rise up to the challenge of taking out an Al Qaeda leader。 They know it's a dangerous mission, and yet they're still willing to do it。 The reason why? I’m a Former Marine, I 100% enjoyed this story。 There were moments of light humor and deep moments when I was in tears。 So much I can say here, but it just grabbed my heart that the bodies were retrieved and brought home。 I thought it was written and presented well。 I served around the same time so I picked up on majority of the jargon and the talking style。 Grateful to read the story。 Great reminder that others have paid the price for our freedom。
