Enjoyed it more than I thought I would。 I find the graphics a bit confusing but the story is solid and entertaining。

[may have some spoilers] Manga is a genre with which I have had no prior experience, yet with my teenagers, both my boys and my girls, it seems all the rage these days。 In taking my youngest, 4 years of age, indeed, I was caught off guard when she asked for a book on Naruto --- so her older siblings have even passed it onto her。 So that's how I ended up reading this。 As I learned later from the author's remarks this is not meant for her age level ---- recommended age level for this series is 13 [may have some spoilers] Manga is a genre with which I have had no prior experience, yet with my teenagers, both my boys and my girls, it seems all the rage these days。 In taking my youngest, 4 years of age, indeed, I was caught off guard when she asked for a book on Naruto --- so her older siblings have even passed it onto her。 So that's how I ended up reading this。 As I learned later from the author's remarks this is not meant for her age level ---- recommended age level for this series is 13 and over。 Having said that, most of it seems fairly harmless with the exception of when Naruto exercises his doppelganger power and creates illusions of shapely women whose curves leave to the imagination --- doesn't actually show the private parts --- yet surely driving young male fans' hormones up considerably, no doubt。 Regarding entertainment value, I found some of this book mildly amusing; however, the latter part seemed to consist of the opposing sides engaging in longwinded monologuing about their special powers and/or strategems versus the other。 I did initially find one character worrisome from my point of view as a father --- Haku。 This is an androgynous male character who looks very effeminate。 That's not necessarily the problem --- since to my occidental, unfamiliar-with-manga eyes --- most male manga characters look that way。 ( If some find that remark objectionable or ignorant, too bad --- just calling it as a I see it。 Never claimed to be an expert conossieur of manga。 ) The problem I found with Haku is that Kishimoto in one of his commentaries in between episodes refers to him as consort of Zabuza, one of the bad guy ninja opposing Naruto and his comrades。 Since Zabuza is a full grown man, and Haku looks no more than 12 years old, it raised question in my mind as to whether or not Kishimoto is trying normalize pedophilia in some way。 However, in the actual story, there is no evidence of Zabuza acting as any thing other than as a sensei and mentor for his youthful protege。 Having said that, I decided to check out some manga sites to see what they had to say about Haku --- and these seem to confirm that he's a student, not an intimate partner of, an adult ninja instructor。 So it looks like this was just either a poor choice of words by Kishimoto ---- or, perhaps, this was an unfortunate mistranslation of his words from Japanese into English。 The 2-star rating is not because of that。 It's because I found the fight sequences either difficult to follow or boring。 In many frames, both adversaries often have similar features, hair, clothing, etc such that it was tough figuring out who was attacking whom。 In addition, I found the story line building up to something, yet having long boring interludes, then, after plowing through about 150 pages of this dreck, the story just ends inconclusively with what looked to me like nothing more than Naruto making empty threats and throwing a temper tantrum against a superior opponent --- and that's it。 I understand some literary device in the idea with readers of always leaving them on edge to wanting more。 But, frankly, my give-a-ding-dang about the story characters done gone off and went after over 600 pages of this business。I guess hardcore manga fans may like this book。 I don't get it。 It seems relatively harmless, but I've seen a lot better graphic novels。 。。。more

I've started and watch the anime up to and pasted the point where this bind up of the first three volumes of the manga ends。 The anime seems to for the most part in line with the manga in the volume。 I preferred the bind up more then I think I would have the original individual volumes because they are short and cliff hanger ending so three volumes as one made a more enjoyable reading experience。 This is a shonen manga meaning it a fun adventure romp with humor and heartfelt moments。 Making this I've started and watch the anime up to and pasted the point where this bind up of the first three volumes of the manga ends。 The anime seems to for the most part in line with the manga in the volume。 I preferred the bind up more then I think I would have the original individual volumes because they are short and cliff hanger ending so three volumes as one made a more enjoyable reading experience。 This is a shonen manga meaning it a fun adventure romp with humor and heartfelt moments。 Making this a fun enjoyable read that was light and fast paced when I could sit down and read。 。。。more

I've been watching Naruto for the last few months and I'd like to say that it has been a major component to getting me through my depression。 I -hated- Naruto as a character at first but his backstory, his attitude, and how he never gives up on his friends is an inspiration。 I am really excited to read the manga from the start and will be picking up the next in the series。 I really like buying them in the 3 in 1 format because I go through solo volumes so quickly。 I've been watching Naruto for the last few months and I'd like to say that it has been a major component to getting me through my depression。 I -hated- Naruto as a character at first but his backstory, his attitude, and how he never gives up on his friends is an inspiration。 I am really excited to read the manga from the start and will be picking up the next in the series。 I really like buying them in the 3 in 1 format because I go through solo volumes so quickly。 。。。more

Read for Graphic Novels class。I just don't think Naruto is for me。 Perhaps I'm too old, but while I can sympathize with Naruto's backstory, that doesn't give him free excuse to be rude and combative and do pranks that cause property damage or emotional harm。 The times I liked Naruto most were when he was having calm conversations, or actually pausing to think through things。Also, the gender stereotyping of Sakura was extremely painful。 That, combined with the fact that Naruto's doppleganger pran Read for Graphic Novels class。I just don't think Naruto is for me。 Perhaps I'm too old, but while I can sympathize with Naruto's backstory, that doesn't give him free excuse to be rude and combative and do pranks that cause property damage or emotional harm。 The times I liked Naruto most were when he was having calm conversations, or actually pausing to think through things。Also, the gender stereotyping of Sakura was extremely painful。 That, combined with the fact that Naruto's doppleganger prank involved your traditional pin-up naked girl, did not bode well for the series having well developed female characters。 Upon further research, that seems to be a correct assumption。 。。。more

wreaked havoc on Konohagakure; the Village Hidden in the Leaves, killing hundreds of honorable ninja in the skirmish and leaving many children without homes or parents。 The Fourth Hokage (leader of the village) unleashes a forbidden jutsu (magic spell/ninja ability) to seal the spirit of the evil fox into the body of a newborn baby named Naruto at the cost of his own life。 He did this in the hopes that the boy could one day learn to master the power of the demonic spirit and use it to protect the village and become a great hero of the people。Unknown to the citizens of the Leaf, the Nine Tailed Fox was being controlled by an even more powerful adversary, a legendary rogue ninja that plans to wage war against the entire world from the shadows。 The identity of the mysterious ninja that attacked the Leaf Village using the Nine Tails died with the Fourth Hokage, and he used what remained of his life to gift Naruto with the power of one day being able to stop this evil ninja and a clan of outlawed S-rank criminals called the Akatsuki from committing mass genocide against the many hidden villages and clans of the world。Because of the evil spirit sealed inside him, Naruto grew up hated by the other children of the village because they believe him and the Nine Tails to be one and the same。 They believe he’s a ticking time bomb waiting to go off, waiting for the perfect moment to kill them all just like the Nine Tails killed their parents and families。 Shunned, dehumanized and treated like dirt, Naruto vows to become the greatest hokage the world has ever seen so that he can receive the love and acknowledgement he never got as a child。On top of the Nine Tails power and the will to never quit, Naruto also possesses the uncanny ability to turn everyone he meets into a potential comrade。 He brings out the best in his peers and tries his hardest to make his enemies see the errors of their ways。 He disobeys the rules and ignores cultural traditions to try and make changes to the world and break the eternal cycle of war and hatred through his own methods。 His determination is infectious to friend and foe alike。 He earns himself the respect he deserves by overcoming one impossible obstacle at a time。Naruto encounters many fascinating and terrifying ninja over the course of his journey to become hokage。 Among them are Sasuke Uchiha, Naruto’s best friend and rival who is driven by the vengeful lust to murder his elder brother after he wiped out their own clan in cold blood。 Sasuke warms up to Naruto, but his hatred and trauma are dangerous forces that threaten to break his moral code as a ninja and destroy his reputation among his peers。Kakashi Hatake is a notorious copycat ninja that survived one of the most brutal and devastating wars in history as well as the Nine Tails attack on the Leaf Village。 He becomes Naruto and Sasuke’s mentor and teaches them a great number of valuable lessons about surviving in the dangerous world of rogue ninja, bloodthirsty assassins and clans ruled by corruption。Jiraiya is a perverted yet wise sage who taught the Fourth Hokage everything he knew and he’s regarded as a god among shinobi that’s famous for his heroic actions in the second great ninja war。 He takes an interest in Naruto and raises him as a father figure to carry on the legacy of the Fourth Hokage to prepare him for the many dangerous people that want to use his power for their own nefarious purposes。The Akatsuki is one such group of wicked ninja。 Among them are Sasuke’s brother Itachi who murdered his clan and possesses many dangerous techniques involving illusions, psychological torture and elemental manipulation。 Sasori who controls poisonous puppets with magical threads, Orochimaru who mastered the forbidden arts of reanimation and quasi-immortality, Deidara who fights from afar using detonating clay and many other deadly foes。The entire series chronicles Naruto and his fellow ninja comrades growing through countless trials and tragedies。 There are hundreds of unique jutsus, clans, and techniques which lead to some very intense, creative and strategic battles between skilled ninja with diverse abilities that don’t always match up evenly。 There are clan based abilities such as the Aburame clan’s ability to control insects, the Yamanaka clan’s ability to jump into other people’s minds and control their bodies and the Inuzuka clan’s ability to bond with wolves that learn to mimic their master’s battle skills。 Then there’s ocular genetic abilities such as the sharingan which allows the user to create psychological illusions, copy their enemy’s abilities and manipulate elemental energy。 The byakugan allows the user to read their enemies vital points and detect their spiritual energy from faraway。 The rinnegan grants control over space and gravity and so on。On top of having countless unique abilities, nearly every character has a tragic backstory that makes them sympathetic and relatable, even the nastiest of the villains have well-explored reasons for following the paths they do and becoming the way they are。 One of my favorite aspects of the series is how well it explores the physical, emotional and psychological effects war can have on society and culture as well as the survivors and future generations that are forced to live in them。 How it breeds racism and cultural disputes, how it inspires hatred in orphaned children and war veterans robbed of their homes toward foreign nations, as well as how this eventually leads to further death, war, poverty and destruction。 Learning to forgive the ones you hate to prevent further conflict and damaging the world for future generations even further is a major theme throughout the story。Being a massive 700 chapter series, it’s not too surprising that there’s some plot holes and consistency issues。 A rule might be stated regarding the requirements and usage of a certain jutsu or ability only for that rule to be repeatedly broken 400 chapters later。 Sometimes the characters and rules contradict themselves, sometimes the chronology of certain events and historical facts don’t match up perfectly, the lore and general backstory go through several retcons that change the philosophy and power scaling of the characters and the scope of world-building; the final arc especially drags on and breaks a lot of the logic and rules that the story spent the whole series setting up, etc。。。Naruto’s far from perfect, but I remember it very fondly for being one of the first series that introduced me to things like manga and Japanese entertainment in general。 It was one of those childhood classics like Dragon Ball, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho and Rurouni Kenshin。 The series grew up with me and I can’t help but feel grateful to it for introducing me to hundreds of other franchises that I’m still a huge fan of to this day and I continue to find many new ones on the regular。 Naruto's journey from a clownish, disrespected outcast into a talented, well-loved and admired hero is a memorable one。 。。。more

I can't believe this is my first time reading the manga - I started collecting the volumes shortly after I started watching the anime, between the ages of 13-16, and it has taken me until I'm 20 to actually finish collecting all 72 volumes and come to the decision to read them。 At this point in my life I'm past the whole Naruto craze - I got very obsessed with it for a significant portion of my teenage years and devoted so many hours to watching it, perusing fanart, reading fanfiction (even dabb I can't believe this is my first time reading the manga - I started collecting the volumes shortly after I started watching the anime, between the ages of 13-16, and it has taken me until I'm 20 to actually finish collecting all 72 volumes and come to the decision to read them。 At this point in my life I'm past the whole Naruto craze - I got very obsessed with it for a significant portion of my teenage years and devoted so many hours to watching it, perusing fanart, reading fanfiction (even dabbling in writing some) etc。 that it got a little crazy。 I loved the world and the characters and formulated my own theories and came up with my own endings, and then Boruto came out and I fell out of love with the series, which had started happening really since the ending of the anime, which I didn't particularly enjoy。 Going back to a series that I once adored with fresh eyes was thus a strange experience。 It's my first time consuming the story in this format, but it's a story and characters I also know very well - despite some odd translations that were in this volume in particular。 There was a lot of nostalgia, but there were also a lot of things wrong with the series that I noticed that I had previously ignored or dismissed as inconsequential, and the most important of these is definitely the treatment of women, and the treatment of Sakura in particular。I hated the way she was depicted in the first three volumes。 Her only personality is liking Sasuke, with the minor addition to hating on Naruto。 She's supposed to be between 12-13 at the beginning of the series, and she is already so obsessed with her looks, dieting, and her apparent lack of 'sex appeal' - being bothered that she couldn't attract Sasuke because apparently she had a big forehead and no boobs or ass。 Also, apparently she's 'desperate' and expects this to work on attracting Sasuke to her - she's twelve。 The only thing she's desperate for is some basic self-respect。 It was so jarring - normal girls that age don't typically worry about those sorts of things。 Sure, they may have crushes on boys, and may worry if they're cute enough, but it's not overly sexualised in the way that it's described in the manga, and it certainly isn't the girls' entire personality。 The thing is - Sakura could be an amazing character。 She's a female ninja who has shown she has excellent control over her chakra and it's already hinting at the medical side of things which are to come in future volumes, she's intelligent (when there aren't needless gags and showing how she 'adores Sasuke' so much as there she apparently throws any hint of intelligence out of the window as soon as he appears), and she has so much potential which the first three volumes just completely threw away。 What's more, there's no real reason given for why she is so attracted to Sasuke other than superficial things about his looks and how good of a ninja he is。 He's repeatedly rude and cruel to her, and she clearly knows nothing about him - hence her insensitive comments about Naruto's lack of family, which prompts Sasuke's own ire。 The feud with Naruto is also a little ridiculous - there's no real reason why she doesn't like him either, aside from being a tad annoying。 He never pranks her and is nothing but nice because of his own crush, repeatedly praises her, and the 'inner Sakura' depictions show that she actually thinks he has a point sometimes and finds some of the pranks a little funny, and yet she still treats him like trash and hates on him for no purpose。 Yes, there is the whole thing about the parents passing down their hatred of Naruto down to their children, but even that wasn't explored specifically with Sakura。 That being said, despite my issues I still enjoyed the story。 Naruto is somewhat cringy for the first part of Naruto (basically up until the time-skip) but I appreciated his strive for recognition, if little else, and despite Sasuke's endless angst, he is at least tolerable in the earlier volumes and shows he is opening up to the rest of Team Seven。 His saving Naruto from Haku is still one of my favourite moments from the series, especially because of how mindless it was - it shows he doesn't only hate everything, and it's the first true hint of the bond forming between himself and Naruto, especially as Naruto loses control and Kurama starts leaking out a bit straight after when he's (view spoiler)[presumed dead。 (hide spoiler)]It set up the scene quite well and the systems themselves are very interesting。 I'm not quite as into as I would have been if I was coming into this for the first time because I do already know the world and what happens, and the information reveal is very slow in the beginning, setting the pace and making sure beginners to the series can keep up。 Hopefully I will be able to enjoy it more as the series continues, but so far I am happy I decided to finally read this manga, even if my rating doesn't necessarily reflect that in the purest sense。 。。。more

I loved reading this series。 The action was enthralling and I really grew to care about Naruto。 Watching him mature was really, really amazing。 The main issue that has stopped me from fully loving this series was how underdeveloped the female characters were。 Nearly every female main character had a love interest that seemed to drive their entire being, and they were all heteronormative relationships。 There were also a lot of degrading comments about females and how they communicate and act。 It I loved reading this series。 The action was enthralling and I really grew to care about Naruto。 Watching him mature was really, really amazing。 The main issue that has stopped me from fully loving this series was how underdeveloped the female characters were。 Nearly every female main character had a love interest that seemed to drive their entire being, and they were all heteronormative relationships。 There were also a lot of degrading comments about females and how they communicate and act。 It was incredibly obvious from the beginning that we weren't going to see any realistic female shinobi (Mei Terumī the fifth Mizukage is a great example of a really strong shinobi that is made to act stupid through her relationship with Chōjūrō and Ao [its just so annoying cause she is the fucking fifth Mizukage!!!
