Summary

Continuing the story of The Hobbit, this three-volume boxed set of Tolkien's epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings, features striking black covers based on Tolkien's own design, the definitive text, and three maps including a detailed map of Middle-earth。

Sauron, the Dark Lord, has gathered to him all the Rings of Power - the means by which he intends to rule Middle-earth。 All he lacks in his plans for dominion is the One Ring - the ring that rules them all - which has fallen into the hands of the hobbit, Bilbo Baggins。

In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care。 Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose。

Since it was first published in 1954, The Lord of the Rings has been a book people have treasured。 Steeped in unrivalled magic and otherworldliness, its sweeping fantasy has touched the hearts of young and old alike。

I really wanted to love this book but unfortunately it just wasn't for me and reading it became a real slog by the end。 I appreciate it for its contribution to the genre but it's definitely taught me to stick to modern fantasy for now! Tämän kirjan myötä hyppäsin varhaisteininä kirjallisuuden syvään päätyyn。 Erinomainen tapa koukuttaa nuoria kundeja on kirjoittaa seikkailu, jonka taustalla on koko ajan surumielinen tunne unohdetusta historiasta, katoavasta tiedosta, suuresta vaaran tunnusta ja luotettavasta kaveruudesta。 En ole lukenut mitään kirjaa kokonaan yhtä monta kertaa kuin tätä。Tämän kirjan jälkeen luulin pitäväni fantasiakirjallisuudesta ja yritin hirveän monta kertaa toistaa Tolkienin kirjoista saamaani kokemusta - o Tämän kirjan myötä hyppäsin varhaisteininä kirjallisuuden syvään päätyyn。 Erinomainen tapa koukuttaa nuoria kundeja on kirjoittaa seikkailu, jonka taustalla on koko ajan surumielinen tunne unohdetusta historiasta, katoavasta tiedosta, suuresta vaaran tunnusta ja luotettavasta kaveruudesta。 En ole lukenut mitään kirjaa kokonaan yhtä monta kertaa kuin tätä。Tämän kirjan jälkeen luulin pitäväni fantasiakirjallisuudesta ja yritin hirveän monta kertaa toistaa Tolkienin kirjoista saamaani kokemusta - onnistumatta siinä ikinä ja jouduin toteamaan, etten pidä fantasiakirjallisuudesta。 Pidän Tolkienista。 。。。more

Un vero peccato per il genere fantasy。The most famous classic fantasy, because its amazing and above all thanks to the cinema has brought the public's attention back to the fantasy genre。 If there is at least one person in the world who has not yet seen the Jackson trilogy, I recommend reading the book first (I know it's a bit long, but it's worth it) because after each character will have the faces of the actors and it's a shame。We all know the plot: Bilbo Baggins leaves the ring to Frodo who leaves with Sam and Gandalf for Rivendell。 The ring is Sauron's "only ring" and must be destroyed in Mount Doom, only possible with the help of characters who will help Frodo and distract the enemy。 Dwarves, elves, great human warriors, orcs and wizards, classic fantasy in all its glory with well-described characters, epic battles and heroes of all kinds。 In fact, you don't have to be a warrior to be a hero, hobbits know something。Tolkien didn't write a story, but a parallel world with many languages invented ad hoc and which made young and old fall in love with fantasy。 The Lord of the Rings is always and in any case one of the best for the complexity of the story, the intensity of the characters and above all it is not the classic adventure of only teenagers 。。。 why is it not the majority of modern fantasies of the genre? A real shame for the fantasy genre。 。。。more

I really don't know when I will get to this。 I mean, I've wanted to read this since forever。 I never really read the GR reviews for this book, but today I did and I can't find any review that has rated this below 3 stars。 Wow。 This really must be the fantasy masterpiece it is called。 I need to read LOTR now。 I really don't know when I will get to this。 I mean, I've wanted to read this since forever。 I never really read the GR reviews for this book, but today I did and I can't find any review that has rated this below 3 stars。 Wow。 This really must be the fantasy masterpiece it is called。 I need to read LOTR now。 。。。more

Every time I come back to this series, I feel refreshed。 It seems the more I read other books the more drained I feel; or at least I feel most other books feel lacking in some (or many) capacities and then I find reading grows tedious。。。 However, then I read LOTR and again I'm brought to tears at the beauty of friendship and camaraderie, of faithfulness and loyalty, of suffering and perseverance。 Honestly it is so worth the time。 If you struggle to get through it, I recommend audiobooking it! Well, it only took me nine years, but I finally completed the Lord of the Rings trilogy! The third book, ‘The Return of the King’, was definitely my favorite。 I was sad to see this magnificent world come to a close, but heaven knows Tolkien has thousands of pages of notes in regards to Middle Earth。 Well done, Grandfather Tolkien。

Similarly to the Hobbit, I attempted to read LOTR in school。 I was a little older, though - I was in grade ten, so in high school。 This was around when the movies were coming out in theattes, so that's dating me a little lol。Anyway, I stopped around when Frodo just left the Shire。 As such, I never made it that far。 I can see why - as much as I enjoyed the book on this read through, it is a slower paced book than I was hoping for at the time。 It is a beautifully written story, and a great feat of Similarly to the Hobbit, I attempted to read LOTR in school。 I was a little older, though - I was in grade ten, so in high school。 This was around when the movies were coming out in theattes, so that's dating me a little lol。Anyway, I stopped around when Frodo just left the Shire。 As such, I never made it that far。 I can see why - as much as I enjoyed the book on this read through, it is a slower paced book than I was hoping for at the time。 It is a beautifully written story, and a great feat of worldbuilding, especially for the 1950s。 It can drag on a little too long on minutae, but still worth the read through。 。。。more

I read it again for the third time。 It’s still a great tale, and I discovered many parts that I had forgotten。 Given that Tolkien was a Christian, many have tried to read metaphor into the story, despite Tolkien’s very clear statement that “I hate metaphor, and there is no hidden meaning behind the tale。” His friend C。 S。 Lewis believed that human beings naturally are attracted to stories and values that are fulfilled in God’s salvation events。 For instance, many cultures have stories of resurre I read it again for the third time。 It’s still a great tale, and I discovered many parts that I had forgotten。 Given that Tolkien was a Christian, many have tried to read metaphor into the story, despite Tolkien’s very clear statement that “I hate metaphor, and there is no hidden meaning behind the tale。” His friend C。 S。 Lewis believed that human beings naturally are attracted to stories and values that are fulfilled in God’s salvation events。 For instance, many cultures have stories of resurrected gods。 None can compare to the true story of the resurrection of Jesus。 So, given Tolkien’s own Christian world view, The Lord of the Rings understandably includes people and events that suggest biblical parallels。 Here are a few:•tAragorn the returning king, exemplifies in his life and values the ideal of the “Servant Leader。” He is kind, humble, a healer, and gives of himself sacrificially on behalf of others。 Not to mention his almost other-worldly power and ability to attract the loyalty of others。•tThe elves suggest non-human angelic beings that are not subject to the same degree of death and decay that characterize the humans。•tThe victory over a supremely powerful evil is won by the most humble and powerless of creatures (the hobbits), not by force of arms but only by sacrificial persistence and inextinguishable hope。•tA wise hero of the story (Gandolph) willingly dies to protect his friends and their mission, and then is resurrected from death in a way that is an unexplained mystery。•tThe ring itself exemplifies the evil influence of power and its ability to corrupt those that crave power。•tGood wins out over evil。The person of God is totally absent from the plot。 No one prays。 No one mentions Him, or his will, or his love, or his power。 There is a great deal of magic, and even references to what might be called “religion” but other than that, the setting is completely secular。 In the place of God there is the mysterious workings of “fate” or what appears to some to be blind luck。 。。。more
