Summary

Balancing epic and intensely personal stakes, bestselling author Adam Silvera’s Infinity Son is a gritty, fast-paced adventure about two brothers caught up in a magical war generations in the making。

Growing up in New York, brothers Emil and Brighton always idolized the Spell Walkers—a vigilante group sworn to rid the world of specters。 While the Spell Walkers and other celestials are born with powers, specters take them, violently stealing the essence of endangered magical creatures。

Brighton wishes he had a power so he could join the fray。 Emil just wants the fighting to stop。 The cycle of violence has taken a toll, making it harder for anyone with a power to live peacefully and openly。 In this climate of fear, a gang of specters has been growing bolder by the day。

Then, in a brawl after a protest, Emil manifests a power of his own—one that puts him right at the heart of the conflict and sets him up to be the heroic Spell Walker Brighton always wanted to be。

Brotherhood, love, and loyalty will be put to the test, and no one will escape the fight unscathed。

the plot is good, the universe adam created is interesting, i love fantasy novel with characters with magic powers like this one。 but, that’s just my taste, i’m not into superhero concept, i’m not into connected concept for my fantasy reading (youtube, filming for views。。。) so it was hard for me to appreciate my reading。 i liked the connected concept in They Both Die At the End but not here。i’m not saying that this book is bad, but that was not a book for me。

Otro libro de Adam Silvera que me encantó, la fantasía y el mundo de Infinity Son es muy bueno, la relación de Emil y Brighton me gustó mucho porque es un amor de hermanos muy relatable y el final me dejó SHOCKEADA

Pros:-LGBT+ representation: it's there as your usual obligatory YA romance subplot, not a "I was discriminated against because I was gay" subplot。-。。。plausibly racially diverse cast? I'm saying you probably won't have to mentally revise what the characters look like halfway through。Ambiguous Pro/Con:-Subverts the found family trope: you think this band of misfit will love eachother? They will not。 You could consider it to have some degree of found family since (view spoiler)[ the two brothers aren't biologically related, but I don't think the found family trope includes being literally found in an alley and adopted as a baby。 (hide spoiler)]Cons:-Weak worldbuilding: you can keep referencing how powerful that one constellation is, but that doesn't give me much information。-No satisfying resolution: every problem is solved badly。 This causes more problems, or for previously solved problems to backslide。 As a result, even though the plot is progressing, none of it actually feels like progress。-Unpleasant characters: sorry (Character with Unprocessed Trauma), but what are you Doing。 It's good for a book to have a variety of characters, and it's good for characters to have good and bad qualities。 That said, some characters come off as deeply self-centered, and they cause many problems, and I want to punt them。-Bad foreshadowing。 The plot progression is incredibly predictable, since certain characters reliably cause problems。 The story will concuss you with red flags and remove your ability to feel suspense。-POV shifts: I'm not into them。 I didn't find the shifts to be particularly enlightening for the plot, and they failed to make me feel more forgiving/understanding towards certain characters。 (I understand their motives, but I am still filled with judgement。)Overall: 3 stars because I liked the little bit of gay subplot。 Otherwise, mhjghdhhhhhh。。。。。。 。。。more

I desperately wanted to like this book because I love fantasy, NYC and gays。 But between the weak world building, the lack of distinguishable characters and the insane pacing, I just couldn’t get into the book as much as I had hoped。

Adam Silvera is a talented writer, and I've genuinely enjoyed other books of his that I've read, but。。。 this one doesn't quite live up to the others。This is Silvera's first official fantasy (though some of his other work has included elements of speculative fiction)。 Essentially it's superheroes in modern day New York。 There were things I genuinely liked about it - the discussion about male body image was really strong (even though it felt like it came out of nowhere), and the desire of the brot Adam Silvera is a talented writer, and I've genuinely enjoyed other books of his that I've read, but。。。 this one doesn't quite live up to the others。This is Silvera's first official fantasy (though some of his other work has included elements of speculative fiction)。 Essentially it's superheroes in modern day New York。 There were things I genuinely liked about it - the discussion about male body image was really strong (even though it felt like it came out of nowhere), and the desire of the brother to prove that he was powerful even without superpowers was very realistic, especially given that his whole goal was to go viral。 There was clearly a lot of world building that was happening in the background, and there were some magical creatures included in this that I hadn't seen before。 Solid work。That said, I think this would have worked better as a graphic novel。 This was clearly inspired by superhero comics (it said as much in the acknowledgements), and unfortunately I don't think the transition from comic book to novel worked as well as it could have。 Granted, I'm not super familiar with comics, but it seems like we got minimal exposition or background information, and things kept happening, but I wasn't sure about anybody's motivations (except for Brighton's)。 Why was the main antagonist trying to do all of these things。 Why were the assassins trying to help her? (We kind of get an answer for one of these but not for everybody else, including one of the other main characters)。 Why does Ness hate his dad? Why does the senator hate Celestials? Why does one character keep dying and then showing up a few pages later totally fine? Another issue I had is that there wasn't a lot of range - it felt like the same thing was happening a lot (there were like three or four different kidnapping plots? Three or four deep secrets revealed in a group of people and somebody having a hard time with that?) A few characters were a bit one note (We only know that one character is the antagonist because people tell us she is - I don't know anything about her or why she turned to villainy in the first place)。 Sometimes it felt like characters only behaved in certain ways because it was what would move the plot around, but I'm not sure if that's really true because a lot of the characters were so undefined。 And, as strong and as real as the body image issues were to read, they really felt dismissed in kind of a cavalier way ("all that matters is that you're happy with yourself!" "you're right!" *Problem Solved*)This was not really a book for me。 To be fair, I've never really been into superheroes much in the first place, so maybe I should have known, but I've enjoyed Silvera's other books, so I assumed I would enjoy this too, that it would say interesting things about class and sexuality and different relationships and growing up but。。。 it didn't, really。 I mean, it kind of acknowledged these things, but didn't say anything interesting about them, not like all of Silvera's other books did。 I guess because I enjoyed his other books, I figured I'd enjoy this one as well。 Unfortunately, that wasn't the case。I still think Silvera is a talented writer。 One of the reasons I still haven't read They Both Die at the End is because I know I'm going to cry and we're in the middle of a pandemic so I need to get to a place where I'm not barely holding it together (I read Stone Butch Blues earlier this year and cried for about five hours after finishing that book because that's where my head's at)。 He's more successful than I've ever been, and will likely continue to be。 I can tell this is a story that he really wanted to write。 Unfortunately, and probably because of me, it wasn't a story that I really wanted to read。 I hope the sequel (and if there are any other books planned for this series, all of them) turn out well and that people enjoy them。 As for me, I'll wait until his next book comes out。 。。。more

I finally read the gay bird book。Infinity Son is an urban fantasy that follows our main character Emil amidst a pretty large cast of characters as they try to survive an alternate New York City。 This alternate history is one that is very different from ours (superheroes have always existed-the main group in New York are known as the Celestials) and sometimes not so different from ours (a very minor sub-plot involves an upcoming election that will have huge consequences for the country if it goes I finally read the gay bird book。Infinity Son is an urban fantasy that follows our main character Emil amidst a pretty large cast of characters as they try to survive an alternate New York City。 This alternate history is one that is very different from ours (superheroes have always existed-the main group in New York are known as the Celestials) and sometimes not so different from ours (a very minor sub-plot involves an upcoming election that will have huge consequences for the country if it goes badly。) Specters are known to take the blood of Celestials in order to create their own powers or use it for a momentary gain。 For example, one of the scenes shows that people can drink the blood of an Illusionist in order to hallucinate and believe they have their own powers for an amount of time。Emil and his twin brother, Brighton, have spent their entire lives watching from afar as the Celestials saved the day time and time again, wishing they could both have their own powers and time in the spotlight。 Although they have had past family member's display certain powers or abilities, their parents have not and with the boys having passed the age where most show powers they have given up hope。 Emil has made peace with this-but his fame obsessed brother has not。 The day after an extremely powerful constellation awakens in the sky, The Crowned Dreamer, and a near-death experience on a subway, both boys are left questioning everything about their lives and their futures。 Because one of them does have a power。 But not the one who wants it。 And not one that should be possible。 I put off reading this book for over a year, even though I've really enjoyed this author's work before (HIAYLM is still one of the saddest experiences I've ever went through)。 I mainly put it off due to the criticism/general consensus when the first book was released。 And to be honest, I actually think going in knowing about the early reviews helped me。 Because I didn't hate it。 I think thats due to me going in with very low expectations though。 I know Adam was heavily inspired for this book after growing up reading City of Bones and watching X-Men and that was very apparent。 I think this is book was nostalgic for those reasons since I also grew up loving both of those。 I enjoyed Emil enough as a main character and the characters could have been flatter even if they all didn't fly off the page。 The pacing fell a little flat for me, just because I know this is a book that could have been longer and really made me FEEL not only like it could be real, but like I was scared。 I understand that this book is supposed to fast-paced and like it's all going so fast since that was the main character is feeling。 But any time I felt fear for the characters in this book I was never that scared for them, even when I should have been。 I think that's because I didn't feel like I was getting enough time with them to know them。 As far as what I did like, I did enjoy the snippets of world-building we got。 I liked the little ways that were shown what it was like to live in this world-such as explaining that when it came to film-making people still generally preferred to use CGI over someone's power since there was less risk involved。 I liked how many types of phoenixes there were and I really enjoyed the backstory of Emil and everything that had to do with infinity and reincarnation。 However, due to pacing issues, not getting to spend enough time with mostly anyone-hero or villain-and struggling to visualize some of the scenes (I enjoy the writing style of this author but admittedly it does suit contemporary better than fantasy) I'm settling on three stars。 I understand I'm in a pretty big reading slump so I can't totally blame the book for taking me three weeks but I stopped reading for a week when I was right at the climax at a point when I really should not have felt comfortable stopping-and for a week?? That does have me worried about how much of this book I'm even going to remember but regardless I felt weird giving it higher or lower, plus I am excited to read the sequel and see if the author did improve on the stuff I didn't like as some reviewers have said。 It already is obviously a bigger book so that alone should offer some pacing improvements。 Also, the very little of Emil and Ness that we got was cute。 I love any type of Mystique type power and any type of gay enemies-to-lovers trope so since Ness is serving both I'm looking forward most to him in the sequel。 。。。more

With this extra little twist on top of Silvera’s usual genre, I wasn’t fully sure what to expect。Of course I knew it’d be incredible writing with a stunning cast, but Infinity Son has blown my mind with how good it is!!If you’re a fan of Silvera’s work, you’ll know he always has stories full of characters that you can’t help but fall in love with and Infinity Son is no different。 The cast is beautifully diverse and there’s much more to each and every one of them than just “I’m a super hero/villa With this extra little twist on top of Silvera’s usual genre, I wasn’t fully sure what to expect。Of course I knew it’d be incredible writing with a stunning cast, but Infinity Son has blown my mind with how good it is!!If you’re a fan of Silvera’s work, you’ll know he always has stories full of characters that you can’t help but fall in love with and Infinity Son is no different。 The cast is beautifully diverse and there’s much more to each and every one of them than just “I’m a super hero/villain”。I can’t tell you how much I’ve loved every single Adam Silvera book and this one is definitely at the top of my list (along with What If It’s Us?)。Luckily, I already have the sequel sitting next to me because after that ending, I couldn’t imagine having to wait for it to be released! 。。。more

This book was a roller coaster for me。 While it starts by jumping right into the action, it kind of fell after about 100 or so pages。 Luckily, the low (for me) only lasted a few chapters。 I really like the character development throughout and felt like he did a great job describing everyone。 The only thing I thought was unnecessary, was the random “sexuality” pieces。 They didn’t really fit, in my opinion。 But that didn’t really make or break it for me。 The last 150 pages kept my interest and I r This book was a roller coaster for me。 While it starts by jumping right into the action, it kind of fell after about 100 or so pages。 Luckily, the low (for me) only lasted a few chapters。 I really like the character development throughout and felt like he did a great job describing everyone。 The only thing I thought was unnecessary, was the random “sexuality” pieces。 They didn’t really fit, in my opinion。 But that didn’t really make or break it for me。 The last 150 pages kept my interest and I really didn’t want to put it down。 No spoilers at all。 This just wasn’t my favorite Silvera book。 That being said, the cliffhanger ending definitely has me ready to pick up Infinity Reaper。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 SO, I know everyone pretty much hated this book, and I can see why。 It's tropey, includes numerous cliches and the ending was suspenseful。 Adam threw you into his world headfirst and information was grasped slowly, if at all。 However, I really liked it。 I love a fast-paced fantasy。 This book gave me fantastical creatures, romance, angst and a(n) annoying cliffhanger。 Once I learned what everything meant and what things were, I got lost in the book。 I read Infinity Reaper, too, and it was really SO, I know everyone pretty much hated this book, and I can see why。 It's tropey, includes numerous cliches and the ending was suspenseful。 Adam threw you into his world headfirst and information was grasped slowly, if at all。 However, I really liked it。 I love a fast-paced fantasy。 This book gave me fantastical creatures, romance, angst and a(n) annoying cliffhanger。 Once I learned what everything meant and what things were, I got lost in the book。 I read Infinity Reaper, too, and it was really good (with another cliffhanger- ugh。 I really need to talk to Adam Silvera about those) and I can't wait until Infinity #3 comes out。 Let's talk about the characters。Brighton is a jerk。Seriously, I hate him, and even more so after Reaper。 He's a self involved brat with no regard for anyone's feelings。 He's mean and so lost in himself that he doesn't even stop to consider that what he is doing may be wrong。 I can understand how he might have felt like he was doing the right thing- he'd be more equipped to save the world! But would you really sacrifice your life for your own selfish fantasies?? NO!!Emil is amazing。 He's so sweet and nice and I, too, would like to not kill anyone please。 His personality just feels so much more well developed than Brighton's (not that I'm complaining, Brighton sucks。) I hated the trope that "oh, because you're so special, you're adopted!" In EVERY SINGLE BOOK the kid finds out that they're adopted in their teenage years, and me, who's actually adopted, has known forever。 I don't know, it just ticks me off so much and I don't even know why。 Anyway, I still like Emil no matter how tropey he is。Let's talk about the plot。 At first, you are so confused。 ("what the heck are celestials?" "So this is supposed to be NEW YORK?" ect, ect。) things begin to make a little more sense later, but I still didn't understand the story until I reread it three times。 Let's talk about the world building。 So the story takes place an an au New York where there are three types of people- normal people, like me, Gleamcrafters (magic users) who go under two categories- Specters and celestials。 Specters are normal people who become gleamcrafters by drinking magical blood (which is disgusting, by the way)。 Celestials are born with minor magical powers such as telekinesis, super strength, power over nature, you know。 Emil is a smol boy living in this magical hell- *cough* scuse' me, WONDERLAND and he gets attacked on the subway (never go on a subway alone, kids)。 They he discovers- WOW! He has MAGICAL POWERS! Because that's the epic plot twist we all needed! I won't spoil the rest of the book for you, mostly because my fingers are sore from typing so much, but you should definitely read Infinity Son。 It's not for everyone, but it's a fantastical book you need to at least get a glimpse of, which I provided。 So, you're welcome。 。。。more

It was like the author wanted us to think it was the future but then had a kid running around with a camera and a phone uploading to Insta。 It was all wrong for me。 The pairing of mythical creatures, wizards, police running around with wands, and yet cars are the same, phones are the same, youtube is still amazing。 It again felt unbelievable as a world。 How could so much of one thing change, yet not another? I was really looking forward to this, do it's a shame it fell flat。 I don't think this genre suits the author and personally I'd leave out the sexuality for once。 Not everything in life revolves around sex and gender。 There are plenty of minorities under represented in literature, yet we do not see people rushing to shove them into every book。 Maybe people would be more tolerant if they t wasn't made the focus of everything? So basically, you wanna write fantasy, then get it right as this falls off the mark。 Sorry。 。。。more

This was more like a 3。5 for me。 I love Adam Silvera’s work, I just don’t think this was for me。 I enjoyed it more than I expected because I’m not a huge fantasy reader。 However, one of my least favorite book tropes is where people are being traded back and forth nonstop and being hurt nonstop。 It feels unrealistic to me。 Then again this is fantasy so I can’t exactly complain about that。 Overall, still good。 Not my favorite。 Good concept。

1。5There are some really interesting fantasy ideas here, unfortunately, the plot sucks。 The action scenes are very Meh, and in a superhero kind of book。。。 That's not a good sign。Brighton is The Lost Brother of Tarryn and Mal, and while Emil started kinda nice, the more we had of him the less likable he was。Every character had some kind of a sob story, but it didnt make them memorable at all。 After reading this whole book i could not care about any of them - heroes and villains all alike。The Dram 1。5There are some really interesting fantasy ideas here, unfortunately, the plot sucks。 The action scenes are very Meh, and in a superhero kind of book。。。 That's not a good sign。Brighton is The Lost Brother of Tarryn and Mal, and while Emil started kinda nice, the more we had of him the less likable he was。Every character had some kind of a sob story, but it didnt make them memorable at all。 After reading this whole book i could not care about any of them - heroes and villains all alike。The Dramatic Reveals were laughable and written very poorly。 Can someone explain why i havent noticed the bad reviews until i bought the book and started reading it? 。。。more
