Summary

He’s fallen for a woman…

Anxious to meet her soon-to-be-husband, Dallas Leigh for the first time, mail-order bride Amelia Carson is en route to Fort Worth, Texas。 When she steps off the train and locks eyes with her betrothed, she immediately feels drawn to him。 But the cowboy standing before her isn’t Dallas。 Instead, Dallas’ brother Houston has been sent to accompany her on the three-week journey to the ranch where she’ll begin her new life。

Who belongs to another。。。

The war Houston Leigh fought has left him with visible scars, a daily reminder of his cowardice on the battlefield。 Denying his intense attraction to Amelia, he is determined to deliver her untouched, as promised。 But during their long dangerous trip, he can’t help but admire her inner strength and fearlessness。 And when she looks at him—as if she can see beyond his scarred face and read his innermost thoughts—he loses his heart to her。 Now as they near the ranch, Houston must choose to remain loyal to his brother—or find the courage to fight for the woman he’s convinced is his destiny。。。

tortured hero done perfectly right。 this was so tender i cried through most of it。 him pushing amelia away actually made sense and wasn't overly drawn out considering she was betrothed to his brother。 just sublime。 tortured hero done perfectly right。 this was so tender i cried through most of it。 him pushing amelia away actually made sense and wasn't overly drawn out considering she was betrothed to his brother。 just sublime。 。。。more

I am not sure how I was able to come across this book, or who recommended this book。 But I must first say this: This novel is dark! Nay, I think it is more heartbreaking。 Heartbreaking in the sense that our main characters went through and experienced so very dark moments。 And then you add their dire situation with the timeline, setting, and all。 I hate to say that some parts sort of got me traumatized。 Although I have to commend the author that they were narrated in a fade-to-black manner but r I am not sure how I was able to come across this book, or who recommended this book。 But I must first say this: This novel is dark! I am a huge Lorraine Heath fan but this book wasn't for me。 Maybe it was the descriptive writing or the slow burn romance。 Or maybe I like historical romances with dukes and marquesses and the critical eye of the British social hierarchy。 I was hoping I would like this book because it seemed like a good forbidden romance。 I am a huge Lorraine Heath fan but this book wasn't for me。 Maybe it was the descriptive writing or the slow burn romance。 Or maybe I like historical romances with dukes and marquesses and the critical eye of the British social hierarchy。 I was hoping I would like this book because it seemed like a good forbidden romance。 。。。more

This was a great western novel。 I think that it ticked all tropey boxes within the Western Romance genre。 However, there was something about it that couldn't make me get into it like others。 Idk what it is。 Maybe it was the characters? Houston felt a bit underdeveloped as a character? Or maybe her? Or maybe it was because the better part of the story they were traveling, and like, not IN a western town? Idk, but that being said, It is still a great western romance。 This was a great western novel。 I think that it ticked all tropey boxes within the Western Romance genre。 However, there was something about it that couldn't make me get into it like others。 Idk what it is。 Maybe it was the characters? My first Lorraine Heath and I liked it。 I love pioneer/Old West stories with a mail order bride trope, so this was right up my alley。I was also so glad that Dallas didn’t turn out to be a villain。 I was slightly annoyed by how long it took to resolve everything。 It was almost the very last page before our couple admitted their feelings。 That’s why it’s not getting five stars。 Still, it was an enjoyable reading experience。

Recommended to me as part of my #bHeath21 read, this was a bit out of my comfort zone as an American Historical set post-Civil War。 I wasn't aware before reading it (or at least didn't think through it), but the hero and heroine were both living in the Confederacy as children during the Civil War, and are dealing with PTSD ten years after。 That said, the only mention of slavery is that the heroine lived in the slave quarters after her family's plantation was taken over during the war。Also, big C Recommended to me as part of my #bHeath21 read, this was a bit out of my comfort zone as an American Historical set post-Civil War。 I wasn't aware before reading it (or at least didn't think through it), but the hero and heroine were both living in the Confederacy as children during the Civil War, and are dealing with PTSD ten years after。 That said, the only mention of slavery is that the heroine lived in the slave quarters after her family's plantation was taken over during the war。Also, big CWs for PTSD, grief, trauma, rape (off-page, heroine's mother and sisters were raped while she was hidden), snake bite, scary nature situationsThe relationship between Houston and his brother's intended mail order bride is quite epic。 Houston is sent to retrieve Amelia after his brother breaks his leg, Houston is grumpy and mad and afraid she'll be afraid of his scars and his eyepatch。 He refuses to wear the floral embroidered ribbon she sent for the hat his brother was supposed to wear so she could find him at the train。I loved the road trip aspect of this story, and watching these two bozos fall completely in love with each other along the way。 Houston watching her bathe through the tent, how naughty!I was not sure how Heath would wrap this one up, especially since Amelia does indeed marry the brother!! but then gets it annulled。Lots to unpack here, but for more notes check out my twitter thread。 。。。more

A nostalgic read, so many feels。 The proposal at the end is so sweet, being so true to his gruff introvert guilt ridden "not good with words" persona and her stoic survivalist ways。 The scene with the moth shadow in the tent was so understatedly erotic, and the aftermath, where she takes her power back, just wow。 And he celebrates her courage, what a perfect hero。 Good old days when people did what it took to survive in the wild west and held core values paramount as they relied on each other fo A nostalgic read, so many feels。 The proposal at the end is so sweet, being so true to his gruff introvert guilt ridden "not good with words" persona and her stoic survivalist ways。 The scene with the moth shadow in the tent was so understatedly erotic, and the aftermath, where she takes her power back, just wow。 And he celebrates her courage, what a perfect hero。 Good old days when people did what it took to survive in the wild west and held core values paramount as they relied on each other for survival - loyalty, hospitality, family and friendships。 。。。more

This was a sweet, angsty romance。I enjoyed listing to the audiobook while working。It doesn't have much steam to speak of, but the romance was pretty beautiful。I just can't give it more than 3 stars though, because if I wasn't reading for book club, I may have DNFd。 Thankfully it was a fast listen。 This was a sweet, angsty romance。I enjoyed listing to the audiobook while working。It doesn't have much steam to speak of, but the romance was pretty beautiful。I just can't give it more than 3 stars though, because if I wasn't reading for book club, I may have DNFd。 Thankfully it was a fast listen。 。。。more

This book was sweet。 I love these kind of love stories that take place in the old west and involve them traveling over the tough terrain to get to their destination。 And they’re alone and end up falling in love along the way。 I love the old west rolling prairies ambiance。 And he was escorting her to his brother to be married。 And he’s physically and emotionally scarred from the civil war and thinks he is unworthy of her。 Such a good and sweet story。

It was a good story that kept me wanting to know what was going to happen。 I wished the characters had been a bit more developed and the plot not so rushed。

This was better than I expected。 Even though I don't enjoy much when a story takes place in a journey or a love triangle, this one was nice。 I was disappointed with Houston that it took him waaaay too long to act。 But I understand his insecurities and point of view。 This was better than I expected。 Even though I don't enjoy much when a story takes place in a journey or a love triangle, this one was nice。 I was disappointed with Houston that it took him waaaay too long to act。 But I understand his insecurities and point of view。 。。。more

Loved the setting & the wild road trip adventure between Amelia and Houston。 They hit every obstacle possible- raccoon, snakes, lightening storm, river surge。 I legit cackled though when Amelia runs into the storm with her arms flailing bc she’s scared。 I could not rate this higher bc of Amelia’s love of the plantation she grew up on in Georgia。 She explains how shamed she was to move into the “slave quarters” when the Union won。 But she’s not ashamed that her family enslaved humans??? A fine average romance book。 My biggest issue was how it glossed over why the civil war occurred in the first place。 The heroine grew up on a plantation so I saw no excuse why slavery never came up。 I get it's not the main plot of the book but effects of the civil war was a driving plot point in the book。 White or not。 Something good did come out of this book for me though。 I discovered Beverly Jenkins。 This book had me searching for other voices and stories。 So if you want some good historical A fine average romance book。 My biggest issue was how it glossed over why the civil war occurred in the first place。 The heroine grew up on a plantation so I saw no excuse why slavery never came up。 I get it's not the main plot of the book but effects of the civil war was a driving plot point in the book。 White or not。 Something good did come out of this book for me though。 I discovered Beverly Jenkins。 This book had me searching for other voices and stories。 So if you want some good historical romance books, skip Lorraine Heath altogether。 。。。more
