Summary

Mine has been a life of much shame。 I can't even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being。
Plagued by a maddening anxiety, the terrible disconnect between his own concept of happiness and the joy of the rest of the world, Yozo Oba plays the clown in his dissolute life, holding up a mask for those around him as he spirals ever downward, locked arm-in-arm with death。
Osamu Dazai's immortal and supposedly autobiographical work of Japanese literature, is perfectly adapted here into a manga。 The imagery wrenches open the text of the novel one line at a time to sublimate Yozo's mental landscape into something even more delicate and grotesque。 This is the ultimate in art by Ito, proof that nothing can surpass the terror of the human psyche。

i don’t feel like i can rate this book and i definitely can’t review it。 also please don’t read this book unless you’re 18 and very mentally stable, i mean that in the most honest way possible。oh and i’ve seen a bunch of reviews where people are like “this is nothing like ito’s usual work” because of the content, so i just wanted to say; it’s not ito’s original story。 he adapted it from osamu dazai’s novel under the same title (no longer human) which is literally a memoir about his life。 please i don’t feel like i can rate this book and i definitely can’t review it。 also please don’t read this book unless you’re 18 and very mentally stable, i mean that in the most honest way possible。oh and i’ve seen a bunch of reviews where people are like “this is nothing like ito’s usual work” because of the content, so i just wanted to say; it’s not ito’s original story。 he adapted it from osamu dazai’s novel under the same title (no longer human) which is literally a memoir about his life。 please don’t think this is a work of fiction, it’s about a real person’s life。 。。。more

Junji Ito's adaptation of the novel with the same title。 That was great! I think I enjoy as much as the original novel。 Strange story of a man not belonging in the world and trying hard to find his place。 A story of madness, isolation, mental health, alcohol/drug abuse and lot of sex too。 It was good, it was weird, graphic, it was Junji Ito's works。 I love the book, I love this artist and at this point I will read everything from him, like Jeff Lemire in the comic book world! Not my favorite work by Junji Ito, but not my least favorite either。 I haven't read the original source material, so I can't attest to how faithful of an adaptation this is。 That being said, it's a pretty solid manga (in my opinion)。 Not my favorite work by Junji Ito, but not my least favorite either。 I haven't read the original source material, so I can't attest to how faithful of an adaptation this is。 That being said, it's a pretty solid manga (in my opinion)。 。。。more

I am a lover of Junji Ito's works but sadly I can not recommend this book。 Although the artwork is amazing and captivating, the actual story was a big let down。 I am a lover of Junji Ito's works but sadly I can not recommend this book。 Although the artwork is amazing and captivating, the actual story was a big let down。 。。。more

What a depressing story。 From start to finish it is a complete downward spiral, and I mean this in the best way possible。 I couldn't stop reading! These kinds of grimdark stories aren't usually my cup of tea, but I highly recommend reading this to anyone who can stomach that sort of thing。 What a depressing story。 From start to finish it is a complete downward spiral, and I mean this in the best way possible。 I couldn't stop reading! Shocking, disturbing and just an amazing piece of horror writing。 The story was like a punch to the gut but that along with Ito’s images really left me reeling。 This book definitely made an impression on me that will no doubt linger。。。

Wow, I read this book in one sitting。 I couldn't put it down, regardless of how I was definitely freaked out。 Due to mature themes, violence, nudity - this is an Adult only graphic novel。 This is the third book that I have read from Junji Ito, and what a read。There are aspects that I wonder。 Ito portrays Oba as having a great deal of hate toward humans and society, and it also reflects an aspect of loathing toward females。 There is also a good deal of karma or luck in this story。 You have to eit Wow, I read this book in one sitting。 I couldn't put it down, regardless of how I was definitely freaked out。 Due to mature themes, violence, nudity - this is an Adult only graphic novel。 This is the third book that I have read from Junji Ito, and what a read。There are aspects that I wonder。 Ito portrays Oba as having a great deal of hate toward humans and society, and it also reflects an aspect of loathing toward females。 There is also a good deal of karma or luck in this story。 You have to either wonder what bad luck he has, but you would also have to question his entitled motivation。 This book is not meant people who would think this is just a simple manga, but is a horror story that proves Ito's command of his craft and genre。 。。。more

Junji Ito beautifully captured the intensity of the original work。 He really expressed the work of Dazai in an amazing way while also incorporating his style。 This manga version really personifies the dark side of mental health people who don't suffer from mental illness would be able to see。 This manga is very difficult to read in one sitting, but it was a very powerful piece overall。 Junji Ito beautifully captured the intensity of the original work。 He really expressed the work of Dazai in an amazing way while also incorporating his style。 This manga version really personifies the dark side of mental health people who don't suffer from mental illness would be able to see。 This manga is very difficult to read in one sitting, but it was a very powerful piece overall。 。。。more

okay, so i've just have a mixed-feelings after reading this。 ga perlu diraguin lagi lah ya artworknya junji ito mah bintang lima udah~tw kalo mau baca: rape, drugs, alcohol, verbal-abuse, death, suicide, murder。jd ini nyeritain yozo oba yang dr kecil udh dapet pressure, dia seneng ngasih pleasure ke org lain dgn cara ngelucu pdhl dia tuh capek begitu terus。 yes, dia ngefake-in diri sendiri。 selain itu, dia begitu jg krn tuntutan ayahnya yg selalu harus sempurna。 terus sedihnya pas kecil dia jg u okay, so i've just have a mixed-feelings after reading this。 ga perlu diraguin lagi lah ya artworknya junji ito mah bintang lima udah~tw kalo mau baca: rape, drugs, alcohol, verbal-abuse, death, suicide, murder。jd ini nyeritain yozo oba yang dr kecil udh dapet pressure, dia seneng ngasih pleasure ke org lain dgn cara ngelucu pdhl dia tuh capek begitu terus。 yes, dia ngefake-in diri sendiri。 selain itu, dia begitu jg krn tuntutan ayahnya yg selalu harus sempurna。 terus sedihnya pas kecil dia jg udh dapet forced-rape dari pembantu cewek n cowoknya, hIH KESEL BGT GW。 btw di sini jg dia dibayang2in sm temennya yg suicide krn ulah dia。sampe dia udh gede hidupnya tuh jadi ga karuan deh。 tapi oba tuh suka ngelukis cuma ayahnya nentang bgt krn kek dibilang ngapain sih lo jadi penulis org bayarannya juga dikit, ga sejahtera。 tapi dia tetep nyalurin kegelisahannya lewat lukisan itu。 nah, kehidupan oba gede tuh udah kacau deh dibilang mah; gonta ganti cewek, boong, mabok2an。nah, pas udh menjelang akhir, akhirnya dia dimasukin rsj gitu dan ketemu sm osamu dazai。 dan gue pikir di sini dia tuh doppelgängernya sih, alias kl di kehidupan nyata itu osamu tapi osamu masukin dirinya as cameo di sini。 dua2nya berakhir mengenaskan sih menurut gue。 kalo osamunya di awal, kalo obanya di akhir~i have no thought sih buat ini krn。。。。 haduh, bingung。 alurnya sebenernya oke, gambaran depresinya juga ualah juarak! dan sampe ada scene tokoh obanya seneng pun gue ga kebawa seneng。 dari awal gue pikir kita, pembaca, udh digiring ke arah "dark"nya。 dan bisa berenti kalo lo ya selesai baca, meskipun gue masih hilang akal jg sih sekarang。 HAHAHAH。somehow junji ito karya2nya addicting parah, gue gapernah mau berenti di tengah2。 selalu harus selesai。 duh, nanti kalo udh ga hangover gue nulis review yg proper deh, yak。 yaudah, kalo lo lg ga baik2 aja jangan baca ini, deh。 ✌🏼 。。。more

I really like the concept of “let’s take this classic piece of depression literature but turn it into a horror manga” and I can think of no one better than Junji Ito to get it done。

cw// sexual violence, pedophilia waaaay too much sexual abuse for my taste (aka any is too much, also, why illustrate the child molestation my dude? that was not a good call, like Yes it was horrifying, but i visualized you drawing it and that was gross as hell, so not the horror i was going for there)。 while titties are great, i wish there were more variety in body types for women, and goddamn Ito, you couldn't give a single one of these women an ass? rude。 flat asses, all of them。 if you're go cw// sexual violence, pedophilia waaaay too much sexual abuse for my taste (aka any is too much, also, why illustrate the child molestation my dude? that was not a good call, like Yes it was horrifying, but i visualized you drawing it and that was gross as hell, so not the horror i was going for there)。 while titties are great, i wish there were more variety in body types for women, and goddamn Ito, you couldn't give a single one of these women an ass? rude。 flat asses, all of them。 if you're gonna illustrate a softcore porn, you gotta include some ass, my dude。there were some interesting elements, but in terms of horror stories based around romantic relationships, Ito's Tomie is better by far。 。。。more

I love Junji Ito's art style; he's the best horror mangaka I know。 I also love Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human, BUT I wouldn't say I liked this manga adaptation。 It made Yozo seem like an absolute dick, and there are many changes in the storyline (which is I'm not a fan of)。 I love, hate, and sympathize with Yozo in the novel, but in the manga, I loathe him, and I don't want to feel that way because I care for Yozo。 (I know it sounds stupid, lol) I love Junji Ito's art style; he's the best horror mangaka I know。 I also love Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human, BUT I wouldn't say I liked this manga adaptation。 It made Yozo seem like an absolute dick, and there are many changes in the storyline (which is I'm not a fan of)。 I love, hate, and sympathize with Yozo in the novel, but in the manga, I loathe him, and I don't want to feel that way because I care for Yozo。 (I know it sounds stupid, lol) 。。。more

Almost unbearably tragic and gorgeously drawn, Junji Ito conquers a daunting tale of a doomed trajectory as it strikes through the lives of others。 His artistry is so detailed the eye can drown between the pages, and the imagery is so grim it can haunt you like Yozo’s own sins。 I hope the original author found peace, and I hope he understood that his work would endure。

2。5✨ to say this was a struggle to get through would be an understatement。 I had not the best vibes from the very beginning but I had to finish it in the hopes it got better。

So far in my exploration of bleak and depressing manga, this story takes first prize。 Still, it transcends the horror, depravity, and sheer tragedy of its contents to deliver something that is somehow both exquisitely beautiful and enlightening。

Such a terrible ending。。

An ambitious, heart felt tribute to the original author's story reimagined in typical Ito fasion。 The ending hit very close to home。 It's very sereal and has a way of making you think of your own family。 But to say it is Ito's "Best" work is both an over and an understatement。 This is not an Ito story。 It's something far greater and much more sad。 An ambitious, heart felt tribute to the original author's story reimagined in typical Ito fasion。 The ending hit very close to home。 It's very sereal and has a way of making you think of your own family。 But to say it is Ito's "Best" work is both an over and an understatement。 This is not an Ito story。 It's something far greater and much more sad。 。。。more

No Longer Human 。。。 is a horror show of "human" doings。Introduced by the total maniac Junji Ito, who succeeded to combine his disturbing artwork into a story of monstrous doings, horrible doings, people's doings 。。。 Delivering the unnatural, the worst and ugliness of dreadful doings。But I didn't like when he's supporting his storytelling with reasons, they weren't reasonable, at least they didn't feel like it, cause many times I felt there was that piece 。。。 missing。And for me, it made me unatta No Longer Human 。。。 is a horror show of "human" doings。Introduced by the total maniac Junji Ito, who succeeded to combine his disturbing artwork into a story of monstrous doings, horrible doings, people's doings 。。。 Delivering the unnatural, the worst and ugliness of dreadful doings。But I didn't like when he's supporting his storytelling with reasons, they weren't reasonable, at least they didn't feel like it, cause many times I felt there was that piece 。。。 missing。And for me, it made me unattached to the story。 My guess, it could've been better, but it's good。 。。。more

I didn’t rate this because it’s difficult to rate an adaptation when I haven’t read the original but like wow this was junji ito going “you think my other shit is scary what’s really fucking scary is the human mind” and honestly I agree , I thought the vulgarity really added to the horror and manga was the perfect format for this story
