Actually reading the lyrics instead of just listening to them, truly made me overthink alot of the themes an Florence and the Machine songs。 Also, the poems in the end are beautiful。

i could have florence welch's poetry for breakfast every day and id never get bored, which i somehow cant say about her lyrics? its starting to feel like meter and rhyme hold her back rather than set her free, at least lyrically。 fav poems: song continued, new york poem (for polly), monarch butterflies, oh you're a real man, i cannot write about this i could have florence welch's poetry for breakfast every day and id never get bored, which i somehow cant say about her lyrics? its starting to feel like meter and rhyme hold her back rather than set her free, at least lyrically。 fav poems: song continued, new york poem (for polly), monarch butterflies, oh you're a real man, i cannot write about this 。。。more

Obviously I loved this! The art throughout was so beautiful and fit the lyrics perfectly。 The poems and sermons captured little moments and emotions really wonderfully in my opinion and gave a different perspective from the more grand lyrics。My favourite poems were: Song Continued, Monarch Butterflies, American Mother, Lochgilphead, I Guess I Won't Write Poetry and This Poem Is Not Good Enough。I will definitely be returning to this many times in the future。 Obviously I loved this! The art throughout was so beautiful and fit the lyrics perfectly。 The poems and sermons captured little moments and emotions really wonderfully in my opinion and gave a different perspective from the more grand lyrics。My favourite poems were: Song Continued, Monarch Butterflies, American Mother, Lochgilphead, I Guess I Won't Write Poetry and This Poem Is Not Good Enough。I will definitely be returning to this many times in the future。 。。。more

。。。more

Florence definitely has a way with words that's unlike anyone else。 To paraphrase what she once said: "I haven't received classic music education, so everything I write is a big crescendo。" However, I wish we'd seen more of her original poetry in the book, rather than lyrics (although they absolutely *are* poetry)。 Florence definitely has a way with words that's unlike anyone else。 To paraphrase what she once said: "I haven't received classic music education, so everything I write is a big crescendo。" However, I wish we'd seen more of her original poetry in the book, rather than lyrics (although they absolutely *are* poetry)。 。。。more

But then again, if someone were so clueless about what this book is that they didn’t know it’s already published content, then the lyrics are new to them; so the only unfortunate audience would be the Florence fan who assumed this was all new content。。。which I did when it first came out, I think。 Gosh, why did I wait so long to get this book? The expense? The post High as Hope Florence slump? The disinterest in celebrity poetry? Useless Magic is a book first and foremost for Florence’s fans。 So it’s a book FOR ME。 Why did I wait years? And I’ve long wanted exactly this kind of product from my favorite singers, so I just simply can’t complain that the majority of the poems have been out there to read for free online for years。 Especially when the quality of the lyrics is so high, as is the artistry of this book。Florence’s blend of imagery and atmosphere is fiercely and viscerally blended into cohesive, digestible verse, often haunting or touching or mystifying。 They rage with literature。 They are minimal in ego-stroking。 And they are already ground into my mind from 7 years as a fan。It’s hard to judge the lyrics as poems because that’s not what they’re written as。 On top of that, this is 9 years of songwriting, all in one odyssey of a volume。So it’s tough to “fairly” judge this book critically。I noticed some seemingly random and inconsistent deletions from the lyrics。。。that’s not a criticism, just a curiosity。 I guess they are minor edits? It’s just that there aren’t other places it would have made sense to apply the same edits, so idk, it just feels inconsistent。Some illustrations are goofy and a little disposable or even, dare I say, lazy。It feels weird to praise the book for art and photos and maps etc that aren’t Florence’s creation。 They build the aesthetics terrifically, but ultimately make this book feel less hers, or more like a public collage。I prefer the narrative pieces over the lyric ones。Lungs is eclectic, descriptive, and full of world building。 Ceremonials is torrential and epic and darkly religious。 HBHBHB is confessional and raw, and full of healing, and also my least favorite (lyrically) because it feels the often to operate in the abstract。 High as Hope is graceful, nostalgic and the most poetic。 The thread that holds the albums together is strong and powerful。The section of new poems at the end are a mix of successes and misses, carrying the book’s cringiest content。 I wouldn’t have loved a collection of just this。 The poems are a little too focused on the self, and that’s not a Florence thing, just a genre thing。 I don’t want to conceal the fact that a few of the them are awesome and offer fresh autobiographical glimpses, and particularly fresh are those that discuss her relationship with music。I cannot wait to see where Florence will take her career next。 It seems this book has proved to signal a long pause。 I don’t know whether she’s taking this pause in preparation for a big splash with album 5 or simply for a break。 Could be a mix of both。 The fact of the matter is that I’m all ears (or eyes or whatever’s required) for Florence’s next era, and I’m glad to have albums 1-4 collected so beautifully in this book。 。。。more

the most beautiful book ive ever laid hands and eyes on。 special in every way, from the ridiculously good poetry, to the excellent and cohesive aesthetic, to the incredibly personal nature of every poem and word。 no one else in the music industry compares to florence and her ability to depict life, love, art, darkness and struggle in such a charming, eloquent, grand and powerful way。 you can see her writing change over the past 12ish years, somehow becoming more raw, open and daring with time’s the most beautiful book ive ever laid hands and eyes on。 special in every way, from the ridiculously good poetry, to the excellent and cohesive aesthetic, to the incredibly personal nature of every poem and word。 no one else in the music industry compares to florence and her ability to depict life, love, art, darkness and struggle in such a charming, eloquent, grand and powerful way。 you can see her writing change over the past 12ish years, somehow becoming more raw, open and daring with time’s passing。thank you florence, you’re one of the best artists we’ve ever been graced with 💙 。。。more

I actually really adored the scrapbook layout。 I am in constant awe of Florence Welch and her ability to articulate powerful emotions and vulnerability through song so of course I loved a book filled with her lyrics and poetry。 The artwork fluctuated between renaissance to witchy/mystical which spoke to my heart。 Overall, I loved the book aesthetic and Florence’s natural way with words。

Useless Magic je zbierka textov piesní a básní speváčky Florence Welch z Florence and the Machine。 O písaní textov k piesňam a celkovo o tvorení hudby nič neviem。 Niektoré texty sa mi zdali málo rozvinuté, verše sa často opakovali a čítanie potom veľmi unavovalo。 No keď prišla na rad poézia。。。 wow。 Bola to pastva pre oči。 Aj keby autorka neoddelila texty a poéziu tak okato, vedeli by ste povedali čo je čo。Texty veľmi pekne doplňovali fotky a rôzne zápisky až to celé pripomínalo nejaký denník / z Useless Magic je zbierka textov piesní a básní speváčky Florence Welch z Florence and the Machine。 O písaní textov k piesňam a celkovo o tvorení hudby nič neviem。 Niektoré texty sa mi zdali málo rozvinuté, verše sa často opakovali a čítanie potom veľmi unavovalo。 No keď prišla na rad poézia。。。 wow。 Bola to pastva pre oči。 Aj keby autorka neoddelila texty a poéziu tak okato, vedeli by ste povedali čo je čo。Texty veľmi pekne doplňovali fotky a rôzne zápisky až to celé pripomínalo nejaký denník / zápisník。 。。。more

I wanted to like this book, and while I did enjoy the artwork and notes scattered throughout, at the end of the day it’s simply a collection of Florence + the Machine lyrics from each studio album - the same thing you can find in any CD booklet or by doing a Google search。 I think I expect some exclusive content - stories about her inspiration or poems she didn’t quite turn into songs。 I expected something original, and while there are a few new pieces toward the end, it’s mostly her albums boun I wanted to like this book, and while I did enjoy the artwork and notes scattered throughout, at the end of the day it’s simply a collection of Florence + the Machine lyrics from each studio album - the same thing you can find in any CD booklet or by doing a Google search。 I think I expect some exclusive content - stories about her inspiration or poems she didn’t quite turn into songs。 I expected something original, and while there are a few new pieces toward the end, it’s mostly her albums bound together with a pretty cover。 I adore Florence Welch as an artist, but this book feels like a grab for money。 Perhaps fun for a super fan, but I personally felt cheated。 。。。more

Florence is a poet and she knows it。 The majority of the book in lyrics from the albums with drawings, art and handwritten entries in between, which are all lovely to look at。 The last part is poetry。 I liked all the poems and am glad they didn't all use the same rhyming structure。 Some felt very deep like a struggle and some felt written in a fleeting moment, something captured。I'd definitely recommend to fans of Florence and the Machine in particular。 Florence is a poet and she knows it。 The majority of the book in lyrics from the albums with drawings, art and handwritten entries in between, which are all lovely to look at。 The last part is poetry。 I liked all the poems and am glad they didn't all use the same rhyming structure。 Some felt very deep like a struggle and some felt written in a fleeting moment, something captured。I'd definitely recommend to fans of Florence and the Machine in particular。 。。。more

Absolutely adore this。 Apart from the new poetry and the sermons, reading the lyrics as poetry has given me a new perspective on some of the songs。 It's also a stunningly beautiful book and I'm sure I'll return to browse it a lot。 Absolutely adore this。 Apart from the new poetry and the sermons, reading the lyrics as poetry has given me a new perspective on some of the songs。 It's also a stunningly beautiful book and I'm sure I'll return to browse it a lot。 。。。more
