Summary

To most of us, learning something "the hard way" implies wasted time and effort。 Good teaching, we believe, should be creatively tailored to the different learning styles of students and should use strategies that make learning easier。 Make It Stick turns fashionable ideas like these on their head。 Drawing on recent discoveries in cognitive psychology and other disciplines, the authors offer concrete techniques for becoming more productive learners。

Memory plays a central role in our ability to carry out complex cognitive tasks, such as applying knowledge to problems never before encountered and drawing inferences from facts already known。 New insights into how memory is encoded, consolidated, and later retrieved have led to a better understanding of how we learn。 Grappling with the impediments that make learning challenging leads both to more complex mastery and better retention of what was learned。

Many common study habits and practice routines turn out to be counterproductive。 Underlining and highlighting, rereading, cramming, and single-minded repetition of new skills create the illusion of mastery, but gains fade quickly。 More complex and durable learning come from self-testing, introducing certain difficulties in practice, waiting to re-study new material until a little forgetting has set in, and interleaving the practice of one skill or topic with another。 Speaking most urgently to students, teachers, trainers, and athletes, Make It Stick will appeal to all those interested in the challenge of lifelong learning and self-improvement。

I don't see people doing that where I live。 。。。more

2 stars literally bc of the small section that actually contained advice。 You want my advice? Watch 1 YouTube video on the benefits of active recall+spaced repetition and learn the exact same amount as I did in this book。 No joke。 I have never read to a self help book with this many unnecessary examples and explanation on the “what” or “why” of a specific concept。 It just felt so ridiculous to listen about learning the complexity of flying a plane for like 25 minutes on 1。5x speed。。。 I was like 2 stars literally bc of the small section that actually contained advice。 You want my advice? I wish that I had read this book before I started my undergraduate education。 I only discovered many of the strategies in this book towards the end of my time in college, and I gained insight into several of them solely through this book。 I look forward to using recall, reflection, calibration, etc。 to further my education/understanding in my personal studies as well as when I start law school。 The way that the authors blended the cited studies with storytelling and thorough explanations was gre I wish that I had read this book before I started my undergraduate education。 I only discovered many of the strategies in this book towards the end of my time in college, and I gained insight into several of them solely through this book。 I look forward to using recall, reflection, calibration, etc。 to further my education/understanding in my personal studies as well as when I start law school。 The way that the authors blended the cited studies with storytelling and thorough explanations was great。 I'm a big fan of this book and hope to be able to study it a bit more in the future to further cement its lessons in my mind。 。。。more

Make it stick is a book by Peter C。 Brown, Henry L。 Roediger III, Mark A。 McDaniel。 It is a book that presents the science behind successful learning。Let me start this (short) review by saying that this book will not teach you to learn faster, but rather learn better。Personally, if you are like me, and read a lot about productivity and learning, you are probably familiar with most of the terms discussed in this book (such as active recall, spaced repetition, interleaved practice, etc。), and even Make it stick is a book by Peter C。 Brown, Henry L。 Roediger III, Mark A。 McDaniel。 It is a book that presents the science behind successful learning。Let me start this (short) review by saying that this book will not teach you to learn faster, but rather learn better。Personally, if you are like me, and read a lot about productivity and learning, you are probably familiar with most of the terms discussed in this book (such as active recall, spaced repetition, interleaved practice, etc。), and even if you do, I would still recommend that you read this title, since you, most likely, will learn something new。I found this book rather long for what it is worth。 Like most people say, chapter 1 through 7 just presents the actual scientific work that is mentioned in the book, while chapter 8 (the last one) is where the most useful content is。If you are like me that really cares about the science behind successful learning, then I would suggest you read the whole book。 But, if you are only here for the techniques, then just read chapter 8。Overall, a fairly entertaining book。 。。。more

Includes some interesting information on interleaving information, the testing effect, the spacing effect, the generation effect, and the illusion of mastery, which is one of those cognitive biases I think more people should be aware of。 It gets a little slow towards the end, but it's still a good read。 Includes some interesting information on interleaving information, the testing effect, the spacing effect, the generation effect, and the illusion of mastery, which is one of those cognitive biases I think more people should be aware of。 It gets a little slow towards the end, but it's still a good read。 。。。more

Read this in audiobook format, and it would have been possible to do it in a podcast instead, but they went into detail about the research used to support the theories, which made it very long。

Exceptionally practical and imminently useful in my own life。 I found the stories engaging, and the general structure of the book flowed well。 I would recommend this book to anyone at any stage in life。

"For Students" part in the last chapter summarises everything。 So someone not having enough time can benefit only from reading this part。 But to get the most value from this book you should read the book with a pen and a paper。 "For Students" part in the last chapter summarises everything。 So someone not having enough time can benefit only from reading this part。 But to get the most value from this book you should read the book with a pen and a paper。 。。。more

Indeed this book has explained basic yet crucial steps and aspects of learning, in which the real learning are the moment when we use our long term memory。 This book is something in which the real learners, students with grit, are going to love。

A book that will teatch you some great tips, but also makes unstand with exemples, interview why and how they work。 Must read for learners and teachers。

I could have used an abridged version of this。 The first 3 chapters sucked me in, then the author completely lost me, then I was brought back in again。 I appreciated the science but could have done without some of the stories that didn't quite fit for me。 I could have used an abridged version of this。 The first 3 chapters sucked me in, then the author completely lost me, then I was brought back in again。 I appreciated the science but could have done without some of the stories that didn't quite fit for me。 。。。more

My only wish is that I read this sooner。 The theories in this book do not just apply to studying but to anything and everything that involves learning。 It presents a data, science, and empirical based approach on learning and what it really takes to “make it stick。” The way it was written follows what it teaches。 Highly recommended。

Had to read this book after the recommendation from Dr。 Ali Abdaal。 It is a good book and yes I do not agree with all the points covered on how to learn and absorb material。 One of those is interleaving。 It's a very difficult task to do when you are reading you are in a flow state to absorb the material and the recommended tactic is to leave the topic and jump to something else。 It may work but I'm not going to experiment with it。Also most of the tactics have been mentioned in many websites like Had to read this book after the recommendation from Dr。 Ali Abdaal。 It is a good book and yes I do not agree with all the points covered on how to learn and absorb material。 One of those is interleaving。 It's a very difficult task to do when you are reading you are in a flow state to absorb the material and the recommended tactic is to leave the topic and jump to something else。 It may work but I'm not going to experiment with it。Also most of the tactics have been mentioned in many websites like testing, spaced repetition。Of course some of the strategies were presented in a novel way like generation, reflection and elaboration。 They were some which were somewhat new to me。 All in all the biggest takeaway was to engage in active recall while reading。The biggest shockers were note taking and highlighting are ineffective ways to learn。I would still rate it high just because it was a good elaboration of what I knew or perhaps I had been too confident of knowing them。( Cognitive biases we all have them, can't help it😜) 。。。more

I'm not a student, but I found this book helpful。 A big chunk of the content I was already familiar with, but there were new lightbulp moments too。 Comes recommened。 Probably closer to 5 stars for students, since much of the content is aimed specifically toward them。 The content though is applicable for anyone that does any learning at any point in life, which frankly should be all of us。 I'm not a student, but I found this book helpful。 A big chunk of the content I was already familiar with, but there were new lightbulp moments too。 Comes recommened。 Probably closer to 5 stars for students, since much of the content is aimed specifically toward them。 The content though is applicable for anyone that does any learning at any point in life, which frankly should be all of us。 。。。more

Lots of good information in here, but it should focus less on the examples and more on the “rules” - exactly what it talks about in the book!

Such an informative book! I really enjoyed reading it。 At times it is very science heavy, but overall the information is really helpful and does a good job debunking myths about common study habit recommendations。 I regularly recommend information for my students from this book, even 2-3 years after reading it! 4。5 rounded up

Boring and repetitive! Even Brown's collaboration as a storyteller to make the dry scientific content more appealing and interesting, was in vein。 The book offers effective methods yet it provides too much trivial and unnecessary details and too many examples。 Boring and repetitive! Some of the information was intuitive to me。 Some of it was new, and I've begun trying some things in my class (e。g。, more delayed reflection, and letting my students be uncomfortable in that unsure place more often)。 I think these methods can especially help students who have test anxiety。 I wonder if current teaching methods are related to that somehow。 I mentioned to my sister that I should probably read/listen to it again, since I didn't retain much of it。 She thought that was hilarious。 Some of the information was intuitive to me。 Some of it was new, and I've begun trying some things in my class (e。g。, more delayed reflection, and letting my students be uncomfortable in that unsure place more often)。 I think these methods can especially help students who have test anxiety。 I wonder if current teaching methods are related to that somehow。 I mentioned to my sister that I should probably read/listen to it again, since I didn't retain much of it。 She thought that was hilarious。 。。。more

I have read this book a couple of times and I often read the chapter no 8 again and again。 This book did effect my personal life a lot as I consistently use methods like Active Recall and Summarizing in my life。 The book is written for general audience and sometimes the advice was not relevant to me。 But the ideas that I picked were strong enough to become a part of my daily life。 This book can be thought of as "Next book to read" if you have read Barabara Oakley's "Learning How to learn"。 I have read this book a couple of times and I often read the chapter no 8 again and again。 This book did effect my personal life a lot as I consistently use methods like Active Recall and Summarizing in my life。 The book is written for general audience and sometimes the advice was not relevant to me。 But the ideas that I picked were strong enough to become a part of my daily life。 This book can be thought of as "Next book to read" if you have read Barabara Oakley's "Learning How to learn"。 。。。more
