Entertaining as a podcast series。 Lacking in depth as a book。

One of the best interview-focus books I've ever read。 Especially the first part with the business leaders and the last one with the sports once。 One of the best interview-focus books I've ever read。 Especially the first part with the business leaders and the last one with the sports once。 。。。more

I think this book is OK。 If you have listened to the Podcast, you may skip the book。 The book does give access to many great leaders 。。。 but I kinda wished he has asked more difficult questions。

Fantastic selection of people to learn from。 My main takeaways were related to developing the character of a great leader。 There really was not a lot of tactical instruction, which seems like a missed opportunity with that group。I was not familiar with Rubenstein's interview style。 It's a bit cop-like。 He states something factual about his subject, then waits for confirmation allowing time for his very charismatic subjects to expand on the topic。 I'm not saying I know how to do it better。 I just Fantastic selection of people to learn from。 My main takeaways were related to developing the character of a great leader。 There really was not a lot of tactical instruction, which seems like a missed opportunity with that group。I was not familiar with Rubenstein's interview style。 It's a bit cop-like。 He states something factual about his subject, then waits for confirmation allowing time for his very charismatic subjects to expand on the topic。 I'm not saying I know how to do it better。 I just noticed that style tended to draw out stories that are already known。 I was hoping for unconventional questions like the kind David Sedaris would come up with。 Questions like, "Do you have any regrets?" seem right out of a job interview playbook。 。。。more

Many will complain that this is not a succinct leadership book。 Yet, if you'll take time to listen, the various leaders, writers, and personalities will provide many leadership lessons。 Many will complain that this is not a succinct leadership book。 Yet, if you'll take time to listen, the various leaders, writers, and personalities will provide many leadership lessons。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed “How To Lead。” Each individual interview is marginally substantive, so the whole is greater than the sum of its parts。

This was awesome。 It was really cool to hear how captains of industry are constantly thinking 3 years into the future, how Pelosi frames all the 130k negative ads referencing her as proof of her effectiveness, how Jack Nicklaus values his family much more than his achievements, how Warren Buffet still lives in the same house he bought in the 50s! You'll be wiser after reading this about how to think strategically and what makes for a meaningful life。 This was awesome。 It was really cool to hear how captains of industry are constantly thinking 3 years into the future, how Pelosi frames all the 130k negative ads referencing her as proof of her effectiveness, how Jack Nicklaus values his family much more than his achievements, how Warren Buffet still lives in the same house he bought in the 50s! Powerful perspectives。 These are rapid fire interviews, not quite as deep as an Oprah interview, yet a ton of information pack in short time

From an unabashed admirer of David Rubenstein, this may certainly be a subjective review。 Any chance to spend a few hours with Mr。 Rubenstein - either in person, watching his show on Bloomberg TV, or reading his books must be taken。 While he is often not the subject, even through his interviews one can only learn from an exemplary life and the people he has come across and shared experiences and lessons with as a true peer。 There are some common gems about leadership traits and habits that come From an unabashed admirer of David Rubenstein, this may certainly be a subjective review。 Any chance to spend a few hours with Mr。 Rubenstein - either in person, watching his show on Bloomberg TV, or reading his books must be taken。 While he is often not the subject, even through his interviews one can only learn from an exemplary life and the people he has come across and shared experiences and lessons with as a true peer。 There are some common gems about leadership traits and habits that come through in the interviews, but for me the desire to read this was one more piece of absorption of life from DR's perspective and circle of friends。。。 。。。more

Positive: variety of short interviews from a broad range of people。 It was interesting to dip into the lives of people who have done so much。 Neat thing about the audio book is you get to listen to the actual recordings of the interviews。 Very accessible book for interview podcast listeners。Negative: Because there are so many interviews you don't get really in-depth and there seemed to be a lot of missed opportunities for interesting conversation。 Also the lens felt really capitalist and status Positive: variety of short interviews from a broad range of people。 It was interesting to dip into the lives of people who have done so much。 Neat thing about the audio book is you get to listen to the actual recordings of the interviews。 Very accessible book for interview podcast listeners。Negative: Because there are so many interviews you don't get really in-depth and there seemed to be a lot of missed opportunities for interesting conversation。 Also the lens felt really capitalist and status driven, which especially came to light in Yo Yo Ma's interview who kept trying to say he didn't play for awards and Rubenstein just kept asking the question over and over。Overall an interesting read even if there were moments I was hollering at David in the car。 。。。more

Repetition of the peer-to-peer conversations show on Bloomberg TV, which is nice show to watch on a regular weeknight。 However, if you are looking for deep insights, you'd be left wanting。 The interviews are biographical in nature and do not contain depth or breadth of ideas that one may hope from such a longlist of accomplished people。 Repetition of the peer-to-peer conversations show on Bloomberg TV, which is nice show to watch on a regular weeknight。 However, if you are looking for deep insights, you'd be left wanting。 The interviews are biographical in nature and do not contain depth or breadth of ideas that one may hope from such a longlist of accomplished people。 。。。more

Outstanding book for those who want to learn about different types of leadership traits。 The leaders Rubenstein includes in each of his categories are outstanding examples of the type of leader he is highlighting。

This book was effective in prompting thought and reflection through easy to digest and concise interviews with a number of exceptional individuals。 This book allowed me to learn about and from people who I had never heard of before as well as providing a different perspective on individuals whose story I was more familiar with。 I appreciated the focus on the history of the individual trying to understand how they got to where they were and how that may have informed their leadership style。 There This book was effective in prompting thought and reflection through easy to digest and concise interviews with a number of exceptional individuals。 This book allowed me to learn about and from people who I had never heard of before as well as providing a different perspective on individuals whose story I was more familiar with。 I appreciated the focus on the history of the individual trying to understand how they got to where they were and how that may have informed their leadership style。 There were also a couple of themes evident throughout the book on the habits of effective leaders and it was well structured to think about how leaders in different areas may differ regarding the specifics around these broad trends to fit their own context and experiences。 There were also a couple of ways that I felt this book fell a little short of my expectations。 The first was the downside to trying to be concise。 There were a couple of interviews that felt very brief and depth seemed to suffer, not allowing me as a reader to gain a full understanding of the leader or their thought processes。 The conversational tone of the interviews also made this book quite easy to read but also inhibited the critical approach that could be adopted within the interview。 At times it felt more like billionaires just patting each other on the backs for the good work they are each doing。 I enjoyed learning about the philanthropic work that was being done but feel the tone used at times was not the most appropriate。 There also could have been more synthesis at the level of the section of the book, discussing the views of the author on why it made sense to structure across different types of leaders and how that may have influenced their leadership style。 Nonetheless reading this book was fun and has certainly helped to colour the way I think about leadership。 。。。more

Our country has seen a crazy high second wave of Covid, and it feels impossible to be excited about things sometimes。 But when my doorbell rang the other morning and it was #bookmail from the lovely folks over at Jonathan Ball Publishers, I couldn’t help but squeal! Thank you to Jonathan Ball Publishers for gifting me a complimentary copy of this book。 Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own。I have been thinking about adding more non-fiction titles to my review list。 So when it comes to non-fiction I decided I am going to add titles to my list that is YA applicable。 Who says we can’t conquer the world in our twenties? (Well, I’m turning thirty this year, but I still feel like 25) I have met phenomenal people who have achieved amazing things by the time they’re 30, so yeah why not。 We all bloom at our own pace。As a business owner and entrepreneur, I often find it difficult to find the right Non-fiction books to read。 There are fantastic books on leadership out there, but with the ever-changing technological and economical landscape, I find that a lot of what is written is now common knowledge。 Which, don’t get me wrong, is fantastic, but it makes it increasingly difficult to find something that will teach or enlighten you。Writing Non-fiction reviews is so much harder, as no two Non-fictions are alike。 My biggest issue with Non-fictions is that they can become tedious, quickly。 This one, however, is so captivating I found myself rereading several chapters for all the amazing business gems。How to Lead filled that gap for me。 I’m not the biggest Non-fiction reader, to be honest。 I’d rather peruse a cookbook or a craft book when I’m not getting lost in my fictional worlds。 But this book! Oh my, I cannot stop。 I absolutely adore this book。 This is definitely one of those books that will be on all my gift lists this year。What struck me most about this book, was how each person achieved success at different stages in their lives。 There is no one right way, no golden ticket。 Your journey is your own。I don’t write in my books 😱 but I do use my brightly coloured sticky tabs to flag all the inspiring quotes and amazing lessons these non-fiction treasures contain。Wisdom from great minds like Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, Phil Knights, Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffet, Melinda Gates and many more will have you filling notebooks of ideas on your legacy, passion projects, leadership tips and many more。We are a Marketing company, and the product is our most important marketing tool。Phil Knight, Co-founder and Chairman Emeritus, Nike inc。How to lead is a collection of interviews with this generation’s industry giants on business, daily routines, management styles and secrets to their success。 And I can’t stop reading。 It’s a treasure trove of secrets and definitely a title I would encourage every person who dreams of their own business or growing their current ones to pick this up immediately The writing is so easy to follow and the responses so entertaining that you easily forget that this is a non-fiction business book。 It’s so easy to imagine yourself sitting there and listening to these conversations。 。。。more

Rubenstein has a tremendous ability to interview given his intellect and personal level of achievement。 He's able to communicate with luminaries on a peer-to-peer basis which creates rich interactions。He groups his interviews into the following categories: Visionaries, Builders, Transformers, Commanders, Decision-Makers, and Masters。The opening where he walks through his journey to creating The Carlyle Group is chalk full of good wisdom。His summary of factors that lead to success are insightful: Rubenstein has a tremendous ability to interview given his intellect and personal level of achievement。 He's able to communicate with luminaries on a peer-to-peer basis which creates rich interactions。He groups his interviews into the following categories: Visionaries, Builders, Transformers, Commanders, Decision-Makers, and Masters。The opening where he walks through his journey to creating The Carlyle Group is chalk full of good wisdom。His summary of factors that lead to success are insightful: Luck, Desire to Succeed, Pursuit of Something New and Unique, Hark Work / Long Hours, Focus, Failure, Persistence, Persuasiveness, Humble Demeanor, Credit Sharing, The Ability to Keep Learning, Integrity, and Responding to Crises。Well worth the read。 。。。more

I was fairly disappointed with this book。 Based on the title and the byline I assumed there would be some real wisdom in this book。 And while I did find a few underline worthy lines, the majority of the book was a boring read and I didn't feel like I gained much from my time reading it。 I was fairly disappointed with this book。 Based on the title and the byline I assumed there would be some real wisdom in this book。 And while I did find a few underline worthy lines, the majority of the book was a boring read and I didn't feel like I gained much from my time reading it。 。。。more
