The Color Purple is a classic。 With over a million copies sold in the UK alone, it is hailed as one of the all-time 'greats' of literature, inspiring generations of readers。

Set in the deep American South between the wars, The Color Purple is the tale of Celie, a young black girl born into poverty and segregation。 Raped repeatedly by the man she calls 'father', she has two children taken away from her, is separated from her beloved sister Nettie and is trapped into an ugly marriage。 But then she meets the glamorous Shug Avery – and magic-maker – a woman who has taken charge of her own destiny。 Gradually, Celie discovers the power and joy of her own spirit, freeing her from her past and reuniting her with those she loves。

This is my all-time favourite book in the world。 I was still in high school when I read it and it was THE book that made me love to read。 Celie is poor, black and ugly。 She has been abused throughout her life and, as such lacks any self-worth。 But a beautiful charming woman, Shug Avery, comes into her life and changes her forever。 So beautifully written!

This is an interesting book for the way it was written。 It must have been a painstaking task to write phonetically, keeping in mind the character’s limited vocabulary and exposure。 It was boring in parts when the author dwells repeatedly on themes of rape & abuse but may be it was the reality of those times。 The book spans across a lifetime of stories and journeys and there is so much learning from that。 I think one of my favorite character was Sofia!

This book took me down a rod never expected。 It was hard to read but also a page turner you didn’t want to put down。 I recommend this book at a warning it can take a toll on you。

what a good fucking book, jesus。 i'm tired and in pain right now so i'm not feeling overly verbose but suffice it to say this books is beautiful。 i love love。overall, i'd recommend this book to anyone。 it's heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, and i caution that it contains depictions of physical and sexual abuse。 what a good fucking book, jesus。 i'm tired and in pain right now so i'm not feeling overly verbose but suffice it to say this books is beautiful。 i love love。overall, i'd recommend this book to anyone。 it's heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time, and i caution that it contains depictions of physical and sexual abuse。 。。。more

Yeah, solidly obvious why this won a pulitzer。 This deserves it。 A dark yet warmly loving tale told through one woman's letters to god casts in stark relief the trials of poor black America - and especially poor black women。 There's nothing easy here, nothing without pain, but there is beauty - and that beauty unfolds more and more throughout the story as she and those around her begin to look up and listen to each other, and stand for themselves。 I especially appreciate how compassionate-yet-un Yeah, solidly obvious why this won a pulitzer。 This deserves it。 A dark yet warmly loving tale told through one woman's letters to god casts in stark relief the trials of poor black America - and especially poor black women。 There's nothing easy here, nothing without pain, but there is beauty - and that beauty unfolds more and more throughout the story as she and those around her begin to look up and listen to each other, and stand for themselves。 I especially appreciate how compassionate-yet-unmerciful the story was。 It never condemns anyone as 'evil' but also so clearly holds characters to task for their actions。 Life is incredibly hard, but you can make it better by connecting to those around you。Read this one - it's tough but all the better for it。 。。。more

I had to re-read this because my students are reading it, and it had been so long since I last read it。 I was worried it would be too intense for them-esp。 at the beginning when Celie is abused。 It was harsh, but not too much for them。 This is a beautiful book of self discovery, and I recommend it to everyone。

What an accomplishment for a book that has its main character raped by her daddy on page one and kills her mother on page two to have me crying happy tears on page 242。 I thought this was going to be a real heavy one, and in many ways it was, but still it is filled with hope and happiness and life lessons。 I love how it makes me believe that finding peace is within yourself, even when the whole world oppresses you because you are a woman / black / are different in any other way / happen to live What an accomplishment for a book that has its main character raped by her daddy on page one and kills her mother on page two to have me crying happy tears on page 242。 I thought this was going to be a real heavy one, and in many ways it was, but still it is filled with hope and happiness and life lessons。 I love how it makes me believe that finding peace is within yourself, even when the whole world oppresses you because you are a woman / black / are different in any other way / happen to live in the spot where rich people want to build a road。 Celie, Nettie, Sofia, and Shug are such powerful characters。 One of the best things is how Mr。 ___ made a 180 degrees turn after Celie left him。 I was also very impressed by the analogies between oppression (of women, mostly) in South America in Olinka; but also by how Olinka didn't seem to care for the oppression of black people in America。 And I liked how Nettie and Celie independently from each other found that God was within themselves and didn't need to look like a human being。 I know I'm forgetting a million things here, so let's just say this book is very very good。 。。。more

I've watched the movie several times and after having read the book I think they did an amazing job with the movie adaptation! So much of the verbiage was used verbatim and the integrity was definitely kept in tact。 I thought the book was beautifully written and shows the colored experience of the time。 I really enjoyed the way it was written in diary form and the characters really came to life for me。 I've watched the movie several times and after having read the book I think they did an amazing job with the movie adaptation!

Every bit of it was great。

I expected something a lot better from such a highly referenced classic。 Though it brings up some relevant issues, it doesn't make any new or interesting reflections at all。 The epistolary style was one of my favourite things, but the language the characters used was hard to understand。 I expected something a lot better from such a highly referenced classic。 Though it brings up some relevant issues, it doesn't make any new or interesting reflections at all。 The epistolary style was one of my favourite things, but the language the characters used was hard to understand。 。。。more

Alas, racism and gender inequality are still serious issues in this day and age。 My learning pointfrom this book is that one must find self-confidence, self-identity and determine to be happy against all odds。

What a rarity。 A classic book about horrible stuff that actually doesn't make you want to claw your own eyes out。There is so much hardship in this book, and none of it is shied away from, or unnecessarily detailed。。。 but it's NOT UTTERLY DEPRESSING。There is so much growth and courage and love and acceptance in this book。 I think I'm a better person already。 Loved it。 What a rarity。 A classic book about horrible stuff that actually doesn't make you want to claw your own eyes out。There is so much hardship in this book, and none of it is shied away from, or unnecessarily detailed。。。 but it's NOT UTTERLY DEPRESSING。There is so much growth and courage and love and acceptance in this book。 I think I'm a better person already。 Loved it。 。。。more

This is a classic book tackling sexism, racism, poverty and self worth。 It is an uncomfortable read at times and the subject matter of abuse in many forms, is not for the feint hearted。 That said, as far as it brings you down, it lifts you up。 Everyone should read this book, if only to appreciate the challenges other people face (and they do still face these challenges even if they are phrased slightly differently now), the potential for strength and change in the toughest situations and because This is a classic book tackling sexism, racism, poverty and self worth。 It is an uncomfortable read at times and the subject matter of abuse in many forms, is not for the feint hearted。 That said, as far as it brings you down, it lifts you up。 Everyone should read this book, if only to appreciate the challenges other people face (and they do still face these challenges even if they are phrased slightly differently now), the potential for strength and change in the toughest situations and because it's a classic。 。。。more

Such a powerful book。 That touched on difficult subjects。 Its about persecution but also looks at redemption。 Seeing Celie, Nettie & Shug, go through various struggles but you see them grow and blossom despite what they go through。 But also how they grow individually bit also together even when miles apart。

Liz

This book is such a beauty, but first it must rip out your heart and shred it to pieces and use each piece to bring such beauty to fruition。
