I really tend to like the Aphra comics even when they’re pretty pedestrian, and this one definitely edges into that territory。 I wasn’t a fan of the new Tagge addition but then they already sort of rewrote General Tagge for the current Marvel canon anyways。 In terms of archaeological hijinks, this volume has some interesting elements, especially the City of Vaale, but it seemed to be building to a big reveal that never came。 One do the rings is still missing, right? I thought the twist at some point would be they Aphra had forgeries on hand of the rings or some such, but the narrative never gets quite that creative。 The shoehorning of High Republic into current lines is probably going to be awkward, and this story does little to allay my concerns in that regard。 Also, can we get maybe a hair more consistency with Aphra’s face? She’s meant to be East Asian as far as I can tell, and such images tend to be the more striking, but every so often I spot an artist drawing her lazily and suddenly she looks white again。 Given she’s one of few characters to represent non-white characters still in Star Wars, maybe a little consistency with that representation would, you know, be kinda cool。 。。。more

I had consistent fun with Fortune and Fate - it exactly hits the mark of "galactic archaeologist and company perform a heist and duel with a mean rich guy。" Unfortunately, a lot of that fun is tempered by the fact that Fortune and Fate offers almost no information about who the new characters are and why we should care about them。 It also seems to have brushed all of Doctor Aphra's history under the table without bothering to offer any new history。 She's just a capable person! And not much else。The art is perfectly fine, nothing amazing。 I enjoyed the little references to the High Republic - I guess everything is going to be tied into that overarching publishing event now。 Sort of like how Marvel does it! I do long for the days of the Extended Universe, when Star Wars actually had a pretty settled "history" that a series about a galactic archaeologist could mine with more zest。Complaints aside, Fortune and Fate is a "good" Star Wars comic in that it kept me quite entertained, felt Star Wars-y, and made me look forward to the next one。 Fine corporate product。 。。。more

It's a new run of Dr。 Aphra, a new writer, the chance to do something a bit different with the character。。 or just do more of the same, and don't do that very well。You get the feeling that Aphra is never going to become more than a Han Solo knock-off, just a flat, static character with a few quirks, who never really develops。 This already made the stories in the first run so repetitive, here we're starting that sequence over again。So we spend a lot of time in a dead city that could've been quite It's a new run of Dr。 Aphra, a new writer, the chance to do something a bit different with the character。。 or just do more of the same, and don't do that very well。You get the feeling that Aphra is never going to become more than a Han Solo knock-off, just a flat, static character with a few quirks, who never really develops。 This already made the stories in the first run so repetitive, here we're starting that sequence over again。So we spend a lot of time in a dead city that could've been quite interesting, but isn't。 There's double crossing, there is fighting in the ruins, etc。 Didn't we do all this in the Gillen/Spurrier run。。?It tries to have a smart "Aphra was on top all along!" ending, and it goes over like a wet fart。Next up: the sister of the guy who wasn't very interesting。 。。。more

I thoroughly enjoyed this volume and look forward to reading more of Wong's run with Doctor Aphra! Doctor Aphra, for me, is a character who works best in small, controlled doses。 I enjoyed the first series at first, but as it went on and on, with basically the same storyline of Aphra starting a job, doing something horrible to her crew, barely making it out, feeling bad for her actions, then doing it all again -- it just got old。 This new series, I guess, is far enough removed from that first series that I wasn't tired of the character。 I think it also helped that Alyssa Wong didn't have Aphr Doctor Aphra, for me, is a character who works best in small, controlled doses。 I enjoyed the first series at first, but as it went on and on, with basically the same storyline of Aphra starting a job, doing something horrible to her crew, barely making it out, feeling bad for her actions, then doing it all again -- it just got old。 This new series, I guess, is far enough removed from that first series that I wasn't tired of the character。 I think it also helped that Alyssa Wong didn't have Aphra do anything really horrible。 Aphra wasn't a saint, but she also wasn't dislikeable。 。。。more

Doctor Aphra is unquestionably one of the best original characters to come out of Star Wars comics, but her solo series was a roller coaster that barely managed any consistency。Wong, Cresta and Rosenberg's debut volume on Doctor Aphra is a perfect jumping-on point for new Aphra fans, and also a return to the best of Aphra as a character, and a distillation of her best stories。 Aphra returns to her roots as a double crossing archaeologist - this time, the "Rings of Vaale" which will provide the w Doctor Aphra is unquestionably one of the best original characters to come out of Star Wars comics, but her solo series was a roller coaster that barely managed any consistency。Wong, Cresta and Rosenberg's debut volume on Doctor Aphra is a perfect jumping-on point for new Aphra fans, and also a return to the best of Aphra as a character, and a distillation of her best stories。 Aphra returns to her roots as a double crossing archaeologist - this time, the "Rings of Vaale" which will provide the wearer with infinite power and wealth - with a quirky, equally double crossing crew, and a perfectly creepy abandoned city。Wong gets Aphra。 She gets her quippy one liners, what blocks her from intimacy and honest relationships, and how to authentically integrate her queerness without making it decorative。 On that note, while it seems like every other woman is Aphra's ex, Wong handles their relationship with more tact and nuance than Spurrier or Gillen ever did。 The pacing is excellent and Wong also introduces memorable secondary characters, not an easy feat。 The villain looks like 90's regret but a new spin on spoiled rich boy - collecting rare antiques and vaporizing them, so he is the last to hold them。Marika Cresta and Rachelle Rosenberg's art fires on all cylinders。 The pencils are soft but kinetic, and aren't too hyper realistic (something I find off putting in Star Wars books)。 Aphra is drawn beautifully and her chemistry with Okka is believable, and Rosenberg's colors evoke a classic Star Wars story。Some folks are complaining that this book "doesn't tread new ground," but it's not supposed to。 It's a volume one - and frankly, it's the volume one Dr。 Aphra deserved- because it shows us exactly who Aphra is。 And I'm here for it, as long as we see Triple Zero in the next arc。 。。。more

Waffling between two and three stars on this one。I mean, it isn't bad。 The only real complaint I have is that the villain seems way too over the top for Star Wars (though I am sure that could be argued based on other villains。)。Mostly, though, everything is just okay。 The plot is serviceable if a bit predictable。 Character growth is minimal。 Action/plot are simultaneously rushed and slow。 (?)I like the character and I feel like Wong "gets" her (and I feel that her dialogue is particularly well-w Waffling between two and three stars on this one。I mean, it isn't bad。 The only real complaint I have is that the villain seems way too over the top for Star Wars (though I am sure that could be argued based on other villains。)。Mostly, though, everything is just okay。 The plot is serviceable if a bit predictable。 Character growth is minimal。 Action/plot are simultaneously rushed and slow。 (?)I like the character and I feel like Wong "gets" her (and I feel that her dialogue is particularly well-written which is a huge plus in comics。。。) so I hope that she gets more of a chance to tell these stories - I just hope that I become more invested as she does。 。。。more

Alyssa Wong's Aphra run is off to a great start。 I'm glad we're back to Aphra's archeology roots and a focus on getting profit for Aphra and co rather than dealing with the Empire。 That was fun, but learning about weird stuff in the universe is a blast and not really anywhere else。 I liked our new characters, good and bad, and am very excited for the series to continue。 Though, I would also like more TA please。 Overall, I'd highly suggest it if you like Aphra or Star Wars comics in general。 Alyssa Wong's Aphra run is off to a great start。 I'm glad we're back to Aphra's archeology roots and a focus on getting profit for Aphra and co rather than dealing with the Empire。 That was fun, but learning about weird stuff in the universe is a blast and not really anywhere else。 I liked our new characters, good and bad, and am very excited for the series to continue。 Though, I would also like more TA please。 Overall, I'd highly suggest it if you like Aphra or Star Wars comics in general。 。。。more

The Aphra series has gone steadily worse, in my opinion。 Now it's basically rehashing the same plot, but with different characters。 Oh look, yet ANOTHER person she has betrayed in the past。 Oh an ex-lover? Who would have ever thought of that? Aphra had SO much potential at first and now she's just bland and boring with no characters doing anything。 I'm seriously disappointed in what happened to her series。 She deserved better。 The Aphra series has gone steadily worse, in my opinion。 Now it's basically rehashing the same plot, but with different characters。 Oh look, yet ANOTHER person she has betrayed in the past。 Oh an ex-lover? This is definitely more of a reset/back to basics adventure for Doctor Aphra。 I thought the story here was just ok and the art was some of the worst in Star Wars’ Marvel run。 I’m hoping for better with this series going forward as the first run was great。

At this point, Doctor Aphra remains the best thing to come out of the Marvel Star Wars comics since they restarted。 Not to say that the rest is bad, but Doctor Aphra as a character and as a series has been the most consistently impressive。 Which is a preface to say that this first arc of her new series doesn't quite hit the heights I'd hoped for。It all feels very safe - there's not a massive amount that we've not seen explored already in the previous series under Gillen and Spurrier。 Aphra gets At this point, Doctor Aphra remains the best thing to come out of the Marvel Star Wars comics since they restarted。 Not to say that the rest is bad, but Doctor Aphra as a character and as a series has been the most consistently impressive。 Which is a preface to say that this first arc of her new series doesn't quite hit the heights I'd hoped for。It all feels very safe - there's not a massive amount that we've not seen explored already in the previous series under Gillen and Spurrier。 Aphra gets in over her head, there's some double crossing, she winds up infuriating someone far more powerful than her, and she annoys one of her ex-girlfriends along the way。 And while Aphra's previous adventures were very similar, they couldn't be called formulaic since they were always pushing the boundaries either in terms of the locales she visited (the haunted Jedi space station, the jail that was falling apart), or in the ethical problems that they posed (Do I betray my girlfriend? How can I fall in love with an Empire soldier? What did I do to deserve this evil droid trying to murder me?)。 What this series does is all of that, but it makes it feel kind of wrote。 None of the new characters are particularly compelling, including the villain of the piece (although he has an interesting MO for an archaeological foil I suppose), and Aphra herself spends most of her time troubleshooting rather than doing anything remotely Aphra-like。The artwork also feels kind of flat。 Marika Cresta's work is fine in terms of style and perspective, but there's no real depth to it。 Doctor Aphra's never had the cream of the crop Marvel artists on it, but they've always brought something interesting to the table, which isn't the case here。 Maybe it's the colours washing it out, I'm not sure, but it's just not entirely right。If you've never read a Doctor Aphra book before, then I expect you'll enjoy this quite a lot。 But if you have read the previous series, then you won't get anything you haven't seen before (and done better) elsewhere。 。。。more

Finally a née Doctor Aphra series。 It’s fun adventure, mystery, scary, and full of the patented backstabbing we’ve come to love about her and pretty much anyone around her。 She’s seeking ancient power rings。 She has a new group of teammates。 She doesn’t do team very well。 What could go wrong?
