Summary

In ancient Rome, the slaves are rebelling—and they've even stolen Julius Caesar's own warship, the finest in the Roman navy。 Under the heroic leadership of Spartakis, the former galley slaves make for the small town where Caesar's old enemies Asterix and Obelix live。 When they arrive, though, the slaves find the town in crisis because Obelix has drunk a magic potion that has turned him back into a child。 Now everyone must sail to the wonderful continent of Atlantis to find a cure。 But, the Romans are on the ocean blue, too。and the battles are about to come fast and furious。 8 1/2 X 11 1/4。 all in color

De strip was eens interessant om te lezen。 Het is duidelijk niet het beste werk。Ik vind het standbeeld idee wel grappig maar ik heb er minder om gelachen dan anders。Het enige waar ik mee kon lachen was de haai en dat is jammer。

Nice book。

Considering that Uderzo did write two excellent ones by himself-Asterix and the Black Gold, and Asterix and the Magic Carpet- this is not the best Asterix book。No doubt, Uderzo has explored some new themes, but the idea of Obelix turning into granite, and then reverting to childhood is laying it on a bit thick-come on!To bring the great figure, Spartacus into the equation was a good idea, and I quite liked Atlantis, with the cute little angel-children and the flying cows。

Another generic review。 The Asterix series was introduced to me by my father who loved them。 He bought me various random omnibus editions over the years and then I picked up the individual books that were missing from those。 Eventually I decided to buy the latest omnibus collections to replace the well read originals。 I love these books。 The art is never less than perfect throughout the original run, and even the latest new books continue the strong art。 The stories are all decent。 Some are stro Another generic review。 The Asterix series was introduced to me by my father who loved them。 He bought me various random omnibus editions over the years and then I picked up the individual books that were missing from those。 Eventually I decided to buy the latest omnibus collections to replace the well read originals。 I love these books。 The art is never less than perfect throughout the original run, and even the latest new books continue the strong art。 The stories are all decent。 Some are stronger than others but they are all fun to read and that's the main thing for me。 Despite some weaker stories they are all funny, entertaining reads。 The characters are great throughout the series with the regulars being joined by memorable guests in each book。 The Asterix series is still a favourite one of mine 40 odd years after first starting to read them。 As a child you find the art and broader humour draws you in。 As an adult you get the jokes you missed when you were younger。 A highly recommended series。 。。。more

Obelix gets into trouble in this episode as he drinks from the magic potion and turns into stone。 Getafix's potion will make things even worse as it succeeds to bring Obelix back to life, only that he's now a child!Meanwhile a group of former slaves led by Spartakis (who resembles very much Kirk Douglas as an homage to him and the movie Spartacus) seek refuge to the Gaul village。(view spoiler)[A Roman patrol will capture little Obelix, now that he doesn't have his former strength。 The Romans hav Obelix gets into trouble in this episode as he drinks from the magic potion and turns into stone。 Getafix's potion will make things even worse as it succeeds to bring Obelix back to life, only that he's now a child!Meanwhile a group of former slaves led by Spartakis (who resembles very much Kirk Douglas as an homage to him and the movie Spartacus) seek refuge to the Gaul village。(view spoiler)[A Roman patrol will capture little Obelix, now that he doesn't have his former strength。 The Romans have the intention to take him by ship to Rome, but Asterix, Getafix and the group of former slaves will chase them, managing to free him。 Then the whole group heads for Atlantis, which is inhabited by children and an adult priest。 The priest informs them that he is unable to transform Obelix back to an adult。 The company, unhappy, leaves the island apart from Spartakis and his fellows, who choose to stay and live as children again, totally free at last。At the way back the Romans bounce back, capturing the ship that carry the heroes back home。 They have even drunk the magic potion。 As they are ready to throw Asterix into the sea, Obelix, because of his despair, becomes an adult again and the real party takes place, with Obelix beating as usual the Romans。 (hide spoiler)]I wasn't impressed with this volume。 I felt it had too many plots and adventures that act as a distraction。 Obelix's transformation into an adult seems a bit arbitrary and it's not explained adequately。 I didn't like the fact that Atlantis is inhabited only by children。 Also the slaves led by Spartakis are most of the time in the background of the story, without a real purpose, apart from being there as an homage。 。。。more

El guion y sus giros pecan de vagos。 Este tomo es más una curiosidad (¿qué pasaría si Obélix tomase la poción?) que otra cosa。

Such a great adventure! A total joy to read。 Asterix is supreme, and a changed Obelix! They have FUN! Goscinny would be so proud。 Recommended。

This book, set well into the series [in fact, after the passing of one of the creators] is bizarre humor at its best。 Don't mind the inconsistencies that will pop up, just run with it and laugh。 As usual, the English translation of this graphic work, originally written in French, is hilariously weird, with things like an official saying “I may be responsible, but I'm not guilty,” when faced with retribution for one of his many wrongdoings。In this story, you have Obelix trying one too many times This book, set well into the series [in fact, after the passing of one of the creators] is bizarre humor at its best。 Don't mind the inconsistencies that will pop up, just run with it and laugh。 As usual, the English translation of this graphic work, originally written in French, is hilariously weird, with things like an official saying “I may be responsible, but I'm not guilty,” when faced with retribution for one of his many wrongdoings。In this story, you have Obelix trying one too many times to get magic potion [which is forbidden to him since his childhood accident of falling into a vat of it], Roman slaves stealing a galley belonging to Julius Caesar himself, a trip to Atlantis, Cleopatra in Rome on a throne next to Caesar's, Caesar correctly figuring out odd things, the uttering of which makes him look crazy to Cleopatra and her leopard。。。the list goes on。 Because this story involves ships, the pirates who appear in several volumes in the series get to make an appearance here, too, and with no better results than usual。There is a lot of cartoony violence but no bloodshed, and the book is suitable for kids and adults, although very young children will ask confusing questions。 Trust me, so will anyone with a knowledge of Roman history… 。。。more

Derelict Space Sheep

Harmless fun, though there’s an overabundance of punning and without Goscinny the story lacks any real direction。 That said, Uderzo’s illustrations remain exemplary。 Along with the familiar Asterix motifs, we are presented with a whimsical Atlantis and see Obelix revert to childhood。

A band of slaves led by Spartakis (a parody of Spartacus) has taken over Julius Caesar's personal galley, prompting Caesar to send his Admiral Crustacius to recover the vessel。After some arguing about a safe place to disembark, the slaves set sail for the only place safe from the Romans: the village of indomitable Gauls。 The four outlying Roman camps rehearse a parade to welcome Crustacius, who is pursuing the slaves。 Believing the Romans are about to attack, the Gauls prepare for battle。 Obelix A band of slaves led by Spartakis (a parody of Spartacus) has taken over Julius Caesar's personal galley, prompting Caesar to send his Admiral Crustacius to recover the vessel。After some arguing about a safe place to disembark, the slaves set sail for the only place safe from the Romans: the village of indomitable Gauls。 The four outlying Roman camps rehearse a parade to welcome Crustacius, who is pursuing the slaves。 Believing the Romans are about to attack, the Gauls prepare for battle。 Obelix is (as usual) denied Getafix's magic potion。 As the Gauls return victorious, they find Obelix has turned to stone after drinking a remaining cauldron of magic potion。The former galley slaves are granted refuge, while Getafix tries to revive Obelix。 Ultimately Obelix returns to life, but as a child and deprived of his usual strength。 He is kidnapped by Roman soldiers and put on a ship bound for Rome, where Crustacius intends to use him as a bargaining counter for the return of Caesar's galley。 Asterix, Dogmatix, Getafix and the former slaves set out in pursuit and rescue Obelix at sea。 Crustacius and his adjutant Vice-Admiral Nautilus, as well as Caesar's galley, are handed over to the pirates, who plan to ransom them to Caesar。 Spartakis and his crew take the Gauls to Atlantis (the Canary Islands), but the Atlanteans, despite having the secret of eternal youth, cannot restore Obelix's adulthood。 The Gauls head homeward, while the freed slaves remain on Atlantis as children forever。 On their way back, the Gauls are intercepted by another Roman galley and Asterix is knocked unconscious by a catapult stone。 Seeing his friend about to be thrown to the sharks, Obelix recovers his strength and size, and rescues him。 Obelix then propels the galley into the Roman camp of Aquarium, before returning to the village for a feast。On Caesar's galley, the pirates unwittingly give Crustacius a dose of magic potion from a barrel inadvertently left behind by Getafix。 He expels the pirates and plans on using his new strength to usurp Caesar; however, he makes the same mistake as Obelix and becomes a statue。 Nautilus's ambition of obtaining a promotion for bringing back the galley is dashed when he forgets to remove the jolly roger upon approaching Rome's harbour and the vessel is attacked and sinks。 The statue of Crustacius is installed in the Circus Maximus, while Nautilus and his crew are reduced to sweeping the arena。 Asked by Cleopatra why he has erected a statue to commemorate his incompetent admiral, Caesar replies that although lions do not eat granite, things may change some day。Text extracted from Wikipedia 。。。more

Not bad and the kids liked it, but I miss the old Asterix balanced stories and ROFL humor。

Cleopatra reminds Julius Caesar that he still has not conquered the Gauls in Armorica。 Intent on recovering Caesar’s galley overtaken by slaves heading to the village, once again the Romans and Gauls clash (really a one sided rout)。 Obelix unfortunately cannot resist consuming the magic potion that everyone else but him must partake with unfortunate consequences。
