Summary

Eleanor is the new girl in town, and with her chaotic family life, her mismatched clothes and unruly red hair, she couldn't stick out more if she tried。

Park is the boy at the back of the bus。 Black T-shirts, headphones, head in a book - he thinks he's made himself invisible。 But not to Eleanor。。。 never to Eleanor。

Slowly, steadily, through late-night conversations and an ever-growing stack of mix tapes, Eleanor and Park fall for each other。 They fall in love the way you do the first time, when you're young, and you feel as if you have nothing and everything to lose。

It was like a modern Romeo and Juliet without the feeding families。 I related to this book a lot and am in love with it。 Definitely made me cry at the end though (every time that I read it)。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved this book and how it progressed, but the ended is a little confusing to me。 When Park mentions that Eleanor "hadn't written him a letter, it was a post card。 Just 3 words long" (Rowell 325), it leads e to think that they are no longer together。 I wonder if they ever visited each other。 Also I would like to know what happened to Richie。 Overall, I loved the book, but I was a bit mislead by the ending。 I loved this book and how it progressed, but the ended is a little confusing to me。 When Park mentions that Eleanor "hadn't written him a letter, it was a post card。 Just 3 words long" (Rowell 325), it leads e to think that they are no longer together。 I wonder if they ever visited each other。 Also I would like to know what happened to Richie。 Overall, I loved the book, but I was a bit mislead by the ending。 。。。more

My teenage self would have loved the love in this book。 My adult self loves all the music, lit & 1980’s references。 Cute & very YA。

Quirky book addict

I would recommend this to people who read YA books with lot of sex and bad boys involved。 Nice is good, infact nice is the best。 No tattoos or piercing involved, hell, there was no abs or huge biceps here。 You don't need all those to like someone。 I would recommend this to people who read YA books with lot of sex and bad boys involved。 Nice is good, infact nice is the best。 No tattoos or piercing involved, hell, there was no abs or huge biceps here。 You don't need all those to like someone。 。。。more

Npt that good, i found it actually very boring。 This is suposed to be a cute romance, but the romance really disapointed me。 Other than that every other part was very predictable and cliché。 It does read very fast read it in 4 hours。

I haven't read much in the way of contemporary YA, but after this book I think I will explore more of this genre。 I really appreciated the human themes of this book and the fact that the YA nature of it made it quite and easy and relaxing read for me to experience these within。 I haven't read much in the way of contemporary YA, but after this book I think I will explore more of this genre。 I really appreciated the human themes of this book and the fact that the YA nature of it made it quite and easy and relaxing read for me to experience these within。 。。。more

I can see why this is so popular with teenagers。 The dark broken home stuff doesn’t quite work for me, but it’s obviously realistic。 The author really nails the teenage intensity of a first love, how complex and enveloping it is。 And I loved how whenever one of the leads said anything remotely clever or thoughtful, we only heard it while reading the other persons perspective。 Park doesn’t say anything cool while we’re in his head; he doesn’t think he’s cool。 But Eleanor knows he’s awesome, so sh I can see why this is so popular with teenagers。 The dark broken home stuff doesn’t quite work for me, but it’s obviously realistic。 The author really nails the teenage intensity of a first love, how complex and enveloping it is。 And I loved how whenever one of the leads said anything remotely clever or thoughtful, we only heard it while reading the other persons perspective。 Park doesn’t say anything cool while we’re in his head; he doesn’t think he’s cool。 But Eleanor knows he’s awesome, so she hears him say awesome things all the time。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 If you ever watched the movie ‘500 days of summer’ I would say that this is the teenage version of it。 The ending killed me。 In this book we are dying for a happy ending- but the ending when he got the postcard felt like a sigh of relief to me。 This is the first book I ever truly read(I never liked reading or I could never focus enough)I love the characters in this book so much it hurts。

I read this so fast。 I just got home deciding what to read and I picked this up。 I didn't even realise I had finished it until there was no next page。 This was really really REALLY good。 This was the prefect book for me today。 (How often does that happen!!!!!!) I hate cliffhangers but it felt right that there was no wrap up to their story。 I read this so fast。 I just got home deciding what to read and I picked this up。 I didn't even realise I had finished it until there was no next page。 This was really really REALLY good。 This was the prefect book for me today。 (How often does that happen!!!!!!)

I love Rainbow Rowell's unique metaphors and analogies。 They aren't clichéd, and they really describe the adolescent feelings of first loves。 Eleanor and Park was filled with these and it let's the reader deeply explore the characters and their development。The story was from the point of view of both Eleanor and Park and the two of them were frustrating at times。 It is so obvious what they both feel about each other, but apparently not to them! I felt the characters were too strange, as in, I didn't connect with them because they were repeatedly too "quirky"; however I did feel bad for Eleanor and all that happened to her。 I felt the characters were too strange, as in, I didn't connect with them because they were repeatedly too "quirky"; however I did feel bad for Eleanor and all that happened to her。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Dear Janelle, read this again when you’re focused and not working ER and only got 3 hours of sleep and then back to reading it again lol。 Highlights the quotes you like then rate this book again。 You barely skipped any pages on this one but in the future do not skip any pages or words because it matters :)I was going to give it 4。5/5 as soon as I finished reading but after some more thoughts its 4/5 because there are flaws I can’t ignore。 Let me start with I really like how the book is set up wi Dear Janelle, read this again when you’re focused and not working ER and only got 3 hours of sleep and then back to reading it again lol。 Highlights the quotes you like then rate this book again。 You barely skipped any pages on this one but in the future do not skip any pages or words because it matters :)I was going to give it 4。5/5 as soon as I finished reading but after some more thoughts its 4/5 because there are flaws I can’t ignore。 Let me start with I really like how the book is set up with alternating POV’s that matches the whole story and almost rhymes and flows really good。 I love to read both their views about the world and to each other and when they realized they like each other awwww。。。I like how Park is a teenage boy, immature, gullible, and also always on his headphone。 He was so honest about how his first impression about Eleanor and how he was also a jerk about thinking he can’t make Eleanor sit next to him because he may get bullied。 At the same time, I get it。 When he said if not Eleanor then it maybe him next because he’s the only asian in the school which at the time, can be a reason a for bullying。。。 He somehow managed to see the Eleanor beauty out of all the flaws she has but he was still ashamed of her and it made me sad that he punched Dave not truly for Eleanor but for him too, to save himself from the bullying。 Poor Dave though, he was an actual friend and Park didn’t realize that。 Park eventually didn’t care about what other people would think about Eleanor and that’s when he became more attractive, he is quite innocent too which showed his 16 year old self。 In their relationship, he was definitely the one who lead and the more mature one。 I adore Park because he knows what love is。Eleanor had so much going on with her, every time Rainbow talks about her style and her appearance, I remember some high school students like that。 Of which they all have a reason behind the appearance that we don’t know of。 I felt sooo bad for her and her insecurities that I can relate with。 I can see why Park liked her even with a look like that because he saw her shine and Eleanor is such a fun character and she definitely shined along with her depressing story。 Eleanor’s mom is so stupid that I felt bad for her because in reality there are people stuck in a toxic relationship because they can’t get out of it, she had to consider her 4 other kids even though Eleanor was kicked out of her home for a year? wow。 Fuck Richie。 that plot twist made me want to punch him more than anything。 Park’s family also has flaws but definitely better than Eleanor’s family。 I like how her mom also spoke like a korean/asian mom with broken language because in reality there are many asian mom like that。 Its hard for asians to speak english without a thick accent。 Eleanor’s mom is shockingly open about the relationship but at the same time she truly showed her true feelings about Eleanor。 When she had a change of heart because she finally understood the reason behind her, my heart just melted。 Park’s dad despite them not getting along perfectly (dad and son almost always have problem huh。), he was real mature and nice to Eleanor, I loved how he didn’t stop Park because he knows its right and even offered his own home awwwww。 I wasn’t entirely sure what the two misfits and star-crossed lover meant at first。 Then the more Rainbow became racist, the more I understand it。 Yes, it was dated back on 1986, thought i’m not exactly sure what Americans think about asian during that time。 I definitely see the common racist stereotypes going on during that time。 But for a book written on 2013。 We are definitely passed that time that its ok to be racist, in fact, there’s so many asian americans now。 Having red hair is even something to be jealous of or some people adore nowadays。 Rowell unnecessarily became racist and of course it is part of the plot but most of it could be deleted and unnecessary to the whole plot Which is why I had to change the rating。 。。。more

I love how it's in the 80s so the mixtapes and comics only make it so much cuter because it actually just seems like little things they do for each other。 I just love the way they got together and it was so relatable which made it even better。 This book is what really got me into reading and into loving paperback books。 It made me realize what its like to live inside a book and to look forward to reading a book。 I finished this book very fast too。 I love how it's in the 80s so the mixtapes and comics only make it so much cuter because it actually just seems like little things they do for each other。 I just love the way they got together and it was so relatable which made it even better。 This book is what really got me into reading and into loving paperback books。 It made me realize what its like to live inside a book and to look forward to reading a book。 I finished this book very fast too。 。。。more

Hard pass and warning for future readers。 From page 1 I was completely horrified at the racist language, stereotyping and straight up fetishizing of Park and other Asian characters。 When Eleanor asks (in her head。。) “the one question you’re not supposed to ask,” I had to put this book down。 There’s a huge difference between portraying racist characters / social issues and being inherently racist。 I also was deeply disappointed that Eleanor’s identity revolves around her being undesirable because Hard pass and warning for future readers。 From page 1 I was completely horrified at the racist language, stereotyping and straight up fetishizing of Park and other Asian characters。 When Eleanor asks (in her head。。) “the one question you’re not supposed to ask,” I had to put this book down。 There’s a huge difference between portraying racist characters / social issues and being inherently racist。 I also was deeply disappointed that Eleanor’s identity revolves around her being undesirable because of her body type。 Harmful and damaging。 I recommend reading some other 1/2 star reviews for in-depth analysis of what was going on here。 。。。more

It was an okay book。 I wish that there would have been more clarity at the end。 I really wanted to love this book but in the end I didn’t like it that much。 It was kinda sad but not really heartbreaking and it made me uncomfortable at times。
