Summary

Not a bad book, but not my favorite from this author。 But it did have a strong ending。

Boy, do I LOVE C。J。 Tudor books!! I had read some rumblings about racial profiling in this book so I was actually a bit hesitant to give this one a chance, however I absolutely did not find or pick up on that at all while reading, thankfully。 I simply enjoyed the Horror & Thriller aspects of this and this one just flew by for me! Parts creepy ghost girls in a graveyard, parts decades old murder mystery, I was hooked! I would put this probably as her second best novel yet, as The Hiding Place is Boy, do I LOVE C。J。 Tudor books!! More thoughts to come, but don't put off reading this any longer if you haven't done so already, you will not be disappointed! Now we have to wait another year for some more, ugh!! ;-( 。。。more

I think there was some reaching here - almost a back and forth in what Tudor wanted to do, make the book about Merry and Joy or make the book about the Burning Girls。 Also, at some points in the book it was almost as if there was a “oh let me add that in there” moment one too many times。 I love a good twist but I think Tudor tried to make this too busy and twisty and it ended up not being as scary and thrilling as I had hoped。

Messud has a way of telling what on the surface is a relatively ordinary story of two best friend growing up from elementary to early high school years。 As I read I felt a sense there was always more than what was being revealed。 Not suspenseful, but being compelled to keep turning the page。 This book is an exploration of the inner life and the stories we tell。

A Decent ReadIt’s a solid story with a decent ending。 At times, it feels like too many threads, but they’re tied up (somewhat unsurprisingly) in the end。 However, if she referenced the “dog collar” one more time, I might have thrown the book across the room。 It became repetitive and a bit lazy。

this book was a wild ride。 right up until the end i felt there were just too many plot lines to keep track of, but they actually all tied together in a way that was even better than i had hoped。 all the right mixes of crime and supernatural, expected and unexpected plot twists, and suspense without being excessive。 it was definitely difficult to put down, especially because of how the chapters switched perspectives so it kept me on the edge while building up the other storylines。

The story has a few good twists at the end, but was rather boring and difficult to get through。

This book is now in my top 10 favorite books! I was not expecting the ending。 The book did have a religious weight to it, which is something i usually do not like。 But the twists, turns and unexpected horrors were phenomenal。 I wasn’t expecting the book to turn the way it did。 But it was well written。

Hang on to your hats folks as this one is a fantastic roller-coaster ride and in the running for my favorite this year! Not just a thriller but a literary grab at your heart。 I can’t recommend this one enough!

It's a really quick read that I got through in a day。 Not my usual type of book, but I was tired of picking up books and then not finishing them, so I wanted something that didn't take a lot of work, and this fit the bill。I put most of the mystery together before the book ended, even if (view spoiler)[the supernatural element to the story is never really explained one way or another。 It just is。 (hide spoiler)] As for as endings go, put this more famous book (view spoiler)[To Kill a Mockingbird It's a really quick read that I got through in a day。 Not my usual type of book, but I was tired of picking up books and then not finishing them, so I wanted something that didn't take a lot of work, and this fit the bill。I put most of the mystery together before the book ended, even if (view spoiler)[the supernatural element to the story is never really explained one way or another。 It just is。 (hide spoiler)] As for as endings go, put this more famous book (view spoiler)[To Kill a Mockingbird (hide spoiler)] and this quintessential 90's movie (view spoiler)[The Usual Suspects (hide spoiler)] together, and there you go。 I want to spend more time with the main character。 Maybe in a sequel? 。。。more

Ominous, spooky, murder filled book。 I definitely enjoyed reading it, although realistically how many dead bodies can there be in one book? It was somewhat confusing as (view spoiler)[ there were different killers and also (hide spoiler)] some of the chapters were intentionally vague。 One thing I didn't like was (view spoiler)[ getting a glimpse into Jack's thoughts in her head, as she had her own chapters, but the fact that she was really Merry wasn't revealed until the end。 Seems like a cheap Ominous, spooky, murder filled book。 I definitely enjoyed reading it, although realistically how many dead bodies can there be in one book? 4。5 stars-this was really good! Very twisty psychological thriller type book with a few different storylines that all connect at the end。 I am usually disappointed in most books in this genre but this was a good one!

Looking back, I think this is my favorite of C。J。 Tudor's novels。 I liked the mystery, suspense, and pacing of the story, which had elements of psychological horror and the supernatural but never asked the reader to suspend too much disbelief。 The mystery had a strong, unsettling, but unexpected resolution。 The setting of the rural village where everyone knows everyone else's business was also appealing。 Most of all, I liked the Reverend Jack Brooks - an ecclesiast with a mysterious, unstable pa Looking back, I think this is my favorite of C。J。 Tudor's novels。 I liked the mystery, suspense, and pacing of the story, which had elements of psychological horror and the supernatural but never asked the reader to suspend too much disbelief。 The mystery had a strong, unsettling, but unexpected resolution。 The setting of the rural village where everyone knows everyone else's business was also appealing。 Most of all, I liked the Reverend Jack Brooks - an ecclesiast with a mysterious, unstable past - and daughter Flo。 Their loving but prickly relationship drove the narrative。 For me, it was reminiscent of the works of Phil Rickman, whose Merrily Watkins novels also feature a rural priest wrestling with a recalcitrant teenage daughter (Jane), a town with a pagan background, and a hint of the supernatural; if you liked this book, start with the first Merrily novel, The Wine of Angels 。。。more

This book was better than I originally expected。 Seen through the eyes of different people in a small town, a vicar, her daughter, and a teenage girl this is a ghost story of 2 girls who were burned alive as martyrs - except it’s much more than that。

Telling a story in first person, present tense is a difficult think to do。 And in this case, it was not successful, at least in my opinion。 The plot would have flowed much better without that as a distraction。 With the addition of characters who I found it hard to empathize with (no matter what their plight or motivation), it was somewhat of an effort to finish。 In short, there is little here for me to recommend。。 Maybe just not my cup of tea。 Source - Review copy (Random House/Ballantine Books Telling a story in first person, present tense is a difficult think to do。 And in this case, it was not successful, at least in my opinion。 The plot would have flowed much better without that as a distraction。 With the addition of characters who I found it hard to empathize with (no matter what their plight or motivation), it was somewhat of an effort to finish。 In short, there is little here for me to recommend。。 Maybe just not my cup of tea。 Source - Review copy (Random House/Ballantine Books via NetGalley) 。。。more

Hell to the Yeah!!I didn’t know what to expect going into this amazing novel by C。J。 Tudor! The Burning Girls had me hooked from the jump。 It wastes no time before diving into the mystery at hand, so prepare yourself for effigies, exorcisms, and evil。After the horrifying death of one of her parishioners, Reverend Jack Brooks finds herself reassigned to the country village of Chapel Croft。 Forced to move there with her teenage daughter Flo in tow, Jack discovers that the new post comes with its own set of challenges。 The previous vicar, a man interested in local history, was investigati The Burning Girls had me hooked from the jump。 It wastes no time before diving into the mystery at hand, so prepare yourself for effigies, exorcisms, and evil。After the horrifying death of one of her parishioners, Reverend Jack Brooks finds herself reassigned to the country village of Chapel Croft。 Forced to move there with her teenage daughter Flo in tow, Jack discovers that the new post comes with its own set of challenges。 The previous vicar, a man interested in local history, was investigating the 30-year-old disappearance of two girls when he suddenly killed himself。 Jack decides to pick up where he left off, and it soon becomes apparent that something sinister is at work in the village。 There's a lot going on in this novel - in a good way。 While somethings are obvious early on, you don't have all the pieces to put the puzzle together until the very end。 The book offers plenty of clues to keep you guessing though。 The narration jumps between Jack and Flo (read by Gemma Whelan) and various third parties past and present (read by Richard Armitage)。 I'm a big fan of both narrators。 The writing was great as well。 I found myself stopping to save different quotes, from Jack's sections in particular。 I'll definitely be checking out Tudor's other books next。 。。。more

Like others before me have discussed, this book is a mess。 Plotwise it doesn't follow cause and effect throughout the story, instead, it has a kind of bifurcation that I can't explain without spoilers, so suffice to say that it doesn't make any sense! Wow。 I think I just found a new author that I will need to stalk and read everything。 I obsessed over Tudor’s writing style—I feel like the dialogue was about as perfect and spot on as could be。 With thrillers, sometimes I get a little weary with the same old, same old, but this one had me floored—everything about it added the creepy factor with the mystery。 And Tudor pulled it all together flawlessly。 I kept thinking, “Wait, what about。。。” and then it would be addressed, but not in a happily-ev Wow。 I think I just found a new author that I will need to stalk and read everything。 I obsessed over Tudor’s writing style—I feel like the dialogue was about as perfect and spot on as could be。 With thrillers, sometimes I get a little weary with the same old, same old, but this one had me floored—everything about it added the creepy factor with the mystery。 And Tudor pulled it all together flawlessly。 I kept thinking, “Wait, what about。。。” and then it would be addressed, but not in a happily-ever-after ending, but it wasn’t left hanging。 Exorcisms, martyrs, and village secrets—there’s not much NOT to like in this one!
