Summary

On Detective Matt Jones’s first night working Homicide in LA, he’s called to investigate a particularly violent murder case: a man has been gunned down in a parking lot off Hollywood Boulevard, his bullet-riddled body immediately pegged as the work of a serial robber who has been haunting the Strip for months。 Driven by the grisliness of the crime, Jones and his hot-tempered partner, Denny Cabrera, jump headfirst into the investigation。 But as Jones uncovers evidence that links the crime to a brutal, ritualized murder that occurred eighteen months prior, he begins to suspect that there’s more going on beneath the surface。 When Jones discovers shocking, deep-seated corruption; a high-level cover-up; and his own personal ties to the rising body count, he’s no longer sure he can trust anyone, even himself。

A good modern tragedyI don't understand why this book got so many bad reviews。 Guess it was because it didn't have a happy ending and wasn't humorous。 These days, few people want to read tragedies。 I'm not usually a big fan of police procedurals。 Most of them are boring, have no rogue cops, and could have been written as propaganda for the police unions。 But this book was an exception to that rule。 If anything, it went to the other extreme---instead of having no bad cops, it seemed to have almos A good modern tragedyI don't understand why this book got so many bad reviews。 Guess it was because it didn't have a happy ending and wasn't humorous。 These days, few people want to read tragedies。 I'm not usually a big fan of police procedurals。 Most of them are boring, have no rogue cops, and could have been written as propaganda for the police unions。 But this book was an exception to that rule。 If anything, it went to the other extreme---instead of having no bad cops, it seemed to have almost no good cops。 To me, that seemed more realistic, though most fans of police fiction will disagree。 。。。more

Lots of low ratings and I can’t understand why as I thought it was pretty darn good。 Kept me interested throughout the entire book。

Excellent Read City of Echoes was a terrific quarantine read。 It was a fast paced thriller at that had many twists。 I wanted a book that would shock and awe me, and I found that in City of Echoes。 I highly recommend it!

I hope there won't be a Book 2。 Too long and drawn out。 There never seems to be an end or conclusion。 Surprises weren't surprises but just drawn out and unnecessary words to make the count is my guess。 I hope there won't be a Book 2。 Too long and drawn out。 There never seems to be an end or conclusion。 Surprises weren't surprises but just drawn out and unnecessary words to make the count is my guess。 。。。more

What A StoryWell this book really grabbed me right away。 I liked the main character Matt Jones。 His barely controlled emotions added to the suspense。 The twists and turns of who did it was great。 The ending was not what I expected and immediately we t looking for a Book 2。 Because the story couldn't have that ending。 Thanks to the author for a great read What A StoryWell this book really grabbed me right away。 I liked the main character Matt Jones。 His barely controlled emotions added to the suspense。 The twists and turns of who did it was great。 The ending was not what I expected and immediately we t looking for a Book 2。 Because the story couldn't have that ending。 Thanks to the author for a great read 。。。more

Lots of plotEnjoyed this book and the many intertwining plots。 Characters are well developed and the book moves forward at a good pace。 The ending seemed to drag out。 Hoping book two brings everything together。

Ohhhh Robert Ellis does it again! It starts out as a typical Detective murder mystery but has such an intricate plot with twists I did NOT see coming- so much so that my jaw literally dropped while uncovering one of the mysteries。 I really can't wait to read the second in the series, especially with the open-ended conclusion of this one! VERY GOOD!I'm a new reader of Mr。 Ellis, on his own, without Patterson。 He didn't need him。 His books are exciting。 A certain element of luck rides with Matt Jones, though。 A couple of places were a little far fetched, like the murder scene he witnesses。 It would have gone done better if he videoed it with his phone。 He should have held his phone on them instead of his gun, that he didn't use。 VERY GOOD!I'm a new reader of Mr。 Ellis, on his own, without Patterson。 He didn't need him。 His books are exciting。 A certain element of luck rides with Matt Jones, though。 A couple of places were a little far fetched, like the murder scene he witnesses。 It would have gone done better if he videoed it with his phone。 He should have held his phone on them instead of his gun, that he didn't use。 。。。more

A few months ago, I read the first Jo Nesbo/Harry Hole mystery。 That book read as if the author wasn’t sure as if there would any more books in the series, so Nesbo threw all the stories at the book in the hope that some of those threads stuck for the next book。 This book is the same。 It read as if the author was almost a bit ADHD about it and he was thinking “Oh I’ll have this。。。 and that。。。 and this。。。 and that。。。”。This book starts with a detective being transferred to Hollywood Homicide, and A few months ago, I read the first Jo Nesbo/Harry Hole mystery。 That book read as if the author wasn’t sure as if there would any more books in the series, so Nesbo threw all the stories at the book in the hope that some of those threads stuck for the next book。 This book is the same。 It read as if the author was almost a bit ADHD about it and he was thinking “Oh I’ll have this。。。 and that。。。 and this。。。 and that。。。”。This book starts with a detective being transferred to Hollywood Homicide, and the evening before he is due to start his old detective partner is murdered。 He’s given the case (because that makes complete sense), and he sets off on the investigation。 During the investigation there are faulty investigations, iffy bosses, dubious partners, suspect work colleagues, PTSD, reminiscences about the war in the Afghan war, and unwanted attraction between detectives and suspects。 This leads to wild goose chases, and the fact that the book could have been finished 3 or 4 times and the reader would have been quite happy。 Every time the reader thinks “Phew it’s solved!”, he or she’s then going to “Hang on wait, what the。。。, there’s 50% (or 40% or 30%) of the book left, what’s going on?”。Anyhow, if you can put up with that, you’ll enjoy the book。 Personally, however, I found myself thinking, “Oh this is why I never finished this book for 9 years。” 。。。more

Captivating and well written。 This was a new author to me。 I definitely plan on reading his next one。 It has just enough twists and turns。

The story started out strong, grabbing the reader, and was engaging at times。 However, I found a lot elements to be unbelievable, which led to a number of "Oh really?" moments。 Probably better as a teleplay or movie where it is easier for the action to mask the weaknesses in other areas。For instance。。。(view spoiler)[Former undercover officer transferring into a LA homicide division as a detective gets called out the night before he is scheduled to start and had to cancel meeting up with a friend The story started out strong, grabbing the reader, and was engaging at times。 However, I found a lot elements to be unbelievable, which led to a number of "Oh really?" moments。 Probably better as a teleplay or movie where it is easier for the action to mask the weaknesses in other areas。For instance。。。(view spoiler)[Former undercover officer transferring into a LA homicide division as a detective gets called out the night before he is scheduled to start and had to cancel meeting up with a friend, "because they were short handed。" Well, maybe。 Homicide victim was said officer's best friend and also a police officer。 Okay, that set up the grabber where the reader discovers that the text he sent to the friend saying he couldn't meet for dinner because he had to work turns out to be meant for the friend that was just found murdered。 Okay, nice twist。The former undercover officer, seemly with anger issues and possibly suffering from PTSD, refuses to be reassigned and demands to be in on the action。 "IT'S MY CASE" he screams at his boss multiple times。 Really, that is not going to happen because he is too close to the victim and besides, he is going to be confined to desk duty or on suspension pending his disciplinary hearing。 Yet the commander yields。 The author does explain some of why that was happening later in the book, but really? New transfer screams at boss, is insubordinate on multiple occasions, and still gets to run the show? Later, he gets physical, assaulting other police officers, but that still is okay?Early in the book, the former narcotics undercover officer, now rookie homicide detective, gets interviewed by the person he is supposed to be interviewing。 That so does not sound like any detective that is worth his or her salt。In the midst of tragedy and loss, he finds himself drawn to the wife of his best friend (whose husband was just murdered, remember?) and they end up in bed and lovers。 Okay, I suppose this almost obligatory in many novels, but really? There are more examples I could cite, but I think that I have made my point。(hide spoiler)]There are a number of good passages that were real page turners, but overall, I can't see myself continuing with this series。 。。。more

Ok read。 This is personal preference, but there are things that could use less detail like describing food, drinks or other things not too important to the story and there are other things that could use more description like being shot at the end or other events in the story。 Overall it's an ok book。 Not sure about continuing the series though。 Ok read。 This is personal preference, but there are things that could use less detail like describing food, drinks or other things not too important to the story and there are other things that could use more description like being shot at the end or other events in the story。 Overall it's an ok book。 Not sure about continuing the series though。 。。。more

Good readGood, but not as great as his Lena Gamble Series, which I read first。 Matt Jones isn’t fleshed out as a character nearly as well as Lena。 Not as much intensity or action。 Nonetheless, a good book, just not GREAT。

The book had its ups and downs。 I never like when they make the police the bad guys。 For the first book in the series, this turned me off。 The new guy on the force becomes the good guy and take down those who are already there。 This is the storyline and has been overused。 But I just might read more of this author as there were parts I enjoyed。

Well I didn’t find that smidgen in this book。 。。。more
