Summary

Eversince I saw Jodorowsky's Dune documentary, some years ago, I became obsessed with finding and reading The Incal。 Finally, this year I got it。 And daaamn what a fine experience! The artwork, level of details, concept and the storytelling are top notch。 It allows you to dream and open your mind to let your imagination loose。 Loved it! Something of a disappointment for me。 I had high expectations with the teaming of Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius, but the story was bogged with trying to stuff too many ideas and concepts into one narrative。 The characterizations all felt too shallow。 Still, the world building was impressive and it was fun just to admire some of the art work。 Maybe I'll have a better appreciation of it in a future rereading。 Something of a disappointment for me。 I had high expectations with the teaming of Alejandro Jodorowsky and Moebius, but the story was bogged with trying to stuff too many ideas and concepts into one narrative。 The characterizations all felt too shallow。 Still, the world building was impressive and it was fun just to admire some of the art work。 Maybe I'll have a better appreciation of it in a future rereading。 。。。more

Whacky Fun。。。Or。。。Nonesensical。。。Or。。。Very Silly。。。I liked the art, though I admit I'm a sucker for Sci Fi。 But I would've enjoyed the story a bit more if DiFool wasn't such a DiFool。 Perhaps that was the point, but annoying isn't very identifiable。 And maybe it would've served the story better and destroying the darkness if he wasn't such an annoying door knob。 Or, there was another character that you really liked。 Whacky Fun。。。Or。。。Nonesensical。。。Or。。。Very Silly。。。I liked the art, though I admit I'm a sucker for Sci Fi。 But I would've enjoyed the story a bit more if DiFool wasn't such a DiFool。 Perhaps that was the point, but annoying isn't very identifiable。 And maybe it would've served the story better and destroying the darkness if he wasn't such an annoying door knob。 Or, there was another character that you really liked。 。。。more

Hmm。 So this is one of the main inspirations of all the horrible insipid Marvel Space adventures? It explains a lot。 This is pretentious drivel。 With kind of interesting detailed art。 The story is idiocy piled on idiocy。 And then it circles at the end。 Whatever。 I'm glad to have read this, I'm looking forward to talking about it, but I can't imagine re-reading it。 Hmm。 So this is one of the main inspirations of all the horrible insipid Marvel Space adventures? About halfway through the book, I felt like I was missing something and needed to reread this。 But that reread isn't going to happen any time soon。 So instead of a proper review, here are some random notes:-John DiFool has the best sperm in the universe。 Cosmic-level beings want to mate with him。-This was funnier than I thought it would be。-I'm a black-and-white art snob。 The first time I saw Moebius' linework with no rendering, I thought it was awful。 I have since broadened my horizons, and I g About halfway through the book, I felt like I was missing something and needed to reread this。 But that reread isn't going to happen any time soon。 So instead of a proper review, here are some random notes:-John DiFool has the best sperm in the universe。 Cosmic-level beings want to mate with him。-This was funnier than I thought it would be。-I'm a black-and-white art snob。 The first time I saw Moebius' linework with no rendering, I thought it was awful。 I have since broadened my horizons, and I get why other people like it, but it's still not my thing。 -There are only white people in this universe。 -Wait, I can no-prize this: As these planets become so overwhelmed technology, they have little to no exposure to the sun。 Therefore, over generations, they lose melanin content。 So the human race ends up a bunch of pasty albinos。-I probably should't have no-prized that。 I should have stayed judgy。-Moebius does a good job of drawing unique faces on everyone。-The Metabaron is the most useless and boring character in the book。 Why are all the spinoffs about him? Well this is just as bonkers as everyone always says it is。 A collaboration between The Holy Mountain's Alejandro Jodorowsky and French comics icon Moebius? It's a match made in a very specific type of heaven that someone dreamed up on ayahuasca right after they watched Star Wars。I had a great time descending into this Good Acid Trip with my ole friends John DiFool and his weird gang of folks emblematic of the Tarot or whatever。 This is a very spiritual book for sure, but never quite feels as blunt about it as something like Alan Moore's Promethea, as it often undercuts its sincerity with DiFool's detached personality。 This isn't really a book you read for the plot, which kind of leaps and lurches forward as new ideas occur to Jodorowsky, constantly getting more and more psychedelic。 It's really more a book you feel surrounded by, like you've been sucked into a world with laws of physics completely alien to you, and you just kind of have to adapt to them as they come at you。 It's almost disorienting at times, but it all feels so thoroughly realized (and Moebius's designs are so beautiful and detailed), that you just kind of have faith that what you're reading makes sense。 It's a weird sensation I haven't seen captured by many other comic book writers outside of Grant Morrison, and it takes a very particular kind of creative mind to bring a world like this to life。Is this book for everyone? Probably not! If you're looking for a straightforward sci-fi/fantasy, I think you may be disappointed with The Incal。 But if you're in the mood to kind of drift into an insane galaxy filled with incredible visuals and some of the strangest spiritual politics of all time, you'll be in for something very unique。 。。。more

I liked this book。 The beginning was fantastic。 The world building was great。 The variety of characters were interesting。 But the last third got a little much。 Especially the last 30 pages or so way to philosophical for my taste but the last page threw me for a loop。 Overall it was fun but and great if you like old school sci fi but I personally did not find it life changing

Jodorowsky is a visionary, but a cheap one。 ("technopope" indeed!) While Moebius is cheap in the good sense: quick, democratic, direct。 AJ's writing really drags this down。 Even so, there's a lot of "The Fifth Element" and "Idiocracy" in it: camp, ham futurism。Reading this after Transmetropolitan and The Filth makes its wild whimsies seem tame though。(Quibble: I can't stand AJ's exclamation marks。 Average of 8 per page here。 I assume his mind is one big !) aquela viagem subjetiva que eu gosto。 muitos significados mas dessa vez eu não escrevi nada no bloquinho。 não quero falar mais nada sobre o Incal aqui。 Jodorowsky é incrível e o primeiro contato com a arte de Moebius foi absurdamente foda。

An interesting scifi that follows almost a dreamlike story through a variety of beautifully illustrated settings。The colors are uncomplicatedly vivid and expressive timeless to any era of comics。

Just, wow。 What a trip!I'll be re-reading this for years to come, there is so much packed in here。 The reading experience is so dreamlike, and the art is incredible。 I think this is one of the rare examples where I could rate something this highly without being able to connect with any of the characters。 To me this book is all about the experience and the ideas, which it presents masterfully。 The fact that I didn't get completely lost during some of the crazy stuff in here is insane。Definitely n Just, wow。 What a trip!I'll be re-reading this for years to come, there is so much packed in here。 The reading experience is so dreamlike, and the art is incredible。 I think this is one of the rare examples where I could rate something this highly without being able to connect with any of the characters。 To me this book is all about the experience and the ideas, which it presents masterfully。 The fact that I didn't get completely lost during some of the crazy stuff in here is insane。Definitely not for everyone, but I had a great time with this one。 。。。more

So many mixed feelings—but as with Dune, it’s way too brilliant to not give it a 4。5-5。 Just not my personal preference/taste, but so ambitious in scope and concept。 Also one of the most mindboggling and bizarre things I’ve ever read。。。
