Summary

Hunted across the True Sea, haunted by the lives she took on the Fold, Alina must try to make a life with Mal in an unfamiliar land。 She finds starting new is not easy while keeping her identity as the Sun Summoner a secret。 She can’t outrun her past or her destiny for long。

The Darkling has emerged from the Shadow Fold with a terrifying new power and a dangerous plan that will test the very boundaries of the natural world。 With the help of a notorious privateer, Alina returns to the country she abandoned, determined to fight the forces gathering against Ravka。 But as her power grows, Alina slips deeper into the Darkling’s game of forbidden magic, and farther away from Mal。 Somehow, she will have to choose between her country, her power, and the love she always thought would guide her--or risk losing everything to the oncoming storm。

Middle books are not my favorite。 The beginning was exciting, the end was exciting, and the middle was a slog。 Alina and Mal are sooooo boring, but Nikolai saved this book for me。 I am very curious how they will wrap it all up。

"Watch yourself, Nikolai,” Mal said softly。 “Princes bleed just like other men。”Nikolai plucked an invisible piece of dust from his sleeve。 “Yes,” he said。 “They just do it in better clothes。" Ammetto di aver amato tutto, dall'inizio alla fine - soprattutto Nikolai - , anche se avrei voluto un po' di più l'Oscuro, nonostante sia stato sempre presente nei pensieri di Alina e insomma, avete capito。 Ma l'unico personaggio che ancora non ho del tutto capito se mi piace o semplicemente lo tollero。。。 è Mal。 Alina。 Una protagonista meravigliosa。 Così terribilmente umana, così piena di forza e timori。 Dubbi e audacia。In bilico tra ciò che è giusto e ciò che è sbagliato。Tra luce e oscurità。 Tra odio e amore。Tra bene e male。 Tra vita e morte。 "Why won’t you leave me alone?” I whispered one night as he hovered behind me while I tried to work at my desk。Long minutes passed。 I didn’t think he would answer。 I even had time to hope he might have gone, until I felt his hand on my shoulder。“Then I’d be alone, too," he said, and he stayed the whole night through, till the lamps burned down to nothing。" E lei e l'Oscuro。。。 così potenti。 Le loro scene sono incredibilmente potenti。 E vogliamo parlare dell'ultima scena insieme? Avevo le palpitazioni。 L'Oscuro mi affascina sempre di più e non vedo l'ora di leggere "Rovina e Ascesa" e assistere alla resa dei conti con il cuore in gola。P。S。 Nikolai。。。 dove sei? This was a good second book to the Shadow and Bone trilogy。 Overall I enjoyed this book, though at some points the story was moving a little to slowly。 The author did a very good job of building Alina's character。 This was a good second book to the Shadow and Bone trilogy。 Overall I enjoyed this book, though at some points the story was moving a little to slowly。 The author did a very good job of building Alina's character。 。。。more

This second book was SO MUCH better than the first。 Especially the dive into Ravka/Grisha politics。 I would have loved to see more of the Darkling, but we’ll blame that on my unhealthy obsession with villains。 ADORED the new band of characters brought in, specifically Nikolai。 No hesitation from Leigh Bardugo when it came to action and sacrifice。 And I was living for every second of it。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I loved how this is just the second book and I live the series already! I am really loving the writing style of it, and now we have Nikolai! Sturmhond really confused me at the start but it’s really great now I understand it! Also there’s more amplifiers?? That’s such a great concept! I do know what happens with them because I have read the 3rd book, but you will just have to wait and see! ;)Overall 3。8/5 I loved it, but ruin and rising really made this series great!

This was not for me。 Will I be reading the last in the series? No。 I just want to know what happens to Nikolai and that's it。 The main character is forgettable。 She acts like she's super powerful because she's the only Sun Summoner, but can't actually fight and hasn't learned to do more with her power besides manifest balls of light and do The Cut, which like, sure, is cool, but OBVIOUSLY not enough to defeat the Darkling, and instead of trying to learn new tricks, she just。。。doesn't, but still This was not for me。 Will I be reading the last in the series? Mal just straight up sucks and the main character's (what's her name?) relationship with the Darkling is just nonexistence。 Sure, they have similar powers, but that's literally it! Ugh, god。 This is just all the character tropes I normally like if they're done well (which, this is not)。 Thank you for coming to my rant。 。。。more

Nikolai Lanstov !! Love of my life !!!Also too much Mal, not enough of the Darkling or my girl Genya。 I really feel like this would have been a solid sequel, if the plot had moved forward at all in the middle third of the book。

This was an incredibly frustrating read。 The main characters are so unlikable to the point i am honestly shocked。To start of Alina, either she wants to be bad or she wants to be good。 Just pick a side and stick with it。 I don’t mind her going either way but it is like the author is too afraid to make the decision of what she wants Alina to be and as a reader that is frustrating。On the other hand, Mal as a character has gone so wrong。 I actually liked him in the first book but in this book his ac This was an incredibly frustrating read。 The main characters are so unlikable to the point i am honestly shocked。To start of Alina, either she wants to be bad or she wants to be good。 Just pick a side and stick with it。 I don’t mind her going either way but it is like the author is too afraid to make the decision of what she wants Alina to be and as a reader that is frustrating。On the other hand, Mal as a character has gone so wrong。 I actually liked him in the first book but in this book his actions were so out of character as well as made no sense。The relationship between Mal and Alina is incredibly frustrating as much as these two characters in this book。 Just for everyone’s sake break up and go their own separate ways。My review of this book in one word is FRUSTRATING。I also wished they focused of the story of the darkling rather than Mal and Alina。 。。。more

Not a single one of these characters has personality? Alina and Mal are wet blankets, the Darkling isn't really present for most of the book, and Nikolai is so conflicted about who he wants to be it gave me whiplash。 Not a single one of these characters has personality? I read Shadow and Bone awhile ago and I hopped on the bandwagon to finish the series before the Netflix show。 And now I remember why I didn't go out and finish the series right after finishing book one。I love the grishaverse and I love Bardugo's writing。 And I know these novels are from early in her writing career so they're not as good as her other novels, which doesn't mean I don't like them。 I just now know she can do so much better。 So maybe I'm being a little harsh。The storyline is creative I read Shadow and Bone awhile ago and I hopped on the bandwagon to finish the series before the Netflix show。 And now I remember why I didn't go out and finish the series right after finishing book one。I love the grishaverse and I love Bardugo's writing。 And I know these novels are from early in her writing career so they're not as good as her other novels, which doesn't mean I don't like them。 I just now know she can do so much better。 So maybe I'm being a little harsh。The storyline is creative and some of the characters are wildly captivating (hello Nickoli), but others are kind of boring and whiney (boo, Mal)。 The conversations are amusing and funny - I love the banter between Mal, Nickoli and Alina。 Love-triangles make for great conversations。 But I have no idea how I read this book so quickly! I felt like nothing happened。 The first book was great setting up for the world and the magic system but this book was setting up a big battle that。。。never happened? This book was more about Mal and Alina's friendship which honestly, I don't care too much about。 Mal is holding you back, girl! That being said I devoured the book in almost 2 sittings and I'm immediately picking up the next one, so I still love the series。 This book plays an important role, but not necessarily a fun one。 。。。more

Rating: 3。5/5 stars Review: Following my review of SAB, I will say that the second was a bit better, but not for the reasons you might think。 I did find it hard to get through this book because of how political and strategic everything was in this book to prepare for the attacks of the Darkling。 The only saving grace that I think got me through this book was Nikolai。 He is so witty, smart, strategic, and most importantly, funny in situations when it was boring and made it easier to keep reading。 Rating: 3。5/5 stars Review: Following my review of SAB, I will say that the second was a bit better, but not for the reasons you might think。 I did find it hard to get through this book because of how political and strategic everything was in this book to prepare for the attacks of the Darkling。 The only saving grace that I think got me through this book was Nikolai。 He is so witty, smart, strategic, and most importantly, funny in situations when it was boring and made it easier to keep reading。 I think Leigh Bardugo lacks what I think most YA authors have when writing and that is making the reader anticipate and *want* to continue reading to know what happens next。 I found myself lacking that motivation and only continued reading simply to finish the book。 It can get tiring waiting until the very last second of the book to have everything happen at once。 I didn't like it in SAB, and I didn't like it in this book and hope that this won't be the case for Rising and Ruin。 I have a hard time falling in love with many of the characters in this series, which almost never happens because I fall in love with many of them within the first/second book, and that comes to show that I'm just not a fan of Bardugo's style of writing。 I do have to say that I loved Nikolai and the twins, and although I want to love Mal, I found his whining and emotional rollercoaster annoying。 I do admire his loyalty to Alina, though。 Favorite Quote:"I was surrounded by people, but I almost felt like they couldn't see me, only what they needed from me。" 。。。more

I only have two reasons for giving this book three stars: Nikolai and that ending。 I really liked the ending where things went a bit more unexpectedly。 And yes Nikolai is such a great character, at least he kept me entertained throughout this book。I honestly might have liked this book more if there were less of Malina, like all that tension between Mal and Alina cause it was so boring and everyone knew what would happen to them。 But like also, Mal could die for all I care, I'm so not invested in I only have two reasons for giving this book three stars: Nikolai and that ending。 I really liked the ending where things went a bit more unexpectedly。 And yes Nikolai is such a great character, at least he kept me entertained throughout this book。I honestly might have liked this book more if there were less of Malina, like all that tension between Mal and Alina cause it was so boring and everyone knew what would happen to them。 But like also, Mal could die for all I care, I'm so not invested in him。 Will I read book 3?

I felt more chemistry between him and Alina more than the whole chemistry of Alina and Mal in the two books。 Nikolai won't even have to try and charm me I would lay my life down f This was honestly so much better than the first book。 I find this more exciting and the plot is actually finally going somewhere。 This is going to be a lengthy review but I don't care I will write it down while the story is still fresh in my mind。 What I love : 1。 Nikolai。 Nikolai。 Nikolai。 Do I even have to elaborate? I felt more chemistry between him and Alina more than the whole chemistry of Alina and Mal in the two books。 Nikolai won't even have to try and charm me I would lay my life down for him in an instant。 He easily became a favorite character and I would drop everything and everyone for him。 I would propose to him myself。2。 Alina character DevelopmentWe love good character development and I really think Alina’s was good。 She finally started thinking properly without the influence of Mal (although she occasionally still did which I am tired of rolling my eyes at) but she is getting smarter, more in tune with who she is。 I can also feel her insecurity wearing off (I thank Nikolai for that)。 No more annoying helpless little girl who gets swayed easily by men。 She is getting stronger and more independent and we always love a queen who is finally realizing her crown is sharp enough to kill。 3。 The twinsI am genuinely very interested in them。 They do not depend on their Grisha powers, can hold their own in a fight without it, and are undoubtedly loyal。 4。 The Castle Siege Epic。 I was reading through it like an arrow I didn’t even have time to mourn the fallen。 I love good writing, but I love it, even more, when the author hurts me。 5。 David。 Nadia。 Zoya。 And all the other Grisha who fought with Alina。 Finally getting a sneak peek into new characters。 I actually love Zoya and how haughty and smart she is。 I also love David but I still need more from all of them。 By more I mean more appearances。 6。 Darkling I really can’t find it in my heart to hate him just yet。 Burn me at the stake, I don’t care。 What I don’t like: 1。 Mal’s actions and emotions towards AlinaI don’t hate Mal do not get me wrong。 I love his character but separately。 As an individual。 Not when he is, as Nikolai my love has put it, playing the role of。 a jealous and possessive lover。 He could NEVER be happy or supportive of Alina (the healthy kind)。 It takes two to tango and it should always be 50/50 and he could not give Alina what Alina gave him all those years she hid her power。 2。 Mal and Alina Relationship One order of red flags, and a side of toxic dependency anyone? I would definitely pass。 I wish they had just stayed friends? but I understand it is a good plot。 It is sad to see people grow apart BECAUSE they are just growing in different directions。 It happens。 Even in real-life relationships。 You think this person would be the person you spend forever with when in reality it was just the person who was there at that time。 I won’t delve into that but I do hope that they would either call it quits, or grow back together in a HEALTHY way。 All in all, it was a wonderful book。 Better than the first and it’s got me riled up for the third。 。。。more
