Summary

First published in 1967 and re-issued in 1983, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream contains seven stories with copyrights ranging from 1958 through 1967。 This edition contains the original introduction by Theodore Sturgeon and the original foreword by Harlan Ellison, along with a brief update comment by Ellison that was added in the 1983 edition。 Among Ellison's more famous stories, two consistently noted as among his very best ever are the title story and the volume's concluding one, Pretty Maggie Moneyeyes

Since Ellison himself strongly resists categorization of his work, we won't call them science fiction, or SF, or speculative fiction or horror or anything else except compelling reading experiences that are sui generis。 They could only have been written by Harlan Ellison and they are incomparably original。

Definitely written well on drugs

Mostly very readable。 Somewhat dated in tone and style。 Mostly very misogynistic and bitter。 Cannot honestly recommend any of this at this point。

It's such an odd thing to finish a book and just kind of feel meh about it。 And then at the same time sitting in your bed for 30 minutes thinking about the stories because wait。。wtf did I just read? There's such a weird quality to these stories that leave you dumbfounded trying to process what just happened。 It's weird because I wasn't blown away by the book。 But as I finished it, I just sat there trying to comprehend what exactly about this book left me feeling so unsettled? This is a whole new level of despair and suffering。 I recommend it but it could have been more, a lot more。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Read it in one sitting and I loved it despite the Gory depictions, I would say this book is a mixture of existentialist-dystopian horror than it is sci-fi。 Would I recommend this book? Absolutely not, I don’t think anyone can tolerate a book that is essentially a pure description of human torture and detailed gory misanthropy。However, if you are a ”creepypasta” fan or a horror/gothic fan then I do think you might enjoy it。

I read it in one night after finding someone reference a quote from the game version。 The quote has become one of my favorites of all time, while the story has become a part of my most respected stories。 The author damns this book, and doesn't understand why people praise it over Grail, but I believe that's just artistic perfectionism。 I will admit that it isn't as revolutionary as I had thought it'd be, but it still is a great story despite being written in one night。 I read it in one night after finding someone reference a quote from the game version。 The quote has become one of my favorites of all time, while the story has become a part of my most respected stories。 The author damns this book, and doesn't understand why people praise it over Grail, but I believe that's just artistic perfectionism。 I will admit that it isn't as revolutionary as I had thought it'd be, but it still is a great story despite being written in one night。 。。。more

Kinda boring!

Robert Banovský

I found the title short story superb, others not so much。

I love Harlan Ellison’s prose。 Surrealist with a sense of wonder/horror like Ray Bradbury but mixed up with the gutter crassness of Garth Ennis。 Every one of the stories is fascinating and possess similar threads of loneliness, emptiness and betrayal。 Mr Ellison didn’t want his work to be confined to the label of science fiction, but for me, he’s one of the sci-fi greats。

Title story is a nice mind-bending piece of techno-terror that feels vaguely relevant to life today, on the cusp of an AI-driven paradigm shift。 The rest? Bukowski in Space looks intriguing on paper, but。。。。。。I guess I like my sci-fi like I like my eggs: (over) hard。

Wow。 What misogynistic drivel。 The title story is fantastic, but the rest is just pretentious, overly try-hard rubbish。

I didn't like the first story (like 109 years of torture, really?) although it is the most popular, neither the second one (what was that ending?), but then, by the third one I realized that these stories are not meant to be enjoyed。 And my opinion of the book changed radically towards the end。 With each story, different in its own way, a dark universe emerged。 All the characters have something in common: suffering, everyone is at the end of their powers, in a cruel world where there is no happy I didn't like the first story (like 109 years of torture, really?) although it is the most popular, neither the second one (what was that ending?), but then, by the third one I realized that these stories are not meant to be enjoyed。 And my opinion of the book changed radically towards the end。 With each story, different in its own way, a dark universe emerged。 All the characters have something in common: suffering, everyone is at the end of their powers, in a cruel world where there is no happy ending (I know what you're thinking, Harlan Ellison is so edgy, but I think he did a pretty good job。)。 It is definitely not a happy read, but it was something different, something you don't read in every book。 And the alien worlds! I'd say that he managed to write a very nice and complex SF in just a few pages。 And I recommend not only reading the first story, but the whole collection。 I think they all make sense read together。 And for me the first story is the one I liked the least ( I don't know why, and I don't know why it's so overrated。 Because of the sf theme and the game that appeared after it? Anyway, it has some elements of misogyny and everyone seems to have noticed that。) 。。。more

4。5 stars。 Super twisted stories, super great writing。 The writing was interesting, intense, elegant, creative, and jarring at once。 Really really enjoyed this collection。

The story itself is ehhhh, but the narration makes it absolutely unbearable。 Action scenes are read out drly, without passion, monotone the whole 45 minutes through。 Absolutely horrible。

When I started this book I was unaware of Harlan Ellison's reputation, but after a couple of the stories in this I looked him up and was not surprised by what I found。 That said, he doesn't hide who he is and says plenty about himself in the story introductions to help fill in the blanks。I'm a firm believer that problematic artists make interesting work that should be analysed fairly, but my fair analysis is that he's a sloppy writer with incredible ideas tainted by horrific ideals and messy, un When I started this book I was unaware of Harlan Ellison's reputation, but after a couple of the stories in this I looked him up and was not surprised by what I found。 That said, he doesn't hide who he is and says plenty about himself in the story introductions to help fill in the blanks。I'm a firm believer that problematic artists make interesting work that should be analysed fairly, but my fair analysis is that he's a sloppy writer with incredible ideas tainted by horrific ideals and messy, unengaging prose that makes reading his work feel like wading through glue。 。。。more

Pre-lockdown: me and a friend used to entertain ourselves by watching interviews with Harlan Ellison on Youtube, so I was able to imagine his kerazy voice in my head when reading this。 A lot of reviews on here are saying that the title story is the best, which is fine because that's the story that's the most iconic, and the one that the collection is named after。 I'm not sure what people are bloody expecting。 Also I've read some critique on Ellison's content ie。 misogyny, racism, sexual violence Pre-lockdown: me and a friend used to entertain ourselves by watching interviews with Harlan Ellison on Youtube, so I was able to imagine his kerazy voice in my head when reading this。 A lot of reviews on here are saying that the title story is the best, which is fine because that's the story that's the most iconic, and the one that the collection is named after。 I'm not sure what people are bloody expecting。 Also I've read some critique on Ellison's content ie。 misogyny, racism, sexual violence etc。 and yes it has all of this, and it doesn't spare you the details。 But one of the big themes in Ellison's work is that it does hurts people。。。 it's not Quentin Tarrantino shooting people to a motown soundtrack。 It's not cool。 This is great book from a very intense, conscientious writer。 Look forward to checking more out。 。。。more

The title story is probably the most interesting, but this is a great collection of short stories。

He withdrew, murmuring to hell with you。 And added, brightly, but then you’re there, aren’t you。Full Disclosure I did not finish Little Maggie Moneyeyes the last story of this collection。 I couldn't because that was the point where the blatant misogyny got the best of me。 I could not finishThat being said, I will give Harlan Ellison one thing。 He can write for the most part I enjoyed the first three stories of the collection even if they left me with a gaping hole of darkness in my chest。 Where He withdrew, murmuring to hell with you。 And added, brightly, but then you’re there, aren’t you。Full Disclosure I did not finish Little Maggie Moneyeyes the last story of this collection。 I couldn't because that was the point where the blatant misogyny got the best of me。 I could not finishThat being said, I will give Harlan Ellison one thing。 He can write for the most part I enjoyed the first three stories of the collection even if they left me with a gaping hole of darkness in my chest。 Where it started to all go wrong was around World of the Myth this was where the full misogyny was on display。 Victim blaming, and the like。 I can forgive some things I forgave a lot for this book because I wanted to enjoy it。 And hell I enjoyed the titular story and the two stories after it Big Sam was My Friend was a heart wrenching but all too familiar tale of how money can drive us to forget our morals。Eyes of Dust was。。。。 OK a little too bleak but i got the point he was going for, that is one thing i can say about the author I get why he writes what he writes, however i can not in good faith say that I enjoyed the stories after that it just went down hill and i could not finish the last oneI would not recommend the full book, I would recommend the titular story and if that was all I was reviewing this review would have been glowing, but it is not because I wanted to read all of themI will also say if Mr。 Ellison was still alive I'd probably have a drink with him, because outside of his stories in the little in betweens I could see a genuine if very cynical human。 。。。more

Great collection of stories from one of the greatest short story and creative writers。 A board span of genres, anyone who likes shorts, this is a must read。

Actively horrible。 In every possible way。 Poor writing。 Poor choices。 Reading the title story made me want to buy a plane ticket to San Franscisco, take an Uber to the Golden Gate Bridge, and leap to an early demise。 Highly recommended for fans of gore, rape, misogyny, torture, and everything terrible in this world。 Negative one star。

Read to about page ten。 At that point a (black)man that had been partially turned into a monkey and his women companion was insatiably in love with his over sized penis, this is bizarre as they are being tortured by a pissed off AI and would not have sex on the mind。 The other characters (all male) the went on to attack her for, as far as I can figure out, having an opinion。 I stopped reading at that point。 I have no mouth but I must scream is a highly regarded short story about an AI gone crazy Read to about page ten。 At that point a (black)man that had been partially turned into a monkey and his women companion was insatiably in love with his over sized penis, this is bizarre as they are being tortured by a pissed off AI and would not have sex on the mind。 The other characters (all male) the went on to attack her for, as far as I can figure out, having an opinion。 I stopped reading at that point。 I have no mouth but I must scream is a highly regarded short story about an AI gone crazy。 It’s significant for creating this trope before computers ever really existed。 Unfortunately, for the reasons layed out in the first paragraph, I’m never going to finish it。Can’t recommend。 。。。more

I'm sure these stories were interesting for their time, but each one felt like it was trying way too hard, and not succeeding。 I couldn't shake the feeling that the author felt he was really clever, and wanted the reader to recognize it。 I know Ellison engaged in troubling behavior in real-life, and I can't say I'm surprised。 You can read his disrespect for women in the stories。 I'm sure these stories were interesting for their time, but each one felt like it was trying way too hard, and not succeeding。 I couldn't shake the feeling that the author felt he was really clever, and wanted the reader to recognize it。 I know Ellison engaged in troubling behavior in real-life, and I can't say I'm surprised。 You can read his disrespect for women in the stories。 。。。more
