really bad/lazy, but would actually be far inferior to my own past habits。 So, what I mean specifically, is that a few times in this volume it is called to our attention that Kazuma in his old world used to sleep in until -noon-。 In my freshman year of college, I would skip class and sleep from 8am to 6pm。 What the fuck, Kazuma。 I -was- in Education and was more of a layabout than you The worst specifically, is that a few times in this volume it is called to our attention that Kazuma in his old world used to sleep in until -noon-。 In my freshman year of college, I would skip class and sleep from 8am to 6pm。 What the fuck, Kazuma。 I -was- in Education and was more of a layabout than you。 How the fuck am I supposed to self-insert with so inept a NEET?Anyway, this volume follows the same basic structure as the previous two。 There's a major plot that takes up a few chapters, but otherwise each chapter feels "episodic," and it manages to end in something of a "boss fight" regardless。 In this case, Kazuma was arrested for having Wiz use Random Teleport on the coronatite in Destroyer, which ended up in a lord's mansion, blowing it up, as seen in the previous book。 So Kazuma is on trial (which allows Best Girl Aqua to make Ace Attorney and Danganronpa references), during which we see the prosecuting lord act fidgety toward Darkness。 Darkness acts to exonerate Kazuma, and so disappears from the action for a while。 The second chapter is a seemingly unrelated story about an encounter with another Crimson Magic Clan girl, Yunyun。 At some point, there is mention of exploding monsters, but that seems to have nothing to do with anything (I'd initially thought it was related to the spell Explosion, as if Yunyun accidentally brought something with her, but no dice), but kinda glaringly feels like foreshadowing。 So the third chapter ties back to the first, revealing Darkness to be the daughter of another lord, her real name being Lalatina Ford Dustiness (I'm pretty sure that was Yen Press's ordering of her names, but everything I see on Google uses like three different variations。。。), the cuteness of her given name bringing her much embarrassment。 She made a deal with the other lord to give him anything he asks for, the main party thought she was getting raped or something the past couple days, but the guy just wanted to marry her to his own son, who turns out to be a good guy。 Kazuma (and kinda Aqua) just wants to marry Darkness off to get rid of one of the "problem children" in his party, and so conspires to send her away, which eventually backfires by making him and Darkness look closer than just friends。 And so the last chapter features another Demon General who is seemingly a chill dude, but provokes Kazuma and Darkness just because, possessing Darkness with his mask (his real body) and having her fight a bunch of random Adventurers for a second before Kazuma does something to save the day again (well, Megumin casts Explosion)。 The main thing linking the chapters is the presence of Sena, the prosecutor from Kazuma's trial, who keeps hanging around to make sure Kazuma isn't an agent of the Demon Lord。 So of course the defeat of the general Vanir proves his innocence。 Roll credits (or whatever, it's a book)。Through this volume, we get a bit more development for Darkness。 Kind of。 We get more detail on her background, with the sense that maybe her masochism is a result of the great freedom she had being raised by a loving father who respects her too much to lay down too many rules。 But this isn't really dwelt on too much, and it probably doesn't matter anyway because this is a comedy novel and the silliness takes priority over anything too serious。 Kazuma's narration makes a few more comments about how he's totally not in love with Darkness, and/or he's attracted to her body but her personality is too much for him, &c。 So when the marriage talks fall through, there is a slight push toward Kazuma x Darkness, and the lack of real development/screentime for Aqua or Megumin in the same volume allows further support (though I've read Megumin becomes the main girl after a while, so I don't know)。As for the "more important" things, Darkness is just cute as fuck。 I'm too lazy to read my earlier reviews to see if I may have written something similar in the past, but I feel I'm swinging toward liking Darkness most。 I guess I agree with Kazuma that Darkness's masochism is certainly off-putting。 Maybe it would be one thing if she just -said- this and that and got all hot and bothered, but we've seen her actually try to get attacked by monsters in earlier volumes, and that's kinda weird。 Well, it's weird regardless, but a non-active masochism could just pass as a fetishistic quirk。 Or something。 Anyway, I feel Darkness benefits most from Mishima's artstyle, especially when we see her dressed up as a noble, with her hair braided and her armor left at home。And that's a strange thing I've just noticed recently, as regards Mishima's art。 There is a degree of eroticism to the character designs, but never to the point of anything being overly-emphasized, and Akatsuki's prose is mild itself when it comes to "fanservice。" There are a couple times in this volume where Kazuma notes the "ero-ness" of Darkness's body, but nothing is stated specifically。 We are left to remember that her breasts are big, based on Volume 1, and we can see their shape in her few illustrations。 What's particularly odd is that I've seen Yunyun as having huge boobs before I read this volume, yet the art seems to play them down somewhat。 Interestingly, she is shown to have pretty thicc thighs, which is true of Aqua as well, but the many illustrations of Aqua in the volume tend to reveal the great size of her own breasts, actually more so than Darkness's。 What's kinda funny is that Yunyun is also thirteen, like Megumin, and there's a brief comedic scene where Kazuma takes a bath with Megumin because she's too flat for it to mean anything to him, but then he finds out she turns fourteen next month, and is thus older than the more mature-looking Yunyun (who is only ever mentioned as "pretty" and similarly mild terms, rather than pronouncing anything more explicitly regarding her figure), and if you do a Google Images search of Yunyun right now you'd likely see Studio DEEN's anime version first, which would show off her big tits, as if that's an important quality to her character, particularly in contrast to the flat chest of her senior Megumin, but no such dynamic is really touched upon here。 Megumin is sensitive about her undeveloped body, Kazuma fears being called a lolicon by Aqua for bathing with Megumin, but no one really points out Yunyun's big fat anime titties。I'm getting distracted, as is common when I review manga and light novels。 I'll close with pointing out that Yunyun is pretty cute for being arguably more chunnibyou than Megumin。 She may not wear an unnecessary eyepatch, but the fact that she considers herself a "rival" to someone who doesn't care reminds me of One Punch Man's Speed o' Sound Sonic or someone like that。 Pretty funny。 。。。more

While I enjoyed the first couple of light novels, I found I liked this one more。 Perhaps because it has more Darkness in it and I enjoy her character。 Whatever the case, if you're familiar with the anime/manga then you know what's going to happen and it really isn't all that different。 There may be some details, but big picture is the same。 I just found this one more fun。Verdict: If you want more Konosuba -- this is it。 If you started with the Light Novels -- keep going。 If you're looking for a While I enjoyed the first couple of light novels, I found I liked this one more。 Perhaps because it has more Darkness in it and I enjoy her character。 Whatever the case, if you're familiar with the anime/manga then you know what's going to happen and it really isn't all that different。 There may be some details, but big picture is the same。 I just found this one more fun。Verdict: If you want more Konosuba -- this is it。 If you started with the Light Novels -- keep going。 If you're looking for a place to start -- as always, start at the beginning be it the LN, the manga or the anime。 。。。more

ideally she'd also be caught by the demon lord and tortured by monsters as well)。The whole story culminates in meeting the new Demon army member, Vanir。 He's a doll maker, making explosive dolls that unfortunately for our companions cause havoc around a cave they previously visited (Kazuma thinks Aqua caused the appearance of monsters outside the cave initially because she had stupidly placed and not removed a warding circle in a major part of the cave, potentially pushing monsters out like she did at the graveyard)。 Darkness' "M" tendencies along with her defense come in handy here, her taking damage from the explosive dolls while our party (and Sena + her group of protectors) slowly finds their way to the source。 After this, the battle becomes tense as Kazuma tries to outsmart our new Demon, Vanir, a man who can forsee and read the minds of those around him (even reading Darkness and Kazuma's unspoken lust for something to happen between them)。Let's get to those spoiler elements。 So the trial is a huge cluster。 (view spoiler)[ Kazuma is going to go to jail, and they suggest there could be a dark magic user manipulating the scenario (or that the noble whose home was destroyed is intimidating the judge and prosecutor)。 Ultimately, Megumin's level of defense isn't enough to win against insurmountable odds, and it takes Darkness standing up and offering herself to the Nobleman to turn the tide。 The Nobleman seems to recognise her, and it isn't until much later in the plot that we see why。 Darkness is a daughter of nobility, daughter to the Dustiness family。 They're known all over the country, very rich and influential。 Darkness unfortunately has a devoted dad who gave her anything she wanted, too much freedom, and so Darkness craved a less free / open environment (hence her desire to become under a Demon's strict rule。。。 Umm)。 The Nobleman whose house was destroyed offers her his son in marriage。 Our heroes try unsuccessfully to get the marriage proposal to go ahead and be accepted (because that would lead to Darkness, a big headache, leaving the party; and it'd be good for her too they think)。 Darkness finally defeats the noble by showing him that she has the resolve of a true "M" tendency figure, and that only someone with Kazuma's level of lecherousness can defeat her (umm)。 Oh, and Kazuma promises to do something horrible to Darkness if he defeats her (which he does with drain touch, sapping her energy)。 What he decides on is revealing her true name to the rest of the guild, Lalatina Ford Dustiness。 Definitely not what she wanted or expected。 (hide spoiler)]It was a solid chapter。 Character introductions were a bit sudden。 Sena, the prosecutor, is not really super likable yet。 Yunyun is tough to read, and not too developed yet。 Vanir was pretty interesting though, and adds a nice element (someone who can read the future to an extent。。。 Or is he just good at reading people, and pushing prophecies he desires to happen?)。 Wiz gets mentioned a lot this chapter, but doesn't appear too much。 She's on the cover of volume 4, so I'm hoping she's more involved there。 Megumin doesn't really shine too much in this one either (I think there's a random bath scene between her and Kazuma this chapter, and she gets a cat)。 Aqua is Aqua, she's as involved as she usually is。 。。。more

I am constantly pleased with how the anime for Konosuba stayed true to the light novels, and I was very happy to see the events I had watched in the anime play out in this light novel。 As always, there is a certain amount that can be done better in print form vs animated, and this novel gives certain insight into everyone's thought processes and gives a better world view of the events that only got a glossing over in the anime。 At this point, with this being the third book in the series, we are I am constantly pleased with how the anime for Konosuba stayed true to the light novels, and I was very happy to see the events I had watched in the anime play out in this light novel。 As always, there is a certain amount that can be done better in print form vs animated, and this novel gives certain insight into everyone's thought processes and gives a better world view of the events that only got a glossing over in the anime。 At this point, with this being the third book in the series, we are starting to see some major character development in our favorite quartet of characters。 They are becoming richer people, with more developed personalities, goals and reasons for doing what they do。 This novel plays heavily on Darkness and her history, and it really helps to make her more believable as a person and less like just a horny crusader。 It is nice to see, and her relationships with her party members become stronger through the various trials of this novel。 The administrator character sent to prosecute the party is a little tropish and can be found in a LOT of anime fiction, so I was a bit disappointed with her, especially since she seems to take the more comical route that in 'normal' fiction, she would be that villain who basically fights the party at every turn until they do something stupid and cause a massive disaster the heroes have to solve。 (think the politician who shuts down the ghost containment in Ghostbusters, etc) That said, having her actually turn around and LIKE the protagonists was a nice change and I did like the arch her character took。 Lastly, the writing in this light novel is stronger。 In the writer's afterword, he talks about how he wonders how his works translated to other languages as they had started doing that。 I have to say, at this point, it looks like the translators have found their ground with his writing and are doing a fantastic job translating his work!In the end, I really enjoyed this book。 It had lots of action, even more comedy, and the characters I have grown to love over the series。 Despite the addition of a few new faces, the author never loses sight of the quartet that keeps things interesting and moving。 Well worth the read and definitely a series I would recommend。 。。。more

This was an odd read, the first half I actually found pretty boring。 The "trial" and long drawn out reveal of Darkness's backstory really didn't need to be 100 pages。 It turned away from the pseudo fantasy RPG story the book was based on, and turned it into a bland comedy of errors。 If this had continued it would have rated a 1 star; however, the second half jumps back into the core that make the series enjoyable, dungeons, goofy monsters, with some hilarious situations mixed in。 I wish they had This was an odd read, the first half I actually found pretty boring。 The "trial" and long drawn out reveal of Darkness's backstory really didn't need to be 100 pages。 It turned away from the pseudo fantasy RPG story the book was based on, and turned it into a bland comedy of errors。 If this had continued it would have rated a 1 star; however, the second half jumps back into the core that make the series enjoyable, dungeons, goofy monsters, with some hilarious situations mixed in。 I wish they had cut the trial and other BS down quite a bit, and fit more of this style of stuff in。 Probably the weakest of the three books in this series, still an enjoyable read, if you can push thru a bland boring start 。。。more

This book contains events still covered by the anime。 I think the next volume will be the last of that。 Starting out with the first volume, I wasn't quite sure how well these books would hold up after having already watched many of the events。 The comedy is often physical, but the author and translator both did a great job of conveying the personalities through action very well in the text。Looking forward to reaching new material in a couple books。 This book contains events still covered by the anime。 I think the next volume will be the last of that。 Starting out with the first volume, I wasn't quite sure how well these books would hold up after having already watched many of the events。 The comedy is often physical, but the author and translator both did a great job of conveying the personalities through action very well in the text。Looking forward to reaching new material in a couple books。 。。。more

Oh, this got fun again! Darkness is way more twisted than I had first thought。 She's right out insane, even monsters think she is crazy, which says a lot about her。 We discover many things about her in this book, a lot of them rather surprising, so it was great, I feel that with each book we get to know Kazuma's party members a bit more。 There's also more information about Megumin's past and her。。。 'unusual' companion。 I had a good time with the book, and I really look forward to number 4。 Oh, this got fun again! Fantastic story and very comedic。 The whole Konosuba series is enjoyable to read and it is filled with laughter。 The flow of the story is easy and the translation seems pretty good, no major errors that pull you out of the story。 I am certainly going to keep reading this series till it finishes。

This series is just getting better and better。 Being a big fan of the Anime at first I was a bit disappointed with the novels, but at this point I would say that the third novel is superior to its animated counterpart。
