Soldier。
Summoner。 Saint。 Orphaned and expendable, Alina Starkov is a soldier who knows she may not survive her first trek across the Shadow Fold--a swath of unnatural darkness crawling with monsters。 But when her regiment is attacked, Alina unleashes dormant magic not even she knew she possessed。

Now Alina will enter a lavish world of royalty and intrigue as she trains with the Grisha, her country's magical military elite--and falls under the spell of their notorious leader, the Darkling。 He believes Alina can summon a force capable of destroying the Shadow Fold and reuniting their war-ravaged country, but only if she can master her untamed gift。

As the threat to the kingdom mounts and Alina unlocks the secrets of her past, she will make a dangerous discovery that could threaten all she loves and the very future of a nation。

It was so weird to read this knowing the implications for a much larger world。 I’m not sure how I would’ve felt if this was a book I read alone before the rest of the series was in existence but overall I think it was an OK start to the Grisha verse。 It seems like the world building is slow and not too in your face, the pacing was a little off, but I’m ready to pick up siege and storm right away! I think it’s a 3。5 ⭐️ for me, and I just can’t freaking wait till I can jump into SOC AND CK!!! 😭

took me a while to finish this book cus i kept reading others in between but i was surprised by how much i actually enjoyed reading it。 i loved seeing alina’s development from the beginning of the book til the end。 it really was great to see her realise that her power belongs to her nonetheless and see her fight against the darkling and other grisha。 idk what to expect from the other book since many say it’s pretty boring but we’ll see! still liked soc/ck a lot more, the storyline was much more took me a while to finish this book cus i kept reading others in between but i was surprised by how much i actually enjoyed reading it。 i loved seeing alina’s development from the beginning of the book til the end。 it really was great to see her realise that her power belongs to her nonetheless and see her fight against the darkling and other grisha。 idk what to expect from the other book since many say it’s pretty boring but we’ll see! still liked soc/ck a lot more, the storyline was much more interesting to me and i fell in love with the characters easier than with the characters here but i’m pretty sure it’s gonna happen throughout the series。 cannot wait!also need genya x david。 asap。 。。。more

alina really pissed me off sometimes, overall it was a fine YA high fantasy novel。 You can tell it was one of the first of its kind because its a little bit unpolished in in comparison to SOC + Crooked kingdom。 Will still continue on because I want to know what happens + finish this series before the netflix show drop

The Darkling is the only person I think who had any real story to tell。 The Sun Summoner is just the same conventional heroin with the same old story of just and duty。 I don't actually know what the purpose of this book was。 Maybe reading the rest of the series will be fun, I hope。 The Darkling is the only person I think who had any real story to tell。 The Sun Summoner is just the same conventional heroin with the same old story of just and duty。 I don't actually know what the purpose of this book was。 Maybe reading the rest of the series will be fun, I hope。 。。。more

The beginning was a slog and the characters had a lot of wasted potential (so far), but the second half??? Lowkey a bop 🤭

This was SO fun! It was very tropey, but in the best way。 The unique world balanced out some of the more predictable parts for me。 I enjoyed the writing and the pacing too。 On to the next!

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Honestly loved this book, but contrary to what everyone else believes I think Mal was the toxic one out of him and the Darkling。 Mal kept switching up on Alina, and he was not a good person。 He seemed like he manipulated her the majority if the time, and although the Darkling wasn’t great either, I think that he really cared about Alina。 Reading the next book tomorrow so we’ll see if my opinion changes or not!

2。5 stars。 I enjoyed this! I can't give a higher rating as the writing was not great and the pacing was all over the place but the world building is incredible。 I read a review that said if you are into fantasy lite you will enjoy this and that is definitely what it felt like, just an easy peasy fantasy。 2。5 stars。 I enjoyed this! Don’t know。 Time to go rea I don’t understand the hate for Mal。I completely understand why Alina chose to run from The Darkling。 Why she chose Mal over The Darkling。 I understand why she started to hate him。 She acted like a real person。I don’t think no sane person would willingly date a mass murderer who would enslave them。 Someone who is that mad to the point where he would destroy the world if he did not get what he wanted。 Or maybe I’m missing something。 Does Mal get more annoying in Book 2? He amado leer esto, ¡ Enserio !

I have limited knowledge of Russian culture but someone please let me know。The ships。 Ah, where do I begin? Read more about my thoughts here: (view spoiler)[I'm not sure why the Darkling is super hyped and don't get me wrong, I was completely shocked at the Darklina scenes, but I just think that Darklina felt forced。 The overall love triangle felt forced too。 The Darkling is the mysterious bad boy, and I was highkey convinced Darklina would be endgame but MAL CAME THROUGH。 The mysterious bad boy always gets the girl and I just wanted the best friend to win one time。 I have to say though, I would've like to see more Malina development and I really enjoyed reading about their dynamic。 (hide spoiler)]Overall, it was an enjoyable book, but I think it's somewhat overhyped。 The writing is enjoyable and it's super easy to get into this book so if you're looking for something like that, I'd recommend checking it out。 I am really looking forward to the next few books and the Netflix adaptation。 。。。more

Bardugo goes deep into setting the stage and building the world behind the Grisha Universe in the first book of the trilogy。 As with most of her writing, it took me over half of the book to finally connect with the characters。 Once I got there, I was very ready to jump into book 2。

To be honest, I was expecting a little bit more。 It was not bad by any means, and I enjoyed it a lot, but I'm becoming more aware that I am aging out of Young Adult books。 It's a fun, quick read。 I enjoyed the world building and characters。 I read this mostly because of the TV show coming out so I am still super excited about it。 Overall, I don't regret reading it but I probably won't read it again。 And yes, I will be reading the rest of the series。 To be honest, I was expecting a little bit more。 It was not bad by any means, and I enjoyed it a lot, but I'm becoming more aware that I am aging out of Young Adult books。 It's a fun, quick read。 I enjoyed the world building and characters。 I read this mostly because of the TV show coming out so I am still super excited about it。 Overall, I don't regret reading it but I probably won't read it again。 And yes, I will be reading the rest of the series。 。。。more
