Summary

When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile。 Disguised among the "mundys," their name for normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters created their own secret society that they call Fabletown。 From their exclusive luxury apartment buildings on Manhattan's Upper West Side, these creatures of legend must fight for their survival in the new world。

Fables is the winner of 14 Eisner Awards and is one of the most enduring Vertigo titles ever。 Here, in this new, 10th anniversary edition, is a newly colored 8-page story from the Fables prose work Peter & Max: A Fables Novel, as well as a beautiful new cover from series artist Mark Buckingham。

Collecting: Fables #1-5

This is such an interesting take on fairy tale characters were all familiar with from our childhood。 I read this trade years ago and I’ve enjoyed reading it again。 Can’t wait for the next volume。

Fables Vol。 1Not the usual book I read but took a chance and like it。 I like it enough to read the next book or two。

For such a great story, a lot of audience must read your book。 You can publish your work on NovelStar Mobile App。

A decent read, one that actually surprises the reader with detail and nuances that many comics would miss of this type。 The combination of fairy tales and New York is an interesting mix, and throw-in a gum-show detective… you have an interesting premise。Overall, it is good but not great。 I do recommend giving it a try for something a little different or something that is unique mix of things。

Smart concept, well-drawn, compelling storylines。

Ottimo!

Liked the concept and some of the characters but not others so it made for a slow read at times。 Not something I expected in a graphic novel。

Enjoyable read - feel like this series will imoprove with the next volumes, this one felt like it just had that first-volume-exposition job。 If you like modern fairytales, Once, or cosmopolitan dramas, hit this up。

This is my second time reading this volume, the first time being around 8-10 years ago。 I absolutely adore the concept - fairy tale characters living together in New York after being driven out of their home by an as yet unidentified monster known only as "The Adversary"。 There is also a short story at the end of the volume which serves as a prequel and describes how Bigby was convinced by Snow to join the others even though he was a dangerous outcast。 This is my second time reading this volume, the first time being around 8-10 years ago。 I absolutely adore the concept - fairy tale characters living together in New York after being driven out of their home by an as yet unidentified monster known only as "The Adversary"。 There is also a short story at the end of the volume which serves as a prequel and describes how Bigby was convinced by Snow to join the others even though he was a dangerous outcast。 。。。more

I wanted to love this。 I love twisted fairytales。 I love modernized fairytales。 I hated it。 I finished it because I always do, but it was awful。

3。75 out of 5I always find it quite hard to review books, especially when it comes to comics because there's not that much to say。 Fables was definitely quite a high level comic, I loved the illustrations and the way it gripped me from the beginning。 The language was definitely very sophisticated。As someone who loves fairytale retellings and the show 'Once upon a time' this topic very much interests me so my review might be slightly biased, but the comic was definitely a good way to spend my fre 3。75 out of 5I always find it quite hard to review books, especially when it comes to comics because there's not that much to say。 Fables was definitely quite a high level comic, I loved the illustrations and the way it gripped me from the beginning。 The language was definitely very sophisticated。As someone who loves fairytale retellings and the show 'Once upon a time' this topic very much interests me so my review might be slightly biased, but the comic was definitely a good way to spend my free time。 。。。more

Because I don't often read "adult" comics, I was a bit intimated by the artwork, however after few pages I started to really enjoy reading it。 I like the world setup, the plot, I even started to like the artwork itself in the end。 The humor and characters were great, I cannot wait for the next volumes。 Because I don't often read "adult" comics, I was a bit intimated by the artwork, however after few pages I started to really enjoy reading it。 I like the world setup, the plot, I even started to like the artwork itself in the end。 The humor and characters were great, I cannot wait for the next volumes。 。。。more

Review for the first storyline „The Adversary“ which spans across multiple volumes。Compelling stories about legendary, mostly Western, fairytale characters trying to cope in the real world after having been driven out from their homelands by the Adversary。 Seriously, these stories contain everything—drama, intrigue, crime, suspense, mystery and epic worldbuilding for the mature reader。 The only major problem I have with this series is the inconsistent use of magic。 There seem to be no rules and Review for the first storyline „The Adversary“ which spans across multiple volumes。Compelling stories about legendary, mostly Western, fairytale characters trying to cope in the real world after having been driven out from their homelands by the Adversary。 Seriously, these stories contain everything—drama, intrigue, crime, suspense, mystery and epic worldbuilding for the mature reader。 The only major problem I have with this series is the inconsistent use of magic。 There seem to be no rules and limits to magic and often no cost。 Also, characters die and get resurrected because the plot demands it—which renders any death meaningless。This series is excellent for the first 50 issues or so。 Definitely give this one a read。 。。。more

I read this ages ago, but eventually lost track with the series due to numerous spin-offs and varying quality。 I'm attempting to re-read this in its entirety for the first time (if that makes any sense), but reading the first volume, I can already see the unevenness that eventually led to my quitting the first time around。 The world-building and character interactions are still fun, and I've got nothing better to do, so I'm still strapping myself in for the entire ride for better or worse。 I read this ages ago, but eventually lost track with the series due to numerous spin-offs and varying quality。 I'm attempting to re-read this in its entirety for the first time (if that makes any sense), but reading the first volume, I can already see the unevenness that eventually led to my quitting the first time around。 The world-building and character interactions are still fun, and I've got nothing better to do, so I'm still strapping myself in for the entire ride for better or worse。 。。。more

Fables tries too hard to be edgy without actually doing anything special。 I also can't get past the fact that they combined characters; Snow White and the seven dwarves is not the same Snow White as Snow White and Rose Red, and the Big Bad Wolf from Red Riding Hood is not the one that blew the pigs house down。 (view spoiler)[we find out in volume 2 it's the same Snow White so that Rose Red can be jealous of her popularity which was stupid and so fucking childish。 (hide spoiler)] Also, I called t Fables tries too hard to be edgy without actually doing anything special。 I also can't get past the fact that they combined characters; Snow White and the seven dwarves is not the same Snow White as Snow White and Rose Red, and the Big Bad Wolf from Red Riding Hood is not the one that blew the pigs house down。 (view spoiler)[we find out in volume 2 it's the same Snow White so that Rose Red can be jealous of her popularity which was stupid and so fucking childish。 (hide spoiler)] Also, I called the murder mystery, and how it was done, and why it was done so I don't know if I'm just really clever or if that's indicative of not-so-great writing。 *hint: I'm not that clever* 。。。more

Read in one sitting。 A solid mystery that gives readers exactly what they need for an introduction into this world of exiled fairy tales, while also laying just enough groundwork to pique interest in future stories。 I had a lot of fun with this one, and I'll definitely be checking out future volumes。 Read in one sitting。 A solid mystery that gives readers exactly what they need for an introduction into this world of exiled fairy tales, while also laying just enough groundwork to pique interest in future stories。 I had a lot of fun with this one, and I'll definitely be checking out future volumes。 。。。more

Not wanting to buy another long comic series is no excuse when you have a local friendly library like Rapid City’s! It might be a bit to early to say this is “the other Sandman”, but it starts strong, and it is miles ahead of Grimm’s Fairy Tales。

A fantastic start to one of my favorite series of all time。 It doesn't reach the same heights that the later volumes would hit, and the art isn't quite up to par yet, but it's a fun introduction to most main characters。 It's a quick self-contained murder mystery, but it begins to set the stage for what the series would eventually become。 A fantastic start to one of my favorite series of all time。 It doesn't reach the same heights that the later volumes would hit, and the art isn't quite up to par yet, but it's a fun introduction to most main characters。 It's a quick self-contained murder mystery, but it begins to set the stage for what the series would eventually become。 。。。more

I wasn't overly thrilled with this story。 It's along the lines of ABC's Once Upon a Time (I think these comics came about first) where famous fairy tale characters that we know and love are all entangled, trying to murder one another or hook-up。 This one fell into the realm of a detective mystery which I didn't much care for。 I couldn't relate to or empathize with any of the characters like I could in ABC's show which I think is a large part of why I didn't care for this first volume。 I will rea I wasn't overly thrilled with this story。 It's along the lines of ABC's Once Upon a Time (I think these comics came about first) where famous fairy tale characters that we know and love are all entangled, trying to murder one another or hook-up。 This one fell into the realm of a detective mystery which I didn't much care for。 I couldn't relate to or empathize with any of the characters like I could in ABC's show which I think is a large part of why I didn't care for this first volume。 I will read the second one before I completely give up on the series。 。。。more

This was awesome; I’m excited to read the next volumes。 A modern take on characters from fairy tales living in exile in NYC from their homeland because of the invading Adversary。 Snow White, the Big Bad Wolf (in human form), Jack (of Beanstalk fame), Bluebeard, and Rose Red are central characters in this one。 Murder mystery vibe。
