Summary

F。 C。 Yee’s The Rise of Kyoshi delves into the story of Kyoshi, the Earth Kingdom–born Avatar。 The longest-living Avatar in this beloved world’s history, Kyoshi established the brave and respected Kyoshi Warriors, but also founded the secretive Dai Li, which led to the corruption, decline, and fall of her own nation。 The first of two novels based on Kyoshi, The Rise of Kyoshi maps her journey from a girl of humble origins to the merciless pursuer of justice who is still feared and admired centuries after she became the Avatar。

I usually try to be formal with my book reviews, give a brief synopsis of the book and some base praise for the author's name。 This time, I think I want to get personal。 Avatar is a show that I remember watching when I was a kid。 I remember falling in love very quickly, but was unable to keep up linearly with the show。 We didn't have DVRs or Netflix back then。 I had to make do with watching what I could when I could。 Eventually, it just kind of fell into obscurity for me。 I moved on。 Until last I usually try to be formal with my book reviews, give a brief synopsis of the book and some base praise for the author's name。 This time, I think I want to get personal。 Avatar is a show that I remember watching when I was a kid。 I remember falling in love very quickly, but was unable to keep up linearly with the show。 We didn't have DVRs or Netflix back then。 I had to make do with watching what I could when I could。 Eventually, it just kind of fell into obscurity for me。 I moved on。 Until last year, when I found the Avatar TLA/TLOK boxset for a decent price online。 I decided why not。 Revisit my childhood。 I wasn't prepared for how invested I immediately became in this universe。 Which leads me here, to this book。 The episode where Kyoshi appears and explains what happened with Chin The Conquer was easily one of my favorites。 Earth is my favorite bending element as well, so I knew the Earth Avatar was going to be the most interesting to me。 Reading this book, getting the chance to learn more about this fascinating, grandstanding yet relatable character, has been such a joy。 A joy I can't wait to continue in the sequel! The legend of Avatar Kyoshi will easily go down as one of the best stories ever told, both in the Avatarverse and in ours。 F。C。 Lee was the right choice for this story。 Kudos, my fellow Avatar fan! I can't wait to read the next installment! 。。。more

I love this book!!! I like how it gives us the story of a past avatar and how she became the avatar。 And I absolutely love that it's a WomanxWoman。 I love this book!!! Loved it! Plot was up and down but had some pretty interesting twists, writing could've used some editing but the characters were really interesting and it was wonderful to get a new perspective into the avatar universe! I loved how it expanded the Avatar Universe and it gives insight into how one of the most fearsome Avatars ever。

did not finish - page 70。The writing felt very childish。Would have been better as a graphic novel。

I LOVED this。 As a large bodied person, I could definitely related to Kyoshi's size being mentioned so often and influencing so much of people's perception。My public library has this on the juvenile shelves so I was NOT prepared for all the mature themes and rather graphic violence in some places。 Is it worth it to mention to them? I haven't decided。 I LOVED this。 As a large bodied person, I could definitely related to Kyoshi's size being mentioned so often and influencing so much of people's perception。My public library has this on the juvenile shelves so I was NOT prepared for all the mature themes and rather graphic violence in some places。 Is it worth it to mention to them? 4。5 stars ✨ -This is sooo much darker compared to the animated series and i love it although I always get sad about the deaths on this one especially that one towards the end (if you know u knoww) -i love the references and connections between this story and the og series。 I still can’t wrap around my head that this story takes place 200 years before aangs 🤧 i also enjoyed the further world building Yee did on this book。 -the writing was impeccable!!

I loved this sooo much! What an amazing addition to the ATLA canon。 It's way darker and more brutal than any iteration we've seen so far on television or the comics, complete with torture, maiming, and even killing。 It's what you'd expect to see from powerful elemental bending。 Kyoshi's motivations are much different than Aang's, Korra's, or Wan's, and it was exciting to read about a completely different era in The Four Nations。 There are plenty of easter eggs and foreshadowing to the 100 years I loved this sooo much! He doesn't waste a single page or word。 He's able to expand the ATLA universe so brilliantly。 The character development is flawless。 The action sequences are vivid, while the dialogue is unforced and seamless。 So good! 。。。more

Great read! If you’re looking for the character complexity & exploration of grey morality that ATLA and LOK did so well, this will be a satisfying adventure for you。 At the same time, I’d say this is darker than Korra’s series, so come mentally prepped。 The universe continues to deepen with this book, and there are some great allusions to future events that an ATLA fan will recognize immediately。 I enjoyed it, so I hope you too!

I loved Kyoshi, Rangi and Kelsang (who was killed off way too early :/) and their relationships, but I didn't really care for any of the other characters (nor could I really tell them apart)。 Probably won't be reading the sequel。 I loved Kyoshi, Rangi and Kelsang (who was killed off way too early :/) and their relationships, but I didn't really care for any of the other characters (nor could I really tell them apart)。 Probably won't be reading the sequel。 。。。more

OMG THIS WAS SOOOO GOOD。 I barely have words to describe it。 Kyoshi has always been one of my favorite Avatars/characters in the Avatar world and learning more about her background and beginnings as an Avatar was amazing。 The plot of this book also portrays the world of Avatar in a different light than the shows and it was great to see different problems arise throughout the four nations, as well as another Avatar struggle with what it means to be the Avatar。 Like, honestly, if you like ATLA wha OMG THIS WAS SOOOO GOOD。 I barely have words to describe it。 Kyoshi has always been one of my favorite Avatars/characters in the Avatar world and learning more about her background and beginnings as an Avatar was amazing。 The plot of this book also portrays the world of Avatar in a different light than the shows and it was great to see different problems arise throughout the four nations, as well as another Avatar struggle with what it means to be the Avatar。 Like, honestly, if you like ATLA what are you waiting for in order to read this book?? 。。。more

4。5 starsthis was amazing。 just so amazing。 kyoshi is a bad bitch, and i feel like they fleshed her character out so well based on what was in ATLA。 but they also left room for her character to not yet be the kyoshi that aang sees in ATLA, but you can see the inklings of that kyoshi coming to light。 literally LOVED this。 i knocked half a star off because some things felt really convenient in this book。 like oh, pengpeng the sky bison just happens to like kyoshi enough even though kyoshi isn’t a 4。5 starsthis was amazing。 just so amazing。 kyoshi is a bad bitch, and i feel like they fleshed her character out so well based on what was in ATLA。 but they also left room for her character to not yet be the kyoshi that aang sees in ATLA, but you can see the inklings of that kyoshi coming to light。 literally LOVED this。 i knocked half a star off because some things felt really convenient in this book。 like oh, pengpeng the sky bison just happens to like kyoshi enough even though kyoshi isn’t a native air bender so kyoshi has a sky bison。 i mean, convenient, but also YIP YIP。 i also LOVED LOVED LOVED that kyoshi is more on the morally grey side。 aang is very much “violence is never the answer let’s talk it out and hug guys!” and kyoshi is definitely not that, and it was quite refreshing。 but i’m also just a sucker for morally grey characters。 her character was just so fascinating。 anyway, i loved this book。 。。。more

"Only justice will bring peace"Pretty much one of my favorite quotes from Kyoshi back from Avatar The Last Airbender and this story is basically how she came to learn and adopt this lesson。 I really liked this book。 "Only justice will bring peace"Pretty much one of my favorite quotes from Kyoshi back from Avatar The Last Airbender and this story is basically how she came to learn and adopt this lesson。 I really liked this book。 。。。more

Why did it take me SO LONG to read this。 It's so goooood。 One of the best and most interesting books I've read in a while。 Around every corner of the book there was something that threw me off whenever I thought I knew what was going on。 Why did it take me SO LONG to read this。 It's so goooood。 One of the best and most interesting books I've read in a while。 Around every corner of the book there was something that threw me off whenever I thought I knew what was going on。 。。。more

This would have been 4 stars if it weren’t for the brick wall where the third quarter of this book should have been。 First half was terrific, fourth quarter was amazing。 Third quarter。。。Overall I totally recommend especially to Avatar fans。

I was a massive fan of this book, and I loved getting to learn about one of my favorite Avatars。 I will admit, I didn’t enjoy all of the book and I found myself struggling to get through some parts of the book, however, the pros drastically outweigh the cons for this book and for that reason I gave it 5 stars。

Loved this book so much。 It gave a deeper understanding of the Avatar world and allowed for deeper character growth and analysis。 Highly recommend to any ATLA fan, Kyoshi is definitely my favorite Avatar out of all of them now。 If the creators decide to tell Kyoshi's story in animated form, I really hope they include and let F。C。 Yee write a lot of it。 I'm on my second time reading it and it's still so good。 Loved this book so much。 It gave a deeper understanding of the Avatar world and allowed for deeper character growth and analysis。 Highly recommend to any ATLA fan, Kyoshi is definitely my favorite Avatar out of all of them now。 If the creators decide to tell Kyoshi's story in animated form, I really hope they include and let F。C。 Yee write a lot of it。 I'm on my second time reading it and it's still so good。 。。。more

3。75This could have been perfect had the main pairing interacted on-screen more than,,, twice? Before and after coming together。 When will writers learn some things need to be shown rather then told?Still a captivating story tho, it's always good to be back in this world。 3。75This could have been perfect had the main pairing interacted on-screen more than,,, twice? The Rise of Kyoshi is an amazing novel。 The characters are lovable and realistic, the action is extremely vivid, and the overall plot is really fun to read about。 I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of its companion series, Avatar: The Last Airbender, as it is a fantastic expansion onto the world of the Avatar。 It was a fantastic book to read and I can’t wait to enjoy the sequel。

3。5 stars - ATLA is one of my favorite shows ever and reading the beginning of Kyoshi's journey as the Avatar was so fun。 I stumbled upon this book randomly and, while it wasn't perfect, I'm glad I gave it a shot! 3。5 stars。 The beginning was quite slow but the character development was beautiful, as well as how linked it is to the TV series。
