Summary

In Ship of Fools: How a Selfish Ruling Class is Bringing America to the Brink of Revolution, Tucker Carlson tells the truth about the new American elites, a group whose power and wealth has grown beyond imagination even as the rest of the country has withered。 The people who run America now barely interact with it。 They fly on their own planes, ski on their own mountains, watch sporting events far from the stands in sky boxes。 They have total contempt for you。

“They view America the way a private equity firm sizes up an aging conglomerate,” Carlson writes, “as something outdated they can profit from。 When it fails, they’re gone。

Left and right, Carlson says, are no longer meaningful categories in America。 “The rift is between those who benefit from the status quo, and those who don’t。”

Our leaders are fools, Carlson concludes, “unaware that they are captains of a sinking ship。” But in the signature and witty style that viewers of Tucker Carlson Tonight have come to enjoy, his book answers the all-important question: How do we put the country back on course?

It's funny, I feel the need to write this review just to explain myself。 I picked up this book at the recommendation of a right-leaning friend。 And, because I want to be more open-minded, I gave it a shot。 To my surprise (and maybe chagrin ;) ), Carlson makes quite a few good points。 There are some things I disagree with (as to be expected, as a liberal leaning person), but I liked how he called out and made arguments against the elites on both sides of the aisle (and maybe against some of us wh It's funny, I feel the need to write this review just to explain myself。 I picked up this book at the recommendation of a right-leaning friend。 And, because I want to be more open-minded, I gave it a shot。 To my surprise (and maybe chagrin ;) ), Carlson makes quite a few good points。 There are some things I disagree with (as to be expected, as a liberal leaning person), but I liked how he called out and made arguments against the elites on both sides of the aisle (and maybe against some of us who aren't necessarily in the elite class, but think along the same lines)。 I think his call to action at the end was a bit short and lack luster, but he powerfully called out the problems we are facing。 。。。more

Tucker Carlson speaks the truth, unfiltered, per usual。

So insightful! I just love listening to what he has to say!

I really enjoyed reading this book。 It is full of interesting information about those in the ruling class and their politics。 The writing itself is sharp and interesting, with a good amount of humor。 And I feel that Carl tried hard and succeeded in showing details and facts for the claims he makes and the opinions he shares。

Having seen an episode or two of Tucker's news? program, this book reads very much like several episodes strung together, providing debatable discussion points without providing any solutions。Evolution changes everything (neither to the good nor bad) until we define our position in the result。 The road to hell is paved with good intentions comes to mind quite often these days, and while reading this book。 The topics in this book are concisely described, historically bookended and left open for h Having seen an episode or two of Tucker's news? program, this book reads very much like several episodes strung together, providing debatable discussion points without providing any solutions。Evolution changes everything (neither to the good nor bad) until we define our position in the result。 The road to hell is paved with good intentions comes to mind quite often these days, and while reading this book。 The topics in this book are concisely described, historically bookended and left open for how the reader feels about each (since we already know where Tucker stands。) I have been party to many of these similar discussions with my co-workers。 Very rarely, if ever, does an immediate and equitable solution present itself。 Moreover, we are left with a sheen of disgust, feeling of defeatism, and eventual head shaking at the state of current affairs in our world。 So whatever you do, don't watch TV news programs, or read these book, if you prefer to keep your happiness intact。All of the topics in this book are salient in their delivery, yet impervious to your opinion about their existence。 Just go back to whatever you were doing beforehand, unless you are one of the unfortunate few named in the book (which I find highly unlikely you would be seeking reviews or sharing your thoughts here since you clearly don't care what the we think anyway。)As much as this book brings to bear, we are still left to face the realities of a failing democracy now with some knowledge of how it came to be。 Yet, it is much like pointing at the rising sun, and having impact on its trajectory。 We have learned how it travels, can comment to infinity about it (at our own peril for recourse), however, nothing we do can actually affect it。 So are we to consider ourselves enlightened and just move along our mortal coil keeping to ourselves? Thanks for reading 。。。more

I started watching clips from Tucker's show during 2020 which led me to picking up his book。 The book is a nice summation of his thoughts on today's political issues in more detail。 Overall it is a good book for fans of his。 Also I appreciate the Grateful Dead song title as the title of the book。 I started watching clips from Tucker's show during 2020 which led me to picking up his book。 The book is a nice summation of his thoughts on today's political issues in more detail。 Overall it is a good book for fans of his。 Also I appreciate the Grateful Dead song title as the title of the book。 。。。more

If you care about America's political future, this makes for a great read, though it certainly explores the same slate of topics covered by virtually every bestselling conservative pundit working today。 What sets it apart is that it attacks the Republican party almost as much as it does the Democrats。 Tucker Carlson basically comes across as the middle-ground between Ben Shapiro and Jimmy Dore。 It's a perspective I find interesting, given my current cynicism regarding all things politics。Like ot If you care about America's political future, this makes for a great read, though it certainly explores the same slate of topics covered by virtually every bestselling conservative pundit working today。 What sets it apart is that it attacks the Republican party almost as much as it does the Democrats。 Tucker Carlson basically comes across as the middle-ground between Ben Shapiro and Jimmy Dore。 It's a perspective I find interesting, given my current cynicism regarding all things politics。Like other conservative pundits, Carlson knows how write political science at the blue-collar level。 Also like many conservative pundits, he has very little use for footnoting, which is unfortunate。 The book is a grab bag of familiar topics, without much of a through line apart from the utter foolishness and dishonesty of America's ruling class。 I don't agree with him on absolutely everything (saving jobs by hindering technological progress, for example), but the whole thing comes across as well-reasoned, insightful, and intellectually honest。 That last element is in especially short supply these days。Just don't expect Carlson to offer a solid remedy for the issues plaguing our country。 If our only hope is that our leaders wise up and start putting the American people first, then God save us。 。。。more

this is a very informative book。 There is a lot of information that the mainstream media has left out in the past and continues to leave out to this day。 This is a very non biased book in which while the author is conservative he talks about the good and bad on both sides of the table

It's amazing that in 2。5 years since the publishing date that Tucker's opinions on the now former President, the shift in focus on the left from its former base and the role and control of social media giants are more important than ever。 A great read! Carlson does a great job of exposing the absurdities of the ruling class in America。 Understanding how far off course they've taken us gives incentive for wanting to get back "common sense people"--those who truly care about Americans and what is best for this country。 Carlson does a great job of exposing the absurdities of the ruling class in America。 Understanding how far off course they've taken us gives incentive for wanting to get back "common sense people"--those who truly care about Americans and what is best for this country。 。。。more

To get an overview I read these three。 Ship of Fools by Tucker Carlson, White Trash the 400 year untold History of Class in America by Nancy Isenberg, and the biography Grant by Ron Chernow。These three do fit together and complement each other。

As with all propaganda pieces the vacillation between shockingly reasonable statements and outrage was disorienting to the point I gave it one star above trash because the shockingly reasonable statements were actually shockingly reasonable。 This use of actual reason as a tool to drag the reader along down a rabbit hole filled with garbage is becoming a worn out schtick and I don't understand why people are still buying it。 As with all propaganda pieces the vacillation between shockingly reasonable statements and outrage was disorienting to the point I gave it one star above trash because the shockingly reasonable statements were actually shockingly reasonable。 This use of actual reason as a tool to drag the reader along down a rabbit hole filled with garbage is becoming a worn out schtick and I don't understand why people are still buying it。 。。。more

Read a lot like his show- just packed with info presented quickly。 Not an easy writing style for my preference, and not a lot for me to retain bc of how much he has in here。 But definitely a good read to see what a bunch of blithering idiots run our country (on both sides!) and a lot of reasonable explanations for how and why Trump was elected。

I thought Mr。 Carlson did a great job with the content and eliminated much of his own conservative leaning。 The topics are eye opening, especially the emasculation of men and the crisis it's caused。 As a woman with three grown son's, I ache to contribute to the solution。 I thought Mr。 Carlson did a great job with the content and eliminated much of his own conservative leaning。 The topics are eye opening, especially the emasculation of men and the crisis it's caused。 As a woman with three grown son's, I ache to contribute to the solution。 。。。more

What a great Christmas day book to read! Who needs Jimmy Stewart when you have Tucker Carlson? In all honesty, I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would。 Tucker gives a clear eyed view of where we are as Americans on topics like Environmentalism, Diversity, Economics, and how the dwindling middle class puts us in a precarious position as a country。 Couldn't recommend this book more highly。 What a great Christmas day book to read! I’ll admit that I’m a Tucker Carlson fan。 I like watching his show from time to time, and I think that, regardless of your take on his politics, it’s hard to argue against his skills and on-air presence。I was excited to pick this one up to hear a bit more from him than usual。 For the most part, that’s what we get here — a bunch of decently-reasoned political and social arguments。Most of those arguments are about what you'd expect to hear from Carlson — those on free speech, democracy, elections, I’ll admit that I’m a Tucker Carlson fan。 I like watching his show from time to time, and I think that, regardless of your take on his politics, it’s hard to argue against his skills and on-air presence。I was excited to pick this one up to hear a bit more from him than usual。 For the most part, that’s what we get here — a bunch of decently-reasoned political and social arguments。Most of those arguments are about what you'd expect to hear from Carlson — those on free speech, democracy, elections, and hypocrisy。 I found many of them to be both fun and on-brand for him。I enjoyed the book overall, but one complaint I did have was that I didn’t find the book fully cohesive。 It felt a bit more like a bunch of Carlson-eqsue segments chained together than it did a unifying work about a “ship of fools。”Now with that said, I did find the disjointed-at-times narrative compelling enough that I’m still giving it high marks。 You may see what I mean if you read this one, but you will likely also see (assuming you’re already a Carlson fan) that such a concern doesn’t totally matter anyway。-Brian SachettaAuthor of “Get Out of Your Head” 。。。more

Great book that all Americans should read regardless of political persuasion。 The author's points are well reasoned based on facts and published articles。 For example he points out the hypocrisy of Hillary Clinton taking a private jet to travel 20 miles or Al Gore's Nashville home using 23x the average amount of electricity while both display a religious fervor when citing the eminent danger of global warming。 This book should make the reader ask why and dig deeper into each topic。 I highly reco Great book that all Americans should read regardless of political persuasion。 The author's points are well reasoned based on facts and published articles。 For example he points out the hypocrisy of Hillary Clinton taking a private jet to travel 20 miles or Al Gore's Nashville home using 23x the average amount of electricity while both display a religious fervor when citing the eminent danger of global warming。 This book should make the reader ask why and dig deeper into each topic。 I highly recommend。 。。。more

Tucker Carlson represents the slow but constant switching of agendas between left and right that has been happening in the past years。 A conservative Fox News anchor, he spends a good part of the book on complaining nobody cares about deterring unbridled capitalism on the left anymore, among other things。A light, entertaining read on the hypocrisy of a certain elite whose life are not in the least affected by the PC agenda they spouse, living as they are in their predominantly white and affluent Tucker Carlson represents the slow but constant switching of agendas between left and right that has been happening in the past years。 A conservative Fox News anchor, he spends a good part of the book on complaining nobody cares about deterring unbridled capitalism on the left anymore, among other things。A light, entertaining read on the hypocrisy of a certain elite whose life are not in the least affected by the PC agenda they spouse, living as they are in their predominantly white and affluent neighborhoods, flying their fuel guzzling private planes and enrolling their kids in private schools, all the while virtue signalling for votes and internet points every chance they get。 。。。more

Tucker believes that the U。S。 has become an Oligarchy posing as a democracy。 This is evident from the many policies which the government has pursued that are at odds with the interests of most citizens。 The most recent telling event was the election of the outsider Trump and the subsequent efforts of the permanent class in Washington to sabotage his administration。Fifty years ago, the liberals were pro-labour and worked to avoid corporate excess。 Starting around the time of the tech boom this re Tucker believes that the U。S。 has become an Oligarchy posing as a democracy。 This is evident from the many policies which the government has pursued that are at odds with the interests of most citizens。 The most recent telling event was the election of the outsider Trump and the subsequent efforts of the permanent class in Washington to sabotage his administration。Fifty years ago, the liberals were pro-labour and worked to avoid corporate excess。 Starting around the time of the tech boom this reversed, with the corporate leaders becoming heroes of the state, with the liberals celebrating their wealth and assuring us their products would liberate the world。 Before long, left and right were taking virtually indistinguishable positions on many economic issues。 Some of the most successful players in the new economy have embraced the most retrograde labour practices, but there are no longer pro-labour Democrats to push back。Historically, American leaders including Jerry Brown, Joe Biden, George McGovern and Bill Clinton have recognized the need to limit immigration so as to protect American jobs。 By 2008, the Democratic Party endorsed unrestrained mass immigration。 Carlson attributes the reversal to political calculation。 Democrats understood that the overwhelming majority of immigrant voters would vote Democrat。 For years, the Sierra Club had articulated a zero-population-growth position。 However, once David Gelbaum started donating large amounts of money to them, they changed their position to support mass immigration。 By redefining immigration as a moral issue, elites have shut down debate over its costs。 More than anything else, the Vietnam War turned Liberals solidly against American military intervention。 Bill Clinton, a lifelong peacenik, realized that the voters disliked weak presidents。 He sent troops into Somalia, Haiti, Bosnia and Yugoslavia, later bombing the Sudan, Afghanistan and Iraq。 With both parties aligned on the wisdom of frequent military intervention abroad, no one was left to make the counter case。 As a result, America has remained in a state of almost permanent war。 If there’s a single lesson of the Iraq War, it’s that chaos is worse than dictatorship。 However, military action has been expanded in Libya and Afghanistan。 Obama directed over 4000 drone attacks in “non-battlefield” areas like Yemen, Somalia, and Pakistan。 A change in direction occurred when Trump expressed his doubts about the Iraq war and suggested that military spending should be reduced - the reaction from the establishment was one of shock, whether they be Democrats or Republicans。Freedom of speech has been a key element of the U。S。 Bill of Rights。 In 1964 students at Berkeley protected Jack Weinberg from arrest when he passed out unauthorized political literature。 In contrast, in 2017 when Milo Yiannopoulos came to speak, students protested to silence him, arguing that public safety takes precedence over freedom of speech。 American educational institutions have become intolerant of anything but left wing views。 A 2017 Cato Institute survey found that 52 percent of self-identified Democrats, of all ages, viewed government suppression of offensive speech as more important than the unfettered right to say whatever one wants。 In recent years, the tech companies have become intolerant of any but leftish views。 James Damore, who questioned such views, was fired by Google in spite of their position that "Part of building an open, inclusive environment means fostering a culture in which those with alternative views, including different political views, feel safe sharing their opinions。” For generations, journalists believed their job was to hold the powerful accountable, but now have become handmaidens to power, having more in common with government members than with the rest of the country。Traditionally, liberal attitudes have emphasized equality。 However, in recent years an emphasis on diversity。 Elites no longer oppose segregation - they consider race the center of human identity, demanding that individuals be exalted or punished because of their skin color。 Employment on the basis of their skills or ability or experience has given way to hiring for ethnicity。 Strangely, one ethnicity - Caucasian or white - has become to be associated with supremacy, racism, and all manner of evils。 Carlson relates a great story of the March for Science that was prompted by Trump's election to president, where march organizers decided to establish a connection between the hard sciences, which they were ostensibly defending, and broader issues of concern to activists。 In the end, interest group politics killed the event。American feminism is not a blue-collar phenomenon。 Almost all of its most prominent figures come from elite backgrounds。 Feminists have lent their support to extensive immigration but apparently do not recognize the misogynistic activities of Muslim immigrants。 Similarly, their belief in the interchangeability of men and women has led to the transgender concepts。 The lack of distinction in the sexes has been disadvantageous to women in sports and in facilities where the sexes are segregated for the protection of women, such as bathrooms and locker rooms。 Carlson believes that feminist ideas have promoted women over men to the extent that family life, marriage and child rearing have suffered。While environmentalism initially worked to protect the earth and fight degradation and pollution, with every passing year the goals of the environmental movement become steadily more abstract。 The EPA's goal was to combat environmental racism。 Obama EPA administrator Gina McCarthy explained that EPA regulations purportedly aimed at climate were really about “justice” for “communities of color。” Climate change has become a religion but it is notable that the elites such as Gore and DiCaprio and Hillary Clinton are the most vocal are all heavy users of energy, living in huge houses and flying private aircraft。 Carlson notes that if you can take a private jet to a global warming summit without guilt, you’re probably not going to be troubled by a few inaccurate predictions。 Most civilizations have head a relatively small number of people make the overwhelming majority of significant cultural and economic decisions。 Democracy is different, however。 Carlson feels that as conditions for the people deteriorate they will support increasingly radical leaders, who over time will destroy the ruling class。 "Left untended, democracies self-destruct。" The solution is to attend to the population。 。。。more
