This just confirms for me that House Beautiful style is not my style: too overdone and somehow it feels artificial。

Cluttered rooms with enormous chandeliers and bold matchy-match color schemes。 The message is "I decorated my house! I decorated my house!"。 Cluttered rooms with enormous chandeliers and bold matchy-match color schemes。 The message is "I decorated my house! I decorated my house!"。 。。。more

Beautiful pictures。 Some inspiring ideas: splash of color, focal point, something that speaks to me, etc。 But to live in one of those picture rooms? No way。 Too splashy。 Too over done。 And so not wallet friendly。

This book was alright。

These spaces all seemed over-the-top and none looked like a person would really live there。 And apparently What Every Room Needs is a CRAP TON OF MONEY thrown at it。

3。5 starsBeautiful, but ultimately not necessarily helpful in terms of actually assisting one is achieving this look。 They showcase the idea in question and - wow! What lovely homes - but add little advice to someone learning decorating or wanting to emulate the style。

Let's start with my positive comments first。。。1) I must say that I found at least ONE thing to like from every photo!2)。。。there is NO 2。。。 grrrrI saw things in this book that I can NEVER unsee and I am truly sorry for that。 :(When all is said and done, I am thankful for the little things that caught my eye among some of the most unusual decor photos that I have ever laid my eyes upon! This book presents style mainstays with broad topics that can be implemented in many individual ways。 It includes lots of stunning pictures that give lots of inspiration, both inside the highlighted theme and out。

I’m sorry but the rooms were just plain ugly。 Overdone, gaudy, and just。。。。I don’t know。 They’re little things in each room that I enjoyed。 An ottoman here。 A pillow there。 A plate somewhere。 But more than half those rooms (at least judging by the pictures) need about half of the ‘stuff’ removed。 Several rooms are so monochromatic that I would kill to get in there and a pop of orange, pink, purple, or blue。 Just my humble eclectic opinion。

oh so pretty。。。。。

I normally like HouseBeautiful's style however the Interiors in this book were way overdone to the point of being gaugy。 there wasn't one idea I took away from this book that I wanted to save to potentially use in real life。 I normally like HouseBeautiful's style however the Interiors in this book were way overdone to the point of being gaugy。 there wasn't one idea I took away from this book that I wanted to save to potentially use in real life。 。。。more

all very expensive homes; most ideas are adaptable

Donna

Some of the “style secrets” may be reimagined to fit the average household but most of the examples in this book are far above middle class pocketbooks。

I loved 90% of these rooms。 Are they realistic for everyday use? Nope。 Beautiful though

Mary Lynn

For fans of the magazine。 Gorgeous photos。

This book did little for me。 The rooms looked "too done。" Lots of lacquered walls, wallpaper, odd color choices for leather chairs (peacock blue, chartreuse), and while I agree with some of the principles, I only saw two photographs of rooms I would consider。 So according to the author, here is what every home (and room) needs: A splash of unexpected color; A nod to the past, A Grand Gesture, Glitter and Gleam, To Embrace the Great Outdoors, Something that says "touch me。" Something that only sp This book did little for me。 The rooms looked "too done。" Lots of lacquered walls, wallpaper, odd color choices for leather chairs (peacock blue, chartreuse), and while I agree with some of the principles, I only saw two photographs of rooms I would consider。 So according to the author, here is what every home (and room) needs: A splash of unexpected color; A nod to the past, A Grand Gesture, Glitter and Gleam, To Embrace the Great Outdoors, Something that says "touch me。" Something that only speaks to you, A Wow Moment。 A grand gesture was a five foot plaster bust of Juno in a tiny French dining room。 I'd say that's rather grand。。。and would give you nightmares。 The Italian film director Frederico Fellini was infamous for using things out of scale to create grotesque scenes。 A wow moment? A tiny space for a child's playroom that was entirely emerald green lacquer, or as they put it "a room to grow into。" That very expensive paint treatment and two minutes with a four-year old and a box of crayons would undo the wow very quickly。 I don't need antler furniture to remind me of the great outdoors, I don't need faux fur chairs to give me tactile experience and the first time Great Aunt Julia's DEPENDS leak into that, you've got another problem。 A wow factor。 Take the principles they suggest and don't go apeshit over them。 A lighter touch is needed。 You want glitter and gleam? Buy a sequined pillow or a brass vase。 Don't cover the wall in delicate gold leaf。 A splash of unexpected color。 Remember--splash。 They had entire rooms in blinding tangerine。 This book will age dreadfully over time。 For me? Reading it was an exercise in what not to do。 。。。more

Nothing appealed to me in this style book。
