Summary

Dr。 Kai-Fu Lee—one of the world’s most respected experts on AI and China—reveals that China has suddenly caught up to the US at an astonishingly rapid and unexpected pace。   In AI Superpowers, Kai-fu Lee argues powerfully that because of these unprecedented developments in AI, dramatic changes will be happening much sooner than many of us expected。 Indeed, as the US-Sino AI competition begins to heat up, Lee urges the US and China to both accept and to embrace the great responsibilities that come with significant technological power。 Most experts already say that AI will have a devastating impact on blue-collar jobs。 But Lee predicts that Chinese and American AI will have a strong impact on white-collar jobs as well。 Is universal basic income the solution? In Lee’s opinion, probably not。  But he provides  a clear description of which jobs will be affected and how soon, which jobs can be enhanced with AI, and most importantly, how we can provide solutions to some of the most profound changes in human history that are coming soon。

What is it like to be human in the age of Machines?

It is men’s final step to understand themselves, and I hope to take part in this new, but promising science。” “So how does deep learning do this? Fundamentally, these algorithms use massive amounts of data from a specific domain to make a decision that optimizes for a desired outcome。 It does this by training itself to recognize deeply buried patterns and correlations connecting the many data points to the desired outcome。 This pattern-finding process is easier when the data is labeled with that desired outcome -- “cat” versus “no cat”; “clicked” versus “didn't click”; “won game” versus “lost game。” It can then draw on its extensive knowledge of these correlations -- many of which are invisible or irrelevant to human observers -- to make better decisions than a human could。”“People are so excited about deep learning precisely because its core power -- its ability to recognize a pattern, optimize for a specific outcome, make a decision -- can be applied to so many different kinds of everyday problems。“En el aprendizaje profundo (deep learning), no hay datos como más datos。 Cuantos más ejemplos de un fenómeno dado esté expuesta a una red, con mayor precisión podrá seleccionar patrones e identificar cosas en el mundo real "。“La invención del aprendizaje profundo (deep learning) significa que estamos pasando de la era de la experiencia a la era de los datos。 El entrenamiento exitoso de algoritmos de aprendizaje profundo requiere poder de cómputo, talento técnico y una gran cantidad de datos。 Pero de esos tres, el volumen de datos será el más importante en el futuro。 Eso es porque una vez que el talento técnico alcanza un cierto umbral, comienza a mostrar rendimientos decrecientes。 Más allá de ese punto, los datos marcan la diferencia。 Los algoritmos ajustados por un ingeniero medio pueden superar a los creados por los principales expertos del mundo si el ingeniero medio tiene acceso a muchos más datos "。"Los algoritmos ajustados por un ingeniero medio pueden superar a los creados por los principales expertos del mundo si el ingeniero medio tiene acceso a muchos más datos"。“El efectivo ha desaparecido tan rápidamente de las ciudades chinas que incluso“ interrumpió ”el crimen。 En marzo de 2017, un par de primos chinos fueron noticia con una desafortunada serie de robos。 La pareja había viajado a Hangzhou, una ciudad rica y hogar de Alibaba, con el objetivo de hacer un par de lucrativos puntajes y luego saltarse la ciudad。 Armados con dos cuchillos, los primos robaron tres tiendas de conveniencia consecutivas solo para descubrir que los propietarios casi no tenían efectivo para entregar; prácticamente todos sus clientes ahora pagaban directamente con sus teléfonos。 Su ola de crímenes les valió alrededor de $ 125 cada uno, ni siquiera lo suficiente para cubrir sus viajes hacia y desde Hangzhou, cuando la policía los detuvo。 Los medios locales informaron rumores de que, al ser arrestado, uno de los hermanos gritó: "¿Cómo es que no queda dinero en efectivo en Hangzhou?"。“La robótica, sin embargo, es mucho más difícil。 Requiere una delicada interacción de ingeniería mecánica, percepción de inteligencia artificial y manipulación de la motricidad fina。 Todos estos son problemas que se pueden resolver, pero no a la velocidad a la que se está construyendo software puro para manejar tareas cognitivas de cuello blanco。 Una vez que el robot está construido, también debe probarse, venderse, enviarse, instalarse y mantenerse en el lugar。 Los ajustes a los algoritmos subyacentes del robot a veces se pueden realizar de forma remota, pero cualquier problema mecánico requiere un trabajo práctico con la máquina。 Todas estas fricciones ralentizarán el ritmo de la automatización robótica "。“In a futuristic Beijing, the city is divided into three economic castes that split time on the city’s surface。 five million residents of the elite first space enjoy a twenty-four-hour cycle beginning at 6 a。m。, a full day and night in a clean, hypermodern, uncluttered, city。 When First Space folds up and flips over, the 20 million residents of Second Space get sixteen hours to work across a somewhat less glamorous cityscape。 Finally, the denizens of Third Space - 50 million sanitation workers, food vendors, and menial laborers - emerge for an eight-hour shnift from 10 p。m。 to 6 a。m。, toiling in the dark among the skyscrapers and trash pits。 The trash-sorting jobs that are a pillar of the Third Space could be entirely automated but are instead done manually to provide employment for the unfortunate denizens condemned to life there。 Travel between the different spaces is forbidden, creating a society in which the privileged residents of First Space can live free of worry that the unwashed masses will contamine their techno-utopia。”“En un Beijing futurista, la ciudad está dividida en tres castas económicas que dividen el tiempo en la superficie de la ciudad。 Cinco millones de residentes del primer espacio de élite disfrutan de un ciclo de veinticuatro horas que comienza a las 6 a。m。, un día y una noche completos en una ciudad limpia, hipermoderna y despejada。 Cuando First Space se pliega y se da la vuelta, los 20 millones de residentes de Second Space tienen dieciséis horas para trabajar en un paisaje urbano algo menos glamuroso。 Finalmente, los habitantes de Third Space (50 millones de trabajadores de saneamiento, vendedores de alimentos y trabajadores serviles) emergen para un turno de ocho horas a partir de las 10 p。m。 a las 6 a。m。, trabajando en la oscuridad entre los rascacielos y los pozos de basura。Los trabajos de clasificación de basura que son un pilar del Tercer Espacio podrían estar completamente automatizados, pero en cambio se realizan manualmente para proporcionar empleo a los desafortunados habitantes condenados a vivir allí。 Está prohibido viajar entre los diferentes espacios, creando una sociedad en la que los privilegiados residentes de First Space pueden vivir libres de preocupaciones de que las masas sucias contaminen su tecno-utopía ”。"El pionero del aprendizaje profundo Andrew Ng ha comparado la inteligencia artificial con el aprovechamiento de la electricidad de Thomas Edison: una tecnología revolucionaria en sí misma, y una que una vez aprovechada se puede aplicar para revolucionar docenas de industrias diferentes"。“Hacer realidad la nueva promesa de la electrificación hace un siglo requirió cuatro insumos clave: combustibles fósiles para generarla, empresarios para construir nuevos negocios a su alrededor, ingenieros eléctricos para manipularla y un gobierno de apoyo para desarrollar la infraestructura pública subyacente。 Aprovechar el poder de la IA en la actualidad, la "electricidad" del siglo XXI, requiere cuatro entradas análogas: datos abundantes, emprendedores hambrientos, científicos de IA y un entorno político favorable a la IA "。 。。。more

The books describes the psyche of the American and Chinese towards AI and the coming digital revolution。 It also delves into the author’s life and how a life-changing circumstance changes his outlook towards life。 Gained insight into the different economies and what should we prioritize in life after all。

Could have been shorter (way shorter!) and avoid excessive self-promotion and name-dropping。 Gives a basic perspective on the Chinese market (albeit not so much focused on AI)。 Too much generalisation and common knowledge packaged in a book format。

A discussion of AI from China and the US perspective。 These are the two "AI Superpowerers。" The development of the tech industry in China is fascinating and quite different than how it developed in the US and other parts of the world。 China's command economy influences the development in different ways。 AI actually benefits from monopolies since the current AI models rely on big data。 A discussion of AI from China and the US perspective。 These are the two "AI Superpowerers。" The development of the tech industry in China is fascinating and quite different than how it developed in the US and other parts of the world。 China's command economy influences the development in different ways。 AI actually benefits from monopolies since the current AI models rely on big data。 。。。more

The author has ample experience in the field of AI, together with his cultural background (Taiwanese) that enables him to flourish not just in the US, but also in China as a business executive and as a VC。 Having these distinct advantages enables him to see the development and progression of AI in both US and China。 Overall a short yet informative book for those looking to understand the world of AI and work culture in China。

Why do these industrial robots have to be privately owned? And how about we demand our economy to be fully automated, liberate people from the necessity of working, live off of the material wealth-produced and truly dedicate ourselves to the work we want to do? It was, after all, Stephen Hawking who said that he was more afraid of capitalism - the owners of the robots - than the robots themselves。 。。。more
