Summary

Forced into retirement, Evan Smoak gets an urgent request for help from someone he didn't even suspect existed。

As a boy, Evan Smoak was pulled out of a foster home and trained in an off-the-books operation known as the Orphan Program。 He was a government assassin, perhaps the best, known to a few insiders as Orphan X。 He eventually broke with the Program and adopted a new name – The Nowhere Man―and a new mission, helping the most desperate in their times of trouble。 But the highest power in the country has made him a tempting offer - in exchange for an unofficial pardon, he must stop his clandestine activities as The Nowhere Man。 Now Evan has to do the one thing he’s least equipped to do—live a normal life。

But then he gets a call for help from the one person he never expected。 A woman claiming to have given him up for adoption, a woman he never knew—his mother。 Her unlikely request: help Andrew Duran—a man whose life has gone off the rails, who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, bringing him to the deadly attention of very powerful figures。 Now a brutal brother & sister assassination team are after him and with no one to turn to, and no safe place to hide, Evan is Duran’s only option。 But when the hidden cabal catches on to what Evan is doing, everything he’s fought for is on the line—including his own life。

I love the series, but the ending on this one。。。。well, what can I say?

Evan Smoak is retired 。。。 or so we think。A strange phone number keeps calling him on his RoamZone without leaving messages。 So finally Evan calls the number which is immediately answered which leads to Evan helping another lost cause。。which brings his childhood past back to the forefront。Many twists and turns while Evan helps his "friend" Andre。Can't wait for the next installment! Another great book in the series。 The ending was a nail-biter and of course now has me anxious for the next book!

3。5I’ve eagerly awaited this Orphan X entry as Evan takes on his smallest foes yet。 I was struck this time by how much refinement and tech Evan has and uses, which isn’t a new development, but is unique and cool nonetheless。 I found Evan’s emotional introspection tedious and boring for the most part。 The familial revelations and his attempted connections to Joey, Mia, Peter, Lorilee, etc were awkward at best: “is this how humans feel?” I get that part of the premise is that he was trained to ret 3。5I’ve eagerly awaited this Orphan X entry as Evan takes on his smallest foes yet。 I was struck this time by how much refinement and tech Evan has and uses, which isn’t a new development, but is unique and cool nonetheless。 I found Evan’s emotional introspection tedious and boring for the most part。 The familial revelations and his attempted connections to Joey, Mia, Peter, Lorilee, etc were awkward at best: “is this how humans feel?” I get that part of the premise is that he was trained to retain some compassion but talking about how “love” is a four-letter word and weirdly stroking Joey’s hair didn’t quite connect with me。 。。。more

Another great Orphan X book! Even though Evan Smoak has retired as the Nowhere Man, he is drawn into a case by a woman who turns out to be his biological mother。 She wants him to help Andrew Duran who is being threatened by an assassination team。 Wonderfully written, as always, by Gregg Hurwitz, but with an abrupt ending I still don't know what to make of。 Another great Orphan X book! I loved this book。 I’ve been listening to this series back to back。 This one was really good bc I liked the technical aspects w/ the drones。 Evan is great at out maneuvering people but drones are a different story。 The ending left me anticipating the next book! He deserves an Audie Award! Seriously he does!!! I can see why so many people love him! I highly recommend this series。 Start at the beginning though 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 That ending shook me to my core, there better be an announcement for the next book soon。。。And what was it with this book and destroying me emotionally with all the sensitive talks between Evan and Joey/Peter (aka his kids), Veronica and Andre。 Seriously, I did not expect this book to make me tear up like that?Until the (hopefully) next book, I’ll just have to settle for rereading this series I guess。。。

Still love X, but this was not my favorite。Anxiously awaiting (hoping for) #7。And, I'd definitely read books with Joey and/or Candy as the main character。 Those ladies are fierce。 Still love X, but this was not my favorite。Anxiously awaiting (hoping for) #7。And, I'd definitely read books with Joey and/or Candy as the main character。 Those ladies are fierce。 。。。more

It's amazing to me that a sixth book in a series could be so good! I absolutely love the plot of this particular Orphan X novel, and I think it's the best one so far。 Hurwitz gives us all the intense situations we would expect Evan to get himself into, along with the high-tech weaponry that makes these novels so fun。 What I really enjoyed about this particular X novel was how we get to see a more human side of Evan。 I knew he had some emotions in there somewhere! OMGosh!!!!!!!!!The weapon used by the enemy is the scariest yet。 Loved Mom, what an intriguing character。 So much I want to say on these topics and yet to say anything more is to give away one of the most emotional Orphan X novels to date。 Only the loss of Jack comes close to this one。 Just read it!

I hadn't read a Gregg Hurwitz book before this one and I didn't realize this was part of a series when I first requested the ARC but I didn't need to read the others to be able to follow this one。 I'm sure the background history from the other books would have made it better but it wasn't necessary。 It starts out with some background history of the main character, Evan, which is what helped catch me up with the series。 And then we're off! The action starts and I'm on the ride。 I enjoyed this boo I hadn't read a Gregg Hurwitz book before this one and I didn't realize this was part of a series when I first requested the ARC but I didn't need to read the others to be able to follow this one。 I'm sure the background history from the other books would have made it better but it wasn't necessary。 It starts out with some background history of the main character, Evan, which is what helped catch me up with the series。 And then we're off! The popular Orphan X series has gathered a huge following of devoted fans, and for a good reason。 In his latest offering, author Gregg Hurwitz gives us the story of Evan Smoak who has gone from being Orphan X to becoming the “crusader” known as The Nowhere Man。 And now, he wants to have a normal life and have the kinds of experiences that others have。 But his path is about to become more difficult, when a woman who claims to be his mother asks him to help someone who can’t help himself out of a The popular Orphan X series has gathered a huge following of devoted fans, and for a good reason。 In his latest offering, author Gregg Hurwitz gives us the story of Evan Smoak who has gone from being Orphan X to becoming the “crusader” known as The Nowhere Man。 And now, he wants to have a normal life and have the kinds of experiences that others have。 But his path is about to become more difficult, when a woman who claims to be his mother asks him to help someone who can’t help himself out of a precarious situation。 But now, not only is everything Evan has worked to achieve in his life on the line, so is he。 Once again, Hurwitz has brought us a tantalizing, tense and intriguing tale of this unlikely hero – assassin gone rogue。I met this book at Auntie's Bookstore in Spokane, WA 。。。more

Good fun but not his bestI like the Orphan X series a lot, not the best out there but they grab your attention and move along at a decent pace。 This one was not quite as good as the others, but worth a read nonetheless。

Wow what a ride。 Love the Orphan novels。 I love all of Hurwitz’s side characters。 Some are side kicks who you root for and want to see more of。 Some of his side characters are less than acceptable in normal society and some are the pillars。 Some are kids being kids and he writes about this so well。All said, it’s the story that drives a book and this book is a whopper。

Bill Rixham

As a fan of the Orphan X series I anxiously awaited this book。 I thought is was good but it did not live up to my expectations。 The villains were not well written and the story line was weak。 Of course after the previous book, which I felt was a five star effort, I may have expected too much from this one。 It is worth the read。

Orphan X。 Prodigal SonInteresting plot。 Follows the Orphan storyline。 Could see where the story was headed early on, but Hurwitz keeps the reader guessing。 Recommended for the Orphan fan。 Overall, a good read & some fun tech talk。

Adrenaline page turner I love the whole Orphan X concept。 Escapism at its best。 Every book is a page turner leaving one thinking “How can Hurwitz possibly improve on this?” And then he does! I could not put Prodigal Son down。 I really hope we see the whole series on the silver screen one day。 I like that Evan Smoak (X) has a sense of humor (almost like Lee Child’s Jack Reacher) , and not constantly ducking and diving capture by his own secret service (like Ludlum’s Jason Bourne)。

David Dalton

Another great Orphan X thriller。 Some family secrets are finally revealed。 Loved it all except for the ending。 Kind of bummed out on that。

This is the latest book in the Orphan X series by Gregg Hurwitz of which I have not previously read。 It is a quick read with fast paced action throughout。 I have read others by this author that I liked much more, this was not one of my favorites。

Worth a readEasy to read。 Plenty of action punctuated with emotional stuff which was less enjoyable but required for the story I guess。
