Summary

Some things about babies, happily, will never change。 They still arrive warm, cuddly, soft, and smelling impossibly sweet。 But how moms and dads care for their brand-new bundles of baby joy has changed and now, so has the new-baby bible。 Announcing the completely revised third edition of What to Expect the First Year。 With over 10。5 million copies in print, First Year is the world s best-selling, best-loved guide to the instructions that babies don t come with, but should。 And now, it s better than ever。 Every parent s must-have/go-to is completely updated。 Keeping the trademark month-by-month format that allows parents to take the potentially overwhelming first year one step at a time, First Year is easier-to-read, faster-to-flip-through, and new-family-friendlier than ever packed with even more practical tips, realistic advice, and relatable, accessible information than before。 Illustrations are new, too。 Among the changes: Baby care fundamentals crib and sleep safety, feeding, vitamin supplements are revised to reflect the most recent guidelines。 Breastfeeding gets more coverage, too, from getting started to keeping it going。 Hot-button topics and trends are tackled: attachment parenting, sleep training, early potty learning (elimination communication), baby-led weaning, and green parenting (from cloth diapers to non-toxic furniture)。 An all-new chapter on buying for baby helps parents navigate through today s dizzying gamut of baby products, nursery items, and gear。 Also new: tips on preparing homemade baby food, the latest recommendations on starting solids, research on the impact of screen time (TVs, tablets, apps, computers), and For Parents boxes that focus on mom s and dad s needs。 Throughout, topics are organized more intuitively than ever, for the best user experience possible。"

I found it with a lot of obsolete information and practices。 I Missed the exiatence of an index, so very difficult to navigaye between discussed matters and to refer afterwards。

Worthy manual for the rapid change in baby。 Read this tome straight through and it will live on as a reference source throughout the next several months。 There are a lot of bad parenting books out there but this is a good one。

Very detailed book, almost a “bible” if birth。 From before the birthday to all along the 12 months after birth, this book explains in details what is going on and fives valuable information and tips。 Many things will be explained by the hospital, but better read more than dnt know about it。

Skimmed this one in the sections where I needed a quick refresher。 It is immense and full of info best suited for first-time parents。 Not something I found helpful this time。

From new mom to mom of an almost 1 year old, this book has been my go to for any and everything! I highly recommend it, whether you’re around babies often or brand new to the parenting world。 It offers so much insight, wisdom, and guidance。

Although some of the information in this book is outdated, it provided generally helpful and accessible reference information for preparing and adjusting to a baby's developmental growth over the first year。 4/5 Although some of the information in this book is outdated, it provided generally helpful and accessible reference information for preparing and adjusting to a baby's developmental growth over the first year。 4/5 。。。more

The "What to Expect" series is simply awesome。 Got this one when my daughter was born。 It has month-wise details of a baby's growth, development, activities and nuances。 It also has separate chapters on getting ready for the baby, how to deal with ailments and injuries, concerns of adoptive parents, vaccinations and travelling with the baby。 It is very comprehensive and detailed。 It practically addresses any concern one might have as a new parent。 A brilliant parenting manual and a must have for The "What to Expect" series is simply awesome。 Got this one when my daughter was born。 It has month-wise details of a baby's growth, development, activities and nuances。 It also has separate chapters on getting ready for the baby, how to deal with ailments and injuries, concerns of adoptive parents, vaccinations and travelling with the baby。 It is very comprehensive and detailed。 It practically addresses any concern one might have as a new parent。 A brilliant parenting manual and a must have for all new parents。 。。。more

Pros: excellent source of concentrated information, arranged month by month。 Probably the most useful of the books I've read so far。Cons: I hated reading it every month。 Boring, boring, boring, preachy。 And there's an added zinger to families during the pandemic。 There are so many "this is the time to ask for help! it takes a village! parents can't do this alone!" sections that I wanted to scream。 NO ONE CAN HELP。 The best they can do is bring dinner and/or Grubhub cards, because it's not safe t Pros: excellent source of concentrated information, arranged month by month。 Probably the most useful of the books I've read so far。Cons: I hated reading it every month。 Boring, boring, boring, preachy。 And there's an added zinger to families during the pandemic。 There are so many "this is the time to ask for help! it takes a village! parents can't do this alone!" sections that I wanted to scream。 NO ONE CAN HELP。 The best they can do is bring dinner and/or Grubhub cards, because it's not safe to help。And then add in the repeated admonitions to "take baby out and about! he needs to be meeting new people, getting exposed to new germs, being mentally stimulated with new experiences for his brain to grow!" It's winter in a pandemic, the baby hates the cold, we have nowhere to go and he can't wear a mask。 Great to have the continual reminder of the permanent damage this is probably doing to our kid's development! How wonderful to know that babies of his age should be able to wave bye-bye when our kid has not had an opportunity to say goodbye to anyone in months。 ARGH。 Hated every minute of it。 Yes, I know I'm projecting all my anger at the pandemic onto this book。 But ARGH。。。。And I nevertheless ordered the sequel for the second year。 Because pandemic, and I'm not able to do the usual mom's group thing where I'd assess my kid's progress relative to others。 So, books。 And lots of crying, because no one is designed to be a fulltime parent every single hour of every single day for an entire year。 。。。more

A good reference book to have when questions arise。 I think it's particularly most helpful in the first few months of having your first child。 I think as your baby grows so does your confidence in parenting, and you start trusting your gut more often than not。 It's not a book that you would read cover to cover necessarily。 A good reference book to have when questions arise。 I think it's particularly most helpful in the first few months of having your first child。 I think as your baby grows so does your confidence in parenting, and you start trusting your gut more often than not。 It's not a book that you would read cover to cover necessarily。 。。。more

Lots of great information。 The “your baby should be” gave me some anxiety and I had to remind myself not to compare。 But it was very helpful as a first time mom with lots of questions

Very informative

It seems silly to give something with such a vast wealth of knowledge anything less than 5 stars。 But, since everything is kid dependent, and the range of what is "right" and "normal" is so wide, this becomes a nice reference point more than anything else。 It seems silly to give something with such a vast wealth of knowledge anything less than 5 stars。 But, since everything is kid dependent, and the range of what is "right" and "normal" is so wide, this becomes a nice reference point more than anything else。 。。。more

What a great source of information。 I got more information out of this book than I did from my son's pediatrician。 What developmental milestones should he be achieving? What behaviors should I be looking for and how do I respond to them? What should he be eating month by month? What toys does he need? Etc。 Etc。 And I love the section in the back of the book that deals with all things baby injury or sickness how to treat it and when to call the doctor。 I love these books and I will be getting the What a great source of information。 I got more information out of this book than I did from my son's pediatrician。 What developmental milestones should he be achieving? Just difficult to find topics because it’s scattered all over the months on when to 。 But otherwise helpful for a first time mom like me

Totally forgot that I was given this book a few months ago and picked it up last night。 There is a lot of good information, answers to common questions and I really liked the milestone section by month where it says most babies will be doing this, some will be doing this, few will be doing this, as milestones are not concrete and will vary baby to baby。 I definitely liked it better than the original What To Expect book, there seems to be less cutesy language and it's more straightford。 I will de Totally forgot that I was given this book a few months ago and picked it up last night。 There is a lot of good information, answers to common questions and I really liked the milestone section by month where it says most babies will be doing this, some will be doing this, few will be doing this, as milestones are not concrete and will vary baby to baby。 I definitely liked it better than the original What To Expect book, there seems to be less cutesy language and it's more straightford。 I will definitely be referencing it for health information as she gets older。 。。。more

I am a first time mom who gave birth in September and since I knew nothing about babies, I knew I needed to read up and prepare。 The book has a lot of great information but it's hard to know the value of what's included until I live it。 I was a bit turned off by some of the word choices ( a little too cutesy for me) but not enough to miss the insight I could gain。 My biggest gripe with the book is when you get into the chapters each month, they give a page of basics and then focus on key topics I am a first time mom who gave birth in September and since I knew nothing about babies, I knew I needed to read up and prepare。 The book has a lot of great information but it's hard to know the value of what's included until I live it。 I was a bit turned off by some of the word choices ( a little too cutesy for me) but not enough to miss the insight I could gain。 My biggest gripe with the book is when you get into the chapters each month, they give a page of basics and then focus on key topics they think you would go through at that age。 I wish this was expanded on the basics。 As a total newbie I wanted more knowledge of the day to day life with a baby。 There's focus about returning to work at 3 months (not applicable to Canadian moms and when it will be, it won't be the same struggle) or weaning off breast at 12 months (ended up formula feeding) that made it a drag to read cover to cover。 I think this book works better as a more informed Google rather than something to pick up and read fully (and then forget when you get to the month things apply to)。 Overall it's a good resource to have, but I feel I need more literature as I work on raising my little dude: 4 stars。 。。。more

This book was such a helpful companion during the baby year。 As a new parent, you're full of questions, and the book did a great job at answering a majority of them in a science-backed no-nonsense way。 The way it's divided into monthly chapters makes it a very approachable read, and I took the full year to read through it month by month。 This book was such a helpful companion during the baby year。 As a new parent, you're full of questions, and the book did a great job at answering a majority of them in a science-backed no-nonsense way。 The way it's divided into monthly chapters makes it a very approachable read, and I took the full year to read through it month by month。 。。。more

I was glued to this book for the first six months。 Perhaps less helpful the latter half of the first year, but I really appreciated the monthly snapshots!

Becca

As a first time mom, this book was really helpful to read month by month。 I read each month a few weeks ahead of time and it really helped prepare me for what was coming and helped reassure me that everything was normal。 It also helped answer many of the questions I had throughout the year。 This is a great reference book for new moms。

This book is full of interesting info for each month of baby's first year。 There were several things that would not be considered "out of date" but I think if you have questions or what to know what to expect each month in regard to milestones this is a good place to start。 This book is full of interesting info for each month of baby's first year。 There were several things that would not be considered "out of date" but I think if you have questions or what to know what to expect each month in regard to milestones this is a good place to start。 。。。more

Pretty good。 Definitely good details about baby’s growth stages and details on how to help them transition and grow well。 A very comprehensive section on first aid too。 There were a few things that seemed a little out of date, but overall good!

I didn't read this in one go as that would have been too overwhelming and probably useless (I would never be able to remember everything)。 I read this every month to check on milestones, common problems, etc。 Many of the questions I had were answered in this book。 Pretty comprehensive and wonderful to have on hand。 It seriously feels like talking to a friend。 haha Just remember that every child is unique, so it is always best to consult with your pediatrician for medical concerns。 My baby is now I didn't read this in one go as that would have been too overwhelming and probably useless (I would never be able to remember everything)。 I read this every month to check on milestones, common problems, etc。 Many of the questions I had were answered in this book。 Pretty comprehensive and wonderful to have on hand。 It seriously feels like talking to a friend。 haha Just remember that every child is unique, so it is always best to consult with your pediatrician for medical concerns。 My baby is now turning 1, so I am officially graduating from this book。 :) 。。。more

Consulted this book often this year and found it very helpful- I especially liked tips on weaning, baby proofing, and introducing solids。 Now that Hannah is almost 1 I have moved on to What to Expect the Second Year。
