Summary

Kahlil Gibran’s masterpiece, The Prophet, is one of the most beloved classics of our time。 Published in 1923, it has been translated into more than twenty languages, and the American editions alone have sold more than nine million copies。

The Prophet is a collection of poetic essays that are philosophical, spiritual, and, above all, inspirational。 Gibran’s musings are divided into twenty-eight chapters covering such sprawling topics as love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, housing, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death。

I should offer this disclaimer: I don't usually read poetry and often find it confusing -- However, after seeing a few Gibran quotes floating around the web and after reading the poetry-steeped book The Tale of Genji I figured why not give it a shot?Right away I realized I was reading it much too fast。 I would start to skim and lose the sense of what I was reading。 Then I would have to stop, go back, and re-read the lines again。 I eventually realized that I would have to read a bit, stop, reflec I should offer this disclaimer: I don't usually read poetry and often find it confusing -- However, after seeing a few Gibran quotes floating around the web and after reading the poetry-steeped book The Tale of Genji I figured why not give it a shot?Right away I realized I was reading it much too fast。 I would start to skim and lose the sense of what I was reading。 Then I would have to stop, go back, and re-read the lines again。 I eventually realized that I would have to read a bit, stop, reflect; or maybe even come back later to finish。It's a very slim novel。 Technically I felt like the things he wrote could have been put more simply (only so I could consume it faster), but I recognize now that the "evasiveness" and the "slowness" is part of what makes poetry different from prose。 I should have remembered from my slow-going reading of The Tale of Genji。As for the contents, there some good stuff in here。 Most seems like the usual "life coach" kind of stuff: minimalism is best, humility is best, life is pain, love makes us better, ect。 But there is some other stuff about love, sorrow, work, and all sorts of other stuff that seems new。 But that could just be the new format I'm reading it in。 Like I said, I've read it。。。 but I'm going to have to read it a few more times before I get it。 Overall, I enjoyed it。 Even if just for a new perspective on old adages。------------------------------------------ Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter's oven? And is not the lute that soothes your spirit, the very wood that was hollowed with knives? When you are joyous, look deep into your heart and you shall find it is only that which has given you sorrow that is giving you joy。When you are sorrowful look again in your heart, and you shall see that in truth you are weeping for that which has been your delight。 。。。more

One of the most beautiful and most profound pieces of literature that I have read till now, or even will ever read。 Gibran has a very humanistic, philosophical view of the different facets of being on this planet。 It's a very small collection and in my opinion everyone can and MUST read it once。 Great to be read on bad days too。However, one thing which has sort of left me disappointed/dejected is that Gibran's partner Mary Haskell, barely known to anyone, actually co-authored this piece of world One of the most beautiful and most profound pieces of literature that I have read till now, or even will ever read。 Gibran has a very humanistic, philosophical view of the different facets of being on this planet。 It's a very small collection and in my opinion everyone can and MUST read it once。 Great to be read on bad days too。However, one thing which has sort of left me disappointed/dejected is that Gibran's partner Mary Haskell, barely known to anyone, actually co-authored this piece of world-renowned writing with him but received no credit or recognition。 。。。more

Some nice moments, and much is surely very true, but other bits were gushy and derivative。 Sermon on the Mount for an attention-deficient age。

this book was ok。 i mainly had to read this for a class, but i think this book is better as a standalone lesson versus something to analyze and explore。 its advice is straightforward and doesn't need to be uncovered too deeply。 i also find it interesting how the author achieved this wisdom and portrays the prophet。 the book is very much interwoven with nature, and a lot of the depth is self-explanatory making it a bit harder to finish the book。 overall, it was fine, but i can see how one would f this book was ok。 i mainly had to read this for a class, but i think this book is better as a standalone lesson versus something to analyze and explore。 its advice is straightforward and doesn't need to be uncovered too deeply。 i also find it interesting how the author achieved this wisdom and portrays the prophet。 the book is very much interwoven with nature, and a lot of the depth is self-explanatory making it a bit harder to finish the book。 overall, it was fine, but i can see how one would find it enjoyable。 don't personally recommend if you don't like self help books。 。。。more

Beautiful Wisdom"The Prophet" offers 26 chapters of wisdom from a fictional prophet about to depart from the city of Orphalese。 The residents ask him to discuss various aspects of human life, and he answers them in prose poetry。 The book is beautifully written, and readers can take some important lessons on life from the text。 This is not a religious book, though it is influenced by the author's religion。 Rather it is a philosophical one, and quite a good one at that。 Beautiful Wisdom"The Prophet" offers 26 chapters of wisdom from a fictional prophet about to depart from the city of Orphalese。 The residents ask him to discuss various aspects of human life, and he answers them in prose poetry。 The book is beautifully written, and readers can take some important lessons on life from the text。 This is not a religious book, though it is influenced by the author's religion。 Rather it is a philosophical one, and quite a good one at that。 。。。more

interesting read! lots of really powerful writing。 "People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils her holy face。 But you are life and you are the veil。 Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in the mirror。 But you are eternity and you are the mirror。" interesting read! lots of really powerful writing。 "People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils her holy face。 But you are life and you are the veil。 Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in the mirror。 But you are eternity and you are the mirror。" 。。。more

What an exquisite book "The prophet" Is! Based on Kahlil Gibran's personal experiences as an immigrant, it is deemed to be one of the most popular spiritual fictions of 21st century。 The prophet "Almustafa" Pours his never ending wisdom onto the people of Orphalese, on several topics they keep questioning him about。 The book involves some of his paintings which are as profound as his words。 This book certainly is one of a kind that oozes a tremendous creative energy that one cannot forget。 This What an exquisite book "The prophet" Is! A little gem with wisdom and beauty in all fronts, food for thoughts and daily reflections。“Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each one of you be alone,Even as the strings of a lute are alone thought they quiver with the same music。Give your hearts, but not into each other’s keeping。For only the hand of Life can contain your hearts。And stand together yet not too near together:For the pillars of the temple stand apart,And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each other’s shadow。”

__________________________إنَّ أولادكم ليسوا أولادًا لكم。 。。。more
