Summary

A cold case heats up, revealing a deadly conspiracy in a twisty thriller by #1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Goldberg。

A catastrophic wildfire scorches the Santa Monica Mountains, exposing the charred remains of a woman who disappeared years ago。 The investigation is assigned to Eve Ronin, the youngest homicide detective in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, a position that forces her to prove herself again and again。 This time, though, she has much more to prove。

Bones don’t lie, and these have a horrific story to tell。 Eve tirelessly digs into the past, unearthing dark secrets that reveal nothing about the case is as it seems。 With almost no one she can trust, her relentless pursuit of justice for the forgotten dead could put Eve’s own life in peril。

There's a lot to like here。 This is very well written, reminiscent of Connally's Harry Bosch series。 Pretty much non-stop action involving crimes associated with skeletal bones that are found。 Very nice interplay between the main character, Eve Ronin, and her retiring partner, Duncan。 Lots of political intrigue involving the higher ups。 There is a twist at the end, that I didn't think worked especially well; but, nevertheless, a very good book。 There's a lot to like here。 This is very well written, reminiscent of Connally's Harry Bosch series。 Pretty much non-stop action involving crimes associated with skeletal bones that are found。 Very nice interplay between the main character, Eve Ronin, and her retiring partner, Duncan。 Lots of political intrigue involving the higher ups。 There is a twist at the end, that I didn't think worked especially well; but, nevertheless, a very good book。 。。。more

Great followup to first Eve Ronin mystery。 Living in the west Valley it’s nice to have a story NOT set in Hollywood or downtown。 Much of the action outside of Calabasas/Malibu is in Woodland Hills/Canoga Park。 She rents a car from the Enterprise at my corner! And gets pizza from Barone’s, which is next door to my Pilates studio。 All that with an exciting narrative of corrupt police。

This is the second book in the Eve Ronin series, and I read book one as well。 This plot carried a bit more depth than the first in the series, in my opinion。 The killer was a bit of a surprise, but the clues and pursuit of answers were well documented and logical。 The author builds out Eve's character more in this book, and the conflict between her pursuit of justice and the protection of the good old boys police club becomes a central theme。 Also, the undercurrent of living and working near Hol This is the second book in the Eve Ronin series, and I read book one as well。 This plot carried a bit more depth than the first in the series, in my opinion。 The killer was a bit of a surprise, but the clues and pursuit of answers were well documented and logical。 The author builds out Eve's character more in this book, and the conflict between her pursuit of justice and the protection of the good old boys police club becomes a central theme。 Also, the undercurrent of living and working near Hollywood and the lure of fortune and fame also are elevated in importance。 I look forward to book three and Eve's development as a respected crime fighter。 。。。more

A fun read。 Eve Ronin is a woman who knows who she is … sort of。 She knows what she wants。 Sometimes that can be too much of a good thing。 There is a lot of willing suspension of disbelief here。 Eve is too gifted for somebody so inexperienced in the Homicide department。 But she is able to change and … her most likable quality is her determination to do justice for the victims of the crimes she investigates。 I like that we have a potential way for Donuts to keep in Eve’s life, even though it’s fa A fun read。 Eve Ronin is a woman who knows who she is … sort of。 She knows what she wants。 Sometimes that can be too much of a good thing。 There is a lot of willing suspension of disbelief here。 Eve is too gifted for somebody so inexperienced in the Homicide department。 But she is able to change and … her most likable quality is her determination to do justice for the victims of the crimes she investigates。 I like that we have a potential way for Donuts to keep in Eve’s life, even though it’s far from clear that he’ll choose that for his life after the Sheriff’s Department。 But does feel like an acknowledgement to the reader that he is an important part of Eve’s life and these books。 Looking forward to book 3, expected in the fall。 。。。more

Well written novel, with a surprise at the end。 The characters were interesting and well developed。 The heroine is likable for her drive and honesty, but suffers from a lack of experience。 I will definitely read the next book in the series。

Thoroughly enjoyed this book。 Second in the Eve Ronin series。 Great characters- realistic and complex。 The legal/ police scenarios are fast- paced。 And the humor evident throughout makes this quite easy to read。 Recommend it。

Captivating story! It's a murder mystery, but at the same time, it's more than that: it's a story about a young female cop struggling against tidal waves of sexism, Hollywood insanity, and police corruption to do her job。 Eve Ronin really gets put through the wringer, which。。。 to be honest, is exactly what I like to see from mysteries and action stories。 It's when the protagonist is at their low point that you really get to know them。One thing that I have to say I really love about the Eve Ronin Captivating story! This was an excellent novel from beginning to end。 The plot kept the readers interest and was unpredictable。 I highly recommend this author。

Lee Goldberg wrote for TV。 And I watch TV so his books really appeal to me。 Even Ronin is a sheriff in LA who rose to detective level because of a viral video of her taking down a man who was abusing a woman。 That man was a famous actor who played an action hero so her nickname is "Deathfist" She is resented by most of her colleagues for skipping ahead in promotions, her boss thinks she is a publicity hound and she's a woman in a male dominated job。 Her second case turns out to be much more than Lee Goldberg wrote for TV。 And I watch TV so his books really appeal to me。 Even Ronin is a sheriff in LA who rose to detective level because of a viral video of her taking down a man who was abusing a woman。 That man was a famous actor who played an action hero so her nickname is "Deathfist" She is resented by most of her colleagues for skipping ahead in promotions, her boss thinks she is a publicity hound and she's a woman in a male dominated job。 Her second case turns out to be much more than it first appears, what starts as a simple remains recovery opens a can of worms that leads to interdepartmental corruption。 Joined by her 117 days until retirement partner and hounded by Hollywood agents and writers who want to buy her story she has to keep digging despite harassment by other officers and eventually violent attacks。 Add to this her dysfunctional family and you are in for a roller coaster ride。 。。。more

This short (265 pages) enjoyable book by Lee Goldberg is the second in his Eve Ronin series。 I liked the protagonist, a rookie detective, as well as her soon-to-be retired partner, “Donuts” Pavone。 Eve is a bit over the top and appears to work twice as hard to be thought of as half as good。 Story moves quickly。

This is the best Goldberg I've read and I've read plenty。 Eve Ronin is a fantastic lead character。 Obsessed, flawed and heroic all at the same time。 Do not miss this one, but start with #1 in the series, also very very good。 I've already preordered the next Eve Ronin。 This is the best Goldberg I've read and I've read plenty。 Eve Ronin is a fantastic lead character。 Obsessed, flawed and heroic all at the same time。 Do not miss this one, but start with #1 in the series, also very very good。 I've already preordered the next Eve Ronin。 。。。more
